Lizard Concept Art From THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Movie??

Published at:  Nov 30, 2011 11:22:07 AM CST

Merrick here...

YESTERDAY we got a sense of The Lizard as he'll appear in Marc Webb's new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movie.

Today...a look at concept art of the character.  This comes to us via SpiderMedia, with a tip-of-the-hat to ComingSoon for noting it and posting it.  CS indicates: The Lizard looks similar as to how he did in the Comic-Con clip, though he was more massive in the clip, so this may be an early version.

Staring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, TAS-M arrives in theaters July 2012.

In vaguely related news: Vulture reports that the much-troubled SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK musical appears to be "making money now."  Really wanting to see that one for myself.  Some people I know and trust have seen it and loved it.  Other people I know and trust have seen it and haven't loved it.  My four year old laughed at the TURN OFF THE DARK musical number featured during the recent Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - make of that what you will.

it's a guy. with lizard skin and tail.... and they are going to CG his every move to be faster and more weightless than human-lizardly possible because that what CG artists do with action movies.

they story better be damn compelling (it won't be) and the characters better have some dimension to them (they won't) or this is going to be yet another origin story and a less than exciting villain.

i can see the toys gathering dust on the shelves now. i can see all the Lizard merchandise and packaging getting dusty and sunfaded and going from walmart to big lots to the dollar tree.

    Good to see..

    by nothinghead

.. That with all the staggering accomplishments we've made in the fields of prosthetics, mechanical puppeteering, and CG animation, uninspired hacks can still make sure that the most mundane, ho-hum design concepts make the final cut. Sure, we could have gotten this:

    http://www.beyondhollywood.com/uploads/2010/10/ifans-the-lizard-spiderman.jpg

    or this:

    http://people.wku.edu/david.hamm613/assets/lizard_revamp.jpg

    or even just this:

    http://www.toplessrobot.com/Spectacular%20Spider-Man%20v2%2013%20(16).jpg

.. but let's go with making a green, naked dude with turkey-neck. Why not? It's not like good visual design has ever saved a film before, right? Right?

  • one just falls completely flat for me. I LOVE SPIDEY! The first Spidey movie (though not the best of the 3) literally brought me to tears b/c I was seeing the first fictional character I ever loved brought to life on the big screen. And I was totally stoked out of my mind for every piece of info available for the next 2 films too. This one? I mean WHY??? Reworking the origin story to be more angst-y?? The ridiculous costume design when the one they designed for the Raimi flicks was a dead-on representation to show you CAN translate the original costume to screen. The ridiculous idea of The Lizard as the bad guy in an otherwise fairly realistic take on the Spidey mythos....when there are SO many other great villains to draw from?? And only ONE villain for that matter and you gotta make it one of the lamest Spidey villains??? Arrrrrgh....I was much more excited for a Dunst-less Tobey Maguire movie directed by Sam Raimi with The Vulture and Electro as was originally planned....siiiiiigh....

    Hence the more human face.

    But I say FUCK THAT.

The Lizard IS a monster, unlike the previous Spidey villains seen onscreen (not counting Venom).

I fully believe you can get expressive and emotional moments from a design that would have been more animalistic, and that means a lizard-like snout like what's found in almost 50 years of comics.

I mean, he's got a freaking Voldemort nose, Jeebus.

consider for a second if they had gone with the Scorpion

    by zombot

what reads and looks like a silly but cool costumed character in the comics would be totally ridiculous onscreen in real life- a man with a big backpack and tail hanging off of his ass.
somehow doc ock works but scorpion won't.

on the other hand if they'd just stuck with the fantasical, animalistic comic version of the lizard and played it serious, it would be acceptable. i think it would have worked.

instead they went the realistic route, which ends up looking sillier than the comic version.

hey suits- we know that spiderman is not a 'realistic' comic- so don't try to make it one.

realistically, would a lizard man be aggressive?

    by zombot

other than an agitated or hungry crocodile or kimodo dragon, lizards are pretty timid and lethargic.

but i guess a villain that can be found sunning himself for 8 hours on the ledge of a brownstone just to get his blood temp up enough to maybe go get a sandwich would be pretty boring.

    realistic though.

