A Cool And Sandy 3 Minute Clip From MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL!!
Merrick here...
I'm hearing exceedingly good things about MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL, and INCREDIBLES helmer Brad Bird's first foray into live-action direction.
There's a new three minute clip making the rounds which seems to bear out the "badass" adjective many people who've seen this project are throwing around. Yeah, it does look a little like a particular level in MODERN WARFARE 3. But, I really like MODERN WARFARE 3, so that's more than fine by me.
Embeds abound for this clip - we're using one from DailyBlam.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL opens this Friday in many IMAX theaters and the following week in broader/standard release.
HD of the same is HERE!

The 'jump out of incredibly fast moving car and just roll out the momentum' takes me out of a movie so fast.
-
Editing feels too slow, and meandering, while the coverage seems weird, like they didn't know what to point the camera at.

Can I also be on the ground floor of showing my superior intellect by needlessly bitching about this movie? I, for one, thought it looked cool. But I am a moron, apparently.

I'm really looking forward to this. There hasn't be a great action adventure film in theaters in some time. I watched the "G.I. Joe 2" trailer everyone was so excited about, and it's a well edited trailer, but it's more of the same ridiculous, cartoony miles-over-the-top type of action and high tech weaponary stuff I've seen a dozen times in recent years. "MI" Ghost Protocol" looks much more fun to me.

He brings it in all his movies, even the ones that sucked like War of the Worlds. And he gets a lifetime pass from me for Collateral. And true, the Mission: Impossible films have nothing to do with the original series. The original series involved a team of many different people with different talents. It was closer to Ocean's 11 than "The Tom Cruise Show with the Guy on the Computer", but they were decent action flicks. And what else is there this season? Sherlock Holmes? Sure, Robert Downey Jr is cool but if the first one and the trailer to this one are any indication, these movies somehow manage to get rid of the detective part of the novels in favor of blowing shit up while still managing to be boring. This holiday season blows for movies. I never thought I'd miss Harry Potter. Well, I still don't miss Harry Potter but you get my point.

...Bayerische Motoren Werke. New 6 series looks shite. Film looks good, though. They've all been fun so far, save for John Woo's installment, which was as shit as everything else John Woo's done since he came to Hollywood.

more movies need to shoot with IMAX cameras...way more immersive then 3D...the depth and clarity to the IMAX scenes in Dark Knight and Revenge of the Fallen were amazing...Dark Knight Rises should make even better use if it...more directors need to follow Christopher Nolan's push for IMAX...James Cameron's 3D needs to fade away

It's a 6 series that has a canvas/nylon top (like the 1), and it looks like the owner tried to put it up during the storm and it got ripped off (he was chasing it down the street). A sudden 50-60MPH wind could shred a [soft] vert roof just like that ... not sure what your're nitpicking ... ?

So he gets the benefit of the doubt on this one.

That is REALLY well-directed. Clearly not made up on the fly then stitched together in Avid (like so many crappy recent movies). There is a progression and a logic to the scene. If the rest of the film is even remotely this good, it should be quite a movie.
-

Best of all, the scene is really visually interesting... reminiscent of how Hitchcock approached
by Brian Hopper
an action scene. The sandstorm is arresting to look at, and Bird uses it fully by pausing the action at several points so we can absorb the eerie atmospherics. I'm not saying this is on the level of North by Northwest (that remains to be seen)... however, there is a dash here of Hitchcock's careful integration of a setting into the action a la the airplane attack on Cary Grant in NxNW, etc. Very impressive action scene IMHO.
-
And currently at 95% on RT. Can't wait. That has to be the best reviewed "big action" movie in quite some time.

but if a midget with a lesbian haircut stole my car in the middle of a sandstorm, I'd be slightly annoyed.

I was slightly worried Bird could pull it off because he's never done anything like this before. Well, not very worried because I really don't care about a 4th M:I flick, but the thought had passed through my head that he could fuck up the staging or the pace. Looks like he hit it out of the fucking ballpark! What could have been a really confusing, boring and ultimately stupid scene was filled with gripping tension. And that's with no backstory or any clue what the fuck is going on! Now I actually want to see this film and prior to seeing this I was pretty meh about it. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Although I agree jumping out of a car doing 80mph is dumb as fuck
by Jaster Mareel
It was sort of a trick used in Speed. There was no way in fucking hell that bus was going to make that jump, which amped up the tension to an incredible degree. Then Yan De Bont CHEATS by having the bus go off an invisible fucking ramp! In this scene I kept waiting for Cruise to put on his seatbelt, or see what kind of strategy he would employ for the impact. Instead he just jumps for it! Because that would have of course severely crippled him at least, it's a cheat, but this is the movies after all and it works in its own deformed logic. Remember that this is the franchise that if you kick a gun buried in sand, it shoots straight up 4 feet. That one bothers me more though because the jump-out-of-car thing is sort of a Hollywood staple at this point.
-
Research things better dude. Abrams only produced the film. Orci and Kurtzman and Lindeof? Their names are nowhere to be found on the credits. Admiring a film is "sucking someones dick" Maybe MI4 is actually a good film, did you ever think about that? Oh that's impossible because Abrams is involved right? Give me a freaking break already. So far, everything I have heard about this film is nothing but good.

