PITCH BLACK coming this Friday
Hey folks, Harry here. Ordinarily once I review a movie personally... I move on to writing about films that are yet to be seen. However, twice now with the site, this guy Vin Diesel has been in films that made me speak about them.... long after my initial viewing. First with THE IRON GIANT, and now with PITCH BLACK.
In your local newspapers you might very well spot ads for PITCH BLACK with a quote from me saying something along the lines of.... "THIS FILM IS NITRO! IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! NOT TO BE MISSED!"
Meanwhile, most of the reviews that have been popping up at various sites have been... mostly very positive... there have been a couple of hate-filled fire and brimstone style reviews of this film. It is my personal opinion that these people have their heads firmly lodged in with the kernals of corn buried deep with the fleshy mounds of the asscheeks.
PITCH BLACK is not a wholly original movie. But then... neither was TERMINATOR, ALIEN, ALIENS, THE ROAD WARRIOR or just about any other sci fi film you can mention (with the possible exceptions of BARBARELLA and 2001). PITCH BLACK is a formula film that completely nails it.
The best comparison I can come up with... is with food (gosh I wonder why I thought of that?) If you have ever had GREAT HOME MADE PECAN PIE... the type of Pecan pie that has a bit of alcohol, some nutmeg... fresh pecans... all sorts of bad for you items, etc... That Pecan Pie that when you take a bite you don't begin chewing right off. You hold it in your mouth... push it around with your tongue... make YUM YUM noises, then chew? Well... That's what this is.
You see... For me... ALIENS, ALIEN, ROAD WARRIOR, ETC... They are all great PECAN PIES.... But films like oh... OUTLAND and FLASH GORDON... well they are just mass market Pecan Pies. Films like SUPERNOVA, EVENT HORIZON and LOST IN SPACE... well they are that bottom of the barrel sludge pies that you take a bite out of... Chew politely... then push the plate away and say... "Whew... I'm full!" and promptly leave the table.
They are all Pecan Pies. They all have Pecans, Crust, filling stuff and are cooked in an oven (albeit the worst are cooked in a Microwave Oven). But for some reason... that extra bit of enthusiasm... that bit of flair... Movies like PITCH BLACK just taste so much better than the average Pecan Pie.
When you go to go see PITCH BLACK this weekend... Don't go looking for the 'GREATEST SCI-FI FILM OF ALL TIME'... This movie is NITRO. What does that mean?
Well... You see... NITRO is an accelerant. It is a volatile substance that can really get things going. But don't shake it up too much or it'll blow up in your face. NITRO is also a wrestler that can kick your ass. Nitro can also be short for Nitrous Oxide.... Meaning, it can give you a euphoric sense of glee. And it speeds up your heart. When I said that in my initial review... this is what I meant.
Also this weekend... The Trailer for THE X-MEN is going out. It might very well be attached to PITCH BLACK... as well as THE WHOLE NINE YARDS.. but if you've been reading reviews for THE WHOLE NINE YARDS, you'll know that that film is a piece of shit. PITCH BLACK rocks! Take some friends... don't hype em up. Just take them along for the ride. But see this film opening weekend. Cause... they... Them powers that be, need to see that a kickass well made sci fi film with no HEADLINE talent (as of yet, Vin Diesel will be someday) can be a successful venture.
I'm very pleased with the marketing of this film. It is very much, what I had hoped for when I saw this film last year. For nearly a sixth of the budget of SUPERNOVA, you get a film that should... if you aren't trying to overanalyze everything... that you should have ALOT of fun with.
This is USA FILMS' biggest release ever. And I hope to hell it pays off for them. Because frankly... USA FILMS has just been a remarkable little company so far. And it's been a pure pleasure to watch them release the films they have over the past 5-6 months. This is the first REAL winner of 2000, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. And remember... It's just a great heaping load of Pecan Pie.

