Herc’s Last TV Talkback Of Sweeps!! Yadda It Up Here About MODERN FAMILY, X FACTOR, SURVIVOR, REVENGE, UP ALL NIGHT, AMERICAN HORROR STORY, NOVA & What Have You!!
Ugh. “South Park” is gone and tonight brings the detested semi-annual “Survivor” recap episode.
I remember when sweeps used to end with a mind-blowing episode of "Lost." Ah well.

Talkbackers have been mostly excellent at recommending shows to watch or avoid. AHS is something I considered watching, never got around to it. I know virtually nothing about it, except that Jessica Lange is in it. But I've got more time in my schedule now that I've dumped some shows. Is it worth watching?
-
Is superb. I watched it due to talkback recommendations and it's my favourite thing to come out this season. The cast is excellent. It's a like a rather good Horror Movie over a series, which sounds ridiculous, but there is enough weirdness and plots built in and revealed it just keeps going. Personally i think it hit the ground running, some series take time to get into the groove, this starts as it means to go on. Honestly I'm hard pressed to compare it with anything. If you're not intrigued enough by the first couple of eps then it's not for you.
-
Is it possible to give us a few lines as to what the show is about? Or is it really better to hit the pilot cold?
-
hit it cold. I didn't know anything about it when i watched either. have faith bro!
-
I've got AHS on DVR waiting to go. Just the first 3 episodes, thats all we're up to in the UK. Thanks to your recommendation I think I'll give em a go. Cheers. All I know is it has Jessica Lange in it, the king of the vampires from True Blood, Sylar occasionally and that its proper mental. As its from the creators of Glee and Nip Tuck, I expect it to be trashy, fun and turn to shit in its second season but until then it looks worth a watch. And yeah, Talkbackers do (for the most part) have good taste. I've picked up some good recommendations here, although having tried to get through the Spartacus pilot twice without success I admit there are exceptions to that rule

It's pretty slow, but due to talkbackers i preserved and it is well worth it. It moves along really quickly after the pilot. you probably need a marathon session of a couple of eps to really appreciate it. I persevered as well with supernatural, after really not liking the first season. Due to the wisdom of the crowds, i carried on and it got a whole lot better. Next on the list is Boardwalk Empire!

American Horror Story is campy and crazy and the most fun I've had watching any show this year. I didn't care much about checking it out until I heard a favorable review on NPR of all places, and although Herc hates the show, it has gotten mostly favorable reviews. Lange has been captivating from her first scene, especially when she's playing against Fran O'Conner. And the mystery aspect of the show has you listening carefully to every word the characters say in order to get any clues about their pasts. Everybody talks about the wonderful character development of "Walking Dead," but that show bores me to tears and there are very few characters I even give a shit about on WD. AHS may not be as "high-brow" as WD, but I find myself being invested in even the minor characters on AHS.
-
Its perhaps *not quite* as good as the pedigree of the producers, writers and cast would suggest it should be, but it is excellent at times. My only gripe with it is Steve Buscemi, who (as much as it pains me to say it) I don't think has the gravitas in his performance to sell the character. Thats a small gripe though. Season 2 is shaping up nicely. Fringe was a Talkback recommendation, as was Community, In Treatment and Falling Skies. So 3 out of 4 aint bad
-
as xjdavid point out, they're all good, the characters have been fleshed (!) out really well. Twin peaks. maybe i'm getting a slight twin peaks vibe from this.
-
I knew with Murphy being involved, he would shoehorn in homosexuality, and sex would be an overall theme, but I still gave AHS a chance. It's just too trashy for my taste, but I can't stand True Blood, either.
-
It's nowhere near as raunchy as "Nip/Tuck." I meant Francis Conroy in my previous post, not O'Conner. Tonight's ep looks scurry!
-
Looks like a catfight's a comin'
-
too much sex? in AHS? really? honestly i must be desensitised cause i've missed it. really don't think the gay couple was shoehorned in either. if you wanted shoehorned try the first couple seasons of torchwood!
-
I now officially love this show. Holy shit.
-
Spock was crying like a whiny fag while dressed in latex, his boyfriend was talking about sticking his dick in him (while naked)...there's nothing spooky or scary about the show. The opening credits are the best on TV, though. i wonder if making a weekly "ghost story/haunted house" show is even possible.
-
I want moar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that daughter... what a bitch!
-
King of vampires and Sylar? Please. They're the opposite of that. I cringe everytime Quinto is on screen, acting like a neglected housewife. You used to be great, man! Also, instead of the other guy's bare butt, how about some skin from young Moira? I know the creators are gay, but this doesn't mean the entire audience is.
-
It certainly captured my interest, but the almost vignette style of the different storylines, seeming to jump random intervals of time, and plain weirdness... does make me think of Twin Peaks or Carnivale or something. The thing is, it also gave me the feeling that the writers don't know their own end game, and are satisfied with putting in cool lines and situations, and hoping someone else will make sense of it all later. I don't want another show like that. Persons Unknown was the worst for that reason. Is that the case here, do you think?
-
All the episodes to date ( i think we're on ep 8) have revealed something that's been set up in earlier episodes. I actually quite surprised how much has been revealed. I don't know how they are going to keep the momentum up. To some extent they've raised the bar quite high, so i'm expecting quality episodes and to date i haven't been disappointed. I'm not sure how long they plan a season to be, nor if they have a huge multi season arc planned. I'd be happy with a self contained season and then a new season of new characters and situations ( i don't know if that's even possible!) Who knows what the master plan is, but I'm willing to be get invested in the show, because it's rather good. With persons unknown, that show didn't give me the same sense of anticipation. I think it was trying to capitalise on the success of lost and a long layered mystery and didn't quite pull if off. I think AHS pacing, character and story wise has so far. I know it's difficult being invested in a show for it to suddenly turn to shit or be cancelled. But I'm giving this one a chance. I've noticed that amongst the producers Tim Minear and James Wong. Those guys some have come up with some quality shows.
