Herc’s Sunday TV Talkback!!

HBO says of “Two Boats and a Lifeguard”:
In the wake of a personal loss, Nucky solicits advice on his political situation from Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg), while Eli (Shea Whigham) remains suspicious of his brother’s actions. Nucky finds himself in the unfamiliar position of showing gratitude toward a federal agent; Angela (Aleksa Palladino) meets a new friend at the beach, and eavesdrops on her husband’s treachery; Nelson gets a nanny; Nucky approaches Owen with an overseas proposition; Jimmy flexes his muscles, at Mickey Doyle’s (Paul Sparks) expense. Written by Terence Winter; directed by Tim Van Patten.

Showtime says of episode seven:

The relationship between Carrie and Brody becomes complicated.

I am – Hercules!!

    Once Upon A Time

    by Ines5

This Series seemed like a bad idea when I heard of it(Has Modren Day Versions of Fairy Tales ever Worked Before?!) But as Strange as it might be maybe it could work??

How was The Simpsons Halloween Episode This Year?

    by Ines5

I heard it was Better than expected and it Actually Aired in OCTOBER. I did not even know that could happen anymore!!

Hoping Dexter gets back to form soon

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 7:52 a.m. CST

    by BangoSkank

You and me both. The blurbs I've read say that this new episode gives the season the shot in the arm that it's needed... But the show needs more than one good episode to put it back on track.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 7:55 a.m. CST

Simpson Halloween was mediocre at best

    by OutsideChance

...and hardly had anything to do with the holiday. It was largely just parodies of TV and movies and not even horror ones.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 8:17 a.m. CST

The quality of the Simpsons is not as good as it used to be, but...

    by JudasPriestly

I rather have new Simpsons episodes than none at all.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 9:18 a.m. CST

    Oh, DEXTER.

    by blackwood

I don't know if they can save the MacGuffin this year, or if they should, or if it matters. I really think Hanks is crappy in the role, and they've telegraphed the 'twist' (or non-twist) so hard that no matter what turns out to be real it's all uninteresting. In a perfect world, instead of seasons with Crazy DA and Raper Cult, it would have been ITK, Trinity and Dexter himself. Mos Def was great. I think the turn at the end of the last episode was also great. I've liked a lot of the character moments this year. Batista and Quinn make a good partnership. Deb, always my favourite character, is getting a lot to do. I hope they're setting up for end game.

This season may still be better than last year

    by FrodoFraggins

Lumen was more central to the story and I thought Julia Stiles was pretty bad in the role. Hanks has much less screen time. I agree that Batista and Quinn partnering has been good and Mos Def was by far the best character this season. It will take something drastic for me to abandon Dexter. I had really high hopes this season, but maybe the new show runner needs this year to get the characters in place to get a return to form. The likely guess is that Deb will be the first one in the department to discover Dexter, but I think it could be interesting if Masuka is the one to catch him. He seems the most likely to be loyal, other than Deb, and give him a chance.

Something FINALLY happened on Dexter last week

    by MrEkoLetMeLive

I was actually surprised when Rudy showed up. Although it certainly does explain all the mentions he'd been getting this season, what with Matsuka's intern and all. Quinn and Batista should get their own show. Is the Chicago cop the new Dokes?

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 11:48 a.m. CST

Too much of what I watch is on Sunday.

    by gotilk

I think this will be a problem for many beloved shows, ratings-wise. They should spread the good stuff out a little more.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 11:51 a.m. CST

    Mr X.....Boardwalk Empire

    by grendel69

has been excellent this season. big improvement over season1.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 12:57 p.m. CST

    mr_x_: an unqualified YES.

    by blackwood

I'm actually envious of the opportunity to discover BOARDWALK in a continuous stream. It plays the long game better than any show I can think of. I prefer to consume television in two-to-three-episode chunks, and I found that in the first season of BOARDWALK, sitting down to watch a few episodes in a row felt far more satisfying than the week-to-week hour. The storytelling is measured and robust. Everything means something. This season, it has really started to pick up steam on an episode-by-episode basis. Absolutely among the best television ever made. Highly recommend you do.

    frodo: Matsuka catching Dexter

    by blackwood

That would be interesting. I think Matsuka has grown as a character this year, but I think that counts against him keeping Dexter's secret. It would be cool to see him struggle with it though. I think there's something dead fishy about his new intern. Maybe that will play out nicely. As I've said before: I'm in for a penny with DEXTER. I just can't help but mourn its missteps.

