“Terra Nova” took a big dip with this week’s tedious murder-investigation episode. It’s now Fox’s lowest-rated scripted series not called “Fringe.” So it may not even hang around long enough for Fox to banish it to the network’s Friday Death Slot.

“X Factor” got a second-season order on Wednesday.

That “Simpsons” episode was “Treehouse of Horror XXII.”

Just about everything else on Fox during this first post-World Series week hit a season low.

“Grimm” got off to a respectable start as Friday’s top-rated scripted show.

Brian Williams’ “Rock Center” got off to a horrible start; did it promote its Jon Stewart interview at all? NBC intends to keep the series going for three years.

“Harry’s Law” hit another new low.

NBC announced last spring this would be the last season of “Chuck.”

“Body of Proof,” “Man Up!” and “Pan Am” all continue to look ripe for cancellation.

“Once Upon A Time” continues to pull in “Lost”-size ratings.

ABC just extended “Once Upon A Time,” “Last Man Standing” and “Happy Endings” to the end of the season.

“Unforgettable” and “Person of Interest” both got full first-season orders about a week last Tuesday.

Emmy-nominated “The Good Wife” remains CBS’ lowest-rating school-night series despite following strong lead-in “Amazing Race.”

As “Two and a Half Men” hit a season low, “Big Bang Theory” overtook it by posting a season high.

An interview with Ruth Madoff helped give “60 Minutes” that big 4.1.

AMC’s “Walking Dead” is still cable’s top series, but fell a lot on Sunday. AMC renewed it for a third season five days earlier.

FX’s “American Horror Story” got its second-season order on Halloween.

Comedy Central’s “South Park” re-emerged as cable’s top comedy thanks to the big drop-off endured by MTV’s “Beavis and Butt-Head.”

Only good new show I've started watching this fall: Person Of Interest

    by Nasty In The Pasty

It's not great yet, but it shows a lot of promise, and at least it MOVES. Ringer is melodramatic meh (although Buffy's stepdaughter is SMOKING HOT), Terra Nova is Seaquest 2.0 crossed with the worst "family" parts of Spielberg's WOTW and Falling Skies (and the subpar visual effects don't help), and I dropped American Horror Story from my DVR schedule after four eps because it's RIDICULOUSLY AWFUL and even offensive (seeing the down's syndrome girl getting run down in the street was the last straw). Beavis & Butt-Head's return is welcome and as funny as ever, but that's a ressurection of a nearly 15 years-dead series. I might give Hell On Wheels a chance just because I love Westerns, but there's nothing else new that piques my interest until Alcatraz starts up at mid-season.

    ATT uverse DVR SUCKS!!!!!

    by lordgrimplemort

Not sure if The Office changed times or what, but my u-verse DVR didn't record it and wasn't planning on recording next week until I changed it. Anyone else have this problem? Some idiot designed their recording settings so instead of just saying record new episodes it says something like "record any day around 7pm" or some crap like that.

The trouble with terra Nova is...

    by Kirsan

No dinosaurs. Kinda obvious, like doing Star Trek without aliens or not having the crew even leave the ship. And if they can't see this is a problem then they have no hope of seeing all the other problems. I just watch it to see how bad it is now. It's amazing in it's own way.

Fringe is played out - move Terra Nova there for Season 2

    by FrodoFraggins

I watched all but the most recent episodes of Terra Nova yesterday. It has potential, they just need to ditch Brannon Braga next season. Fringe is good, but it's run its course. Finish up the Peter storyline and separate the universes and they can end it.

Terra Nova blows. I do think Fringe needs an end, like Chuck

    by happybunni

Chuck lasted two or three seasons longer than it was supposed to? But this is their final season. Fringe should do that too, it's gone on a bit past it's due date... 4-5 seasons is a good run for any show. Except Terra Nova, it's been scientifically proven that watching Terra Nova lowers a viewer's IQ.

Well, except when assfucking your mom. One day, you two, Fringe and deaft0ne (and, boy, ain't *THAT* an ironic monicker), will look back on this whole "walked in on Fringe assfucking your mom" incident and chuckle. Way better show than the 1st, 3rd, or 4th movies were.

  • Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles is that series that captivated my heart and imagination like nothing before. The writers, the actors, the characters, the concept, the execution, the planned story (that was never finished). I'm still EXTREMELY upset and bothered that it was canceled. It would probably be the equivalent to a Christian witnessing the resurrection of Jesus and then seeing him brutally murdered all over again. I have not and will not watch TV again because of this. The fact that it all relies on a stupid system that depends on retards for a series to be renewed infuriates me. I LOVE and ADORE and LIVE FOR serial-type series with a story to tell. But I wait until they are complete (Complete Series on DVD/BluRay) and watch them in a short window of time to get the full experience.

    by bill

If you're going to make a show about time travelers from the future trying to survive in the age of the Dinosaurs, maybe you should Put Some Fething Dinosaurs IN it, some actual tension and drama, a sense of danger and adventure, and not make it a tedious hi-tech Little House on the Prairie remake. So far the stunning Shelly Conn is the only thing worth watching.

I was mostly of the same opinion regarding watching shows all in one session, until Buffy came along; there I found that it really lost a lot of its' appeal that way as you could see the pattern and structure of each episode was almost identical. After that I watch series on DVD maybe one episode a day, and that seems to keep it fresh.

I gave up on Tera nova Last week

    by Redhead_Redemption

I just tired of There being little to no dinosaurs. I'm sure producers felt like the audience would be more interested in how humans rebuild civilization but If that was the case, then don't set it in the age of dinousaurs. Viewers want to see dinos, not whiney emo kids and Dad's full of regret I honestly think a better way to have done this show would have been to have set it in a later time...Perhaps around the time of christ or ancient egypt. Hell go back even further to 12000 years ago or something. Make a pivitol part of the show being the new comers having to hide their camps and goings on from the indigenous people. Hell you could have mass amount of subtext about Cavemen or something seeing the Tera Novians as gods and therefore basing all religion around these time travellers. or the Tera nova camps changing history by getting in the way of historical events To me it just seems like the dinosaur angle was used as a hook when producers never intended to deliver

    by BrannigansLaw

... but it was squandered. The first season opened quirkily, and it seemed like it had good promise, but David E. Kelley continued to fall back on the schlocky, heavy-handed and preachy melodrama. Now it's gone fool blown law show, in has no where to go but down. Some of the characters are fun to watch (especially Jean Smart's), but it's just not enough to keep you tuning in. I just can't see how this show gets another season.

The FX don't help Terra Nova.

    by LORDOFLIGHT

I don't think the show's terrible (it's not bad in parts) but for a show with dinosaurs made in 2011...the special effects aren't that hot. I'm sure I could see through some of the dinosaurs and the Carnosaurus attack in episode 2 looked pretty ropey.

  • Not only that, but she runs into one and still manages to survive. Then staggers off half-conscious. Maybe dinosaurs are only dangerous to people who are armed. Once you are helpless they leave you alone. Who knew?

  • Nov. 5, 2011, 1:25 p.m. CST

Terra Nova would have made a great show in the 90's

    by Bodhizefa1313

But you can't write a science fiction show for a family/general audience while modern tv has become such a fractured viewing experience. The producers should have outlined a much more hardcore science fiction storyline and tone for the show, and they may have picked up the Lost crowd if they'd have done so. Instead, we have a show that feels like a mix between mediocre Star Trek episodes and Disney/ABC's old Family tv movie of the week. It just doesn't work for today's modern tv audience.

Terra Nova = Lost + Earth 2 + Little House on the Praire

    by Epsilon

But only after those shows were chewed up, digested and pooped out. I hate every character on this show. I wish they would all die and a new pilgrimage would be sent through. Actually, that should have been the premise. Take out the part about the past being able to communicate with the future. A new pilgrimage comes through to find the camp abandoned, Lost Colony of Roanoke style. That would have created some danger and mystery. Of course, with this show, they tease a mystery and then say nothing else about it. Ever. Drawings at the waterfall? Haven't been mentioned since episode 1. Mira's box? Forgotten. Lost was good about keeping mysteries alive. Terra Nova mentions them once and moves on. Oh, and they could have also thrown in some dinosaurs from time to time.

    Ratings

    by Jeff

Of course "Terra Nova" took a huge ratings hit. Here are the reasons: the plot is oversimplified and kind of stupid, the characters are poorly written thus forgettable, and the family drama which had no business being shoehorned in... was shoehorned in. They obviously spent a lot of time and money on the look of the show, for which I give them huge credit. I really liked the futuristic Earth they came from, and enjoyed the feel of the dinosaur age they've moved into. But how about something more non-family friendly? How about something unexpected? I mean, everything I've seen has been canned after-school fare. Only with a big budget. I'd encourage the studio and the show's writers to branch out into something more "out there." Less Jurassic Park, more high-flying Peter Watts or Stephen Baxter. No filler, please. Go for the jugular and let the chips fall where they may. This is how you grab viewers' attention, including mine, again.

    the problem with Terra Nova

    by Hipshot

Is that they created a series about dinosaurs when they can't afford to deliver dinosaurs. That leaves them with a huge hole that they can't plug. It isn't as if they had a show where from time to time a dinosaur stalked in--they started the season with a premier that was chock-a-block with hot dino action, and there was NO WAY they could keep that up. That...seemed a stupid decision, or at the very least a bait-and-switch tactic. Let it die. Bad show. No biscuit.

