Herc Says Fans Won’t Want To Miss Tonight’s Antepenultimate BOARDWALK EMPIRE!!
Those complaining that nothing ever happens on “Boardwalk Empire” maybe missed the failed “Godfather II”-ish assassination of kosher butcher-gangster Manny Horvitz or the surprising dispatch of puritanical Irish politician John McGarrigle last week.
Tonight’s excellent episode contains bigger surprises.
HBO says of “Georgia Peaches”:
Undercut by Nucky, who has a new source for alcohol, Jimmy and his partners look to cultivate a new revenue stream in Atlantic City. With the peak tourist season approaching, the Commodore’s (Dabney Coleman) crew faces a choice in dealing with the city’s striking workers: negotiate or fight back. Fearing that sin has led to misfortune, Margaret approaches Father Brennan (Michael Cumpsty) with an “act of devotion.” Nucky gets a new lawyer; Van Alden faces an uncertain future; Manny Horvitz takes exception to a debt payment. Written by Dave Flebotte; directed by Jeremy Podeswa.
HBO months ago renewed “Boardwalk” for a third season. After tonight, two more season two episodes remain.
9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

Wonder if the bohemian, lesbian art scene is about to discover heroin.
-
this is an all Margeret and the children episode. Because that why people watch this show. When Boardwalk Empire was first announced the first thing I said was 'finally a show about a wayward widow and her children in the roaring 20s'.
-
This season has been a marked improvement over the last but it's still missing something to put it on the level of something like The Sopranos. In fairness I don't know exactly what that something is, though...
-
I'm a sucker for period pieces and BE's production and vision of the era of the early twenties never ceases to amaze me. We are fast approaching the 100th anniversary of the Great War and it's cool to see what forces and changes that generation lived through in a significant time of change for the nation. Some turned to crime and became the great mob bosses of legend. Some of the greatest moments on this show are so subtle that I think some people just don't get it. Some of the death scenes alone are things of cinematic beauty.

I can't wait for tonight. I stuck with it last season when it seemed a little slow but this season has been absolutely compelling. I've seen every episode twice. I used to look at this as an appetizer for Breaking Bad but it's become something I look forward to all Sunday.
-
They seem to be pushing towards a Lansky/Luciano power play with Rothstein and a Capone power play with Torrio. The timelines are off. Rothstein wasn't assassinated until 1928. Torrio had an assassination attempt on him in 1925 which led to his retirement. Neither incidents had anything to do with their underlings. Rothstein was killed because of a gambling debt. Torrio was shot for killing his chief rival in a revenge plot. From most accounts, Lansky, Luciano, and Capone were all loyal to their Dons. Other than that, I am really liking this season. I think Margaret is the only character who is treading water or regressed in my book. Otherwise, everything has gotten much more interesting.
-
I feel like it would have been a more edgy decision on the writers to have her throw in with Nucky's world 100% with no looking back. Having the innocent character we began with become corrupted with no apologies would've been more interesting, I think.
-
you're a turd nugget. This show is brilliant. And it's got everything anyone could possibly want - gun fights, brutal murders, intrigue, hookers, lesbians, nudity, incestuous moms bitch slapping stroke addled old men. It's fantastic.
-
which is why they are bored too bad go watch sons of anarchy

Topic says spoilers and I'm not seeing any spoilers in the usual invisible text.

still not getting the sons of anarchy hate on these talkbacks
by jsfithaca
no doubt boardwalk empire is better, but i still love sons of anarchy. w/e haters gon hate. does anyone think manny will team up with nucky to take down jimmy?
-
You are 100% right. This is one of the better shows on TV right now.
-
just making a suggestion for those that would prefer a show more on their level boardwalk was never meant to be simply a show about gangsters i personally love this era in american and world history really wish more shared my feelings then maybe our current world wouldnt be as effed up as it is as it seems we keep making the same stupid mistakes
-
a cuple weeks ago there was clear hate for it so i was getting a little pissed.

Because there's not enough SEX. That's right. I went there. Its the problem with most premium cable shows: They consistently skirt around the sex, but, still act as if they're being sooo "graphic" and "edgy". Honestly, there is no other reason to watch these shows besides sex scenes, because movies don't have them anymore. Even the recent SHAME was promoted as being so controversial, but, it was yet another marketing ploy; the film's sex scenes were no more graphic than what you'd find on a premium cable show. Even Cinemax's actual softcore has become laughably tame and routine. Seriously, all of the supposed "metaphors" and "analogies" and "moral lessons" should be no surprise to people who have graduated elementary school. If you think shows like BOARDWALK and others really teach you something about life or yourself then I wish I could slap you in the face right now because I know for a fact you're smarter than that. The only reasons why you'd watch these shows for anything other than sex that I can think of are storylines and plot twists. If that's why you watch, then, God bless. I, on the other hand, want to see that hot maid from BOARDWALK bent over getting it from behind. Sorry.
-
now has a new girlfriend. bring on the hot lesbian sex
-
While your idea sounds good in theory, Jimmy's wife is decent at best and that girl that she's with is absolutely hideous. Don't need any lesbian scenes as long as we get Jimmy's mom week after week.

