New This Week

“Justified’s” excellent second season was the season of the Bennetts – Dickie, Doyle, Coover, Mags and would-be adopted daughter Loretta McCready. I think my favorite season-two episode – and the one that hewed most closely to the series’ Elmore Leonard roots – was the one about Rachel’s brother-in-law, a halfway house escapee. This was also the season that explored – via a forgotten load of evidence-room cash – the depth of Raylan Givens’ commitment to his fabulous ex-wife. It’s interesting that Leonard’s next novel, “Raylan,” features a coal-mine exec named Carol Conlan (not Carol Johnson) and dope-dealing brothers named Dickie and Coover Crowe (as opposed to Dickie and Coover Bennett or Dewey Crowe).

An almost-six-hour HBO miniseries adapted by writer-director Todd Haynes (“Poison,” “Safe,” “Velvet Goldmine,” “Far From Heaven,” “I’m Not There”) from the novel by James M. Cain (“Double Indemnity,” “The Postman Always Rings Twice”), “Mildred Pierce” follows a pie-making Southern California mom who finds her life upended by the Great Depression and a philandering husband.

It’s melodramatic, full of random-seeming plot twists and a little weird thespianily, and will keep viewers guessing until the very naked end. The story follows Mildred (Kate Winslet) and her class-conscious daughter, Veda (Morgan Turner and, in the final hours, Evan Rachel Wood), and the project’s fatal flaw is that Veda comes off from the get-go as such a two-dimensional little witch it’s hard to muster much rooting interest in the relationship.

I will say it was not much of a chore getting through the five hours (though I wouldn’t have minded if the opera performances were cut down a bit), and Guy Pearce is winning as the dashing customer who sweeps Mildred off her feet. Former pretty boy James LeGros (“Drugstore Cowboy,” “Singles”) has embraced is inner character actor and gained all sorts of weight, as if to better serve his surname.

TV Squad says:

… made me long for the visual verve and brittle clarity of the 1945 Joan Crawford movie of the same name. I came away from HBO's five-part series with a great deal of respect for Winslet's impassioned performance, but so many other aspects of 'Mildred Pierce' worked against Winslet's naturalistic style that parts of the miniseries ended up being, frankly, a slog. …

HitFix says:

… I found it a slog to get through. … Veda is so radiantly unpleasant that only a complete sap would fail to see that she's rotten to the core and not worth so much sacrifice and angst. Parental love can blind you to your kid's faults for a while, but not for year after year, not after everything Veda says and does over the course of the story. …

Time says:

… If you feel like you would like Mildred Pierce, in other words--if this kind of period piece is catnip to you--then I bet you will love Mildred Pierce. If not--well, at least, you might admire Haynes' enthusiasm.

The Wall Street Journal says:

… What nothing can alter, or overcome, is the fact that the basic story of Mildred Pierce makes no sense. On any level. Over five-plus hours, the miniseries would have had time to explore every nuance. But there are so few that rise above artifice, and so little dramatic action driving the plot, that even an actor as talented as Ms. Winslet can hardly fill the dead spaces. …

USA Today says:

… so gorgeous, even in its re-creation of the Depression, that it practically shimmers. It's also slow to the point where "languid" doesn't even begin to do it justice. Insomniacs should snap up the DVD release the instant it's available.…

The New York Times says:

… The pace is luxuriant and sometimes slow, taking a long time to wind up to its gothic, almost campy denouement, but that doesn’t mean that the detours are not enjoyable. … doesn’t make the most of the mythic clash of mother, lover and ungrateful child.

The Los Angeles Times says:

… not just great television, it's a revelation. Wresting James M. Cain's original story of ambition and maternal morality from the camp-classic embrace of the 1945 Joan Crawford film, Haynes has created not only a rich and nuanced vehicle for his A-list cast — among them Kate Winslet, Evan Rachel Wood and Guy Pearce — he has given us a rare and valuable gift: an American melodrama about class. …

The Washington Post says:

… What propelled me through “Mildred Pierce” — in what seemed like really no time at all — was its rich attention to domestic details. Haynes and his collaborators bring the same fetish for style and decor that elevated “Far From Heaven” into a beguiling dream, from the everyday objects to the extravagant. Great thought has gone into the furniture, into Mildred’s practical house dresses — even the dollar bills and old-fashioned stop signs. That’s at least part of the secret to Haynes’s success: Feel is the most important and most intangible thing, and subtext really is the context.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says:

… engrossing … As much as the mother-daughter relationship is intended to be the core of "Mildred Pierce," it may also be the most strained, melodramatic element. The Mildred-as-proto-feminist and Mildred-as-restaurateur story lines feel more real; her conflicts with Veda sometimes come across as heightened reality and occasionally drift into soap opera territory. …

The San Francisco Chronicle says:

… what director Todd Haynes has done with the material is something else entirely, and something not to be missed. Eliciting extraordinary performances from a cast headed by Oscar winner Kate Winslet in the title role and with a visually thrilling attention to period detail and rich cinematography by Ed Lachman, Haynes both celebrates and wrestles with the potboiling melodrama of Cain's story. Except for a few scenes, he wins the bout.…

The Boston Herald says:

… with almost six hours spread over three consecutive Sundays, Haynes veers off the road. His attention to detail is mind-numbing. …

The Boston Globe says:

… he miniseries is a soap opera, and it does drag a little early on, before the stakes have grown high. Also, Haynes takes a few melodramatic moments too many feet over the top — the injuring of Veda’s throat, for example, which rises into an almost laughable delirium. But those excesses are forgivable in this otherwise masterful, faithful, and deluxe adaptation. …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

… That essential connection – super needy mother, withholding, vicious daughter – isn’t fully developed. It could be that Haynes' vision of a sweeping mother-daughter story wants for a complexity, a vast emotional grandeur, that the writing doesn’t give us. …

Variety says:

… After a plodding start, "Mildred" becomes increasingly absorbing. And while creative license to be more explicit isn't always an asset, in this case -- from Wally and Mildred's fumbling trysts to her sensuous coupling with Monty -- the effect is to render key moments and acts of betrayal more startling and powerful. …
