Bane Inflicts Damage In New Teaser Poster For THE DARK KNIGHT RISES!

Beaks here...

At the end of the first teaser for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, we saw Bane closing in on a seemingly winded/injured Batman. This prompted folks to speculate as to whether the caped crusader might catch a serious beating in Nolan's fim. Well...

... this clears things up a little. (It is EMBIGGENABLE!)

It also matches up with a shot from the montage at the end of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES prologue, which you must see projected in IMAX 15 perf 65/70mm film this Friday - provided it's showing at an IMAX theater near you. In case you're wondering, here's the current list of participating theaters.

  • The prospects of this final film being bleak as all fuck are looking stronger and stronger. Nolan's Bat-films have been some strong morality plays, and "The Dark Knight" already spent a good amount of its runtime battering the viewer and letting the 'bad guys' succeed. I'd get a weird, gleeful joy out of Nolan hammering that nail down and just fucking Batman and Gotham's world into oblivion in 'TDKR.'

Skinny/Short Bane' is the new 'Joker Wears Make-up

    by Kammich

Circa 2007, most of the internet was in flames over the fact that Nolan's Joker was just going to wear self-applied makeup. A year later, when the film was released, we all realized what a trivial, infinitesimal little bit of nonsense it was to get upset over the origins of his makeup. Instead, most of us were just captivated by Ledger's performance and the way Nolan and co. utilized the character. I get a strong sense that Bane will be the same. Too short, too skinny, cockney accent, white-washed, whatever... 10 minutes into the film, we're all going to forget those trivial bits and be swept away by the reinvisioned character put forth by Hardy and Nolan.

    Serious Response, Possible Spoiler

    by sewer_mask

After this scene, it is rumored that Batman aka Bruce Wayne has his back broken. Because Nolan is very into things being as real as possible and he has researched that when you break your back, you immediately lose control of your bowels. So here is how the scene supposedly continues: <Batman laying on the ground, raining hard> <Up drives Alfred Pennywell> Alfred, "Ey, 'atman, is you alright?" Batman, (GRUMBLE VOICE) "Alfred, I can't move." Alfred, "'Aight, let's get you back to the batcave." <Cut to the batcave, Alfred begins to remove Batman's clothes> Alfred "Ah, bloody 'ell, you gone and shat your pants Mr. Wayne." <Bruce again lose controls of his bowel movements> EPIC!

  • Dec. 10, 2011, 4:41 p.m. CST

The film will be certainly dark.....

    by connor187

of course there will be moments during the film when the city of Gotham sinks to the depths of complete desperation, but The Dark Knight will RISE! Trust me, audience members will be fuckin cheering in the end! Nolan understands what Batman stands for..........I just hope there's a shot of Batman standing on top of a fuck off skyscraper at the end with his cape billowing in the wind, that elusive Batman theme Hans Zimmer has been talking about/teasing us with over the last 8 years pounding our ears also! The end!

Too much clutter around the batmask hinders its impact. I know what they were going for with Bane but it just comes off as bad quality, especially with the snow more prominent around him. by Mr. Nice Gaius

I'm still betting on the themes established by Ras in the first film. There will be a "changing of the guard" but the legend of Batman will continue. It's all theatrics...committed to an ideal. Although they don't appear to be pushing the marketing campaign as effectively as they did with the Joker (i.e. Why so serious?), this poster is plenty adequate.

    by KilliK

what the fuck? If the legend dies then how the fuck the Dark Knight rises? Or maybe the legend is referred to Bane and not to Batman? But then again the poster has the broken batman mask so the correlation is between the legend and batman. Or maybe Nolan is going to give us one of his usual twists in this movie and he is using the marketing campaign as a ploy to fool us. Maybe in the end of the movie,Batman doesnt die or get crippled as we expect, but instead he triumphs over evil and his legend lives forever contrary to what the poster says. brain hurts.

Drive an hour or more to see a couple minutes of film. That is flat out moronic. I don't care if your the biggest fucking nerd in history. Even NerdGod would wait for the actual movie.

  • Batman gets seriously injured and while he convalesces JGL John Blake character takes over for Batman...or I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes the successor to Bruce Wayne in the cowl...something akin to the end of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns in the sense that Bruce Wayne stops being Batman, but sets up a network to do it for him. Personally, I think it's a crying shame that Nolan did not introduce Dick Grayson in this film in any way, shape of form. Batman needs Robin and Robin is there to take over when Batman can't do it anymore. Yeah, Nolan didn't get Robin...but he's a smart guy...he could've figured it out.

Moosemalloy- Give it a rest, no one cares how buff or tough you think you are. a theory... the fact that it's snowing in this poster hints that this scene probably happens after the fight between Batman and Bane on the steps in the snow (as seen in leaked footage on you tube) So maybe that fight is relatively early in the film and not the 'big showdown' as first thought??

    Only you Moose, only you.

    by phantomcreeps

So Mooseypoo? Since, you think this movie will be shit and Nolan is a hack. What, pray tell, would a good Batman Movie make? Since, you are an expert on the comics. Let's (AICN Community) shine a pinpoint laserbeam of wondering, into your brain, and see what we extract, shall we? Will we see a brilliant embodiement of a great widescope, detective filled batman adventure? Or will we end up with a belching, air filled turd that flops out of your brain on to the floor and farts out a last gasp of empty air? We all twiddle our fingers, like mad scientists, to see the result.

  • Certainly not 'poorly executed,' whoever said that. I like the snow/rain/sleet. Not 'distracting.' Adds mood. If this thing didn't have the sleet then we'd be hearing it's too 'bare,' because it WOULD BE too bare.

FIGHTER does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

Saw THE FIGHTER last night... and have to say watch out, Bale has still got it maaan! Very good film - far more fun than THE WRESTLER imho. With all the internet attention on Bane - Tom Hardy and Hathaway's Catwoman - just wait... just wait... TDKR will be Bale's movie in a big way. No one is focusing on Bale or even talking about him in the run up... I think he will surprise all of us.