Going to be hell to pay for that one. I guess you should never fuck w/ a jew...

Some good stuff in the ep, but the whole Margaret/kids/polio/Priest story just grinds the show to a screeching halt.
-
maybe this is the death of a major character on a cable show that ausiello was talking about. he said it was a woman
-
I'm hard pressed to come up with character on any show ever that is as badass as Manny. WOW!
-
nice that you grew up in a world with the polio vaccine....you stupid dumbass but holy fuck....why didnt they talk to howard stern before making this epi lesbians equal ratings....never bump off the lesbian...especially if she is hot
-
he is totally gonna lose his grip on reality...which was already tenuous at best he finally found someone outside of his sister who saw him...the real him...beneath the mask and the scars
-
We just lost the sweetest, most honest character on the show. I'm intensely depressed.
-
Did she tell her husband that she was a lesbian?
-
The scene where she tells Jimmy what's what earlier in this season, THAT'S what I meant by honest. She was honest with herself and she was completely honest with Jimmy when it came to her feelings. Her sexual activities seem fairly innocent compared to what most people on this show do. (And on a technical note, she wasn't a lesbian. She was bi.)
-
I sorta agree with you on the Margaret thing... although I'm trying to reserve judgement till the end of the season, after we see how everything plays out.
-
first, cuz she loved the bush....second, cuz her character allowed the writers to show the rise of bohemian society these were the original beats the peeps who migrated to the village and san francisco maybe someday, someone will do a series about sf during the time period right after the quake, through the 20s...it was an amazing town...full of everything

Still think the season ends with Nucky delivering Jimmy's eulogy.
by Pvt. Duke
He'll pause, leaving it vague as to whether it's for dramatic effect or he's really choked up. Although who knows where the show goes from there. The whole season has been the slow-motion crash leading up to Jimmy getting the bullet. The looks from Capone... the inability to lead after inheriting all the parts that made the old man rich... the blatant entitlement... the squirm-inducing belligerence with Capone, Lucky, Lansky... the aging racist honky brigade as advisors... a right-hand man who thinks he's an entitled scumbag. Harrow kills Jimmy, works for Nucky.
-
changes the entire show but hey...it would be a brave thing to do of course, that would also probably mean the end of gillian and harrow, as their story lines are interwoven with jimmy's
-
to go after a woman on a show, like to watch a show and choose a female character and trash her brutally. I understand that and I don't want to be that cliche. There are many women characters on many other shows i like. But i cant fucking take Margaret Schroeder. she is the worst. I want all her kids to get polio and then her to get some kind of disease. I seriously dont understand why they dont kill her off? If they do, it would be a great moment because they kill of a lead. I couldnt imagine there are any giant Margaret Schroeder fans that would rather have her on the show everyweek than a great moment where a main character dies. She's the worst
-
only he can stand with toe to toe Nucky. Jimmy just isn't ready yet. Great show, but the whole polio thing really depresses my wife...more boobies & less sick children please!