96% on Rotten Tomatoes right now. The only negative review seems to complain about the movie's politics more than anything else. I can't wait, and envy you! The Cruise hate is just hysterically funny, most of it centering around his supposed gayness (he would seem to be bi at most) and his Scientology (pretty strange stuff, but as others have said, the core beliefs of most religions are pretty absurd if you're not a part of it). People more upset with him jumping on a couch (wtf?) than, say, Mel Gibson's bigoted rants amuse me greatly. Jumping on a couch? So fucking what? Can't wait.

Attended a free IMAX screening of GHOST PROTOCOL in Denver last night and it proved to be a very entertaining and worthwhile night at the movies for my good friend and I. Bird's direction is pretty confident from the opening prison break scene in which Ethan Hunt is mysteriously amongst the psychotic inmates. As to why he's there, well, you'll learn that in due time. The 2 hour and 13 minute running time was, for the most part, very well paced and kept the audience involved from the beginning to the very end of the film. Not a fan of the series as a whole (the first two are pretty bad in my opinion and the third one was decently entertaining), I can easily say that Ghost Protocol is the shiniest and most entertaining of the series. The M: I Team goes off the grid early on in the film and the rest of the film can pretty much be broken down into "action set pieces" that continue to try to top one another as the film goes on. Josh Holloway fans? Don't get that popcorn during the opening of the film because you won't get much after that. The "Break Into the Kremlin" Set Piece is amusing in and of itself. Bird's use of technology in this set piece shows you we're into 2011 and beyond. This set piece lays the foundation to kick start the film into better territory as it moves onto the more impressive action scenes to come. The DUBAI Action Set Pieces will easily be the most talked about. IMAX is used wonderfully throughout the entire film, but IMAX easily shines the most in Dubai. Outside of the amusing Cruise/Spider-Man Shenanigans, the interior hall of mirrors hijinks within the hotel prove all the more kooky as the M: I Team is going after Nuclear Lanch Codes (the basis of the entire plot, kids!). Not a Cruise fan much anymore, Cruise proves efficiently solid throughout the film. I expected Renner to be handed the franchise earlier in the film, but, alas, it IS pretty much the Ethan Hunt and Company show throughout. Cartoonish action and unbelievable stunts ARE, of course, the centerpieceS of any M: I film, but this fourth film raises the bar for the series and proves to be (surprisingly) well worth an IMAX Ticket Price. I also highly commend the fact that when the main bad guy dies in this film, he DIES and you witness it. Not trying to go Faces of Death on anyone, but most know that the bad guy in action films usually takes the pussy way out in terms of what is shown. Here, you get a head and body bouncing down onto a car and down into the pavement. Bounce splatter SPLAT. For those who miss Ving Rhames, he pops up at the very end for a beer to exclaim he'll return in M: I 5 if you decide to drop some coin on this one. Ghost Protocol is a fanciful fuck of escapism worth journeying to if you can stomach Cruise and cartoonish fun action at the movies. It entertained the hell out of me and gave more than I had expected. B+
-
Abrams could had just been the toilet janitor, it would already poisoned the movie for me. But the big factor is that it's a Tom cruise movie, and after fucking MI3 i vowed never to watch one of his movies ever again. specially if he starts in them. VALKIRIE was an exception but i watched it because it is a Bryan Singer movie and the subject matter is aces.

One of the things i find the most irritatign about the Mission Cruise Impossible franchise is that only Cruise gets to spectacular stunts.
by AsimovLives
What an incredible egocentric bullshit thing! One of the things i most loved about INCEPTION is that the two most spectacular action pieces were not given to the movie's star Leonardo DeCaprio's character, but to two of the supporting characters, the revolving corridor fight for Joseph Gordon-Lewitt and the snow gunfight battle for Tom Hardy. Where DeCpario the egomniac queen that Tom cruise is, he would demand to have those two scenes given to him, while the rest of the cast would be seated on their asses watching him. This is the thingthat truly pisses me off about tom cruise's mission Impossible movies: all the cool action stuff is his and his only. The rest of the cast just seats ontheir asses admiring Tom Cruise's awesomeness. Bullshit!! Fucking bulshit! This prima-donna egomaniac bulslhit makes me furious! would hurt too much to tom cruyise, who's also the movies producer, to allow his cas tto shine as well? Instead of the meager crumbs they get? A fucking disgrace. After enduring that shit for three movies, i'm done with Tom Cruise. Defiantly. This far no futher. No more!

The best M:I movie? Easy: The first one directed by Brian De Palma. By a wide margin.
by AsimovLives
Brian De Palma is such a badass director he can overcome the negative Tom Cruise effect and actually make the movie watchable. Despite Tom Cruise being in it. The rest of the cast also helps.
-
You call generalization, i call majority. Broad majority. Overwelming majority. If you don't think you belong to that majority, then you are not. I can't namethem all because it's too many to do and there' is so little time... and pacience.
-
Be they CGI cartoon or live action, HE WAS THE MAN FOR THE JOB. And he has connections to Spielberg, started with his animation episode for AMAZING STORIES. Why oh why Spieberg didn't gave Brad Bird the gig for the Transformers movies is a mystery for the ages. But what a bad call that was. Crime of omission indeed.
-
Fuck how i hate that modern CGi bulslhit of making heavy objects liek cars in this movie and tanks in Trashfuckmers 1 (another shit movie beloved by AICN and the geekry) bouncing on the ground after landing as of they are bade of some super-jumpy rubber. It's oen thingto bend physics a bit for the sake of a cool stunt, but it's another to go full retard. And as Tropic Thunder teached us, it's wrong to go full retard.
