Watch out, we've got a new RIDDICK set pic here
Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with a set pic from the troubled production of Vin Diesel's space Rambo, otherwise known as Riddick. Diesel's been hit or miss for me personally, but he's done some solid work and has been breaking his balls to get us more of Riddick, so I'm curiously hopeful he'll deliver. I actually really liked THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and think PITCH BLACK was damn fun. Sure CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is no BLADE RUNNER, but it's fun as hell and I can't wait to see where the character goes in the next film/films. The pic below came straight from Diesel's Facebook fanpage.

The David Twohy (THE FUGITIVE) directed film stars Vin Diesel (XXX), Karl Urban (STAR TREK), Katee Sackhoff (BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA), and Jordi Molla (BLOW). The supposedly film picks up with Riddick being left for dead by his people on a bizarre planet where he must fight crazy alien beasts and fend off bounty hunters in hopes of returning to his home planet.

The last movie ended with Riddick being emperor of the universe. Or was that a dream?
-
He's a true geek- plays D&D and all that shit.
-
Pitch Black had more of an Alien sort of look. I don't know who came up with stupid idea with the gods and armor and all that crap. I want to see blasters and ships, not some crappy mystical Riddick movie. Have him fighting monsters!
-
Riddick.....ahaaa....he'll save everyone of us..
-
Hell, I wouldn't have even bothered with seeing Pitch Black had it not been for the sequel. I will totally support this film.
-
like cobb05 said- go back to the pitch black look. like a space western, not a space caesar.... and seriously, those are the only goggles in the universe?
-
Will he be on a float at the next mardi gras?

I like Vin Diesel. He's always passionate about his projects. And is a true nerd at heart.
by Dharma4
Beside, his fight with the Rock was brilliant in Fast Five. -Namaste-
-
I'm right there with you. On the outermost surface it's easy to write him as a muscled up action star, but then you watch STRAYS and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Though to be fair, THE PACIFIER didn't really do much for me... Fingers crossed for RIDDICK.
-
Oh God. I'm there. -Namaste-

I guess the Necromongers didn't like him as their King, huh?
by D.Vader
So they just exile him?

Looks like a bald He-Man.

It makes your ASS a dragon. ASS DRAGON!
-
I love movies and I care about the site.
-
...tend to be kinda, let's see, what's the word... Stupid.
-
God, these movies are stupid. WHO is asking for more of them?!
-
...I loved the second flick and was truly hoping that we'd get a direct sequel following the ending of Riddick reluctantly taking the throne. Hopefully there'll be some backstory of how he gets to the place he'll be in, in this film. I also wouldn't be against seeing Alexa Davalos again, or a trip to the Underworld.
-
sounds like they just mixed together the first two movies. I kind of like the end of the second one when he was made Emperor of the Universe or something like that.
-
I pulled a D.Vader once again.
-
Riddick should go the way of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Give Vinny some sugar baby!

What the fuck. Pitch Black was a decent R-rated flick, Riddick SUCKED. What's the use of making another one? In this day of age, audiences don't care about this franchise, they crave more Fast and Furious movies (totally overrated franchise).

