This Crowd Sourced STAR WARS EPISODE IV Is Mind-boggling...

Published at:  Jan 20, 2012 5:20:05 PM CST

Merrick here...

This via Lee Unkrich's Twitter stream.   Info from the project's YouTube page indicates...

In 2009, thousands of Internet users were asked to remake "Star Wars: A New Hope" into a fan film, 15 seconds at a time. Contributors were allowed to recreate scenes from Star Wars however they wanted. Within just a few months SWU grew into a wild success. The creativity that poured into the project was unimaginable.

[EDIT]

Finally, the crowd-sourced project has been stitched together and put online for your streaming pleasure. The "Director's Cut" is a feature-length film that contains hand-picked scenes from the entire StarWarsUncut.com collection.

So here it is, rather amazing and hugely enjoyable.  Behold...

Don't forget - XBOX Live now has a very nice YouTube app. This looks great on it...

    by sk229

I guess I'd just like to see this many people thinking really hard and doing something semi-original. I bet asking that many people to do that and make a 1 minute movie would mean you'd get something genuinely good somewhere in there. So much creativity has been wasted over the last 15 years on Star Wars parody. Imagine if nearly everyone who wanted to learn an instrument did nothing but riff on and dress like The Beatles. I still love the movies and I guess it's a testament to just how much Lucas not only distilled the most basic elements of storytelling, but also the varied and rich characters/locations... their look, their names, their personalities... it's pretty amazing and I guess the reason we're stuck with it is it probably won't happen again within our lifetimes. Definitely not in such a 'poppy' way.

which was longer than I thought I was going to last. This has that "arts and crafts" appeal of film making one might do with their friends over a weekend. However, that novelty cannot sustain two hours.

I found this to be strongest when the footage was synched up with the sound and dialogue of the actual Episode IV. Other than that, I commend the fans for their creativity in presenting tried and true scenes all fans know by heart. Nevertheless, I couldn't stick with it.

What boggles my mind is the genius of Lucas and...

    by drstrangerlove

.....How he continues to squeeze every atom of Star Wars nostalga from fans. The shit prequels were glossed over by the love of the original trilogy - which i love too btw - George Lucas has directed two good movies in 40 years; American Graffitti and Star Wars, not the best track record. But his genius is how he has built from that one movie - which had a superior sequel and a mixed finale; luke v Vader yes, cuddley teddy bears...no - and he has made an empire all of his own. With more money than most contries he can indulge himself knowing that he has Star Wars to mine any time he feels the need for praise.

Red Tails is shit, ahh but look at the cute fan boys & girls here, forget about Red Tails have more Star Wars funnies.....

the phantom menace was a boring, movie with wooden actors...

that I agree. but it was also a movie that had no practical effects and was shot using green screen and using cgi.

lucas always knew that practical effects couldnt cut it in an era computerised modern effects. hence his need to constantly re edit the film.

practical effects took too long. sets had to be built by the studio in the old days. lucas turned up on the gangs of new york set and told Marty that the days of the studio lot were over. Gangs of new york really was the last time a film was made on set built by the studio.

studios hate actors as in the past they were a demanding pain in the ass.

lucas hated working with actors and his dialog verged on mumbo jumbo.

Star wars movies look great and sound great. star wars always a cinematic experiment. hence lucas stopped making films normal films a long time. he needs to go back make more films like american graffiti. the venomous haters who hate and detest his existent, for some reason. would doesnt he just feck off and die.

    Starwars bitch.

    by ultratron

The Starwars universe is simply too big to let go to waste. A new stand alone movie as good as avatar is needed. A new time, planet, heroes- everything! A new generation discovering an all new Starwars with new rules. A fresh start with fresh heroic archetypes that are indelibly burned into our retinas upon first seeing them. Starwars needs new blood to enact this thing that should happen. The Starwars Galaxy Themepark should be built along with it. Starwars needs to be just Starwars again. NO EPISODE. Just Starwars bitch.

Just finished watching the whole thing.

    by juggernaut125

    A couple of thoughts.

    1. I have too much time on my hands.

    2. A lot of the animation used in this was seriously impressive for a fan submission.

    3. The scene in the cantina where Ben cuts off the arm was great.

    4. The brief scene on the Death Star where the girl in the background makes the funny face caught me completely off guard. LOVED it.