  • No one will care. We'll make tons of money. It's like the "new" DC books. Same characters, same backstories, same worlds, same villains, same everything. You are buying stories you already know, like going to see a "new" Spiderman movie, where everything is fundamentally the same.

    *sigh*

It's like monthly comics - buy our soap operas, where nothing changes, nothing long-term happens, and you spend $4 on 19-22 pages of lazy, stretched out, hacky story-telling that conveys 1/6th of an actual story, and you finish reading in 10 minutes.

    CASH GRAB.

Seriously, does anyone *not* know the first hour of this movie going in? You're buying a ticket to see the same story you already paid to see and already know, but with younger, more emo casting.

LOL @anyone who goes to see this.

Building a movie around the Lizard as a villain always seemed like a bad idea to me. They never used Kraven, Vulture, Scorpion or Mysterio yet, and they go with a weak monster movie homage like the Lizard? Sony is the new stupid of comic book movies.

Bring back Torment Lizard. The early 90's was the only time I gave a crap about comics, and it seems to be a time that is sorely unreflected in any of these comics adaptations. It's like X-Men. The last movie was preaty good, but really, there's just too much of this "It's gets better" stuff that makes the social commentary so on the nose that even George Romero would frown watching it. Give me the Jim Lee/Claremont X-Men damn it!!!! Just like Spider-Man. Give me the ass kicking mid to late 20's Parker that was married to a super model and was having epic battles with Venom, Lizard, and Kraven as oppossed to the emo shit with power rangers villans we've been exposed to now for the past decade.

THEY'RE TRYING TO COPY NOLAN'S BATMAN TRILOGY...

    by tophat

    Here's how it goes down...

Peter's parents die or "mysteriously" disappear.

Peter lives with his aunt and uncle.

Gwen Stacy becomes Peter's love interest, but, of course, they inexplicitly cannot be together.

    The Lizard's transformation parallels Peter's.

Peter learns how to become Spider-Man through fighting The Lizard.

He defeats The Lizard, becomes well known within the city, yet, people are still not sure if he's a good guy.

Osborn makes an appearance at the end of the film revealing the plans of what will ultimately turn him into the Green Goblin.

SEQUEL: Its the Green Goblin origin storyline, with Gwen standing in for Mary Jane.

Uncle Ben dies, and maybe Gwen.

Everyone hails it as a "serious" comic book film, because of this.

    Mary Jane finally appears.

    SOUND FAMILIAR?

Bruce's parents get killed, he has to live with Alfred.

Rachel Dawes becomes his love interest, yet, they cannot be together.

Ghul teaches Bruce to become Batman.

He defeats Ghul, becomes more well known in the city, but, people aren't sure if he's good.

The Joker makes an appearance at the end (even if its just on a card).

SEQUEL: Joker (who is more well known) is the main villain.

    Rachel dies.

And, of course, the films will be "realistic".

Just look at the design for The Lizard.

It screams "We're taking this seriously!"

    SONY is reacting already...

    by mako

Is it a coincidence that a leaked image of this comes online one day after the fiasco of the PEZ Candy dispenser image of THE LIZARD? I think not. These guys are hard at work trying to put a positive spin on this. So many correlations were made with THE LIZARD looking just like a Killer Croc/Hulk that a negative buzz started all over the image. (Mind you - the final version may end up being something very different - and the comic con footage/images do look like a different version to me than what we've seen these past few days)

THE LIZARD is my all time favorite Spidey Villain - so I'm going to be vocal about it more than I ever am. And yet - I've never seen him look more ridiculous in the past few days (including this image just posted). The body seems okay - but what is up with that head? It doesn't work Mr. Webb & SONY. What are you guys thinking? You want people to laugh at your villain?