    Boardwalk Empire

    by Titus05

Season 2 is improved from the first season but some of the same issues remain...pacing is way too slow at times and too many interesting characters get pushed to the background (Rothstein and Capone)...the first 6 episodes this season seemed like an extended setup for the 2nd half of the season things finally started to take shape in Episode looking forward to seeing where this is headed...everyone can't come together and make up by the final episode like they did last season can they?...someone major has to die

    Today's Talkbacks... :-)

    by JethroBodine

I was just skimming the talkbacks today. There's nothing particulary interesting happening on any of these shows lately, but the reason I decided to comment is because for once, the Sunday Coax talkbacks weren't filled with venom and bile. Now I know that I am GUILTY as charged for spraying explosive diarrhea all over the talkbacks from time to time, but it was kind of nice on this lazy Sunday afternoon to check in and see that the conversations were civil for once. I didn't even haveta use my AK...

  • has slowed down the last couple episodes a bit but still good. I didn't think the first season was as great as a lot of people said, but the second season has been pretty good. Needs more chalky though. :)

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 5:03 p.m. CST

I thought there would be a lot more Chalky this season.

    by blackwood

The interview with MKW said as much. But it's not quantity, it's quality.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 8:52 p.m. CST

Wow, this season Dexter didn't just jump the shark...

    by don

that shark was jumped, beaten, raped, stabbed, chopped up, mashed, baked into cookies and fed to the other sharks. Wow, that was bad.

  • Otherwise there would be much more derision in here. <p> I can't comment on anything yet. I'm on the West Coast and don't watch Dexter or Boardwalk Empire until Monday afternoons. Bleh.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 11:18 p.m. CST

    DEXTER was kind of dumb.

    by blackwood

I half liked it. The scene between Deb and Quinn was great. Really touching and honest. But here goes Dexter, the ever careful monster, leaving his DNA all over. I know we're four seasons beyond where that was a part of the formula, but it still stings. I miss that monster. I did like the Brian stuff, for a bit. I just... don't know anymore. I think I'll keep watching but stop thinking about it. BOARDWALK was killer. As ever. And with Chalky, for the Chalky-inclined.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 11:19 p.m. CST

Loving Dexter this season more than last is hardly high praise.

  • Nov. 13, 2011, 11:24 p.m. CST

That was the worst episode of Dexter ever.

    by CherryValance

Wow did that suck. I never liked that one character that came back and then there was absolutely no reason to revisit that other family's storyline. How stupid. I should have known this season was going to reek when they hired Colin Hanks. What "Stranger in a Strange Land" is to LOST, "Nebraska" is to DEXTER.

  • Nov. 14, 2011, 12:16 a.m. CST

Boardwalk Empire can't hold my interest

    by daggor

I've tried a few times - the first two eps, then a few more down the line... the last one I watched was a big waste of time and some talented actors.

  • Nov. 14, 2011, 2:59 a.m. CST

therawbeats, I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing.

    by nomihs

Watching the dream sequences on BE, I was thinking Deja Vu. The look, feel, and even music selection made me think of the dream sequences Tony used to have on The Sopranos. Yeah yeah, I know that both shows have the same pedigree, but I'm quick to admit I really enjoyed that tonight. For those who hate on Boardwalk, I say good for you. Now go find another show that's half as good as Boardwalk Empire and you might feel half as good for watching it.

Once Dexter is in the courtroom season,

    by pikazerox

Last night's episode should pony up major evidence against Dexter. -Many witnesses saw Dexter leave with Nick the night before, Nick is missing. -Stealing a gun, and probably caught on store surveillance. -Admitting to Jonah that he killed Trinity, and being seen by neighbors after Jonah storms off. -Letting Jonah live with said knowledge without a second thought. -Stabbing motel guy with a pitchfork and the piss poor body management. Sloppy.

    Problem with THE SIMPSONS:

    by Chris Moody

Their "macgruffins" are weak. I mean, the show's macgruffin each week is more of a side note than the centric theme (ala Seasons 1-11). THE SIMPSONS worked best when it was a "show about nothing" (ala SEINFELD) and it showed a slightly dysfunctional family with real world type of situations in a colorful Simpsons' universe. Somewhere around Season 9, the show's writers began taking themselves -- and their fame -- too seriously. Krusty became a friend of the family instead of a celebrity and Bart's hero. Other characters became walking caricatures instead of legitimate characters. Homer became dumber...and it is rare to see the guy ever go to work (yet he holds a job at a Nuclear Power Plant?). THE SIMPSONS needs to return to a character-driven situation comedy based upon satires of real world situations -- even if they are almost pointless "nothings" from regular life. Satire is much better than parody. Unfortunately, the show has become a parody of itself for about a decade.