Twohy has done some pretty good Genre flicks - & 2nd Riddick extended far better than first.
by even9
'The Arrival' was good film, first Riddick decent and second extended even funner pulpy sci-fi epic. Is this a conclusion? A good extended cut for home viewing could make it all worthwhile trilogy.
-
Considering I picked it up on DVD at the local Strawberries without ever hearing about it beforehand. One of the last great blind-buys I've ever head. Chronicles was sorta boring and 'popcorn' if I remember correctly. I only watched it once when I rented it way back when it was released on video. I hope they go back to the PB vibe... fingers crossed.
-
Damn auto-correct, damn AICN for no edit feature.
-
Its about time you got back here then. Where've you been this whole time?! The site needs more people like you.
-
I think is his best action performance, and he did a damn good job at portraying a guy who would really, REALLY like to be a sociopath, but still has a little empathy left over. Hopefully he can channel the Riddick from that instead of the sequel, which was pretty much retarded all around.
-
That was one of the biggest disappointments in recent film history. Even worse than the Star Wars prequels in my opinion. Riddick is a great character though. This pic doesnt get me too excited. Looks more like Chronicles than Pitch Black.
-
Made the great Below, and for that I will always pay the euros to see his films. Escape from Butcher Bay on the Xbox, 360 and PS3 was a pretty good addition to the Riddick series as well, and Vin was good in it too!
-
One of the best things about it? Sets! Strangely, during the whole movie I kept thinking that Twohy should direct an Elric movie. I mean, if not Guillermo Del Toro, Twohy should. Looking forward to this one.
-
Pitch Black is a classic, and Chronicles was also very good. I have much respect for Vin Diesel as an actor and a fellow geek. If you don't like it, don't watch it. My wife and I will be there on opening day, like we were for the last film.
-
Please re-read your synopsis under the picture and then re-write it so that it makes sense. Twohy "directed"(are you talking about his previous Riddick film or does he direct his current film?)... "the supposedly film"...(the film does not exist or is the production a wish?)thanks.
-
Pitch Black was 'ALIEN' as 'ALIEN RESURRECTION' was Chronicles of Riddick. It's so fucking Space Opera-wannabe, with all this over-the-top shit going on while trying to create this massive cheeseball universe, instead of a small, completely fucking interesting and mysterious sci-fi film with awesome characters and action. Enough with these gay-ass Necromonger things. and universe-eating floaty ghost people or whatever the fuck was going on. It's RIDDICKulous.
-
You can tell he's genuinely passionate about the Riddick series, which is rare. I harbour no ill will towards him. Chronicles was only decent in my opinion, but it had a ballsy-as-fuck ending that really made the movie. The universe is itself is unique, and it could be done well under the right talent and vision. And of course Pitch Black was one of those surprisingly good sci-fi's that crop up every few years.
-
...Chronicles was ass, this armor design should never have been signed off on, and chimp-smile Katie Sackoff was the worst choice from among Battlestar Galactaca chicks. Was the asian one not available?
-
Jan. 20, 2012, 11:27 a.m. CST
Let's hope it will be as good as the original and not like the mediocre Chronicles
by KilliK
from the plot summary i suppose they did the wise thing and completely ignored the last movie.good.
-
but it was a new sci-fi universe. It wasn't a re-imagining of another sci-fi universe (you know who you are) and it wasn't a Goddamned comic book movie. It was, in comparison to most of the other shit that's churned out nowadays, original. And it flopped. And they're making another one anyway. For that alone, they have my nine bucks.
-
I almost read the article and looked at the picture.
-
This looks really great. Not gay at all. It looks like maybe ol' Vin there lost the bloat and hopped on the Thor homoerotica bandwagon, that's a pretty cool step for the "franchise".
-

I liked Chronicles of Narn...er, Riddick more than Pitch Black
by Tikidonkeypunch
While this is no Science Fiction epic like Star Wars nor is it an awesome fantasy story like LOTR, it is still fun to watch. But I understand, fanboys will hate on everything.
-
I think the best thing about Twohy is he seems to always get great performances out of his actors. Maybe better than he deserves. A Perfect Getaway, Pitch Black, Below... all were fairly self contained movies powered by a small group of characters. But in Chronicles, there were too many characters and maybe he was spending to much time wrangling problems with the larger scope of the project rather than working closely with the actors. So you get a case of it's Riddick and a bunch of people I don't give a rat's ass about dealing with space ghosts and magic vs. a bunch of interesting characters the audience has grown invested in potentially getting knocked off one by one. Either that or it was just a big stupid movie trying to be more than it should.
-
Chronicles of Riddick wasn't a masterpiece but the story and universe it created were engrossing enough to make it worth a theater visit. There really isn't any sci fi like that anymore.
-

Vin Diesel may be sweet guy, and a geek at heart (I like his involvement in the videogames),
by openthepodbaydoorshal
but didn't he suggest/campaign for Oscar consideration for his role in Fast Five? That's the sign of someone who's been dropped on their head at birth.
-
I absolutely and shamelessly love both of the Riddick movies. Love the video game too.
-
Vin Diesel takes a lot of shit from the internet community, but I don't think anyone can deny that the guy is A) Hungry for franchises and B) Passionate about the ones he has The one thing I've enjoyed about this new chapter in the Riddick series is that Diesel and Twohy (sp?) have been actively involved in trying to keep fans' interests peeked, even if it was just through a lot of concept art. I think both know what worked and what didn't work in Chronicles, and hopefully can address it. Worse thing they did was giving Riddick a storyline that echoed Conan The Barbarian. Keeping it simple, dark, and Riddick centered is what people want to see.
-
Pitch black was cheaper and smaller in scale than the chronicles of riddick, but it was the superior movie out of the two. All of the space politics riddick got himself into in the chronicles of riddick was no way as exciting as the stuff he got up to in pitch black. Personally i think that if this franchise is to continue , all of the big scale space opera stuff should be ditched and the small scale, small number of characters and alien monsters need to come back!
-
Thanks for keeping things moving around here. Good stuff.
-
And they left him for dead on a planet if so cool but it be cool if we got a 15 minute montogue of how RIDDICK got ther4e..