Again, Fuck nolan, but what is your superauthority on Batman and why these movies suck. Better yet, I'll Ask again....Slowly.... Answer to your question: Nolans Batman Films are fun to watch. BATMAN BEGINS has imho one of the greatest casts ever assembled - without doubt the greatest for a comic book movie. Christian Bale Liam Neeson Morgan Freeman Michael Caine Wow... four fanatasic actors - shall we go on? Gary Oldman Tom Wilkinson Ken Watanabe Rutger Hauer Cillian Murphy You know what, even the guy who played Wayne's dad... and the guy who played the bum in the street 'nice coat'.. were pretty incredible too. So I hope that answers your question.

phantom -- whoa, calm down douchebag

    by MooseMalloy

A good Batman movie would pay homage to the comics, offer compelling and crisply done action sequences and a provide a story that instead of insulting the audience takes them along on an enjoyable ride. Nolan's films do none of these. What would make good source material for a Batman movie? The current "Court of Owls" story. Procede to freak out...

The Blount reference just reminded me of the cardinal fucking sin someone committed in my fantasy football league. I'm in two leagues: one with friends and co-workers, and one 'open' league with a bunch of strangers. In the latter, a disgruntled loser with a shitty team waived his ENTIRE roster right in the middle of the playoffs(Blount included). Its a 16-team league, and I've got an injury-riddled team(for fuck's sake, I'm looking at starting Marcel Reese at RB this week), so I could've VERY easily taken the easy way and claimed Blount. Did I? Nope. But my opponent in the playoffs did. Fucking classless, man. Classless. */fantasy football rant* (Its better than the ridiculous flame war, at least.)

Or BATMAN & ROBIN? What about CATWOMAN? Perhaps when it comes to superhero comic book movies you would prefer the non-audience insulting likes of GREEN LANTERN or IRON MAN II? Maybe SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE? But it's Nolan that's dumbing down in your mind? Okay moose. Let's all go watch a double bill of THE FANTASTIC FOUR and XMEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, for a real high brow fix. moosemalloy, you're fucking shaming yourself up my friend, you should quit while you're behind.

Jesus, you people are IMPOSSIBLE to please!!!

    by notcher

I know this is AICN and part of that means everything gets hated on big time, but what the fuck? I think this poster is pretty badass, in fact, it's better than a lot of the posters in the whole damn series! But gosh, the day most of the people on this site actually like something will be a day to remember. In fact, the last time I saw a unanimous reaction to anything was when the first Dark Knight TRAILER came out and everyone was shitting their pants. I miss those days. Cue the, "And the Dark Knight turned out to be shitty, yeah fuck Nolan! Bring back Burton and DeVito for another Batman movie that's worth a shit!" Oh, and trust me, if Tom Hardy walked up to any of you fucking fanboys with the goal of kicking your ass, you'd all shit yourselves! As with a lot of things, you guys don't understand anything except what you read in a comic book. If Bane were just massive, that doesn't make him more lethal. It would make him slow, and fucking boring. I'd rather see a smaller ripped guy with quickness, much more lethal! Watch Hardy in "Warrior" and tell me he isn't intimidating. If you think this film was shot in a way that Bane will look like a Hobbit, then you guys are even more retarded than I thought. Fuck it, I'm talking to a bunch of brick walls! NOLAN, keep doing what you're doing!!!

  • Dec. 10, 2011, 6:38 p.m. CST

    Still waiting for your too.

    by phantomcreeps

My god it is so tense, who will break first. OK I will. 1-Visually fucking stunning. Sure makes or breaks a movie for me. Would I rather see Phantom Batman with Glowing flame Eyes or Neon fucker with iceskates? 2-Characters. Gary oldman/Gordon-Nailed it Cillian Murphy/Scarecrow-Nailed it Ledger/Joker-Nailed it Freeman, Eckhart, Bale, you get the picture. 3-Story. I don't give two turds what people think. Begins and Dark knight have brilliant intertwined stories that flesh out all of the characters. Rises will be no different. 4-Action. Again some people say Nolan can't direct action sequences. I say Bull shit. The rooftop sequence, Burning of Rha's al Ghuls temple, City going bugnuts and monorail sequence, Opening robbery of Knight, Batpod ejection and Semi-truck turnover, shit I even like the end with the sonar. Not too much for me to complain about. 5-They are fucking great. Want some specifics? By the way, I like Batmans Voice. What do you want it to sound like, a dubbed kung fu flick? Your turn. What suck about the movies and Memento?

Wow Bane is going to rock...

    by Andrew Coleman

What I love about these "he's too small" comments is that they are made by guys who never have stepped into a gym. I'm sorry have you seen Tom Hardy? Watch Warrior... He probably on his own could beat everyone of us to death if we all went after him. The line "The Legend Ends" is over Bane because that's what he believes. That is his obvious goal. From what we've seen, Bane is bringing the destruction of Gotham and defeating Batman is part of it. So the line is over him. "The Dark Knight Rises" is under the mask because... GASP... Batman will fight back.

    Moose and Phantom

    by Castor Grayson

To add to its proof of greatness: Name me another Hollywood blockbuster film with the amount of character fleshed out to the depth they are here. One in particular thing that I loved was how The Joker totally screwed up Bruce's way of thinking. He was taught by Ra's that criminals are uncomplicated. Joker proves him wrong, he can't figure him out and he LOSES. Batman LOSES in Dark Knight. He ends up killing Harvey Dent and Joker (while getting caught) wins! Give me one...ONE... Summer Hollywood film that takes character risks like this.

    by notcher

first of all, Batman can rise and end in the same movie, and he will, it's obvious. Second, people don't give a fuck about the title. Nolan could've named the last one "Year of the Bat and the Clown" and it still would've crushed everything. The trailers are what draws an audience in, so the jury is still out on that one. And we're talking about non-Batman fans, cuz everyone on this site accept for moosman apparently is gonna have their asses in theaters to watch this whether they say they are or not. The other audience types who are more "huh?" they'll decide based on what they see in the trailer. Third, Nolan is smarter than everyone on this site, he doesn't slap together a title for no reason, when the movie ends, the title will resonate a lot more.

