From its inception in 1980 through the election of 2008, the winner of the South Carolina Republican presidential primary has gone on to win the nomination. Tonight brings the 2012 edition. The latest NBC News/Marist poll puts Mitt Romney ahead in South Carolina. Other polls say Newt Gingrich, who apparently recently gained the endorsement of Sarah Palin (she was nearly president!), will prevail.