Man, I'm getting tired of the constant jabs at this movie. I thought it was pretty dang entertaining. It wasn't a great film, but its filled with several creepy moments and some good special effects. As for "Pitch Black" - can't wait to see the darn thing. However, if it is bad, I say curses to the Internet!! Cuz it has gotten my hopes high.
-
What ever am I going to do?
-
Although, quite frankly, it's movies like EVENT HORIZON that keep me from getting 100% juiced about movies like PITCH BLACK. And even though I haven't seen SUPERNOVA yet, I've heard enough about it to make me wonder when we're gonna get through this sci-fi slump. Hopefully PITCH BLACK will kick some major ass. McFly<--

Sorry, but they are. Event Horizon - sure, 'Alien' meets 'The Shining' with all the subtlety of a train crash and edited like it's 'Yo MTV Raps', but fuck it, it's great. Flash Gordon (the Dino de Laurentis produced one) is such a wonderful piece of camp, it's like the 'camp' textbook. Sensitivity to its original subject matter combined with sensitivity to the way it's dated, delivered with panache and with fine, larger-than-life actors (especially Brian Blessed before he did that Gungan shit). I rank it with Rocky Horror Picture Show as a classic (hey, Richard O'Brien had a cameo in Flash Gordon too), and I realise that it isn't a classic in the sense of Harry's favourite pecan pies, but by that rationale neither is Barbarella, so what the fuck. Rest assured that I'll go see Pitch Black though. It sounds like it kicks ass.

Harry-- I read about this contest in the L.A. Weekly where you had to watch the SuperBowl and then logon to their website and enter the name of the tagline in the Pitch Black commercial to win tickets to a sneak preview. I'd already seen a trailer for the film (and heard your rave reviews), so I MADE UP a tagline a week before the Superbowl . . . and it happened to have the phrase "when the lights go out" in it . . . which was close enough that they sent me the tickets! Remember, this was a week before anyone else probably entered. Anyway, it's this Wednesday night, and I'm gonna try to go, but I might not be able to make it in time-- in which case I'm sending my girlfriend and her friend. Either way, I'll see it in the end, but I hope I get to see it at the advance screening . . . and thanks for perking my ears to the words "Pitch Black!"
-
Event Horizon was boring! A festering bowl of dog snot! I was all hyped up, still enjoying Sam Neill in In the Mouth of Madness and thinking, this film will be cool too. The actors and sets were great, but the script was boring crap! Like, you're going to have a marine come to in the first ten minutes of being on a ship and tell you, "I think it's alive!" And, what a comp out crappy ending! A film this bad and the characters still get to live!? Really, I may watch this movie every now and then due to the great casts and sets, but it's still a sad poor hollow shell of an excuse for a film.

What about a film where a pecan pie is bombarded by cosmic rays and mutates into a huge red bearded behemoth who sets up a geeky movie site as a subtle plot to control the world. The behemoth does this by transmitting a variation of the same invisible cosmic rays that converted him from a pecan pie to a mogul to invade the brains of readers, who then "eat up" eveything this former pie says... and subtly he compares great movies to genuine pecan pies so we are unwittingly made more sympathetic to pecan pies. Then, in a masterstroke he takes up residence in the whitehouse and we bow down to his pleasure because, oh yes, we love pecan pie. Hah, we see through your subtle scheme, Mr Knowles. Proleteriats pecan pie resistance fighters of the world unite... target your nearest pie store today!
By the way... waht is a pecan pie? We don't get them in Os-tralia. -
Event Horizon was shit, although it was the cooliest looking piece of shit I've seen. If they would have tweeked a few things here and there, it could have rocked.
Now as for Sci-Fi movies, when are the assinide suits going to realized that if a sci-fi movie flops, it's not because of the genre, it's that the MOVIE SUCKED ASS!!!!!!
Supernova reportingly sucks, so nobody is going and it's going to flop. But some halfwit studio suit will say "Well, I guess now is not time for anymore sci-fi movies"
No dumbasses, it's cause if the movie's suck, we don't care if you dig up H.G. Wells himself and put stand him up in a corner as a cameo, we won't support it! Plain and simple.
Sci-Fi movies nowadays aren't really sci-fi movies anyway, just action flicks shot in a backdrop of future tense.
I think the last REAL Sci-Fi films I saw were Gattaca and Dark City. That's orignal Sci-Fi..well maybe not to orignall, but alot more orginal that a movie called Virus which was hacked together by about a dozen previous movies....
Suits: Get a clue!!!! Make a GOOD, thoughtfull movie, and we'll go. -
Sorry about posting here, I know it's off-topic, but:
I've been looking into finally getting NOTLD on dvd, but strangely Amazon.com has about ten dvd versions of it listed. I know I don't want the version with the new fifteen minutes of footage, but that still leaves like eight other variations. I need advice as to which one I should get. Also, I've never seen Dawn of the Dead, but if I were to pick it up, which version should I get? The director's cut, or the theatrical? Is there even a difference?
BTW< to put this message back on track with the subject of Pitch Black, I saw it at the LA Comic and Science Fiction convention screening in December. Pretty cool, but it's been hyped way out of proportion on this site. Good flick, but no Terminator. Its tone recalls Cube of all films. Normal people in a strange, low budget(but inventively filmed) sci-fi situation, but more ambitious and actually has a character to root for(Vin Diesel's). The aliens _do_ look like hammerheaded Giger Aliens, though -- and the bird-like creatures are just lame.