I know why they chose to keep a more humanoid face. Studios are notorious for trying to humanize their bad guys for maximum effect. But it just makes this version of THE LIZARD look stupid. It just does. I want an actual LIZARD head/long snout and all on this mother f*cker. I want those huge fangs to snap at Spider like a f*ckin RAPTOR on ACID. Just having a more Raptor like head is going to catch the eyes of all the dinosaur fanatics and draw more people to see a cool looking villain. He's not an INTELLECTUAL BAD GUY. He's the polar opposite of his human side.

Connors goes from being one of Peter's smartest and closest friends, to becoming a primal REPTILE gone crazy. It's the tragedy and Jekyll & Hyde nature of the character. And this imagery I'm sorry to say - disappoints even me. Someone who has been waiting for a cool live action version of THE LIZARD since Raimi started the whole thing ten years ago.

Okay okay. I'm gonna stop. And try and move on with my life, damn it.

    - sigh -

Much better versions of THE LIZARD done before:

...the hideous, melty-faced bastard offspring of Richard Lynch and Billy Drago. With a long, floppy cock between his legs. Where's his lab coat? Where are his purple Hulkpants?!

Should have gone with Stegron the Dinosaur Man. Come on, just listen to the built-in awesome of that. He's a man. Who looks like a dinosaur. Unless, of course, the visually-impaired tit who designed this version of the Lizard ended up designing Stegron for a film. In which case, he'd look like Stegron the Billy Drago Man.

    by bootskin1

Guys, this is actually closer to the original design than the McFarlane'd out, snouty Lizard.

    Check this out:

    http://hiveofscum.wordpress.com/2010/06/10/the-spider-man-challenge-day-7-amazing-spider-man-6/

I understand that we're all used to the more 'crocodile' snout that has been used more recently, but it really seems that they're trying to stick close to the origins of the character (IE: Gwen Stacy being his first love, mechanical web shooters, etc..). It's only fitting that they use a design a little closer to the original. And who knows? He may actually be wearing a lab coat at some point in the movie. We won't know until we see it. Fanboy kneejerk reaction is getting as old as this website's lack of updating, seriously...

Zombre, good call on the Galaxy Quest villain...

    by darth macchio

I agree 100%. The practical effects work in GQ is superb and Sarris is a fantastic villain. Even something as simple as those lionfish spines that pop up when he gets pissed just makes for a more impacting presence on screen. (Galaxy Quest is a great movie on many levels actually!).

This new Lizard also reminds me of Voldemort and the lizards from V mixed together.

What's worse though is the voice - I'm sure you can find it online if you look. Rhys-Davies said it won't be amped up with effects but is really his own voice doing what sounds like a really shitty cookie monster voice after cookie monster mistook a small plate of hot, steamy shit for a cookie and was forced at gunpoint to speak immediately after eating said plate of hot, steamy shit.

But even then, i hope I'm wrong and this movie is great or at least fun.

Why can't these assholes that make super hero films just translate the look from the comic to the screen as closely as possible. I loved the comic and cartoon Lizard, snout, eyes, lab coat and all. This looks like a V alien. And it's BLAND, the worst cinematic crime of all. Production designers think they can "improve" iconic characters and it's all ego-driven bullshit. Not that I care because sitting through ANOTHER origin of Spider-Man story (5 animated versions,a 70's tv version and now a second theatrical version??? We get it already. Why we need another origin is beyond me. Does anyone in the know have any idea if they do this to keep costs down? It seems that a lot of superhero movies take away the super powers far too often; All 3 Spiderman movies have done it, 1 Peter doesn't have powers at the start, 2 he loses his powers for a while and 3 he just dons eyeliner and dances for what seems like hours etc. Without powers they are just filming regular people walking and talking which has to be a lot cheaper right? Am I talking shit or is this why they are doing an origin?

The revamped version of Turn off the Drak is flipping brilliant!

    by steverodgers5

I have no idea how bad the original Julie Taymore version of Spiderman Turn off the drak was, as I'm in the UK and didn't get to see it, but over the summer when on holiday in New York I did take a chance on the new version, and flipping well loved it!

