Herc’s Sunday TV Talkback!! Discuss Here Maybe The Last PAN AM And PRIME SUSPECT Ever!! Plus DOWNTON, IDOL, ONCE, CAJUN, KOURTNEY, 60, BOSS & WIFE!!

Published at: Jan. 22, 2012, 1:22 a.m. CST by hercules

I’m not certain, but I suspect tonight could bring the series finales for both NBC’s “Prime Suspect” (now replaced by “The Firm”) and ABC’s “Pan Am.” (I note that both of this season’s 1963-set shows – “Pan Am” and “The Playboy Club” – will likely have vanished during “Mad Men’s” hiatus.)

Sad news about Prime Suspect. Maria Bello is a decent actress.

    by I_Love_LanaLang

She needs to be on a show with better writing. Prime Suspect was a too "by the numbers" investigative cop show. Nothing about the show made it stand out from the clutter of similar cop shows. Bello is an attractive older woman, but she looked ridiculous wearing a fedora on the show. I wonder who greenlighted that idea? Any idea when The Walking Dead returns?

  • 60 Minutes has become minor league journalism with minor league stories. The Simpsons, well, we all understand that it's been coasting for years. Family Guy? Not interested. Can anyone recommend a show on Sunday that's truly worth watching?

    PBS on Sunday Bitches

    by Crow3711

Downton Abbey is the shit. Plus NOVA. Until Mad Men and game of thrones comes back to own Sundays, PBS is dominating in my opinion. Herc, I really don't understand why you're not even mentioning Downton in the headlines. Do you not like it? What's the deal?

  • Jan. 22, 2012, 1:54 a.m. CST

crow3711, I agree about PBS and Nova.

    by I_Love_LanaLang

Nova is a terrific show. Frontline can also deliver some fantastic investigative journalism.

    by Xiphos_2

are truly awful good job monkeys*! here's thought have you numb nuts considered airing you know good shows? What I can't figure out is why the USA Network has mostly decent entertaining shows but the flagship network NBC can't get out of its own way? Maybe its time to take a look at moving the USA Network people over NBC way. *with apologies to monkeys they would probably do a better job then the NBC asstards are doing.

A real treat for silent film fans midnight on TCM

    by Michael Lunney

There is always something good to watch on TV, every day, as long as you look hard enough. Anyone who calls himself a horror film fan, this is a must see: HAXAN: Witchcraft Through the Ages , 1922, from Denmark. It is unforgettable. Saw it several years ago when it ran as a Halloween treat on IFC. There are so many silent films that are better than today's corporate dreck. THis film is innovative and audacious. It was heavily censored and banned, which should make contemporary viewers swoon with it's very adult, powerful imagery If you are not a silent film fan, or think you might just be bored, this film may change your outlook. There are some scenes which make you wince once in a while (like the slaughter of the child with blood pouring down its legs into a chalice beneath it), but there is enough going on visually to take your mind off its undercurrent of gore and depravity. The movie is structured in seven chapters, the first giving a historical account of witchcraft's origins in literature and illustrations. We then are presented with drama plays, having to do with the practice of witches, and the persecution, trying, and torturing of said witches. We are also presented with several instances of the devil manifesting and making demands on his minions. In the end, Christensen attempts to make a correlation between the acts, mannerisms, and various disfigurements anciently attributed to witches and their craft, and the modern effects of hysteria. Sex goes hand-in-hand with Satan, and Christensen's flamboyant portrayal of the aforementioned character, complete with flicking, wanton tongue, drives home the point (well, that and a peppering of nudity). Unique to say the least, ‘Haxan' is a rather weird curio of a film with some incredibly atmospheric, somewhat graphic images, esp. for that era. Director Benjamin Christensen appears as a leering, tongue-wagging Satan, with very realistic makeup. The witches are shown with the Devil and his minions performing various acts of sacrilege and perversion that must have been extremely shocking at the time the movie originally appeared, and would be offensive to many people still. The film was banned for many years because of the depiction of these acts (not to mention the occasional nudity), as well as sacrileges performed by nuns and monks. There are some stop-motion animation sequences that are very excellent. This is a difficult movie to describe. It really is something that you'd have to see for yourself. Imagine Tod Browning and Jean Cocteau making a film together and you might begin to get an idea of what you'll see in this film. It's rather disjointed in its storytelling but who cares? Where else can you see witches kissing the ass of Satan, boiling non-baptized babies, and giving birth to demons? Not to mention getting a full tour of the state-of-the-art in medieval torture devices!

Try EuroTrip ... It's right up yours (and hers) 'back' alley. *Scotty Doesn't Know*

  • Well, that's what happens when a show is off the air for one and a half years - a lot of other shows, including those that are set in the same era, come and go during those many months.

  • only because I don't think NBC has anything else to fill its slot. Sure, I'd be nice if they moved Up All Night to 8:00, followed by Parks, followed by The Office, then new Community at 9:30, with 30 Rock at 10:00 and Community repeats at 10:30. But 10:00 Thursday is historically their quality drama slot so that's what they want to air then, and pretty much all they have is The Firm.

  • At 8 and Midnight EST. 4 hour time slot. I've only seen the original version, liked it, but with 45 minutes of additional footage, this is by all accounts a superior version. Hopefully it really is the full 190 minute version without trims for commercials.

Downton, The Fades and Black Mirror

    by Extr3m1st

Can someone who is feeling bored give me a quick synopsis on these 3 shows. Downton sounds boring to me but people seem to rave about it. BM is an anthology show much like The Twilight Zone and I don't even know how to describe The Fades. Are these shows entertaining and why?

    rinse re:Downton S2

    by Crow3711

Tonight they are the "third" episode of season 2 I think, so its halfway, unless the "2 hour season premiere" counted as two episodes and not one. But, as far as "over the top", I definitely felt like the two hour premiere was over the top and rushed, still enjoyable, but not the same sharpness of storyline as the first. But I felt like last week was more back to the norm. As a whole I'm enjoying the grander scope I suppose, but I do hope they don't go overboard with it.

    by Crow3711

I don't know anything about the other two, but Downton is just about the lives and hardships of the aristocrats and servants who work and live in a noble British house around WW1. I always compare it to Mad Men in terms of why its good. Just like Mad Men, on paper it doesn't sound very interesting and basically amounts to a soap opera. But if you like deep characters, sharp scripts, terrific production values, and don't have the disposition of believing "soap opera" automatically means bad, then you'll love it. If you think mad Men is boring, you'll think Downton is boring. It's just purely character driven intrigue. There's nothing exciting going on whatsoever. I find it fascinating because I love the characters, and get wrapped up in the story through them, same as Mad Men. It's also cool because I don't know much of anything about English nobility and how things worked, etc. I just find the whole show refreshing. It's just very happy to be doing its own thing.

    Shameless and House Of Lies

    by arzbest

I started watching "Shameless" as a way to kill time before "House Of Lies", but was pleasantly surprised. "Shameless" is involving in a kind of anti-Waltons way, while "House of Lies" is surprisingly bleh, even with the talents of Veronica Mars and Jean-Ralphio. The acting is there, but the writing needs to improve dramatically.

    The Fades?

    by Gislef_crow

Basically a British version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a male "Chosen One." Paul = Buffy, Mac = Xander, Anna = Cordelia, Neil = Giles. Jay = kinda Willow in S1 Buffy. If Buffy had a Big Bad that could bring ghosts to life, you'd have The Fades. That said, it's a bit more explicit, and they spend a bit more time on the teenage angst angle.

I watched most of tonight's show. The premise is intersting, but it didn't quite grab me and make me want to watch further episodes.
