Fox Searchlight Will Release BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD!

Published at:  Jan 24, 2012 7:04:33 PM CST

Nordling here.

So far from Sundance the one film I'm hearing the most positive buzz about is BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD.  (Well, that and THE RAID, but THE RAID's been around since Toronto last year.)  A lot of critics flipped for the movie, as did the audience, and I hope that it makes its way down to South By Southwest in March, but if it doesn't, it's in good hands as far as releases go.

Fox Searchlight has won this year's first Sundance bidding war for BEAsTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, according to Variety.  The film is Benh Zeitlin's feature-length debut at Sundance, and he wrote the script with Lucy Alibar.  For those curious as to what it's about, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is a sort-of-fantasy that takes place in southern Louisiana.  It centers on Hushpuppy, a little girl who may or may not be witnessing the end of the world, or at least, the end of her world, the Bathrub,  which is in danger of flooding.  If the Bathrub goes, everything Hushpuppy ever knew will be gone.  Reports from Sundance have been very positive and I can't wait to see it myself.

Fox Searchlight has always done good by Sundance movies - last year's MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE was a terrific movie and Searchlight got a lot of awareness for it (even if Elizabeth Olsen got snubbed at the Oscars for her amazing performance this year).  Good for them on this buy and hopefully we'll all experience this movie very soon.

Nordling, out.  Follow me on Twitter!

I hope this isn't insulting to the folks of Louisiana

Having lived most of my life there, most films that take place in Louisiana are not very accurate. A couple, but not most.

Bathrub sounds like something you pay a masseuse extra for

I want Bridesmaids Criterion Edition with commentary from the people who made it with an in depth analysis of their decisions when crafting that Oscar worthy script.

I hope that's a nickname rather than a name given to her by her parents. You never know these days.

I saw it and it's spectacular. Production value and acting way beyond what you expect from an indie, and a totally unusual and moving story that would never be touched by a big studio.

Nordling, it's the Bath TUB not RUB. Makes a bit more sense.

maxjohnson1971, it's based on a play written by a local who helped the director adapt it, directed by a New Yorker who visited 6 years ago, fell in love with the place and stayed, and the cast was al local non-actors with the exception of one who'd acted just a little bit before. They did an incredible job. A few Louisiana natives in the audience were weeping afterwards.

Seriously, I don't rave about films often (especially not narratives I've seen at Sundance!) but this was just plain great.
