Keys, Apes, McFly, Lee, And More!! "Hello"...

Published at:  Jan 18, 2012 9:44:23 AM CST

Merrick here...

...with a quick and impressive little video from Matthijs Vlot (that is a very cool name).  The nature of the video pretty much speaks for itself - I discovered it when composer David Arnold (STARGATE, INDEPENDENCE DAY, several James Bond films, TV's magnificent SHERLOCK, the forthcoming 2012 Olympics) linked out to it via his Twitter stream.

I cant decide if this is a case of mad genius, of someone with too much time on their hands, or both. Whatever the case, this is fun and rather cool.

And the things people do with it. That was nice. So many memories of great films smacking me in the face. Film knows what I want....so give it to me.

There's a lot to be said for making people laugh. Did you know that that's all some people have? It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan.

CTM is often funny, and even insightful...

    by pink_apocalypse

...sometimes I crack up over his subject line rants.

But often he just spoils it with the homophobic hateful stuff. I hold out hope that he'll become good friends with some gay guy somewhere, and realize it's not cool.

It's possible. I've seen it happen with a racist once.

rtambree...NO Fuckin way that was crabbed together in 2-3 days!

    by cheif brody

Just scouring all the footage for the right combination of words would have taken a week or more, let alone gathering up all the films and digitizing or converting the scene files they needed.

Editing it and matching those great clips up to the music could have been done in 2 or 3 days...but it's the gathering & ingesting of the footage that's a real time consumer.

I had to do a similar project for work when I had to track down shots of characters "dancing" and "High Fiving" from "The Simpsons", "Seinfeld", "Friends", "Suddenly Susan" & "Everbody Loves Raymond" for a May Sweeps spot set to a custom theme song for our 5-8pm lineup. It was a long two weeks of 8 hour days sitting in a dark edit bay cycling thru hundreds of episodes looking for those specific scenes and actions from all those shows and logging the timecodes.

And that was just dancing and high fives I was looking for...not actual snippets of dialog. Those are even tougher to weed out, cuz ya can't fast forward!!

No, rtambree...Even if this editor used some sort of filtering software method to narrow down these clips...or if they were just remembering all those scenes out of their head...It's the gathering of all those elements that takes time.

  • It's not like you'd have to watch all the movies until the phrase came up. You'd already know which movies had which phrases by the script text searches

You have just guaranteed that I will never, ever watch that documentary. Not only that, but I'll tell people that I've seen it, and I'll tell that that it's shit. Stay away from it. A waste of an hour and a half that you'll never get back.

rtambree...Yes...that's what I meant about the filtering software.

    by cheif brody

a keyword search would save ya time. When we got "Seinfeld" in sydication, it came with a clip reel & database CD-ROM that would sort clips for you based on your search perameters. But there was still the tracking down of the clip reel or episode, finding the timecodes, digitizing the media, etc. That software helped, but I found jockeying thru the episodes in FF I would find even better clips than what I searched for initially.

The spot I did was done back in the early 00's and none of those show's scripts were readily available for a text scan and had to be done manually.

Either way...what this person did, in finding large chunks of the song lyrics spoken verbatim, and then finding the random collection of one or two word connectors was prolly pretty tough, even if they had filtering software at play or were just pulling all those clips from memory.

Just sayin...it def took longer than 2-3 days to make that.

    Either way...it was impressive.

The first time my volume was low cause I'm at work. I just thought meh. But then when I realized the dialogue was lyrics to a song I went back and rewatched it with the volume up. I must say, it was impressive.

    Mine take about 2-3 weeks

    by lao_che_air_freight

But I dont have to scour the internet for footage - I have 2000 DVD's and Blu Rays to draw from. For this reason alone I will embrace physical formats over streaming, I need the source material right at hand, ready to go..

This one took about three weeks I think, all told, evenings and weekends..

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oatTt83g_s

Might as well plug my latest..it's just a straight up tribute to Roeg and Cammel's film "Performance" - since it was only one film, it took about week.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gs3BzS_1nTo

It's a fun hobby, I just wish SOPA and PIPA didn't threaten me getting them out online..

    by gotilk

    Yeah, like Einstein!

That was REALLY nicely done. Anyone could have put that together with just about anything, from any set of films. But this guy picked bits from GREAT films. And made some really fun choices. It almost feels like a genuine (but dorky, in all the right ways) love note from a film fan to his girlfriend. Bravo!