Margaret IS becoming tiresome ... her voice makes me want to beat drifters
by Behemoth
That sing-songy, lilting, annoying as hell accent. Ugh. So sick of her patheticism. Hate seeing what's happening to her kids, though. Truly chokes me up, including the poor boy. He doesn't have a chance with those "role models."
-
I hear what people are saying, however in the whole structure of the show she's the Keystone. Just let everything play out.
-
Her story lines go from cool to sad but they rarely stay in the same place for long. This season she has stashed money for Nucky, had an affair, went through one of her kids getting Polio, the stuff with her family, I mean there's a lot of cool stuff going on, it's just not necessarily gangster stuff. I tend to think the people wanting one hour of wall to wall machine gun fights lash out at her the most. I found Lucy to be way more annoying and boring than Margaret. I tend to think that The Phantom will discover the bodies and be prompted to take immediate action. They have set this up much better than the brothers who got killed last year. Manny is a lot more formidable. I would also not be surprised to see AR get shot as part of the season end. I think the death will lead Jimmy to making some grizzly moves and teaming up with Nucky as an equal. They aren't going to kill off his character. If anything they killed off the wife to have him in more relationships to capture the segment of the audience looking for that kind of thing.
-
He's not being killed off. He's clearly getting hit on every side and slowly losing it to realize his only salvation is by rejoining forces with Nucky.
-
I imagine Herc patting himself smugly on the back with a patented back patting device.
-
Manny is crazy as shit
-
I think Margaret is interesting in small doses...I definitely don't hate her. One of my college professors is completely enamored with her, thinks she is the best character on the show.
-
I'm reminded of my elderly relative, a cousin to my grandmother and the widow of Orville M. Penultimate Jr.
-
Right now, this is the best show airing on TV (at least until Mad Men, Game of Thrones, or Justified returns). Jimmy's rise and fall is great. This guy is going to go to a DARK place (and take Richard with him). More scalping anyone?
-
Margaret gets shot in the face next episode. Everything about the episode was great accept her dull as fuck scenes. If the writers don't want to kill her off just have go to Ireland for all of next season and just send a post card every second or third episode.
-
He already paid a horrific price this episode. I think the writers have more in store for him than whacking him for shock value.
-
I don't understand why Richard didn't step in at the last minute and save Angela from Manny. They've set it up the entire season. It would have made perfect sense for him to have been spying on Angela and her lover, whacking off in the shrubs outside the window or whatever, then peel off his mask once he saw Manny come into the room and burst in like an avenging and demented god of war. Then he and Angela would have shared the secret of her forbidden love. Hell, Richard would have even suggested they bury her lover's body up in the woods so Jimmy wouldn't find out and go apeshit that Angela was sleeping with a woman. Would have been way more interesting than killing off a character they've developed over two seasons, showing her as an artist and a burgeoning bohemian, letting us in on her friendship with Richard, etc. Maybe the actress pissed somebody off or she had another show in development. I dunno, just seemed a strange way for her to dies after her story arc. Maybe I just hate to see helpless women cowering and saying things like "I have a child!" before some demented fuck shoots them in the head. Probably the only scene I've hated since I first started watching this show. It just seemed too easy and lazy.
-
That kid (Margaret's boy) is a little shit for sure. Angela's death was so well done. Jimmy's going to go batshit and unleash Richard.
-
Without her the show doesn't carry the weight it does. She is like Kate Corlione with more screentime because it's a TV show. I mean if you dont have the patience to sit through those scenes then this show isnt for you. If the Godfather came out today you would all say it was too slow and uneventful. Too much ADD these days. I love this show, Maybe I wouldn't have liked it when I was younger. But i think it is just masterful now.
-

Harrow will feel responsible. If Manny has a family, he may want to move them into a bunker.
by Pvt. Duke
Richard will find the bodies (based on the preview for next wk) and he will feel helpless, and the only way to flee from his conscience will be to kill a lot of people. Rifle, Bowie knife, whatever. While Jimmy's off sulking and snorting heroin, the phantom could be adding notches faster than Eli can fire off brats.
-
so I can do a back-to-back marathon viewing. I hope it's worth it.
-

-
I hate that guy.

Manny Horvitz = best original television character since Al Swearengen
by grendel69
I know Al was a real person, but so little is known about him, Milch practically created him. Not including Game of Thrones characters since theyre adapted from another medium. And Im gonna miss Angela too. Beautiful woman who was always nice to look at. PS... Boardwalk Empire has kicked ass this season.
-
It would have been if Jimmy hadn't tried to kill Nucky. Not only that, but he administered the whole gangsterized speech to Nucky just before pointing him out to the gunmen like Judas. He wanted Nucky to know before he was shot that he (Jimmy) was responsible. I don't see how that could ever be forgiven. And how about that William Forsyth? Hard to believe this is the same guy who said, "Might good cereal flakes, Miss McDonough" in Raising Arizona. What a range.

Can't find a reasonable explanation why Jimmy would mess with Manny like that
by DynamixRo
Except to create some drama, of course. After witnessing first hand in the butcher shop just how Manny handles things, what does Jimmy do? He disrespects him, tries to get him killed, then sends him that watered down booze. Ok, I get it, he was short on cash and drunk with power, but it still felt very forced. With that being said, William Forsythe is a joy to watch. Too bad that the chances of him surviving the season finale are very slim.
-
... that Jimmy had firsthand experience of how savvy and slick Nucky is and thought he could match wits with him. That's not working out so well for him either.
-
When he was working for Nucky, the only ideas he had were great ones. He seemed to understand how to smooth over just about any situation. Suddenly he gets some power and becomes an idiot. It makes for some great drama, but it's a little tough to buy. I get the whole drunk with power thing, and he had never been in a position like the one he's now in, and I suppose that messed with his head, but still ...
-
Daaaaamn! Cold. I love this show. I love the pace at which the story unfolds. I love the characters. I love that each and every one of them, no matter how small they appear in the overall arc of the show, have had SOMETHING happen to/with them. I don't feel any need to defend my love of this show against the haters. Nor do I feel I need to belittle them with a 'If you don't love, get, etc this show you must be". Doesn't matter to me, because I love it. One of the most original and well-produced series to ever appear anywhere on television.
-
...his choices/decisions just aren't working out well for him. The fact that this is happening since he left Nucky, I think, is the point.
-
...is that feeling that anything could explode, any second, for little or no reason. Sopranos, in any given scene, could go from a casual conversation to a screaming argument or a violent death without so much as a please and thank you. Boardwalk Empire is much more of a slow burn in that regard. They end up reaching a lot of the same places, but they're going about it two different ways.
-