That's the reason it's only playing in so few cities. The prologue is only playing on the few IMAX screens left that are actually running film. now that being said let me rant...

    by Norman Colson

I've been m.i.a. been busy with my job and pussy and all... but guys come on, nolan has given us the definitive batman... Yes i know that many would say oh keaton was better, yeah yeah yeah, we know... But i mean for our time, and our generation. We needed a batman movie that didnt suck... WE GOT IT! why is everyone looking a gift horse in the mouth. Yes there are certain things that nag at me as a filmgoer, like why does the cowl restrict batman's neck, WTF hello batman is a trained martial arts master, this guy can probably sense you if you ever snuck up on him. So looking behind for him is Also Since when does he needs to look back while parallel parking, wtf the tumbler doesnt need to parallel park remember the rooftop in batman begins... lol. Yes the voice work can be better, hopefully bale makes it menacing without the gravelly growling. He can get his point across by talking low, i mean he's the goddamn batman! He doesnt need to talk at all if he chooses not to!!! As a fan of films i know everyone HERE loved batman begins, and LOVED the dark knight... The thing i also keep hearing is that nolan doesnt focus on stories from the comics, WTF his brother jonothan probably reads nothing but comics. every movie that came out has had a touch of something, like batman year one for begins, and touches of the long halloween and killing joke for the dark knight... Nolan knows how much he has riding on this last film... He knows how much it would mean to end this movie with a masterpiece of filmaking. But all in all, the movie is not done and completed yet. If it sucks, it sucks, but if it doesnt then what, what would happen if it eclipses the dark knight and batman begins in storytelling nature giving us the ultimate batman story since the arkham city video game?!? then what? I rest my case, judge it when it comes out next summer... 1. P.S. moose: get a life...

    by Darth_Tarantino

He says; "I grew up reading and collecting comics, so I'm not some new-geek asshole who thinks this shit is gold." Well I'm 28 years old and I would have been around 8 years old when I first started reading Batman comics. To date, I have seen every movie version of Batman and I genuinely believe Nolan's movies to be the best of the bunch. Burton's films don't get a pass from me because they feature Batman killing people (something fans of the comics should know is an instant fail when it comes to understanding the character). I feel I don't even need to explain why Schumacher's Batman films fail. So what exactly is Moose's point? I've read Batman comics for 20 years and think Nolan's movies are the best, but this somehow makes me (and everyone else in the same position) "new-geek assholes"? If you get chance, Moose, please could you clarify because right now your comments don't make a lick of sense. Oh...and I quite like the poster, though it could have done with less rain washing out the details.

    Tagline should read: Nolan Quits

    by Drath

The decision to reboot the franchise after this movie has killed my interest. There's no on-going series, no opportunity to see all of the Batverse through this lens--I don't like rebooting and I'm not happy they're actually PLANNING on doing it now before the last movie is even out. All this makes me sure of is this movie will RUIN the idea of an on-going franchise and will probably kill off a fair number of key players like Gordon or Alfred or Fox and probably use those deaths to make it look like Batman himself will die. Yawn. I hope we some day get to Death in the Family and other plots that involve Grayson and Batgirl and Tim Drake and Nightwing and NOT in a way that sucks. And I wish the people who hate those characters were dropped in a river. Maybe that includes Nolan considering his comments, certainly does a lot of the fans who think he's God. Whatever. One way or another, I feel like this is Return of the Jedi or Search for Spock. We peaked with second movie, and even if the third is pretty good, they're cutting off their nose despite their face by treating it like the end.

  • He became a thing of legend in his absence. Then Bane arrives and starts some shit. Batman returns (rises) He still could die though, but the title on the poster isn't in red to that.

Harry, are you seriously NOT posting an Obit for Jerry Robinson?

    by Jeff Myers

Harry, are you seriously NOT posting an Obit for Jerry Robinson? You may have noticed that died on Wednesday, the 9th of December 2011 at the age 89. What would the Batman mythology be without The Joker, Alfred, Robin or Two Face? Despite Bob Kane's arguments over who-created-what - particularly with regard to The Joker, Robinson was an integral part of the creative team. Kane hired him in 1939 after he saw Robinson's artistic skills - check out Robinson's covers during the 'Golden Age'. He only lasted with Kane until the 1940's On the subject of Kane's veracity - I'd challenge anyone to read his officially sanctioned Biography and not conclude that he was a latter day Baron Munchausen, cursed with the gift of extreme exaggeration and embellishment. And I say this as a life-long Batman geek. Later, In the 50s, Robinson drew comic strips for the Broadway magazine 'Playbill'. And, much later in life, taught at New York's School of Visual Arts. He was also President of the National Cartoonists Society and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. He also championed comic book art as a serious form. "Jerry brought a realism to comics and a sense of humour," said Charles Kochman then editor at Abrams Comic Arts, Mike Marts, editor at DC Comics, called him "a pioneer in storytelling". Please, at least, make some mention. Mr Jinx

Guess what dipshit, they make movies for the masses to see not just you. You want to see a batman movie based on (Simpsons Comic Book Guy Voice) " Episode 17 of the 14th series named "Bats Up Yer Ass" then crawl out of your flea bitten recliner of sorrow and write and make it yourself. Cuz the general public doesn't give a shit about that. Film makers want their films to be seen (and when a studio forks over $200 million they kinda want people to see it too). Your theories are poor, your reasoning lacking. Apparently, you have this convoluted idea that only "you" know what makes a good movie . True fan here...