I always thought that at the end of The Quiet Earth, he had been dumped on another planet because of what happened when he drove a tanker full of explosives into the power plant which was the source of the earth's instability. I love the atmosphere of the film - it feels just like it might feel a few weeks after a nuclear bomb went off, when all the birds stop singing, the cities are empty, and the grass begins to go yellow (okay, so I've read Raymond Briggs's When the Wind Blows too many times). I used to have regular dreams with that same atmosphere. I also think the end of The Quiet Earth has a similar emotional feeling to the end of George Lucas's THX-1138, after THX climbs into the light. Listen Ol' Painless, you shouldn't be too hard on New Zealand film. Just as Canada produced Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg, so New Zealand is so obsessed with its national identity despite its diminished and alienated population, that it gives rise to a Jane Campion or a Peter Jackson in reaction to the norm. It has also given rise to great bands like Split Enz. Okay, so here's the big test ... you may have seen The Quiet Earth, but did you ever see the short film Seven Days Under Mavis?
-
This movie must be great, because as any southern boy knows, there is NOTHING better than pecan pie.
-
Event Horizin is complete utter shit. Flash Gordon is miracle of film making in comparison.
-
Get the director's cut of Dawn of the Dead. It's got extra footage, nothing too spectacular, but still kinda cool. As for NOTLD, I think Harbor Bay puts out the best one, but I'm not too sure. Pitch Black had better be cool, Harry.
-
Does the same hold true for pumpkin pie? Will there be any whipped cream? I don't eat pie without whipped cream. This is all very troubling.
-
Event Horizon was in fact an uninspired piece of sinematic junk. Which is sad. It had so much potential. In the end it turned into a morass of quasi-religious crap.
Anyway, I hope Pitch Black is more original, and less forced. -
Ol' Painless, I never saw that Peter Jackson movie you're describing. I'll try and get hold of it. Seven Days Under Mavis is the sickest 30 minutes of celluloid ever to come out of New Zealand. It's about this old couple, they're farmers or something in the NZ countryside (ie not in the capital), and they're 50 or 60. The guy gets regular back pain. Anyway, they're having a fuck one day, with her on top, and she suddenly dies of a coronary or a stroke or something. Now ... get this ... because the guy's got a bad back, HE CAN'T GET UP. He lies there for seven whole days while his wife's naked corpse begins to rot, and he gets hallucinations from the smell and his hunger. I tell you, I thought Bad Boy Bubby was bad, but when I caught this one I had to put my lunch aside (vegemite sandwich, naturally ;-)
-
This was the one trailer that had my non-regular-movie-going friends saying, "Hey, that actually looked pretty cool! Let's go see that!" Rest assured, I will definitely be there. I want to hear more reviews though! Dammit, Harry, why do you have to see movies so early?
-
speaking of mad max, all of you new yorkers who didn't go this weekend should head over to the film forum (houston and 7th ave) to see mad max on the big screen WITH the original non-dubbed dialogue. the film forum costs nine dollars and they don't give a student discount, but for some things it is worth it.