    5. For those who don't 'get it'. And only have negative things to say about this, I will explain. For some, Star Wars was a major influence on their lives growing up. The first film astonished and amazed audiences around the world and for them, that magic has never faded, despite what may have followed. This project would be a chance for them to participate in an homage to a (usually) beloved film in some small way. The entire project is a patchwork poem of thanks to the movie that started itall.
These people don't give a rat's ass if you don't 'get it'. Or if you think it's stupid. A lot of them put in some very hard work. (Not all of them, but a lot.) And the finished result speaks volumes as a labor of love. And if you can't see that. If you would rather disparage their contributions than see them as fun, impressive, silly or inciteful, well that speaks more towards your character than it does to theirs.
I'm not much of a fan of Lucas anymore, but I did enjoy this for what it was. A love letter to his biggest film.

  • ...was I dreaming, or did Anakin and Obi Wan "glide in" their spacecraft after it lost power in the early part of ROTS?

This makes my head hurt on so many levels...I realize this isn't the appropriate talk-back to bring this up, but I was thinking about it earlier today and getting really mad.

Seems like people don't bring this up too often. Am I crazy, or does this not set the record for stupidity?

  • You know what? STOP WORSHIPPING AT THIS ALTAR. THIS ALTAR IS CLOSED. I grew up with Star Wars. Saw the original run of the original film, in a BIG ASS THEATRE, when I was 5 years old and it completely and totally blew my mind. Then, 2 years later, Empire Strikes Back came along and BLEW MY MIND 10 MILLION TIMES MORE! Then, Return of the Jedi came and it didn't blow my mind, but it wrapped up the story nicely and made me get a little weepy eyed.

    FLASH FORWARD TO 1999..

    Um... what?

FLASH FORWARD TO 2002 (Or thereabouts)

Oh, you know what, fuck you.

FLASH FORWARD TO 2005 (Or thereabouts)

Alright, this one worked as much as it could considering how bad the first two sucked bantha ass.

    FLASH FORWARD TO THE BLU-RAYS

FUCK YOU! I'm done. DONE! FUCK YOU!

And that about sums it up. Stop worshipping at this asshats altar. His success is a fluke built on the hard work of the betters he hastily fired as soon as he could.

    Star Wars is dead.

    D E A D.

Let's all admit it now. The best thing to come outta Star Wars since 1983 has been Plinkett's reviews of the prequels.

  • 1) The scene where the guy is singing about making the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. Very strange but hilarious.

    2) After Luke comes in to rescue the princess, the kid who says "I've got your R2 Unit and I'm here with Ben Kenobi!". The way he delivered that line was really funny, like he's a rapper or something.

Creativity inspires creativity. Magic inspires more magic. I love fandom, I love fans, and I love expressions of passion about what inspires said passions. Makes me proud to be one.

I watched this back to back and this is a reminder of all of the above.

Some genuine laughs, some genuine inspiration and talent. And ALL love.

How can you hate on that? Not your thing, fine, but some of the more negative stuff, I don't get you and would not want to live in your world.

Yes, the PT does not live up to the OT in terms of phenomenae vs mere films. The OT are classics while the PT are merely competent/good films, but just films, in my view. The elements Lucas had to tell truly inspirational stories is not there and the main strengths the PT have are undeniably phenomenal technology and a fictional universe that has real strength to it.

I haven't tried the Clone Wars yet, but will, as I've heard good things. I'm excited about SW: Underworld, but hope Lucas isn't the primary storytelling decision maker on it.

And since the Blu Rays didn't have the original edits on them, I didn't bother with them.

But this? I had two hours for this. Good on you all.

When Star Wars Is Ashes... The He Has My Permission To Die

    by ass clown

How many re-releases have there been for these movies. I can think of three different VHS releases, at least two DVD ones, a BluRay one, and the coming 3D BluRay one. Let's not forget that the movies have already been re-released once and will begin a second re-release shortly. George Lucas is a greedy, money hungry scum bag. He lost his connection with the Star Wars universe long ago, but somehow retained the rights. He will make money until his death and then hopefully someone competent will secure these rights and continue the franchise.