    by Aaron

I have always had a love / hate relationship with the Nolan series. There is a lot of good stuff and a lot of bad stuff in the first two flicks. Being a comicbook reader first, I like my Batman a certain way, and Nolan's treatment was a little too Bond for me (dude is going to make a Bond movie, mark my words). This poster, though... Is fucking awesome. In itself, it is a great. Whether he lives, dies, is broken, whatever; good fucking poster. Since the Nolan films exist whether I want them to or not, I have softened my dislike for them. This one I am really excited about. The Knightfall storyline was always rather weak to me, and I look forward to seeing Nolan justify Bane's existence. Perhaps the themes revolve around what happens when someone takes the escalation of TDK and really puts the screws in. The Joker was indeed a terrorist, but a domestic one. What if Bane represents what happens when a REAL terrorist comes packing serious heat, or acquires a nuke, and starts making serious threats? If Bane is some kind of operative, with training from either Ra's or the feds, with trained men at his disposal, whether they be ninjas or CIA guys, then Bats is going to have a hell of a time. Joker's guys were all clowns, pawns set up to fall into place; I propose that Batman will be up against a guy who is just as good as him, at least physically. Of course, I could just be getting sweeped up in the hype, because I think a lot of the 'themes' in both movies were Monday morning quarterback-types of shit thought up by rabid fans with a lot of time on their hands. Still, none of that changes the simple !!!FACT!!! that the above poster is very, very cool, and very Batman.

An apple box and a pancake are boxes made out of wood that can be used for many purposes when filming. They are part of the Grip Departments equipment. Actors can stand on them or you can place a camera on them. They are essentially multi-purpose utility boxes. They always come in handy especially when you need one to sit on. If a Grip is pissed at you he may kick the box out from underneath you when you are sitting on it so be careful.

Classy. Listen, I've read Knight fall. I get it. Bane's superpower is to break Batman's back one time then get his ass handed to him every time they meet after that. Batman has been beginning for 2 films now. (He barely won in the last one, if you even count that as a victory.) I want to see the unstoppable prepared for anything Batman that he is in the comics, and so far, it doesn't seem like that is what we are getting here. I hope I'm wrong. I hope this movie kicks ass.

Yeah I think they're definitely going to enhance the size of Bane somehow. Some of the set footage was understandably worrisome to people because Bane wasn't standing on anything, Batman is clearly taller than him from the perspective of the video. But a guy that saw the prologue mentioned how Bane looks very large, so they're probably using camera tricks and what-not.

You just want to scoop him up, stick him in your pocket, and take him to a burger joint so you can watch him eat 1 french fry because to him that's like, 5 feet and 12 pounds worth of deep fried potato. Then you need to hold him in your hand & rub his belly because he gets all full and sleepy after such a big meal.

Bane looks small because he's further away from the viewer and the mask is really, really, really up close to the viewer. Don't you remember when Grover would say "NEAR" and would get right up on the camera and look large? Then he would say "FAR" as he walked away from the camera and grew smaller?

Casting does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

tallandagwood, I totally agree that SUPERMAN THE MOVIE had a truly excellent cast and that was the film I compared BATMAN BEGINS cast to in my mind when I made that statement (not BB contemporary peer SUPERMAN RETURNS which had a rather weaker cast shall we say...) Big name actors from the sixties and seventies versus big name actors from today is a hard argument to make either way, and of course Brando is hard to beat as a cast member. However I think the sheer number of great actors in BB (many of them recent oscar winners)... Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Wilkinson, Liam Neeson, Christian Bale... just about edges out the cast of SUPERMAN in my mind. But it's a damn close call. I also notice that I never mentioned Katie Holmes and you never mentioned Margot Kidder!

"better" was basically your moronic response... if you dont appreciate nolans batman, or moreso his other films, and are willing to classify them as bad, then you are, truly and succinctly, a moron ... but most could have told you that already given that you are bashing a series of movies you freely admit you havent even seen all the way through... and PS you only make yourself look MORE stupid when you insult memento.

winona_ryders, TDK added to the ensemble cast with Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhall, Aaron Echkart and Eric Roberts. But it lost Liam Neeson, Rutger Hauer, Tom Wilkinson, Katie Holmes, Ken Watanabe, The 'nice coat' bum, and the silver-haired genteel old duffer that says 'Mr Wayne, the apple has fallen very far from the tree'. So on balance I would maintain BATMAN BEGINS has the stronger cast.

Maybe he will kill him, maybe he won't but either way at some point in the film Bane will give Batman the mother of all hidings! Absolutely loving this poster, it kind of reminds me of of one of those dramatic comic book covers from the 80's that demanded you buy the comic, seriously impressive stuff!

    TDKR Mega Spoiler!!!!

    by onezeroone

Bane becomes the Bat! Well, not really, but won't be too surprised if that happens. As others have pointed out, Bane can best be described as "third world Batman". He is equal of Batman in every sense, except for financial resources at his disposal and that is where League and Ra's can come in.

  • Then you'd have to count RotS also, yeah?

    by ratfarts

This one will be very good...probably not great. I still think Begins was better than TDK. I'm curious what WB does next with Batman. I'd love to see what somebody like del Toro could do. I just don't want to see anything close to Schumacher's version...unwatchable IMO.

What did people do back in the time before they could go online and start nonsense fights on movie news site message boards for no good reason other than to get attention and giggle to themselves alone at home? Did they just play with Legos and re-read old comics as the years crawled by and they aged... slowly living up to their destiny of being that one silent old man staring at the television all day in the nursing home, with no one around to speak to or care? If that's so, well, thank god they now have AICN to turn to for speaking nonsense about movies they haven't seen for no other reason than that by being vaguely irritating they feel someone out in the world has noticed that they exist.

    by Autodidact

What a stupid tagline. Legends don't end. A legend is not a story or a progression. It's the product of a story, the result of a progression. Legends don't "end" they eventually fade from collective memory (or they become part of the culture's mythology).

  • Dec. 11, 2011, 8:22 a.m. CST

He's not going to kill him

    by Autodidact

Bane will proably break Batman's back. If it happens in the prologue, leaving Gotham to fall into the League Of Shadows' grip in Batman's absence, that will be intriguing. I just hope there's not really an eight year gap. That's not even plausible given that TDK Batman is about 35... what he finally "RISES" when he's 43? I'm really hoping the eight years thing is more like eight months.

    by Autodidact

I thought TDK touched on that... nobody can be Batman except Bruce Wayne. I always disliked the ending of The Dark Knight Returns where Batman sets up a bunch of gang members as his private army. Way off-character if you ask me... and just plain stupid... Gotham would burn to ashes within a week. When Batman's career is over that should be the end of Batman. The concept of passing down the "mantle of the Bat" is just wrong.