I am seeing this tommorrow "TUESDAY NIGHT" come hell or high wat
by geekbasher 3.0
Tommorrow night in San Diego, there will be a sneak of Pitch Black for the horny critics, anyways I cannot wait! I am sneaking in no matter what!!!! I have been telling all my co-workers and my friends, they look at me puzzled, I don't think they have a clue what Pitch Black is really going to be like, but if Harry's been hyping this movie to the tee, I am sure it will rock, plus the premise and trailer sounds rocking! When I was in line for the Groove after party while out at Sundance, i stood next to Rahda Mitchell and we made eye contact a bunch of times, she was evesdropping on my conversation, I was just shooting the shit, complaining how fucking cold it was! Anyways I had no idea it was Radha untill after we got in, but i'll tell you this for a fact, she is a cutie pa-tootie!! I loved her in High Art, can't wait to see her kick ass in Pitch Black!
Lets hope this one is everything Harry says it is, and Man I cannot wait to see X-MEN!!! -
I e-mailed Yo-yo head Harry about Julianne Moore/Hannibal last week, but NOOOOOOOOOO, no mention of it on his site. Maybe Orca got him. Who cares, really, we got the info anyway, and lately there have been nothing but punkass updates on this site.
-
I saw the ad for this movie this weekend and it looked okay.... The monsters looked a little blatantly CG, but maybe it's because my TV sucks!! On the Event Horizon thing... I saw it, but I'll be damned if I can remember a damn scene, damnit. So my point is that it's not very rememberable. On pecan pie, I love pecan pie, mmmmmmmm ..... pecan pie well it's definitely a delicacy if done right. For those of you who haven't tried it, do so. It's very sweet and rich, but kinda indescribable for taste (it has a pie crust with a layer of a jellylike stuff very sweet with a layer of pecan nuts on top), but very good. Try it, you won't be disappointed (it looks funny but good unless you're allergic to nuts). Flash Gordan is classic, the music is awesome, the sets cool, and every thing is just cheesy enough (by todays standards) to make it enjoyable again and again. I saw the end of Road Warrior this weekend on TV and was again drawn to the epic struggle of the man in black gotta rent it again! That's my 2 red cents worth.

I agree with RobotHalo... Event Horizon was quite good, not 'goo
by brokentusk
Enough said....
Event Horizon had Sam Neill in it, that's a plus. It had Laurence Fishburne in it, that's a plus. It was creepy and fun.
It was definitely NOT one of my favourite movies, it wouldn't nearly be on the list, but it was clever, fun and creepy. It was not that bad.
P.S I am not first! -
Yeah, the film was a good piece of entertainment, all eye candy and cheap freak-outs, but ultimately zero substance and nothing at all to say and of course it flopped like a limp fish at the box office beach... Which begs the question: why did they greenlight the sequel, Event Horizon 2: Supernova (or Event Horizon 2: The Younger Generation)??
-
Hey, did anyone catch spartacus sunday? it was on TCM in the afternoon and they played it widescreen which was cool. i hadnt seen that in years, cool. people were just talking about it in light of the coming gladiator. i forgot, they actually show a dudes arm get hacked off haha, imagine the 1960 audience talking about that movie, like "man, it was brutal, it wa horrifying, a guys arm got hacked off!" finally, pitch black talk, although there still isnt much talk giving away exactly what goes on in the movie and so forth, thats good though. imagine in this day and age sitting in the theater and being pleasantly surprised, yeah imagine. although event horizon failed in alot of ways, i think it succeeded in some though, a ship in the upper atmosphere, some of those scenes were genuinely disturbing, it was fun, if nothing else, til the ending which got carried away and didnt really show anything amazing. flash gordon ruled, FLASH..AAHH AHHHH. I dont care, i liked krull! aahhh i said it again. it was cheese i know, i liked it anyway dammit. yeah pitch black, yet ANOTHER sci-fi movie thatll probably be somehwere middle of the road, cheesey entertaining whatever, sigh. who knows, maybe itll be the sickest movie since aliens...."why dont you put her in charge!"
-
Count me in with all the others who don't think Event Horizon deserves the beating some people give it. I thought Horizon was a very entertaining sci-fi\horror flick, the first time I saw it, it was actually pretty damn scary. I know what to expect now since I've seen it like four times and it's lost its fright-factor, but it's still an enjoyable movie, and doesn't suck. As for Pitch Black ... hoo boy, I'm finally ready to kick 2000 into gear with the first bad-ass movie of the year. And to top it off, X-MEN FINALLY DEBUTS! Damn straight! I know it's probably going to be some really short, 30-second reel that shows us only glimpses and will only serve to piss us off more, stir up encyclopedia-length Talkbacks, and clog the Internet with downloads, but dammit, it's going to be FUN!
-
I saw his film at sundance and I must say it was shit. Vin Diesel sounds like a made up porn-star or WWF name anyway.
-
If Pitch Black is as good as everybody says it is then it should be one movie not to be missed!!! And don't get me wrong I'll be there Friday night first in line for it, considering I love horror/science fictions flicks. But on another note why as good as pecan pie??? Pecan pie is indeed a delicious pie but there are so many other pies to choose from with equal or greater taste to it. Such as the Pumpkin Pie, that's a delious pie. What about the Apple Pie, or one my personal favorites the Cherry pie. But as a wrestling fan (don't hate me for it) I must quote the Rock here and say that there's nothing quite as good or satisfying as a nice big slice of Puntang Pie!!! But to be truthful IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT MY FAVORITE PIE IS!!! So I'll let you all make your own decisions up. Later.
-
Thanks, Harry, for giving a little bit of joy to all of us hooked on the Hippie Crack. N2O Forever!#!@#$!!!%@#$!
-
Ugh...I'm sorry folks, but I have to agree with Harry here. Event Horizon made me want to retch razor blades. That pain would be nothing compared to the sheer agony of watching that piece of dung.
The only remotely creepy part about that movie was the whole weird transmission thing that they couldn't decode until the end of the movie. But by that time, I just wanted it to end... -
Fans of 'Daikatana' and Shugashack.com will get the subject heading...
-
This review seemed "off" to me -- like it was written by someone trying to impersonate Harry, rather than Harry himself. The obvious pecan pie analogy, the lame "nitro" explanation . . . . And then I read Harry talking about the fall of the "Louse" of Usher. Harry wouldn't make that mistake . . . . Plus, Harry has supposedly been on some trip to the lower Americas, and he never reported in. This is what I'm guessing -- the studios have conspired to kidnap Harry and have replaced him with some pod person! Or maybe his mind has been altered through a traumatic event, as in the Astronaut's wife. I'll be alerting the authorities, you pseudo-Harry -- Mulder is comin' for ya!
-
Ill tell ya what though, id take event horizon over lost in space anyday, that movie had to have been the worst embarassing piece of shit ive ever thrown up in the theater from. that space monkey thing was the crappiest cgi add on since jar jar bin...oh, wait a minute...