    Deaft0ne

    by The Bicycle Sharer

Bwahahahahahaha! You're like that old lady on "Kitchen Nightmares" last night -- you need Prozac, dude. I understand what you're saying. I don't agree, but I understand. I just think you're a bit over the top. Like I said, it's like you walked in on Fringe violating your mom ... and she liked it! Spiritual successor to The X-Files? Gawd. I pray not. I ain't exactly Bob Orci's biggest fan, but even I don't think Orci and company could turn Fringe into the shitfest that X-Files became in all-too-short a time. Now, regarding this ripping off Watchmen stuff. You understand that Watchmen, while fucking excellent as hell (and I'm assuming you're talking comic here, not movie), was just a story and that there was nothing new there, just a brilliant recombination of other tales. Like all stories, Deaft0ne, since our ancestors were sitting around a cave. There are only a few "stories" in my (and others) opinions and everything we see, hear, and read today is just a version or combination of those stories. If you don't like Fringe, booyah. Good for you. I happen to have loved the past couple of seasons. I'm not entirely sold on this one yet, but I wasn't entirely sold on either of the last two seasons at this point either. Where should it go? I don't know or care, man. I'm not the writer of that show. It'll go where it goes and I'll either like it or I won't. Personally, I hope that we have a good season. I'm interested in the sort of "reset" that's occurred. I'd like to see where it goes and I hope that they do it well. Other than that, I sincerely doubt that I'm going to get all bent out shape over it, one way or the other. Maybe I'm too old. Maybe I've been screwed too many times in the past by shows I liked being cancelled (Twin Peaks) or turned to shit (The X-Files), but I'm fairly certain I couldn't work up your level of outrage at this point in my life for anything less than a complete and utter violation of a family member. And it would have to be a close family member at that. But, hey, if getting that crazed about a television show that you can choose to watch or not is your bag, dude, knock yourself out. You just went after that show like it had done evil things to a loved one. Take a pill, dude. Change the channel. Calm down. For real. You might live longer. Finally on this assfucking thing (and you may not be aware of this) is not just for "gay sex." Perhaps you've never had a lady let you slip in through the back door. Probably not, actually. You've probably been far, far too busy watching a television show that seems to get you all bent out of shape to cornhole Mrs. Deaft0ne. Take my advice. Or not. Your choice. Invest in a bottle of lube (painful, I hear -- thus, my assumption about your mom and Fringe), turn off the TV on Friday night, and sweet talk She-of-the-Deaft0ne-ness into letting you slide in the backside. You clearly need some sort of release from Fringe and this may just do the trick. :-)

Agreed on TTSCC. And I'll add Twin Peaks, Angel, Deadwood, Arrested Development, Terriers, Drive, Life, and Journeyman to that one. Maybe Firefly, too, but I kind of like how the movie tied things up. Anyway, that list ain't nearly exhaustive. Just stuff I can think of from kind of recently. Between those shows that ended prematurely and others that turned into shit sandwiches (X Files and Lost, for starters), it's why I just can't find the level of vitriolic outrage and personal violation any more about the end of a TV show. It's entertainment. And it either entertains and goes on or entertains and it doesn't go on. Or it doesn't entertain and I change the channel or find something else to interest me. Of course, I guess I could just ... GET SO FUCKING MAD THAT A TV SHOW JUST ISN'T GOOD ANY MORE OR ON ANYMORE THAT I JUST WANT TO KILL PUPPIES!!!!! GRRRRR!!!! ARRRGHHHH!!!! Too funny, that Deaft0ne. Too, too funny. Keep up the good fight, Deaft0ne. I remember those days. Fight the battle against the powers, bro! Solidarity! Down with the man! TV sucks so bad. I wish I knew a way to make the things on that one channel not be showing on my TV anymore! But, alas, there is no way to do that. For there is only one channel and one show and I am so very, very, very angry about it! Hey, let me go post about it! That'll help! I'm kidding you, Deaft0ne. Like I said, man, knock yourself out. Agreed on X-Files. About four seasons, I'd say. Disagreed on Fringe. Problem, for me, with those first few seasons is that the last 60 seasons (or whatever it was) so screwed the fucking pooch that I can hardly watch the early seasons without the bad taste of latter seasons interfering. But, shit, at least I can still watch early stuff. And the way they wrote Scully out in Season 2 (I think, right?) for her personal pregnancy with the alien abduction was fucking genius. Genius.