Margaret (and it looks like her son) WILL have something major to do with this show before its over
by Jaka
Of that I have no doubt.
-
the scene was amazingly well-done, but what the fuck. angela was such a great character. so many shows on tv these days have really cliche female characters but angela was enthralling and very likeable. at least they still have gillian. the margaret thing. good character, waaay too much of her. i feel like shes gotten more screen time than nucky this season. much better in the 1st season. she should be a supporting character not a lead. especially when so many other characters should be getting more screen time.
-
Wow Richard is going to go into full-on-bat-shit-crazy mode... He's a gonna do a whole lota scalpin' in the near future me thinks. I am assuming Angela did not survive. It would be a real cop out if next week she is recovering in a hospital bed (but I have the feeling those involved with this series have more balls than that). I will miss her because I liked how you saw in her character the beginnings of bohemian/beatnik/hippie culture. Somehow it worked within this story of booze runners on the east coast. Anyway, her story arc was very well done right down to the heart wrenching end. Bravo.
-
Great ep, and Forsyte is perfect for the role of Manny Horowitz. The real fucking deal.
-
Nov. 29, 2011, 8:26 a.m. CST
Although I was hoping to see a potentual romantic storyarc between Richard and Jimmy's Wife.
by Stalkeye
But alas it was a false dawn.
-
Best casting on a series with a ton of characters since I don't know when. Seriously. Don't know if there is an Emmy for casting work but there should be. Perfection.
-
...he had better hope that Harrow doesn't think *he* did it. Harrow will probably be the one to find the bodies, but 2+2 in his mind might equal Jimmy well before it equals Manny.
-
Who in their right mind would gun down two hot lesbians without at least making them put on a show first ? This show is ridiculous.
-
and angelas definently dead. she got shot in the head and u can tell by the promo for next week
-
That would definitely be an interesting twist.
-
jimmy is intelligent, but has constantly made the wrong choices in life nucky got him into princeton...he bailed and went to war came home and wanted a mob job...ez money...but didnt really wanna work for it so locked horns with nucky, the man who basically raised him thought he was being groomed for nucky' gig...when all he was being groomed for was to be a puppet for the men whose time has past he learned nothing from being in ww1 he is now engaged in a trench war...where there can be no winners he is fighting a 20th century battle...using a 19th century mindset he keeps trying to enter the new century (his attempt at dealing with the strike) but still doesnt get it not his fault though...look around...we in america still dont get it....and we all continue to make the same mistakes like the sopranos...this show is a commentary on the decline of american civilization....which started long ago
-
The assumption will be that Jimmy offed his wife, and the cop chick may try to play him against Nucky, only to push Jimmy back into Nucky's corner. Just a guess. Margaret is an interesting character. But the polio thing is a bit too much of her. And I also agree that Jimmy needs to be smart again. I'm kind of worried that dumbing him down (ie. making him less sympathetic) is a prelude to killing him.
-
Nov. 29, 2011, 6:27 p.m. CST
Next week's reveal: Manny killed the women not to stick it to Jimmy, but because of insecurities relating to his thin dick.
by Pvt. Duke
-
I think under extreme pressure people crack. That's what he's displaying, cracking.
-
Jimmys hot wife was the most likeable, innocent character in the show. If Jimmy grew some balls and took his own decisions, shit like this wouldn't happen. I really want to see a Richard slaughter fest now. The wicked must be punished.
-
It is a big difference between being someone's number two and giving him ideas, but ultimately allowing him to make the final decisions and being the guy who calls all the shots. Look in sports, many great coordinators in football turn into horrible head coaches. It's one thing to come up with ideas at time and another to be the one running the entire Empire. Also, there are a lot of things including politics and everyone out to screw with you that Nucky probably kept from Jimmy. Jimmy never knew what he was in for.
-
What they've done with her this season is just not interesting or fresh, it's cliche' and annoying. I like the actress and I still like her character, but that's fading fast. http://batstud.blogspot.com/
-
She is a good actress but I like the character in short bursts, sometimes her scenes slow the show down a wee bit too much. Aleska being killed off is going to hurt the show IMO. She was simply awesome in the role of Angela. Loved almost every scene she was in. BE is fantastic TV IMO. Buscemi has done a great job with the role of Nucky.
