Nearly An Hour Of Sony's AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Tokyo Press Conference...
Merrick here...
Japan is the first territory in which Marc Webb's THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will open...it therefore seems appropriate that one of the first press conferences for the film just happened in Tokyo, where evidently the movie was screened!?!?
Mr. Japanjpp has uploaded 58ish minutes of one of these Tokyo press conferences to YouTube. Nothing terribly revealing herein, although the discussion does shed light on the picture's overall approach (the interconnectivity and interrelationship of some of its characters, director Webb's preference for using practical effects and stuntwork whenever possible, how Gwen Stacy is portrayed in the film, and much more. Plus, it's always very trippy hearing Andrew Garfield speaking with his accent.
And...is that a snippet of James Horner's score for the film playing as the actors take the stage sty the beginning of the conference?
Thanks to Captain Wiggly for pointing us towards this...

Still pissed they cast ES as Gwen. Look at her. She IS Mary Jane.
by Behemoth
I've got no problem with a Mary Jane-less Spider-Man at all. I'd prefer to see them go the Gwen route for this one. But ironically, this casting for Gwen is as pathetic as Raimi's casting for Mary Jane. Neither actress fits the part at all, but in Emma's case, she DOES fit the Mary Jane role perfectly. That smokey voice, that tomboy-ish demeanor. I always imagined Gwen as much more of a girlie-girl, much more subdued, shy, even. Yeah, I know that's why they call it "acting," but ... as much as I disliked the Raimi Spider-Man and am all for a reboot, she is gonna be a tough metaphorical hurdle for me to metaphorically leap.

Let's take bets: How many combined minutes of "Spidey Without His Mask" time will there be?
by Behemoth
If Raimi was directing this, he'd have Spider-man's mask ripped off within ten seconds of his appearance in every fucking scene he's in. This is becoming the trend, I see. These big stars can't stand to have their face off camera for more than a few seconds, so there MUST be moments in battles where their masks are suddenly torn away. Downey got around the problem of an unbreakable mask with countless closeup shots of his face beneath the mask (which really looked silly, because it looked in those shots like his Iron Man helmet was ENORMOUS), and in the latest preview of the Avengers, we even see Cap America standing there with suit on, no mask. FUCK THAT!! It's like I say to my whore of choice nghtly ... KEEP THE MASK ON!!!

Seriously, canon or no canon, the whole idea that this guy gets bitten by a radioactive spider, absorbs said powers, and then has to GO OUT AND CREATE THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THOSE POWERS WITH SOME SILLY CONTRAPTION is just ... dumb. Organic web abilities make so, so much more sense.

THANK YOU! About goddamned time someone finally got that about the character. A lot of younger people grew up having no appreciation for this greatest of supporting characters and what she meant to who Peter Parker is and why that makes Spider-Man so great. As much as I loved a lot of what Sam Raimi did he fucked all Spidey fans for not representing this aspect of Spidey's story. Mary Jane Watson is an insipid, pale copy of groovy Gwen Stacy and was never in the same league. Ever.

the problem, was, and still is Avi Arad. Who apparently believes he has the formula to successful Spider-Man movies. He's not a writer. He not an artist. He's just some corporate toy exec who fell into the job and now enforces his own stupid ideas. He was all over Raimi controlling his every move and he has done the same with Marc Webb. He is a corporate douchebag. Plain and simple.

Really? The movie has "mediocre" written all over it. Its the continuation of the belief that people want to see "Indie" comic book adaptations of popular characters like Spider-man and X-Men. If you're one of those people - You're wrong. That's not an opinion. Its a fact. Spider-man and X-Men deserve the same epic vision of Donner's SUPERMAN. John Williams score included. This looks like the same kind of "Gen-X" crap the studios were trying to churn out in the mid to late nineties. Lets bottom line it: The studios and film makers now are smart enough to try to get great scripts for properties and hire people who take the projects seriously. BUT, there's no actual cinematic feeling to the movies anymore. You could probably write a more "realistic" version of Donner's SUPERMAN today, where the script matches up to every screenwriting guru's book and lectures. But, it won't have the excitement and wonder of that movie. I see this in Nolan's Batman films: They're expertly written and conceived, but, cinematically, they don't gel and succeed. I believe the reason why THE DARK KNIGHT was so well regarded was because it came the closest so far in combining craftsmanship with showmanship. The X-MEN franchise is the same: The people behind the films obviously take the source material and fan opinions seriously, making sure the scripts and concepts of the films are well executed. Yet, the movies don't have the same uniqueness of character design or cinematic feeling of STAR WARS or even Burton's first Batman movie. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN looks to be falling in with this trend. Its just depressing that people are automatically making excuses for it because of this belief, particularly in America that you always have to give everything a positive spin or else its automatically suspect. So, I'm making a stand: Having not seen this film I still have very little faith that it will be exceptional. Take that.
-
You're wrong and will eat those words after the next trailer is shown. Take that.
-
... was created to be Peter Parker's wife. She first appeared on his first full day of classes in college, in issue 31, the issue immediately following the one where Peter finally tore it with Betty Brant. But after they kept keeping Peter & Gwen apart (sometimes in a pretty silly manner), the folks at Marvel realized it was time for them to get married... except they also thought Peter wasn't ready to get married. So, off she went. Stan Lee says it was Gerry Conway's decision. Conway says Lee approved. Regardless, it was something that, if you were around at the time, you didn't forget. The scene of Peter walking out on Harry who was tripping on drugs (and literally begging Peter to stay with him) to go after Harry's father was classic. "So, it comes down to this, Parker- do you stay and help your best friend, or do you go get revenge? Not much of a choice, is it?" Any movie that faithfully portrays the death of Gwen Stacy (& I doubt it will ever happen) will make more money than they'll be able to count.

You guys shitting your pants over it are silly. Too soon for a reboot? Why? The last Raimi film sucked and yes it was his fault, and the other two were not masterpieces. Comics reboot and retell origins all the time. This has more good going for it than bad.
-
Also, what exactly is your definition of "indie", tophat? I'm sincerely asking because you're saying this "belief" is the cause of unimaginative movies. Not disagreeing with you, nor am I particularly looking forward to this movie. Just wondering what you're talking about.

I've always wondered when Emma Stone found out that Gwen eventually bites it
by Al
Cuz no way she bites it in this movie, and I remember an interview about 2-ish months before The Help came out said she had read the "Death of the Stacys" TPB. But I'm figuring it's something like, "Horray, I've got my own mega Hollywood franchise I can milk for a five movies--- wait, what the hell?" Webb said the Gwen Stacy story (which, obviously, when he says that he means Gobby tossing her off the bridge) is his favourite so I'm thinking that she probably won't bite it in the 2nd film but by movie 3? She's toast. ETA 2016-18ish. And I will weep like a little bitch with a skinned knee. Just because it's Emma Stone.
-
I don't wish those two anything but personal happiness but, hey, if they do have a miserable break up in between now and starting the 2nd flick she may get tossed by Gobby then. But I do hope this movie does well because that seems to be where the grand arc of the film series seems to be headed and I think that's an awesomely moving story to tell. Hellova lot more emotional impact than Peter jazz-dancing, y'know?
-
Gwen at funeral, could be Uncle Ben, yes, but the first pics surfaced of the production were just solo Gwen at a funeral and you'd figure Peter would be there. So, yeah, Captain Stacy is done this time around & Uncle Ben as well. Lotta father figures dropping like flies in this flick, which will probably drive Pete & Gwen closer together.