  • Under Grammer's subtle and powerful performance, the artistic leaning direction set by Gus Van Sant, and nuanced and intriguing writing that recalls elements of Shakespeare and the Wire without being glaringly derivative, this show is a big big winner and I'm surprised more people are not talking about it. I can only assume that the show is being ignored because it is a) on Starz b) has Grammer in an uncharacteristic role and c) is more intelligent that average viewers prefer. Boss is moving, funny, revealing, unpredictable and above all incredibly dramatic at core levels of the human struggle with itself, others, and the world. It has the quality and sophistication of shows like Sopranos, the Wire, and Brotherhood, and may well come to enjoy the reputation those shows had. I hope to see more discussion of the show here at Aintitcool, which has a chance to prove that it is as interested in contemporary politics as it is in pure escapist entertainment that is as stultifying as it is purely derivative.

The very moment X-Files started to suck

    by Arcadian Del Sol

...was when they started letting Duchovny make up his own character's backstory. The show's "bible" basically said, "Mulder's father is somehow involved in a conspiracy and he may or may not have had a sister who was abducted." Then Duchovny penciled in, "he's addicted to pornography" in the margins. stupid douche.

  • Thank goodness--this show is a thrown together rip-off!!!

  • Seasons six and seven are uneven (and the move to LA lost a lot of the moody atmosphere of the Canadian locations of the early years), but there are still a number of great stand-alones, even if the "mythology" started to fall to pieces. Season eight was actually pretty good...the lame "Supah Soljah" stuff aside, Doggett brought back some of the hard-boiled quality the show last lost over the last few seasons. Only the ninth and final season was truly horrible.

Terra Nova needs to get darker FAST...

    by Andrew Coleman

I get the pitch "It's a family show first it's about this guy winning over his family. Will have the handsome son who is filled with angst, his sister will be a brainy dork who doesn't know how to talk to guys, and there will be a little girl! People will love it! Oh yeah will set in the time of dinosaurs but will barely ever show them or have them be a part of the plot" What pisses me off is it looks like they spent so much time on the set pieces. Their "camp" looks fake as shit. Look at Lost the characters lived in shit made tents and people kept tuning in. Terra Nova should have been humans coming over and creating the camp. Every night people are being picked off by Dino's and Sixers. Make it filled with tension... I feel like the families live on the set of House. No one... And I mean no one gives a shit about the family sticking together. They thought house wives in the middle of the country would... They were wrong... Kill off the little girl... Have her get eaten... Have the boy get kidnapped and converted into a Sixer. Have the brainy chick become a slut or a drug addict. Then you'll see ratings explode because the couple would actually have insane shit to deal with it.

    by oisin5199

I enjoyed it, sure. And there were some good moments (I particularly remember the voiceover when the Mexican gangsters were explaining 9/11 to Sarah Connor). And who doesn't love Summer Glau? But most of the series was extremely turgid, slow, and tried to pass itself off as way deeper than it was. And it mostly took itself waaay too seriously. It was passable and I would have liked a 3rd season, but it wasn't the second coming most people make it out to be here.

    by Gislef_crow

While I wouldn't describe it as earth-shattering television, and the Prince Charming character is dull as dirt (and thankfully absent from the second episode), it's got some stuff working for it.

It's got the ironically funny (Dr. Hopper = Jiminy Cricket, Magic Mirror = editor of the Mirror newspaper), it's got some obliqueness (does Emma really believe Henry, or is she telling him she believes him so he doesn't think she thinks he's crazy), it's got some good performances (The Evil Queen/Regina, Robert Carlyle, even Jennifer Morrison who was the dullest part of House during her tenure), and generally it's a decent hour of television.

Pilot episode was fairly horrid. But most are. The second episode, however, was leaps and bounds better than the first as they really started to bust out the with the detergent. Having seen the first two episodes it really is a FICO(Fables In Concept Only) rather than a FINO(Fables In Name Only). Either way, i'll stick with it a couple more episodes.