"that image looks great but we need to have tons of blurry shit swirling around in front of it". This applies to most high-end visuals like movie posters and graphics for AAA video games. Just an observation. I'm not against it.

    The title Dark Knight Rises.....

    by Katet19

...coupled with the tag line "The Legend Ends" and the apparent destruction of Batman is a mind fuck. He'll get taken out of the game early in the film, recover and become the opposite of what he made himself out to be at the end of the dark knight. He'll reveal himself to the world and cease to be an urban legend and be a prominent "super hero" of sorts. We've seen photos of him essentially leading an army of cops against the League of Shadows. The People of Gotham ill Know for a fact that they have a gravely voiced high tech defender. They and the larger world will probably bear witness to his heroic feats, as it seems that Bane aims to make this a very public city wide fight.

    @ cobra--kai Re: cast

    by TallanDagwood

Thank you for the reply, and I quite agree that separating the talent between Superman and Batman Begins is an exercise in subjective conjecture that can never be fully answered. My take, is that outside of Brando, the casts are dead even. They both boast multiple academy award winners as well as multiple academy award nominees and assorted British award winners. Freeman and Caine are the equal of Hackman and Howard. Oldman and Wilkinson are the equal of Stamp and Ford. Neeson and Bale are the equal of Beatty and York. No one comes even close to Brando though, and to my mind, that tips the scales. Still, regardless which side we come down on, it is the audience of both movies who are treated to such a stellar assemblage of talent. Yes, I did purposely omit Holmes and Kidder!

    poor nolan

by The Duke of New York

right, i'm sure he has absolutly no hand in the marketing of a franchise he made tons of money on. i'm sure WB couldn't care less about any input he may have. or if he came back any sequels after delivered for them (on every level) with the dark knight and inception. speaking of TDK and inception, didn't WB put out about 25 posters for each of those movies, just because nolan thought all the concepts looked good? i'm sure we'll have the same over-saturated approach with the marketing of this movie. or do you think that nolan is just given tens of millions of dollars, huge crews, the latest expensive gear and access to locations all over the world to indulge himself in a production, yet somehow manages to operate in a bubble where he insn't involved and responsable in a corporate partner type of bussiness arrangement? maybe you're getting him confised with Terry Gilliam? use your brain.

He became a movement, a mythology with a huge following, ready to 'spread the word' as it were. Plus it acknowledged the Batman was looking at the bigger picture. " And I have learned there is more wrong with the world than crime". He had saved Gotham, he was setting his sights on saving the whole world, and he needed an army to do it.

Is TDKRises going to use aspects of NO MAN'S LAND?

    by Autodidact

No Man's Land was the last comics event apart from Civil War that I actually paid attention to. Gotham had a terrible earthquake and was then walled off from the rest of America. This gave it an Arkham City vibe, as there were enclaves belonging to each of the major villains. It really worked as a temporary shift in the rules and settings of the in-continuity Batman comics. Anyhow, some of the shots from TDKRises show what looks like earthquake damage to the sports stadium where Bane rolls in with Tumblers. I think that could be an interesting twist.. if there is some natural disaster, perhaps caused by the League of Shadows, that creates more chaos for Bane to thrive in.

  • Dec. 11, 2011, 10:23 a.m. CST

Maybe he "breaks" him in the opening...

    by BizarroJerry

That opening scene they're showing where people aren't allowed to talk about in detail? The opening is probably Bane fighting Batman and breaking his back. From what we've heard the opening takes place just after the last movie. So, Bane breaks Batman's back in that first scene, then we get: Eight years later. Bruce has slowly recovered from his injury and hasn't been Batman since. Returns to a Gotham City that's an even worse hell hole then before. Gordan gets sick or injured fighting the bad guys, Bruce is inspired to be Batman again, etc. Oh and some chick in a cat suit shows up at some point.

    Some proper dickheads in here

    by Adam Moore

"it can't be rises AND ends blah blah". Of course it can. How about if Bane breaks Bat's back towards the start of the film. Then Bruce spends the next 8 years putting his body back together, watching as Bane and co take Gotham apart? Throughout the movie, Bruce builds alliances throughout Gotham until the endgame, which we've seen, with thousands of extra's battling for Gotham. The end of the legend is when Batman doesn't have to fight anymore. Gotham rises and takes charge of its own destiny, never again fearing the criminals, thanks to the courage that Batman taught the city?

The shots of Bane's tumblers patrolling the streets do also.

    unstoppable Batman is boring

    by NotEnoughBiehn

It's just an adolescent power fantasy of the writers and readers who were picked on as kids (probably adults too), and writers who are so infatuated with the characters they have to make him the ultimate. Being the World's Greatest Detective was enough, and his most interesting "power" along with Wealth. I don't need this "3rd greatest martial artist in the DC universe!" bullshit, which should mean exactly zero in the situations the characters encounter. I throw bullshit like "he can beat anyone if he has enough time to plan," in with the wish fulfillment. It renders the character a gimmick when they can just pull that line out to justify him taking on super villains, again, because they are in love with the character they are writing.

  • Just saying.