Reeve Carney was fantastic in the lead role, and really nailed it 100%. (Though it helped that he had genuine chemistry with Jennifer Damiano's MJ, who he's supposedly dating in real life!) And I can see why there's been so many accidents. It's insanely ambitious in the types of stunts they try to do both on stage and above the audiences heads. But they definitely nailed Spidey's moves

And Reeve Carney played Peter Parker as a genuinelly likeable and witty young guy who was misunderstood, but nonetheless always heroic. Just like the Peter of the comics. And completely unlike Tobey MacGuire's I've got two facial expressions (Befuddled Dumb and and even Dumber still) mumbling, shambling, slow witted and cowardly moron!
I will never forgive Raimi for casting him, just because Tobey reminded him of himself in high school.

Nor will I forgive Raimi for that scene in Spiderman 2 where Peter after losing his powers, and seeing an old guy getting assaulted by three teens, puts his head down and slinks away leaving the old guy to who knows what fate?
(Contrast this with the comics and cartoons where Peter fought the sinister six without his powers. That's six of his deadliest villains and he took them on without his super powers!)

Not to mention the utter fucked up mess Raimi made of the Green Goblin, and how he let his hatred of the Venom character influence him in cutting that character down to the bare minimum in Spiderman 3.
No, losing Raimi and Macguire and casting Andrew Garfield as Spidey can only be an improvement there.

But I do agree with the posters above, in that I don't like what they've done with the Lizard. I don't like the design of his face..(I know it's like Ditko's but that's not the way the Lixard has been illustrated for most of the last 40 odd years,) and I don't like the actor playing him.
But I do like the rest of the cast, so hopefully that will keep the movie from sucking. If we finally get a decent Spidey on the big screen, maybe that'll help make up for the villain's shortcomings.

Green Goblin is perhaps one of the hardest villains to portray onscreen. I don't blame Raimi fully for that one, especially when he was given a hodge-podge of studio scripts to work with and it was the first truly big-budget Marvel superhero movie in an, at that time, unproven genre.

Goblin 2, however, eh, what did we as fans want? Hobgoblin? How would that make sense?

There have been some missteps in Lizard character designs in the comics. Sometimes he's enormous, sometimes he's purple, sometimes he has a bulbous head, sometimes he has fins.

I never understood why character redesigns in the PAGES OF THE COMIC BOOKS is somehow more forgivable than film adaptations.

No Nerd Rage, Gobby is hard to adapt

    by d.vader

First you have to decide if the Goblin will emote or not. In the comics and in the cartoon, the mask seems to be a real face, and by that I mean it can blink, it can change expressions, it can open its mouth to laugh or turn into a sneer.

So, are you going to go that way? And then if you are, how are you going to pull it off? With a mixture of makeup and a latex mask?

Okay, now for the sake of realism and believability, is it believable this villain would spend so much time doing this and have the artistry needed to pull it off?

Well then say you just go with a latex mask. So now the audience is watching a villain run around yelling through a latex mask. That could make sense, yes, the man is crazy enough to do that.

But does that work visually for the movie? For audiences? Again, this is the FIRST big-budget Marvel movie (I don't count X-Men), so they need to be careful with what they hope the audience will buy into and go along with.

Then there's the whole Bat Glider thing and how to make that palpable. They decided to incorporate the Goblin mask with some sort of mind-control device that allows the wearer to fly the glider. Cool idea, I'll give them that.

And they decided to go with a non-emoting Goblin mask, BUT had the forethought to give the helmet the ability to remove the eye lenses, so we can see the villainy in his eyes, and have a screen over the mouth so we can see him deliver lines.

Otherwise you have a hero and villain talking to each other the whole movie and the audience never sees their faces.

Its a bit more difficult than you think, Nerd Rage, having to answer all these questions, make something interesting visually, and then also answer to the suits way above you who might complain about how stupid one thing looks or how unbelievable another is.