Family Guy's "Back to the Pilot" episode was amazing

    by Al

If you remember watching the premiere episode after the superbowl in 99, I highly recommend checking the episode out. They were absolutely merciless on... themselves of all people, and their cutaways. Pretty gold and had a great time-travel paradox ontop of paradoxes crashing into each other at the climax of the ep.

  • Nov. 14, 2011, 7:17 p.m. CST

    by Therawbeats

Watched the Family Guy onDemand after hearing the premise. You're right - it was brilliant.

  • Discounting the Star Wars parodies, which I love, I'd be hard pressed to think of a better Family Guy episode than last night. Simpsons, and trust me I absolutely love the Simpsons, wouldn't be as crazy to go back to their pilot episode and just rip it to shreds, and I just loved the juxtaposition of Present animation and Past animation styles. And i loved the prediction of what Family Guy will be in 5 years - all CGI and even lazier with their cutaways ("Matthew McConaughey is terrible"). Yes, Family Guy can get in to horrific ruts for episodes at a stretch, but when they swing big they usually hit. I'd recommend the episode to any Family Guy fans, present or lapsed. Hell, especially lapsed.

  • i think the ep where stewie and brian were locked in the vault as the point of departure for this show. last nights ep was possibly the best "clip show" ive ever seen.

Still hoping they'll bring it all together. 1)The Hanks storyline feels like an open "secret" that they're letting the audience--but not Dexter--in on until it is too late. 2) He was making mistakes because he was deeper in delusion than we've ever seen him. His paternal delusions were usually commentaries on his behavior, NOT motivating him to action. In essence, he was openly "crazier" as a result of the whole Mos Def storyline, asking him to have faith, destroying the object of his trust and friendship. Serial killers DO eventually make mistakes, or we wouldn't know about them. Let alone catch them. He came close to this edge. 3) It is perfectly legitimate to continually investigate Dexter's attempts to expand and express his humanity. His brother is clearly the doorway to hell. Loved the episode!

  • disagree that the western doesn't pull in big audiences anymore. I think that Western TELEVISION shows probably don't, but the Western has enjoyed a revival that started as far back as Unforgiven and has continues with success in 3:10 to Yuma, There Will Be Blood, No Country For Old Men (both I know that are not traditional westerns but are at their core westerns) True Grit and Tarentino's upcoming Django Unchained.

  • Also, agree on Family Guy's episode this week being one of their best in a long time.

Homeland / how to make it in america / dexter

    by rakesh patel

all fine programs. Homeland has started ramping up, with a 24 type twist. never really notice claire danes before but she's really good in this. I don't understand the dexter hate. It's always been solid for me. How to make in in america again it's solid, good cast ensemble. I thought the rasta monster spray thing was a bit OTT, no way was Rene gonna see that as a homage!

    Dexter, Uggh!!!

    by _Maltheus_

I thought that Dexter ep had potential, because I always thought they needed to get rid of Harry and send Dexter down a darker path. Granted, it should have happened at the end of S2 or after Rita died, but I figured, sloppy as it was, later was better than never. But then they had to hit the reset button at the end with him picking up Harry again. His sloppiness and rage came out of nowhere. And Dexter is not skilled enough at human interaction to get that cashier in bed, and just for a gun????, wtf was up with that? Somebody please shoot this show and put it out of it's misery. That was spectacularly bad. On the flipside, Boardwalk is now up there with Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Spartacus as a true quality show. Walking Dead is lame, but watchable.

    More Homeland Damnit!

Claire Danes has been phenomenal in this show. **SPOILERS** I too realized Brody was not a terrorist. However, I still think there will be a larger role he will have to play in the plot involving his sniper partner, Tom Walker (who turns out to be the real part of the plot).

and SPARTACUS?????!!!!! i stopped after the pilot. worst writing and for the most part acting ive seen since i stopped watching pilots on broadcast networks. why do people like that show? boardwalk was fucking amazing last week. really like nucky's plan. need to watch that ep again and ponder the dream sequence. homeland and dexter were both very good last week. i thought the dexter was one of the best this season.