  • The idea was for them to fear him, and to think of him as some sort of nightmarish 6 foot bat - legend spreads fast. Just look at Chuck Norris. ;) Much of Batman's impact in Gotham is derived from this public image - few people are supposed to have seen him, those who do soon after are rendered unconscious and when they tell their story, it is of a "giant bat crossed with a man". Superstitious cowardly lot, indeed. If/when Bane "breaks" the Bat, and if this teaser is any indication, rips off his mask, then it will be seen that even nightmares can bleed and be proven mortal men. Can't believe people take it so literally. Come on, most of us have probably taken some writing/literature courses in college and know what a metaphore is. Hell, most 6th graders would. Obviously they aren't going to kill off the m'f'ing BATMAN in a movie entitled "The Dark Knight Rises". They might well have Bane beat him and break his back, but that will be before the big Rocky montage where he makes the comeback after months of physical therapy and a back brace XD....or something to that effect. Speaking of thing that has been bugging me: where is he getting his Venom from? I see no tubes... at any rate, if this is the biggest he gets, then fine - I'm assuming Nolan is just going to endow him with immense strength and stamina while on Venom, and not go the route that makes no sense from a physics standpoint (much more so than him gaining strength from some super-steroid)...which is the mass he gains instantly when pumped full of venom. That works well in a comic book, but Nolan takes himself serioiusly and treats Batman as more of a crime-drama than a superhero film, so perhaps unsurprising. Yeah, I would have at least liked to have Bane be much bigger than Bats - on the order of 6'6" or so - but we have what we have now, soooo....might as well make our peace with it because we aren't going to see a live action Bane again for 10 years or so, when someone does yet another reboot.

THAT'S how she fits in with the picture: Bruce gets hurt by Bane, then she becomes a sort of Robin character, then at the end of the film SHE becomes the "Dark Knight" that "Rises". Please God, make me wrong.

Nolan's Batman is a pussy.Sorry but that's the real truth.

    by KilliK

We have already two movies where Batman hasnt showed yet how much of a badass crime fighter he really is. I understand that BB was the origin story so it was natural to see Batman in his first steps as vigilante,to be completely inexperienced and unprepared despite his training and his skills.Luscious,Gordon and Alfred did save his ass a couple of times but that was to be expected. When TDK starts, we learn that one year has passed and Batman has succeeded in becoming a name that the criminals in GC fear.We would assume that Batman achieved what Wayne wanted from the start: to help GC get rid of crime, corruption, injustice and lawlessness and become a better, safer place for its citizens. BUT the setup of the movie itself, tells us a quite different story: Not only the crime in GC is at its peak but the corruption is found everywhere even in the state institutions like the Police and the Justice Department. The citizens of GC are so much afraid of this dire situation that they stay inside their houses.GC's streets are literally empty if you have noticed in the movie. Moreover the citizens have put their hopes for the salvation of their city,to an incorruptible district attorney whom they even describe as the White Knight. In other words,it doesnt seem that mr Batman does a very good job in protecting his beloved city from the criminals, now does he? But it is not only that.Even as a crime fighter,he doesnt seem to have gain a lot of experience and refine his skills after his last misadventures in BB. Most notable examples: 1.He gets his ass almost kicked from a herd of dogs.twice!! 2.For a guy who has supposedly studied everything about warfare, strategy, tactics, stealth, combat, espionage, etc he surely depends a lot on the help of his company's employees. Not knowing how to create an antidote for a lethal toxin is one thing, but not knowing how to kidnap someone from a skyscraper when tall buildings are your battleground, your hideout and your way of transportation in your crime fighting mission,is another. 3.While Batman is clueless on how to kidnap someone from a skyscraper,he surely knows how to kidnap someone from a crowded nightclub: He confronts him directly. The problem with that is that you put in danger the lives of the innocent bystanders who are dancing in the club and also the confined space restricts your melee attacks thus putting you in danger. Batman is practically a ninja with stealth being his main combat technique.Instead of storming into the nightclub,it would have been more logical, easier and safer for a ninja to do the following: since he is in a hurry,he uses a diversion to force the mafia boss to leave the club,he follows him and in the right time and place he ambushes his bodyguards, knocks them down and kidnaps the boss. He could easily do that in the parking lot in the club, when the boss comes out to get to the car. And another thing: In the movie, how the fuck Batman took the mafia boss away from the club? did he threaten him with his harsh voice since he doesnt use guns? did he carried him away in his hug? Was the mafia boss that fucking stupid to voluntarily follow outside a guy with lethal fighting skills who is dressed like a bat? It doesnt make any sense.

    PART 2

    by KilliK

4.Batman doesnt seem very good in hiding his secret identity.Let's say that his girlfriend learned about him because well he was his man can hide a secret from a woman so that's ok.It is also fine that his most trusted employee in his company, learned about his identity. When you supply to your boss a tank which destroys half the city, antidotes for dangerous toxins and plans on how to kidnap someone from a skyscraper, well it is not that hard to line the it is inevitable. But then your company's account learns about your secret too.your accountant for fuck's sake.and not only he learns your secret identity but he tries to blackmail you.but he doesnt stop there,he tries to expose your secret to the whole world.i guess Alfred's idea to buy 10000 cowl pieces from Asia in order to avoid suspicion, didnt help that much.. 5.For the second time,Batman obliterates half of GC while trying to catch Joker. But this time it is even worse. His batpod is equipped with guns which he uses to open space while driving by destroying everything in front of his path.Even cars which we dont know if they were parked or just waiting in a traffic jam.I wonder if Wayne Industries compensated afterwards, for the damages that Batman caused in the city... 6.Batman spends millions of dollars on a technology which gives him the ability to spy on the millions citizens of GC.He uses the technology only one time and then he immediately destroys it because he already changed his mind.Talk about effective management of resources for the purpose of crime least he got Joker.

