I’ll get you, my pretty. And your little Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day too!

Published at:  Jan 19, 2012 12:31:11 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

There’s so much to love about this picture. Let’s get a little history on this, shall we? February 17th, 1939 is when Victor Fleming left the director’s chair in order to take over Gone With the Wind from George Cukor. Oddly enough, Cukor spent some time on Wizard of Oz as well after original director Richard Thorpe was fired.

Anyway, when Fleming left Oz toward the end of the shoot there was a party thrown for him and today’s picture comes from that party. Nobody looks particularly happy that Fleming is leaving, do they? There’s just so much going on in this shot. I love Margaret Hamilton sneaking some ice cream in costume. I love those great little character maquettes on the table. I love Fleming wielding what looks like a damn machete seconds away from cutting the cake.

So, a very neat little piece of film history. Thanks again to the great bunch of guys at the PEG for bringing it to the world. Click to enlargen!

  • That is epic history right there. I don't know much, if any, of the history of this movie, but it just proves that there is always a great story behind almost any film. Love it.

    Some further observations - Myrna Loy - Dorothy's stand-in...

    by misterblue

Yes, I do believe that is Myrna Loy next to Victor Fleming, that was my immediate thought. Don't know if they ever made a film together.

That is Dorothy/Judy's stand-in directly behind her. I forget her name offhand, but you can see they're both wearing the same costume.

Margaret Hamilton's hair is down, which is interesting, as it was up in the movie.

And Lahr is out of make-up, but not in Zeke costume, so it makes sense that this is perhaps end of the day and he's already been cleaned up.

Lastly, very curious that they are all wearing rather heavy coats/sweaters, as those light were killer hot. So it makes sense that this is after the day of shooting.

Fleming and Loy: TEST PILOT 1938 -

    by misterblue

Victor Fleming had just finished directing Myrna Loy in 1938's TEST PILOT, along with Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and Lionel Barrymore - so they must have been fresh friends. Gable and Fleming were old drinkin buddies, and he was the main reason Fleming was pulled from OZ over to GWTW. Gable had major pull!

Judy looks pensive, rubbing her hands. They had her on a lot of pills at the time to keep her going during the long shooting days. She would attribute her later substance abuse problems to the pharmaceutical experience of shooting Oz.

Here's a famous William Claxton photograph of Judy many years later about to go on stage in Vegas.

I assume the face Garland's pulling is down to the fact she thought it would be a pile of class A on the table, not a giant cake.

And isn't that the most forced 'party' ever!? I don't know why the people who make movies pretend to all get along and respect each other. Half of them look like they'd be happier sitting alone with a bottle of whisky.

Looks like the drum of an old fashioned ice cream maker. Just like my grandma used to have....actually it's in my garage now. It is a big wooden bucket with a metal drum inside....with a crank to make the drum go round and round. You put ice and salt in it to make it really cold. So I think that ice and ice cream drum with a little bit of ice cream on the sides.

Use Pink Flyod music for the soundtrack of course.

  • You know, the one that will probably star Milla Jovovich as Dorothy, who travels through a wormhole and teams up with a rusty old robot, a plant-man, and a genetically engineered half-man, half-lion chimera dude. Toto will be a little companion robot.

The wicked witch will be a weird green alien bitch.

Will probably have some music by Linkin Park and since there is a witch as a villain, also some music by Salem.

Coming to a theater near you, in 2015.
