Ain't It Cool News (

I am – Hercules!!

Series returning tonight:
Blue Bloods (CBS)
A Gifted Man (CBS)
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (IFC)
Merlin (Syfy)
Nikita (CW)
Portlandia (IFC)
Supernatural (CW)

“Portlandia” continues to remind me of a really long SNL digital short. Tonight brings a fairly fitfully installment about a Portland couple (Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein) who travel to Los Angeles to track down a very talented bartender (Andy Samberg).

I find “The Misadventures of Todd Margaret,” still starring “Arrested Development” castmates David Cross and Will Arnett (“Up All Night”), no funnier than I found it last season, but the show did somehow secure the services of “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm. It’s strange how IFC keeps airing series starring the stars of far more popular series.

they don't cancel Nikita... Think they can make that better if they tryy... Also... I want Firefly back!!

  • They were in their prime just about when Clinton's 1996 Telecommunications Act, Clear Channel, Viacom and Steve Jobs were just beginning to hammer the final nails in rock and roll's coffin.

    Decent album, out now.

  • Well, I should have said "A better program" - singular - since the only show worth watching on Fridays is still Supernatural. Wait, I know what you're thinking - "Hasn't this season of Supernatural been kind of lame?" Yes, it has been sub-par compared to earlier seasons, but that should tell you how tremendously awful all of the other Friday night shows have been - not to mention all of the other stinkers shown during the week. For instance, look at shows like Chuck, Grimm, and Fringe. They are unwatchable and noxious effluvia. I don't know ANYONE with half a brain who actually likes those shows. A person can go catatonic from watching such rubbish.

Read the list of TV shows you watch. Supernatural is ridiculously bad. I do watch some of the shows on your list. You said, insulting my taste for watching Suburgatory: That you would describe Suburgatory as entertaining tells me that you're easily amused. That's okay. Not everyone has to have respectable standards concerning television programming. The networks count on people like you to tune into their shlock so that they can harvest the advertising dollars. _____________________________________ People like me, and you, you mean? So I have low standards. And so do you, with thinking Supernatural is a good show- As a fan of horror, I really tried to watch most of the first season, and it was toothless garbage, the same kind of toothless garbage that might make you seem to, you know, have low standards. We all do. Judging others standards based on your personal likes and dislikes, is at best, juvenile. Your list of shows that, as you say, have held your attention for at least a little while are: American Horror Story -Supernatural -Frontline -The Universe -Vietnam in HD -Man vs Wild -Alpine Skiing on the now defunct Universal Sports Channel -Attack of the Show -Xplay -Best Recipes Ever -A Michael Bublé Christmas I watched American Horror Story and found it much much better than expected. Did you notice or recognize the Bernard Herrmann musical themes, and a theme from the original Halloween? Creepy adult fare that sticks with you, not the same formulaic crap that is Supernatural. While we share a liking for some of these shows, some of your other watchables are laughable, but maybe you were just having fun with your list. At least you do have a modicum of taste, even though it may not be as discerning as you believe. I've been watching old Alfred Hitchcock presents and Hour myself more than anything else lately. Ok, now saddle up and get back on your high horsey.

You say, I don't know ANYONE with half a brain who actually likes those shows. _____________________________________ Careful, that's coming dangerously close to name calling. It seems as if you do not enjoy TV watching, except for a couple exceptions, just so you can insult those with wider ranges of taste as having inferior standards. Your pompous veneer is so thin you can see right through it, squire. It is a fool's game you are playing.

Now that's just the type of critical thinking that makes AICN so special.

  • In case you want to see for yourself how great or awful they are.

You call "Supernatural" 'ridiculously bad', yet you say you've only watched part of the first season. You can't judge the entire series, which is in its seventh season, if you only watched part of the first season. The fact that you referred to it as formulaic proves that you haven't been watching the last 6 years and don't really know what you're talking about. The show has grown tremendously since the first season, and there's a reason it's critically-acclaimed and has such a loyal following.

    by OutsideChance

    ...plays like a damn documentary.

  • RnR is a particular genre of music, no different than country or blues (and, really, just an offshoot of both), that just happened to enjoy a decades long string of popularity because a particular segment of the population-baby boomers and Generation X-favored it over other genres. As those groups head into their 50s and 60s and stopped buying records, the market for rock and roll fell off dramatically. Their kids are listening to hip hop and other genres.

Mcgootoo, you made a couple of excellent points in your rant.

You are correct that Supernatural was not a quality show in its first season. Far too often it relied on the "Monster of the Week" formula, although it did somewhat set up the story arc for the next few seasons. However, the writing became significantly better after that first season. It was vastly more watchable than any other shows in its time slot or even shows screening on the same day. You claim that you're a fan of horror. I find that very difficult to believe since you gave up on Supernatural. A true horror fan would not turn his back on a show like Supernatural after using such limited sample data. That you enjoyed American Horror Story tells me that you're not entirely devoid of discerning taste. Limited taste, no question, but at least you stumbled upon something that momentarily shook you out of your Suburgatory-induced coma. For that, I applaud you. AHS was chock full of homages to other horror influences. They were quite obvious IF you understood what you were seeing and hearing. You might want to search online to find out what they were. As you know, I never personally attack anyone on these boards. I cannot abide such low-class behavior. I'd much rather keep the focus on the media content that we're all here to discuss. I'll continue to post from a viewpoint that's based upon high standards. I hope that you continue to post based on your...well...let's call them 'standards', which is okay. We needn't pretend that rubbish on tv doesn't appeal to some people. After all, bad tv has a right to exist.

heres why Smallville shit fuck is a liar

    by Xiphos_2

The first season of SN set EVERYTHING up you fucking pan face liking ass munchner.

  • But, it certainly did not set the stage for a majority of what unfolded in the following years of the series. Anyone who is a true fan and understands the series knows this to be true. I suppose you might be one of those people who watched Supernatural for a few seasons, and then decided that you had gleaned enough information to speak knowledgably about the entire run of the show. Obviously, that is not true. Also, please refrain from using racial slurs in your posts. It's an ugly thing to do, and it reflects poorly on your ability to converse in an intelligent and polite manner.

So Portlandia is like Dick in a Box? On a Boat?

    by gridlockd

How isit like a digital short film? Because it's half sketch and stars a former SNL guy? Reminds me of Kids in the Hall with a throughline. And that's a very good thing.

    by mynamesdan

but my friends who were into them were in bands i didn't like. <p> Todd margaret has all the ingredients of a show i should love, but it never makes me laugh. why is that?

  • I guess I watch it and will continue to do so this season because I like David Cross and I dig most of the actors in it. It's not a good show, but the actors themselves charm me into watching it. I feel similarly about Portlandia. Most of the sketches are just awful, or stupid, and some I find painful -- total groaners. But I watch because I like the two leads. Does anybody else feel similarly about these shows? Like, you really want to like these shows but don't when you actually watch, yet you stick around because of the actors?

I don't share the hate for Portlandia. I like the gentle but pointed satire of hipster life, and laugh out loud many times per episode. Talking about how it's "not funny" is such an exercise in pointlessness. You don't like it - move on to Leno or something more obvious.