I'd rather see a new Riddick movie than a new Transformers movie. I don't think I can take anymore of "W..W..W..W..WAIT!!! D..D..D..D..DON'T!!! N..N..N..N..NOOOO!!!", and we can't forget this memorable line: "OPTIMUS!!!".

...I'll be there.
-
I enjoyed both movies, and the ending to Chronicles was a good one. I did feel a disconnect between the two however - mainly I think 'cos there was just no hint given that there was this crazily rich, populated universe with all these different types/species of people on different planets that were so prominent in the second outing. The Western/backwoods feel of the first just didn't feel like the same 'reality' as the second. Regardless, the wife and I will be buying tickets for this. I wonder if they're thinking that if they have a successful lower-budget movie with this, they'll then try to get financing for a bigger-budget fourth outing to properly wrap up the story that started in Chronicles (the underworld stuff or whatever it was).
-
Without having seen it I thought COR would be shit... then on a movie night a friend insisted on watching it and I reluctantly agreed... anyway i thoroughly enjoyed it and consider it to be a sci fi gem

Having fatty Vin beat The Rock in that FF movie was more ridonkulos than two racing cars speeding along dragging a 50 ton safe!!!!!
by cameron
The Rock would have battered Vin Doughbody without breaking a sweat! The Rock needs a Terminator style movie!!
-
More Indy and less Star Wars. Twohy's mistake with Chronicles was trying to turn the series into a massive space opera. That's kind've hard to do when you really only have one character and he's little more than an archetype. It was just too big a leap. If the film had simply focused on the middle act of Riddick in prison, we'd probably be talking about Riddick 4 or 5 by now. Hopefully we'll get a new Riddick game out of this, since Escape From Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena were both a lot of fun. They also understood the episodic nature of the character a lot better than Chronicles.
-
I think we need a movie where Vin Diesel reprises all the roles he ever played in one single movie. The issue with that is you will not be able to tell them apart, except for Riddick will have sunglasses on.
-
... but I've never seen more than a few minutes of The Chronicles of Riddick. I think the completely different tone of the second film just threw me out of it. If this one goes back to the smaller scale style of Pitch Black, maybe I'll give it a shot.
-

pitch black was people running around on a planet. chronicles was more epic more in the direction of starwars
by skiff
I guess its kind like startrek vs starwars. And as far as the R rating gee more blood and saying fuck now and then who cares.
-
Sometimes a King, sometimes an outlaw, sometimes a hero, sometimes a villain. He leads an eventful life. I like him.
-
Lemme guess, PG 13?
-
Looks like it might be more fantasy oriented like the last film. Which was an awesome film btw. I just hope that there is more sci-fi to it, like pitch black.

