So, have you heard about KON-TIKI? This is something I'm dying to see!

Hey folks, Harry here...   Checking out the trailer to KON-TIKI was something of a discovery for me.  It's this UK/Norway/Denmark production about Thor Heyerdahl, the crazy as hell explorer that believed there were currents in the ocean that would guide his BALSA WOOD RAFT 5000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.   He was considered insane, for obvious reasons.   I mean.  In 1947 when he did this - we had modes of sea-faring transportation that was notably safer than BALSA WOOD.   But he wanted to prove his theory.   This film is about that story - and to play Thor Heyerdahl, they've cast one of the actors from MAX MANUS: MAN OF WAR, Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen.   This is one of the films I'm most hopeful for seeing this year, because it truly does look extraordinary here, don't you think?

Let me guess? He drowns? Eaten by Sharks?

    by phantomcreeps

Just kidding, Looks pretty damn good, actually. But, I swear some of us humans, are crazy fucks, that won't take no for an answer. Seems, like some of the characters are thinking, Yes There is Water, Yes it might be possible. What is wrong with you, bro?

Looks like something Werner Herzog would've directed...

...with Klaus Kinski in the late 70's or early 80's. Its same type of insane man on a mission story as Fitzcaraldo, Aguire: The Wrath of God, or Cobra Verde.

    Excellent book

    by Clio

I read Kon-Tiki many years ago--great adventure story. But I enjoyed just as much his book on the Ra Expeditions, from Morocco to the Americas. It was written around 1970. Good stuff....but depend upon a movie to screw it up....I would rather see a documentary.

  • from the book...and the glowing phosphorescence on the waves at night...

If they remake this one, I'll be first in line. Fond memories of the Blob like monster, although rumor was they used a carpet as a stand in

    I owned the book...

    by DrMeyer

and dug into the story when I was a kid. (I'm a lot older than most of y'all.) I had a copy of the kid's picture book version, and the adult version. There's a Wiki page, fairly accurate. Until the space raace, the Kon-Tiki expedition was the great adventure of the postwar years. And yeah, Heyerdahl was considered crazy. Who else would build a balsa-log raft using ancient methods, get a crew of fellow Viking warriors, and sail it to Tahiti? For me, it was the coolest thing I ever read.

Hollywood will remake this with Ryan Gosling.

    by AnnoyYou

Hey, they're taking a bunch of other Scandinavian products and turning them into total shite - why not this?

Looks promising - will be remade

    by moviemaniac-7

If the int'l number are good, this will be remade with Brad Pitt or Ryan Gosling in the lead. Mark my words.

This is the Norwegian trailer, but..

    by Nils Thomas Nokleholm

I read somewhere that they are shooting it in both Norwegian and English, so there will be an international release. (Can't find source right now) Heyerdahl was (in Norway at least) known for his bad english accent, and this actor gets it spot on.

  • Jan. 22, 2012, 3 a.m. CST

Wow I will admit this trailer is great

    by CT1

Never have I seen such a serious, epic trailer to a movie that's based on the real story of what could possibly be labeled the Most Boring Thing That's Ever Taken Place On This Planet. I mean that was like something Christopher Nolan would make.

    Shot in Malta

    by Shady Drifter

I've been hearing a lot about this production since they filmed the scenes of the sea journey in the huge wate tank in Malta... which was used in other productions in the past such as U-571 and Ridley Scott's White Squall. Having a tank like that means that they can do some daring water shots in a controlled environment. This trailer really makes me want to watch the film... has the same kind of vibes of Peter Weir's The Way Back which was one of my favourite movies in the past couple of years.

    About the inevitable remake

    by Jeespox

Not only will it be remade, it will be remade approximately two-three years from now! Rejoice, it's time for Hollywood to show the world again that they alone can do it.

  • Jan. 22, 2012, 10:28 a.m. CST

I read the book years ago.

    by Rob Jenson

The movie looks like it goes well beyond the scope of the book, but the story of the voyage itself could make an incredible film. Can't wait to see Thor stare into the eye of the great squid as it stares up at him from the inky darkness of the sea.

Harry, it's directed by the directors of Max Manus as well

    by Colonel_Blimp

(Who also made the awful Bandidas with Penelope and Salma.) And it's true, they've shot two versions of the film, one in Norwegian and one in English.