Yes, I think the Goblin Is one of the hardest Spidey villains to pull off visually.

Well no, I have to disagree. Look at Spidey's costume for starters. It's a much more sleek looking design than the one in the original comics. Lot's of changes here and there.

So I don't think this is a case of them wanting to stick to the original source material. This is just a case of Lizard being a shitty design.

    by d.vader

The helmet idea is serviceable, but I would have given the Goblin more than the green test suit worn by that guy in the lab. If Osborn is going to modify the helmet into the Goblin face, at least he can do is add some flare to that suit too, I think the audience would have bought that (though maybe not the exact representation from the comics).

    Sticking To Ditko's Original Design?

    by mako

What? It doesn't look anything like Ditko's original design. And even it was - I'm not looking forward to a character look that was cool back in 1963 when most everything else in these SM movies has been updated to be more contemporary and cool looking. The head is terrible (I just recently caught on to all the bad "V" references going around too).

Not to mention the clothing issue that other people bring up that's really such an iconic part of the character. (I'm sure SONY thought, "Take off the clothes so everyone can see how much thought went into the textures we used on his skin. They will get the geeks all excited about our very reptile version of the LIZARD character!!") LOL

I really hope this is a mid-transformation design. Again cause of the images from Comic-Con make it seem like this image isn't the final one.

I thought the version in Rami's film looked awful, but it is kind of hard to have the literal comic book look of that one translate unless you go in Speed Racer 2007 style. Then the new and improved take on Peter Parker that removes his science-geekyness and makes him a depressed little emo kid.

Oh and the dark and serious take on a funny book movie, trying to ape Nolan.

And now lizard monkey. Looking forward to seeing this bomb.

Maybe it's because I'm not that bothered about watching another origin story so I'm not holding my breath in excitement for this movie but I don't think that lizard is ALL bad.
As far as the snout is concerned I'd much rather see a face with makeup and prosthetics that can show emotion and acting than a crappy CGI (Venom anyone??) snout that just breaks the immersion because it's so obviously not real.
Honestly if they could make a CGI snout that would look good on film that would be awesome but I'd much rather go for believable and good than absolutely true to the source material and bad.

  • Besides a spike in attention when the costume was revealed, this movie has been pretty much abandoned and left to sink into the shuffle. The comic con footage was noted and quickly forgotten, as has pretty much every other production development.

Yet there's still nothing known of the plot. And the casting is pretty much spot-on. And the director seems to be a good fit in the material.

I have a feeling that this movie is going to get lost amongst "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" and all the other huge tent pole flicks coming out next Summer, but I'd venture to predict that it will be one of the more well-received films of the summer. I think everyone is going to go in with low expectations, and I think everyone behind the film is highly motivated to make a damn good reboot(this is a make-or-break film for the 'star' careers of Garfield, Stone, Ifans and Webb). It reminds me a bit of "Batman Begins" in that regard. Low profile. Motivated crew. Tempered expectations. The result? Awesome movie.

    by kammich

True, but it also had most of its casting done last summer, and started principal photography in December of last year. Thats more than 19 months from the start of lensing to the release of the film, which is pretty strong compared to some of the other blockbuster expectants like TDKR and the Avengers(each one being about 6 months less than Spider-man).

  • That's the best reasons you can find that prove this movie betrays the comics? Raimi threw away the iconic Green Goblin mask, mechanical webshooters, The Death of Gwen Stacy, the random killer of Uncle Ben, WISECRACKS, and super attractive Mary Jane. This new Spider-man film sets out to fix most of those misguided omissions. The only thing the Raimi flicks did was capture the innocence and cheese of the Ditko era. Who wants to keep revisiting that endlessly? You want the Vulturess? Fuck off! We all watched the runny shit that was SM3 now it's time for webshooters, wisecracks and a proper Gwen Stacy story arc wrapped in a grounded, relateable comic-verse.