Not too far from where the Mrs. and I live, there is this awesome Restaurant called the Old Mill. Guess what? It was once a mill that is now a restaurant; right down to the working water wheel and original stone work and wooden fixtures.
When you go there, they serve you dinner rolls, and some of them have Pecans on them with a nice glaze that reminds me of the pie.
Now, my friends and I like to go there sometimes and just talk about making film, dream equipment we would like to own, animation software that we use and plug-ins we would like to see released, what kind of films we would like to make if money was no object, what projects we're working on now. It's just a great time... I always drink too much and say stuff like: "Oh, I love to be able to make an all CGI futuristic porno version of Doctor Zhivago!" And then after all the laughter dies down, we all order desert...
You want to talk about awesome melt in your mouth experience? A nice Cognac with those Pecan rolls I was telling you about... and in the pond next to the Old Mill, they have ducks that you can feed. So there we are, me, my wife and my film buddies and their wives throwing the leftover rolls to the ducks. Their quaking a way, we -
Seems to me that EVENT HORIZON is one of the most frequetly discussed movies on AICN. For my part, I'm a fan. Yep, a fan of EVENT HORIZON (I bought the video, which for me is a big thing). I love the sets, acting, effects...but most of all, the atmosphere. It's one of the few horror films out there that is actually SCARY. I just don't get why a site like AICN uses this film as a benchmark of crapness. EVENT HORIZON is NOT the lowpoint of sci-fi. If you want a movie to dump on, use ALIEN RESURRECTION. Whatever crimes some people think EVENT HORIZON is guilty of, ALIEN RESURRECTION is 20 times worse. Anyway, PITCH BLACK is a long way from my shores, and I've yet to see the trailer or even a single shot of the movie in motion, so I'll reserve judgement. That said, if it lives up to the buzz (generated largely by Harry, it seems) then it'll be a goody...
-
I agree halfront, and there you go, ATMOSPHERE...yes, EH had a great atmosphere, despite other misgivings. the first time i saw it was on direct tv, a midnight showing, and it successfully freaked me out at points. the ship being stuck in the violent upper ATMOSPHERE was just a cool setting too. to bad the ending got alittle out of hand and cheesy, but alas, it was ....FUN......to watch. ATMOSPHERE. hopefully pitch black- "im somehwere else, my, what a cool atmosphere this movie has"
-
Whatever they are, they make me wanna see this movie. They are the most original and freaky-weird movie monsters this side of The Graboids.Vin Diesel is cool too,if not because of his name.Vin!Hee hee!
-
Pecan Pie, eh? O...k... Pitch Black doesn't look as enticing as that Pecan Pie yer daydreaming about. I'll see it on HBO, otherwise, it's not worth my 8 bucks.
-
Fonebone, I think you are on to something (if when you say "something smells funny," you meant this post from Harry). The whole post reeks of payoff. Granted, I am relatively new to the boards of AICN, but just the odd phrasing alone makes me think Harry is just pushing this film for ulterior reasons. Yeah, maybe it is really cool. But when has Harry ever told us to go take all our friends, no hype, etc.? He is pushing this film way too hard for it to be completely devoid of scheming of some sort. Hopefully, I'm wrong. Maybe I have just moronically misinterpreted Harry's ranting and raving about the film. But this entire post is just doesn't sit well...