I also prefer the gritty sci-fi of Pitch Black to the space fantasy of Chronicles
by lv_426
But I still did enjoy the second one. The best sequence was the whole Crematoria prison planet stuff, and the running from the sun on the surface gag. If they have more of that kind of deadly exo-planetary stuff, plus some cool monsters in this one, then it might be something cool. I assume it will be closer to Pitch Black's low budget style too. Isn't this third film much less of a spectacle in terms of budget compared to the second one?
-
The difference in quality, acting, story, drama, tension ... is off the scale. Riddick as a character CANNOT be the centre of a Universe-spanning story ... thats not what he is about. Its like having John McClane save Earth from Aliens.
-
Why the fuck would they want to do a 3rd one?
-
He's just an action star.
-
Ya know.....an intelligent sci fi movie not another piece of dumbed down supposed sci fi bollocks.
-
I really enjoyed Pitch Black, not only for the story and the overall visual feel, but also the way it was put together (shot selection, etc.). My only real complaint was that they showed too much of the monsters too early. I know you still have to have enough light to show the actors, but they could have built it up a little. To me, Chronicles is two stories. There's the part with the Necromongers and Riddick's "destiny" in the universe, and the part where he goes to rescue Jack from the prison planet. I think the part with the prison planet fits more in line with the character and the universe, and when you frame the other story against it, it makes it look...off. I enjoy the art design of the necromongers and the idea of the Underverse was interesting, but when Riddick kills their leader at the end you have to figure that kind of puts a halt on their plan to find it. Unless he fights every necromonger one-on-one, the movie that follows would have to be...full of political intrigue? I think Riddick works best with a small group in a tight situation - at least that's what I liked about Pitch Black and that's what I liked about the prison escape portion of Chronicles.
-
I thought Chronicles of Riddick was great but kinda got bored in Pitch Black
-
Second film expands the cult first one's reach. Directors and actor keep creative integrity. A large scale epic cult fantasy/sci-fi Genre series get's made to completion. And seriously, how many full on realised straight Genre sci-fi/fantasy alternative worlds of action/adventure heroic journey serials are there? There's really only Star Wars that's fully in those kind of waters head first - not that Riddick is close to Star Wars but it is (or was) playing in similar fantasy Genre waters. Highlander could have become a Genre touchstone of sorts also as a serial. As it's dead, a studio could buy rights to Highlander, re-release first Highlander in 3d with promise of a sequel. Use profits to finish off Highlander 2 with digital technology adding new scenes & refining movie, as is only about 2/3s of the movie was suppose to be, into a proper super-natural planet spanning sci/fi fantasy epic. Release in 3d on back of first re-release. Make 3rd new film on the immortal's homeworld, finishing off the trilogy and creating a new fully realised fantasy Genre film serial. How many films of this same type of fantasy Genre are there as serials or trilogies? Not that many i don't think.
-
Vin = Bargin Bin
-
The problem with Highlander, at least for me, was that all the wacky sci-fi stuff that Highlander II introduced just ruined the great mystical concept of the original. The whole idea that the immortals are just alien people from some generic 80's sci-fi planet was a crap place to steer the mythology towards.
-
The whole idea that the immortals are just alien people from some generic 80's sci-fi planet was a crap place..
-
I agree, it was a crap place in the film.. Not because the concept was crap, but because it was the Whole Crux of where the sequel was going and also it's bridge to the first film, but it barely gets filmed or explained/integrated properly!

Riddick is a brilliant character in PITCH BLACK, which was a script originally written by Jim & Ken Wheat. Twohy came on board, did a rewrite and directed the movie, which is a great science fiction movie with a really memorable anti hero. But after seeing the weak Chronicles of Riddick, written by David Twohy alone, I wonder if the Wheat brothers had a lot more to do with what made Pitch Black so good than Twohy did.
-
Based on that photo, I think Vin should be cast as the bald warrior Den in an R-rated version of Richard Corben's violent Neverwhere graphic novel.
-
They even turned Van Helsing from Dracula into this dude with a long dark coat, big hat and a machine gun like crossbow. Obviously aimed at macho image conscious teenagers. Though this time we get a bald macho guy with welding glasses Quite childish and silly.
-
i LOVED playing Riddick.

There is no reason both Pitch Black and Chronicles can't be liked.
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
They're both great movies with the same great character in different ways.
-
If Diesel wants a new franchise then great, just get rid of all that Necromonger bullshit. They suck as characters. SUCK BIGTIME. The only decent part of Chronicles was the opening 15 minutes and when they raced against the heat wave. Pitch Black was class because it had a small budget dirty sci fi look and all the characters were great. It was the anti hero against a merc. Mercs and Bounty Hunters will always be the central Riddick storyline. Fighting alien beasts is great but if anytime is given to this lame pussy Dune wannabee Necromonger shit then a potentially decent movie will get bogged down again. Why not just adapt the Butcher Bay game or Dark Athena. Theres a great movie right there.
-
Pitch Black and Chronicles, I even like the idea, one anti-hero in two very different situations making for two very different stories. And visually I think Chronicles is pretty damn interesting. Reminds me a little bit of Dune... maybe. But from what I've read this is going to be a lower budget production, add to that a story involving Riddick "trapped" on a planet fighting for survival (paraphrasing) and I think most likely this will be a throw back to Pitch Black. But then who knows besides them. We'll wait and see.