  • Dec. 11, 2011, 6:07 p.m. CST

    PART 3

    by KilliK

7.Shoehorning a confusing forensic scene which was ripped off a CSI episode, does not make your hero the 'greatest detective in the world'. 8.The ultimate fuckup. A lunatic who came from nowhere, is always one step ahead from the general/ninja trained Batman.Batman, the smart guy he is,devises a plan with Gordon to catch Joker. At first the plan seemed that it was a success although half of GC was destroyed and a couple of cops, who probably didnt know anything about the plan, were killed. But then Joker proves once again that he is way ahead of his game.He anticipated Batman's trap and contrary to Batman he came prepared for it: Not only he escapes from prison, but he burns Dent's face who eventually becomes crazy,he kills Batman's girlfriend while tricking hm to save Dent instead of her,he destroys a hospital and hold hundreds of people as hostages whom he uses for his twisted social experiment and then he indirectly forces Batman to take the blame for the cops that the crazy Dent killed.and all that in a period of two days.ouch. Now in TDKR,not only the things havent changed for dear, old Batsie but instead they look even worse.Judging by the ad campaing and by the leaked info about the movie,it is pretty evident that Batman once again will be the bitch of the main villain. We already know that Bane turns GC into chaos and ruins, almost kills Gordon, steals Batman's weaponry and beats him severely, perhaps he even breaks his back. In other words ,Batman is still the weak, unprepared, inexperienced, unskilled, stupid, whinny, sissified crime-fighter and not the cool badass motherfucker who is prepared and ready for everything, knows how to handle situations, knows how to overcome his opponents no matter how powerful and smart they are,he is a detective,a ninja,a figther,he uses stealth,he uses an utility belt,he doesnt whine for everything and he is not fucking scared of some hungry dog FFS.

Batman is awesome...or else it wouldn't have lasted so long...go from Adam West's 60's Batman to now...Batman is badass. Criminals DO fear Batman...Joker says "what did your balls drop off" to the entirety of the Mafia, the drug dealer at the beginning is even too afraid to complete the drug buy. He friggin goes to a different country and hauls the asian back and leaves him with a sign saying "deliver to Gordon"... idk...finding all the negatives of these movies is pointless...reading all of them was probably a bigger waste of my time. And the 1st movie he kicks tons of ass

    Bane's size is irrelevant

    by Relugus

If he looked like he did in the comics, it would just be ridiculous and audiences would view him as a special effect rather than a character. Nolan wanted a good actor to play Bane. Good actors tend not to be huge musclemen. Arguably a smaller Bane works better, as it shows his threat to Batman is based on much more than brute strength. With Bane its more about the intent than the appearance.

    IF they kill off Batman

    by CimmerianWarrior

the movie will tank. The last time I saw a main character killed off in an american made movieit was the third Matrix movie. That movie absolutely tanked. No one wants to see the hero killed. That works in Chinese martial arts epics, but it won't work in the US. I absolutely can't believe they would even consider such a thing. Five minutes of an ending will kill the other 115 minutes. Big big mistake. No offense to anyone. Just my opinion.

The Batman must come back." "What if he doesn't exist anymore?

    by Nick Michalak

From Gordon's dialogue in the teaser trailer, it sounds like something happens that forces the Batman to vanish. Even Bruce doesn't know if Batman still exists within him. Something must break his spirit in the face of something terrible. He must rise back up from defeat to be the hero Gotham needs him to be. The theme of this film is definitely redemption. I seee it in everything that has lead up to it, and what little we've seen from it. I am certainly more interested in the new trailer than this prologue. I need more plot fleshed out to get a handle on how it's all coming together.

I'm sorry - I just can't get excited about the Nolan Bat-Films. I've not seen Bale in anything I've like since American Psycho, I think the grittiness feels contrived and the subdued palate of the cinematography leaves me cold. Endless reboots bore me silly too. As I've said before the only Batman films that I've enjoyed are the first two with Keaton. Odd in itself as I don't rate Tim Burton either. The only Batman flick that would draw me to the big screen would be an adaption of "Dark Knight Returns," with Stephen Lang as the older Bats/Wayne, a photorealistic CGI Joker (ala Avatar) voiced by Mark Hamill and the art direction (not palate!) of "Sin City" (which along with Watchmen) actually felt like a comic book movie... Just my tuppence...

    The Legend Ends

    by kesoze4

Bane takes over where Dent left off. He gets the city's passion going. Uses nefarious means. Batman confonts him. Bane crushes him, cripples him, unmasks him. "The Legend Ends". Eight years pass. Bane grows in power, corruption. A need for a new Batman arises to stop him. JGL puts on the Batsuit, supported by Ra's Al Ghul and the League of Shadows. JGL wins, becomes Azrael. Starts terrifying city. Bruce Wayne has to come back as Batman once more to stop him. The Dark Knight rises. This time does it with mask off. City cheers. TDK inspires city. Crime obliterated. End of saga. How is this in any way confusing?

The movie's called The Dark Knight RISES yet the tag line is The Legend ENDS... So what is it? Is he rising or ending??? I'm hing they don't kill him. Even with how good Nolan's 2 bat films have been so far I don't think that gives him the right to kill the Batman just because this is the end of his run. It would just seem like a weak way for him to bow out to me. I'm hoping that by the end of the film Batman knows his place and what he needs to be and becomes THE Batman. After all, he was still a rookie in the first 2 films and with this one being set 8 years after the last film, you can't just skip all that time and bam! He's dead. I for one will walk out bitterly disappointed if he dies, no matter how good the movie is.

Love Burton so much, but I really dislike a LOT of Batman Returns. I might have only seen it twice (once in theatres and once on DVD circa 2002). Just the treatment of the Batmobile in Returns was totally offensive. There's also a scene where Batman playfully "scratches" on a CD somehow, and then smiles. Batman Forever is a guilty pleasure. Returns is kinda depressing

    by Autodidact

Batman Forever has some issues, I know. But it's fun and has a lot of cool imagery. I also love the colour pallete aside from TLJ's makeup. Returns has about the same number of issues but I don't find it much fun to watch. It's sad and ugly and Penguin grosses me out with his trickle of black bile and his stained asscrack. Returns also ends on a major downer. Forever is just more enjoyable to watch... if I were ranking the faithfulness to what's good about Batman, I'd probably put Returns above Forever.

Prediction: Batman shoots Bane in the F'in head.

    by JFRA

Just like he does to Joker in The Dark Knight Returns. The Legend Ends: Batman as a symbolic figure is no more, his reputation is destroyed, and Bane has fuckin wrecked him in combat. The Dark Knight Rises: Batman/Bruce Wayne the HUMAN BEING is forced to accept his limitations, and simply shoots the fuckin guy because hand to hand combat is ridiculous and has no place in Nolan's "realistic" universe altogether. Bane is a "physical challenge" for Batman- ha! So is a fuckin shotgun.