Just be glad that Event Horizon didn't fall victim to the castin
by el duderino
You see, it can always be worse. Now that that is over with, I am pumped about the release of Pitch Black. Yet, this site has mislead me into seeing many movies that are far from good. You want an example? Okay, I don't have one at the moment. I just know that there are some. And unfortunately, this movie probably WILL NOT be successful. The trailer was certainly cool, with the guy blowing out his match and all the aliens crying in pain at the light, but the plot wasn't a total mystery like the Matrix was. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS SEEING! Then again, people say that this is one of those movies. Anyway, knowing how most people will assume something about everything, this film will probably be thrown into the lame Sci-Fi alien category for most people. Plus there isn't any sort of soundtrack that will pull younger audiences in. I love USA films. The two new studios I was introduced to last year, this and Destination, proved to be complete opposites. Destination should get bombarded pretty soon I hope (OH YEAH!! I THINK YOU SAID THAT BATS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PRETTY GOOD!!!). Anywho, we all witnessed the sacreligious failure of Iron Giant, which was a remarkable film by all means. This film should be the same way, unless there is a considerable pick up the next weekend after reviews come in and audiences began craving for more.
-
I very much enjoyed Event Horizon. I thought it was a wonderfully setup film (though the ending was a bit corny). The set pieces and acting were pretty impressive as well, though the characters may have been a tad flat. I'm hoping Pitch Black will give me the characters I want from a sci-fi horror film; Vulnerable, tough, real. From what I've been hearing, it sounds like Radha Mitchell's character is just that. Vin Diesel sounds extremely cool as well. Can't wait till friday! I am pysched about this movie.
-
All I can say is that the man's voice alone, had me thinking this movie is going to be tight!!!...I'll definitely be in the theater on friday sooking this one up...His voice is like Barry White without the fat, and jeri-curl. ;-)

After too many crappy pecan pie's i am sad to say that my new favorite desert is my mum's self saucing caramel pudding. Oh yeah, one more thing, when is someone out there gonna listen too me and make "consider Phlebas" by Ian m. banks into the best sci-fi movie ever made.

According to that fuck, Lincoln, at Countingdown.com says...
by sprocket-bot
...the (X-Men) trailer ain't coming until after ShoWest, which is in March. He 'aledges' that as a direct quote from Mr. Singer himself...now, he (Lincoln) has been known to pull publicity shit like this before. I personally think he's full of it...even if it is an actual quote from Bryan Singer, it's probably dated! I don't know, but I think it's coming this weekend, maybe I'm wrong, but I'm gonna call his bluff on this one! Check it out for yourself http://countingdown.com/x-men/

Okay geniuses. How would YOU have improved Event Horizon?
by dark jester
I know it wasn't a perfect movie. But it wasn't a terrible one either. But the way that some people here speak about it you would think that it was banging your spouses or something.
-
I can't wait!

