CLERKS animated series screening report.

Published at:  Feb 18, 2000 8:16:17 PM CST

A fine fellow named Decimator was kind enough to send along a synopsis of his experience at a test screening of the upcoming (originally scheduled for March, now rumored to be pushed back to the end of May) Clerks animated series, based of course on the Kevin Smith film of the same name.

For more information, including video clips, check out View Askew's official and very well-done site at: http://www.viewaskew.com/news/jan00/3.html

I just came back from seeing a test screening of 2 episodes of Clerks the
animated series. They said we were the first people to be seeing it.

I had gone to a Dogma screening last year and they got my name from that, I
think. They had the screening all the way over in West Hollywood, in what
I think were Miramax offices.

Anyway, they showed us 2 episodes and had us fill out things and then asked
us a whole bunch of questions.

Overall, let me say that I really liked the show. I am a Clerks fan and a
Mallrats fan (I know...) , so I am biased. But the shows were pretty good
and really, really funny.

The first one was kind of an introduction. Dante and Randal battle against
an evil Lex Luthor-type guy who opens a super-convenience store across the
street from where the Clerks work called the Quicker Stop.

The show has some really funny stuff and some stuff that seemed a little slow.

But the second show was AMAZING. If you can believe this... it was a clip
show. The second episode!! Dante and Randal get locked into the freezer of
the store and flashback to all their old episodes. And they show a bunch
of stuff from the first episode we just had just watched.

There was this one thing where they show them working in convenience stores
in India and all the Indians are upset that the convenience store guys are
all American and don't speak Hindu. Then they have them working in England
where they get into a fight with a guy because cigarettes are called fags.

But the funniest thing was a clip of Steven Spielberg's latest movie--
Flintstone's List. They show cavemen being loaded on a train car and then
their feet stick out the bottom of the car and they walk away.

The other cool thing about the show is that all of the guys from the movie
are doing their own voices.

And as for the animation, the show looks a lot like the comic book. they
did All the characters are drawn with thick black lines and really capture
the live actors from the movie. Especially Randall and Jay.

Each episode also has these cool safety tips like on the
Superfriends. With Jay and silent Bob and Charles Barkley teaching kids
magic and camping stuff. Every time they come out, they yell at Barkley to
leave. And he does, very sadly.

I'm not sure what else to say. They kept us a while to answer questions
and talk into tape recorders.

Many thanks for the info, Decimator.

Smith? Go make him stop everything but breathing and then force that scumbag to write GREEN ARROW at last. He should be making up on his promises. Hey Kevin, Mack

    Something to cheer giddily about

    by jasondkeldar

Finally finally finally.. An animated series that captures the spirit of KS' movies while still being clean enuff to be shown on TV.. Thankfully, we haven't to wait too much longer for this, as I know the time til summer's release of the first of the new Superhero flicks will drag with all the speed of a postal clerk's fingers.. Assuming that this means KS won't have to do too much voice over work, eh?? But as for Jay, how to censor him for tv, unless this happens to be on the network of OZ???

    hmm...

if Smith won't take a long enough a break to write GREEN ARROW for all us comics fanboys, perhaps a compromise: bring Ollie Queen back from the grave and send him convience shopping! (hell, at least get some funky cameos in of Smith's comic work characters -- like Mike Grell did back in the day putting Ollie in Monaco playing cards against Bond in his 007 graphic novel...)

Sorry Smith Fans, Gonna have to wait until May for this one

    by skylewalker

That's right, ABC, in their infinite wisdom, has delayed the premiere of this show until May 31, just in time for SUMMER. I would like to see the show earlier and personally believe this is ABC's attempt to kill the show before it starts, which really pisses me off. ABC cancels Twin Peaks, cancels that Claire Danes show, never shows Mulholland, and now they pull this shit. It's safe to say that I HATE ABC.

    This sounds verry cool.

    by docbosch

I've never seen Clerks(::gasp::), but starnge enough, i still know about it. I'm like one of those people that are cultured, but not traveled, ya know? Anyway, i know Kevin Smith(not personally) by all his other films, and this sound like something you would imagine him to do. I try to picture the show and I keep conjering images of the MTV toon "Downtown"(whatever happened to that show?), and then, this dude mentions that it's drawn with thick lines, just like downtown. Weird.

    HBO beats ABC

    by decastro

Take this show off of ABC and put it onto HBO. They could do whatever they wanted and keep the spirit of the movie.

    37!

    by down10

This show looks and sounds great, but I'm a little afraid that it will be just another Simpsons rip-off (see "Family Guy"), right down to film parodies... Heck, I love the Simpsons and even its imitators, but here's hoping "Clerks:TAS" can hold its own. ABC was right not to want to air that "Flintstones' List" gag-- Holocaust humor is not very cool with a lot of people.

    Response to Decimator and Valvoline

    by otismcgroat

For the most part, Decimator was right on with his review... (I was in LA and went to the same screening with a friend) But as for Valvoline's comment about the Holocaust humor... don't read too much into the joke... it was a pretty funny joke and by no means disrespectful -- But the more important thing is.. it was by no means the "funniest part of the show." The two shows were hysterical -- and Decimator was right -- the first one was funny but the the second was crazy hysterical -- The show definitely takes a lesson from the Simpson's and uses animation for all its worth .. This is no Family Guy-type Simpson's rip-off -- Family Guy was derivative and what jokes there were -- were funny only by recognition .. Clerks:TAS manages to take absurd situations like being locked in the Quickie Mart and play with TV conventions -- such as the Clip Show format ... Its a great joke and the two shows I saw had lots and lots of more clever little details.. For instance, the Quicker Mart moving in across from the Quickie Mart -- that is great (you have to see it) -- and the bad guy is outrageous ... Anyway, Clerks should definitely be getting better treatment from ABC -- Why bother keeping crap like Bloopers or Who wants to be a millionaire? when this stuff sits waiting in the wings -- There is no reason that shouldn't be on TV -- From articles that I have read, it seem slike ABC is trying to hint that the show is too racy or controversial for TV -- If controversial means funny.... There is nothing offensive or shocking in either of the first two episodes... Just great TV... I can't wait to see the rest. (By the way, I am no crazy KS fan -- haven't even seen Dogma or Mallrats-- although I really liked Clerks and Chasing Amy... :)