  • - DANGER: DIABOLIK* - SUPERMAN 1&2 - BATMAN (1989) - KICK-ASS - X-MEN: FIRST CLASS *I'll consider Diabolik a "superhero".

  • CSI + legendary franchises (Mortal Kombat, Batman, etc.) is such a brilliant an intellectual film-making style. Just take something old...remake it with gritty realism...and POOF! All the sudden a bunch of fanboys are praising your movie as if its Empire Strikes back when in reality, when compared to its source material, its like Dumb and Dumberer.

Complete prologue description with transcripted dialogue:

    by DiamondJoe

It opens with Gordon talking at what looks like Dent's funeral at the end of TDK. Gordon: "I knew Harvey Dent. I was his friend. And it will be a very long time before someone inspires us the way he did. I believed in Harvey Dent". Cut to a truck driving across a deserted field to a plane with hooded prisoners in the back seat and a guy waiting by the plane, who says: "Dr Pavel? I'm CIA". He notices the hooded guys and says to Pavel, "You don't get to bring friends". Pavel: "They're not my friends". Escorting guard: "Don't worry, (unintelligible)." CIA: "And why would I want them?" Guard: "They tried to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man". CIA: "Bane! Get them on board, I'll call it in". Wide aeriel shots of the plane flying over a desolate, mountainous landscape. CIA to the hooded guys: "The flight plan I just filed with the CIA lists me, my men, Dr Pavel here, and only one of you." He opens the side door of the plane. CIA: "The first one to talk gets to stay on my aircraft!" He holds the guy half out of the door. CIA: "Who paid you to (unintelligible) Dr Pavel??" No response, so CIA guy shoots him and throws him out. CIA: "He didn't fly so good, who wants to try next?" He grabs another hooded prisoner and holds him out of the door. CIA: "Tell me about Bane! Why does he wear the mask?" No response. CIA: "A lot of loyalty for a hired gun". Then a metallic, slightly strangled, unhinged, mad scientist-esque voice that, contrary to reports, is NOT British, but some kind of Eastern European or Russian accent. Its a mash up of Gary Oldman's Dracula voice, Roger Waters from The Wall and the Count from Sesame Street. It is also quite frightening and, annoyingly, muffled. It's coming from one of the hooded prisoners kneeling on the floor of the plane. Prisoner: "Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane". CIA walks over to him: "At least you can talk. Who are you?" Prisoner: "It doesn't matter who we are. What matters is our plan. No one cared who I was until I put on the mask." CIA pulls the hood off the prisoner to reveal Bane, glaring from behind his mask. CIA: "If I pull that off will you die?" Bane: "It would be extremely painful". CIA: "You're a big guy". Bane: "For you?". CIA: "Was getting caught part of your plan?" Bane (jauntily): "Of course!". Aeriel shots of the plane - another plane is approaching from behind. Bane: "Dr Pavel refused our offer in favour of yours. We had to find out what he'd told you about us." Dr Pavel: "Nothing! I said nothing!" CIA: "Well congratulations. You got yourself caught. Now what's the next step of your master plan?" Bane: "Crashing this plane!". The music picks up and we see guys jumping out of the other plane attached to lines towards the tail of the CIA plane and they attach lines. Bane: "With no survivors". Bane gets up and machine guns everyone. There is a melee and a fight. We see that the other plane is now dragging the CIA plane along with it backwards and it has upended. There are a few Inception-styl shots of people flying around in the cabin. The tail section of the CIA plane is blown off by explosives leaving a gaping hole, and the CIA plane is now vertical, nose down. The guys from the other plane drop into the cabin through the tail on their lines. Bane grabs Pavel and lashes him to himself and attaches himself to a line. Bane says something completely unintelligible to another prisoner who is, apparently, staying behind, to which the prisoner responds: Prisoner: "We have started a fire". Bane: "The fire rises!" Dr Pavel is screaming. Bane: "Calm down, Doctor. Now's not the time for fear. That comes later." There's a bang, and the fuselage falls away around them, leaving Bane and Pavel hanging on the line trailed by the other plane. Cut to a quick montage of shots from the movie.

    Saw a leaked version

    by christpunchers2007

Sound quality was good, but even then some of the Bane dialogue was extremely hard to understand. Very muffled. I'm actually enjoying Bane more than the other characters. The opening with Gordon talking about Dent was too hammy. Yeah, okay, so I don't know exactly where and how it'll fit into the script but I don't need another movie that keeps talking about Dent like he's the second coming of Christ. All he dudes he managed to lock up didn't stay locked up. It would be annoying if this movie keeps idolizing some dead guy just to keep the audience aware of TDK. (TDK was really only good largely due to Heath... it was contrive and unnecessarily complex at times in to move stupid action sequences forwarded, sequences that were shot like shit... the whole Gordon faked his murder subplot was unconvincing and illogical because who would give authorization for such a move that risks innocent lives?) Also the Catwoman shot was laughable. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Hathaway is a awful actress who Hollywood somehow managed to prop up something so much more. I don't find her hot anyhow, there are a million models, college girls and part-time actresses that look just as good or quite a lot better than her (she's got some freaky looking facial expressions). Being Catwoman has more to do than just looking a certain way or looking beautiful, if someone can't act her way out of a paperbag, her looks aren't gonna help. She looks ridiculous in that Halloween costume, like she's going to some frat party, not the sleek and mysterious Catwoman from BR, in the comics or even the ATS.

    Nolan fans are too easy

    by christpunchers2007

Yes, Chris Nolan knows how to make a good/decent movie, but he's no genius by any stretch of the imagination. Hearing the baffoons in the audience CLAPPING after the prologue ended, as if at the snap of Nolan's fingers, like an well-trained packed of monkeys, crushes my hopes that people can think outside of popular opinion for once. Heh, some blogger I read earlier said people shouldn't need to worry about TDKR or Bane's voice, because it's "Chris Nolan's Batman for fuck sakes! He can't do wrong!"... no one is above criticism. Anyone who thinks otherwise, is a moron.