Daily Bugle 1st appeared in iss #1

    by darthsaul666

No Daily Bugle in Spidey is like no daily planet for Superman... Technically Betty Brandt is Spidey 1st girlfriend and met her working at the Daily Bugle. So the love story is still not really accurate. Spidey's parents were SHIELD agents. That angle will be fucked. Spidey's sense of humor didn't develope until iss# 10. So Spidey was rather humorless for about the 1st year. Not to mention Spidey graduated high school in Amazing Fantasy iss# 15. Spidey in high school is purely Ultimates line. Gobie mask? Well he had one. Raimi did get some things spot on. Sure not everything & undid a lot of what was spot on in 3.But I'm highly suspect with so much against the new flick so far and this is without seeing it. And it's being touted as accurate? This reminds me of how Snakes on a Plane was marketed.

about the specifics of Betty Brandt as the first love, Parker's parent working for the wrong organization and if Spider-man became funny in year one or two. Even the biggest nitpickers of the most hardcore fans don't give a shit about that stuff. You're really grasping at straws in desperation, looking for anything that betrays the comics. But things that Raimi did like merge Gwen and MJ, omit mechanical webshooters, omit wisecracks, omit the death of Gwen Stacy, change Uncle Ben's killer in mid-franchise, use an ugly Mary Jane Watson, have Peter Parker dancing like an idiot with an emo cut, etc. are all things that betray the source material and cheat the fans.

  • Not at all. You do the Goblin similarly to the goblins in Ridley Scott's 'Legend', whose design still hold up today. Osborn's mask should have been full-facial goblin prosthetics which, in the movie, could be removed by the character a la the Mission: Impossible masks. That way, you'd have a fairly faithful representation of the Green Goblin from the comics and the on-screen character could emote just like any regular actor.

Great back n forth on Green Goblin...

    by darth macchio

..and I agree 100% that it was odd to put Dafoe in the mask when all he has to do is grin maniacally and he looks amazingly close to the GG of the comics (not to mention, he also has a great face for Joker too!).

I don't hate the power-rangers thing even though I can see how it's a lesser design than it might could have been, given all the very valid ideas posted in this tb.

I like, for example, how he still manages to have little bits and pieces that take him out of a pure vanilla bad guy. Like when he first makes an appearance in Spidey1 sailing through the skies of NYC during the parade and, as he flies between the hot-air parade balloons close to the building to kill the board of Oscorp, he drags his hand along the surface of one of the balloons. I like subtleties like that (had he popped it, it would have been too much, etc).

I also like how he's a badass basically physically overpowering Spidey rather easily until the very end. I read the novelization (great work Peter David if you're on here somewhere!) and I really like how when GG mortally threatens MJ, Spidey flips out and stops doubting himself and then obtains the true power he's been unaware he had by easily defeating GG in a physical confrontation.

Dafoe also still manages to squeeze some of his own performance through the mask and I do like his voicework as well. But yeah, it's distracting and likely deserving of more "brainstorming" than just making it a helmet.

I'm not worked up about the lack of JJ and the Bugle

    by kammich

As Killik said, I think they're developing this thing slowly in the hopes of it kick-starting a new franchise. That is why we've seen Oscorp, but there's been no talk of Norman Osborn casting. Hopefully, they're following Nolan's suit of using a lesser establishing villain(Scarecrow/Ras; The Lizard) in the first part of the "reboot" so they can properly deliver the origin and initial character arcs without blowing their load on the king of the rogue's gallery(The Joker; Green Goblin).

I would love, just as much as the next guy, to see an accurately portrayed, better-costumed, menacing Green Goblin in film 2 of Webb's Spidey series. Establish him as a real threat, have him push Spidey to the brink, but Spidey still survives and comes out a full-fledged hero by the end of the film. Then, in a 3rd film, you add a subsequent minor villain but keep Goblin and go HEAVY with the "Death of Gwen Stacy" arc. You have to. Its the seminal moment of the character's entire history.

I'd love to see Christoph Waltz as Norman and Anton Yelchin as Harry.