Like warm Pecan Pie ... mmmmm

Thst honor goes to Disney's The Black Hole, though Event Horizon comes close. Anything starring Sam Neill is not quite as entertaining as sucking dog turds. Besides, has anybody ever really seen a scary movie? I mean, a movie that REALLY scared them? I don't mean a movie that had a bit of suspense (like Stir of Echos, for me) or was merely a gorefest, but an actually frightening film? And I don't mean when you were a kid. I mean as an adult. There were a few movies that gave me the creeps when I was a tadpole, but I've never seen a genuinely scary one in my 39 years of existance. And I would LOVE to be scared by a good movie. Blair Witch was as scary as Winnie the Poo, and The Exorcist and Jaws rate with all of the fear-factor of Thumbelina, so please don't mention those. Ditto with The Shining. No, I'm not trying to act macho or cool, I'm just asking a serious question of the AICN readers.
-
Sorry guys. It's understandable why this turkey called event horizon has a following. It is another example of an interesting idea gone sour.
Event Horizon blew, however, and no one is going to touch a sci-fi
film that resembles it, so your left to admire the concepts and themes
that, unfortunately, got botched on their way to the screen. And after debacles like Sphere, the hope for good, thought provoking sci-fi, diminishes. So definately go rent The Quiet Earth for a compelling. intelligent, conversation-inspiring film. And I agree, Flash Gordon is glorious eye-candy camp, that has not been equalled sinse. Sure, Spaceballs and Galaxy Quest, etc., have come darned close, but fFlash takes the cake. -
okay, so the special effects were decent...they looked expensive. but they were pretty expensive the first time around...when this movie was called "Alien." Yes, that's right.
event horizon was crap. not scary, not creepy. maybe i just couldn't get over how the first fifteen minutes were identical to alien. i laughed at the scene where they see the video log of the posessed crew -- it looked like something a couple of kids made with their friends and a home video camera.
the only thing that scares me about this movie is the number of people who find this movie absolutely scary and well-made. they should've spent they're money on a better script and overall idea.
...when will people learn that special effects don't make a movie? geez, it's the same thing with titanic. -
I think it's because most people saw it expecting it to be a sci-fi film and it's not, it's a horror film set in space. It's a spacebound Hellraiser, but wasn't promoted as such so a lot of people saw it expecting it to be something that it wasn't, while fans of that type of horror film seem to generally have enjoyed the flick (as I myself did, it's no classic but I think it is quite a fun and effective little horror flick), non horror fans, or those not into that type of hoprror film that went in expecting sci-fi hated it, explaining it's huge audience split. Just my theory on the whole thing.

had a great beginning, competent middle, lousy as all hell ending. To hear JMS Power!, of all people, trumpet its greatness only confirms its mediocrity. Oh, Pitch Black will rock.

OK, I'm a big EVENT HORIZON fan. But here's what would make the movie even better (I'm ignoring those who think it's crap to begin with)...restore the missing 30 mins!!! That's right, you may not know this, but apparently 30 mins of EVENT HORIZON was hacked out by the studio, which is why the "Sam Neill as th eembodiment of evil" thing seems so sudden and illogical. Look at the movie and you'll see the gaps - why the guy was sliced open in half (look at his scar...), why Dr Weir was so sad to see Kathleen Quinlan's character die, how Cooper managed to return to the ship so easily. Supposedly, the missing footage is slower, less incoherantly gorey, and establishes character and motivation. Iy's unlikely that we'll see a directors cut now, seen as the movie doesn't have a sufficient following. Which is a shame, as I'd love more EVENT HORIZON - a sequel would be fantastic, but it's just not going to happen. Meanwhile, Hollywood finances REAL crapfests like, ALIEN RESURRECTION, VIRUS and SPHERE. Aghh, the stupidity of men. Anyway, guys, stop slagging EVENT HORIZON...OK, I'll go now.

I saw this movie tonight (tuesday) and I left completely satisfied, given it is not ALIENS nor is it a Masterpeice but it was damn fun and trippy, Vin Diesel ROcked so did Radah Mitchell, she brought the perfect soft toughness sexiness to her role, no lets get on with the way this film was filmed! For all you ex-ravers tranceheads out there, the visuals are for you! They will use this movie on film loops at big raves for many years to come (as a matter of fact Pitch Black the Rave has been touring across America)
Anyways The AUDIENCE had fun, they was hooping and hollering and I was only bummed I arrived late and did not get my glow in the dark Pitch Black cups and Glow sticks! GO SEE THIS MOVIE THIS WEEKEND, KNOCK SCREAM 3 and make PITCH BLACK the # 1 fun trippy cool movie experience but remember one rule:
GET FUCKING BAKED BEFORE THIS FILM< YOU"LL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
