A Longish Trailer For Tobe Hooper's DJINN!

Nordling here.

Some of the dialogue could use some subtitles, but I think the general mood and tone of the piece comes through this trailer for filmmaker Tobe Hooper's DJINN, the horror film made in Abu Dhabi about a family that returns home to that country to find... something.... inhabits their new home.

We've been wanting original horror concepts for a long time, and sure, the haunted house tropes are all through this trailer, but the idea of exploring Middle Eastern mythology for a modern horror film is very intriguing to me, and the trailer works enough for me to really look forward to seeing this film when it gets released here in the States.  Plus, Tobe Hooper's return to filmmaking is always welcome and I hope this new film is a triumphant return to the genre for him.

Here's the trailer - thanks to First Showing:

Nordling, out.

    Tobe Hooper?

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

Why would anyone be excited about his return? He gave us one classic horror movie. One. Granted, in the 80's he gave us a few good ones, but TCM was it, his only shot at epic. What made TCM so great was the same thing that has made every movie he;s directed since fail; horrible production values and a director with a bad eye. And as far him getting "railroaded" on Poltergeist, bullshit!!!! My wife's uncle was a stuntman in the 80 s and early 90's. (Holy fuck! the stories he tells!) and he worked on Poltergeist. I once sat there for two hours listening to hi rail on Hooper and praise Spielberg because Hooper was so fucking coked up out oif his mind during the whole shoot that Spielberg through force of will alone made that movie. Everyone knows Spielberg directed it, but railroading Hooper? Hooper was barely conscience the entire shoot. Dude, I've seen pictures from the shoot, Ill call my wife's uncle up later roday and see if I can get them to Quint. Hooper's in the background of a lot of them and you can SEE how fucking wired he is. Railroaded

Seriously though, I've heard some freaky stories about the Djinn from Iranian friends. But Arabs dead-on believe they are real, hell the Koran says so, right? Supposedly God made them out of "smokeless fire" instead of dust and they live out in dead desert areas and can call up sandstorms and whirlwinds. They're sort of similar to the scarier European legends about faeries and elves. Obviously this in a Arab funded production made for Arab-speaking markets. They just hired on Tobe as director. Free trip to Abu Dhabi (hey, the Emirates are the nicest parts of the Middle East, great shopping, luxury hotels, friendly people, money) and he probably needs the money, which is sad, really, but that's the way it goes.

    about djinns

    by amin

i'm an arab (tunisian) and in my country nobody talks about djinns because people are scared to death about them. the word for "crazy" in arab is "majnun" which means litterally "possesed by a djinn". i have heard hundred of stories of people who disappeared and were kidnapped by djinns and things like that. abd yes it's written in the koran and it's also said that they are the old gods before islam (like hubal, al amanat), beings who corrupted ancient angelic magic and made themselves whorshipped by humans.

    Graham Masterton's novel The Djinn

    by m_prevette

was published back in the late 70's and was a loony horror tale that had some good eerie moments. Lots of great mythology, genies in bottles, whirlwinds and faces getting sliced off. That would have made a nice potboiler of a movie. This movie has no relation but, anything in Hooper's leaden hands gives me reason to worry.

I'll always love Hooper, even though he only made one really great movie--and a couple good ones (Funhouse, Eaten Alive). Poltergeist I give to Spielberg. As for the trailer, it sucks. Way too much boring exposition before a little action in the last 45 seconds. Only cool thing--and it was pretty freaking cool-was the ultrasound picture of what looked like a half child/half demon fetus

    Coked up or not...

    by Von_Trierstein

If Tobe Hooper was literally not doing anything on the Poltergeist set he would have been fired immediately on such a huge project. I love Spielberg to death and Poltergeist would have sucked without his guiding hand, but the guy's got such a big imagination and a big mouth it's just got to be insanely hard to collaborate and not to get overpowered by him. Especially when you're working on one of his ideas. I imagine him in the late 60's as that one PA who won't shut the fuck up with his opinions... only he was probably right most of the time.