    Revenge...

    by tailhook

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Yes, I do likes a good soap opera and this one comes complete with killer machinations. Caught up with it today on Hulu after giving it a shot and just going to keep with it just to see where they go next. Frank getting crowbarred just as he was about to spill the beans was a classic. I really hope they keep the bodycount coming. That said, the special effects are shitty as hell as we get fake shots of the wharf from the bar, a lollerwaffle bad 5 story fall (and all she got was some broken bones and a Coma HAHAHAH!), and what not. But as long as they keep bringing the cheese, the chew the scenary music, and a big dose of camp(or VanCamp), let 'er rip! In a lot of ways it reminds me of Desperate Housewives in the first season, but then the same problem that plagued that show and ensured all subsequent seasons were fairly unwatchable could plague this one. That being, you reach a point where you've stretched logic beyond reason, and the story beyond the limits of the screenplay. How long and how many people can she 'revenge'. Does the entire Hamptons need to end up dead to fulfill the revenge? Was the guy who didn't deliver the milk that day and screwed her father royally an extra-special edpisode to come? Obviously you can't truly go after Stowe without ending the series or the story, which if the show is popular can take years. So basically it either turns into something completely different than its concept, and devolves into simply a Hamptons soap with Victoria vs Emily, or it just bogs down in its own pompocity.

  • Speaking of uninspired, I can't wait for WreX-files..eh I meant Fringe to get the axe. And yes, Connie Britton is a MILF.

  • But glad that Sons of Anarchy is still doing somewhat OK. Ad as much as I hate reality shows. (especially PIGS, er I meant COPS and not to mention, those dumb ass talent shows with the usual British Judge or annoying host.) However, my vote goes to Gordon Ramsey as the most amusing reality tv celeb. This fucker has this "in your face" mentality without being apologetic. That's one series (Kitchen Nightmares) that can't be scripted. LMMFAO

    Fringe reset

    by Mace Tofu

My guess is Peter will get with the Alt-Olivia as his Old flame is in love with the new guy. His relationship with Walter will be interesting as there is no Father/Son history in this new timeline. Peter will join the team just because he can hold his own. Terra Nova... Click on it and see a kid sitting on a bed playing guitar. Your in the land of Dinosaurs and you want to stay in your room and play guitar. Thats why I tune in : )

Derek Reese showing John his grade school father sealed it for me...

    by Billyeveryteen

TTSSC did get pretty great and it's axe hurt almost as much as Firefly. As one of the great apologists for putrid decisions with popular material, I'm kinda' shocked you don't get it.

Fox made a big investment in Terra Nova

    by Truxton Spangler

Setting up the production was costly, the pilot cost a ton, and they ordered 13 episodes right off the bat. I doubt they'd flick it in typical Fox fashion (Drive, Lone Star) unless the ratings were really, really lousy, so get ready to enjoy at least 13. The second glorified karaoke show with the snarky Englishman is also disappointing, so it hasn't been a good season so far for the network.

    Terra Nova = Telenovela

    by rakesh patel

great idea, full of potential, unfortunately it's just bland. I'm not sure who the audience of this should be. Doctor Who treads a fine line between catering for geeks, families and the 18-35 bracket. If i watched this with the family i'd find it inoffensive and dull, I'm not sure what kid would find this entertaining. Do you care about the "secret" of Terra Nova? I don't, and i didn't care about it in The Event, Flash Forward or Persons Unknown. Which probably puts it in good company. I'm not sure whom to blame here. There's about 10 executive producers. although Bragga and Spielberg by default get a special shout out. Who keeps on giving Braga Jobs? Tim Minear has had his fair share of cancelled shows, but at least they've been quality shows. Spielberg I find is a bit like phil collins. listening to his shit in the 80's and 90's was great, but damm if i don't find it a bit god damn cheesy listening to it now. if they've already got 12 eps in the bag, directions not gonna change, unless they do a major over hall. kill off all those kids and the fucking market place in a dino rage, it's preety much a lost cause. sus-sussudio.

Raising hope has been solid this season

    by Redhead_Redemption

This one of the most underappreciated comedies on network TV. If your not watching raising hope... START!

I already thought i watched too much - American Horror Story

    by rakesh patel

thought my tv viewing roa was full, but thanks to you guys, started watching AHS, half way through first ep and it's fucking brilliant.

  • Terranova is set 85 million years ago; the asteroid you are most likely referring to occurred roughly 65 million years ago. I think 20 million years is more than enough time for them to figure out their next move. By the way, you do know our own sun will go Super Nova in about 4 billion years, right? So keep that in mind when thinking about having kids since mankind will be destroyed anyway.

The Studios make the same error every time:

    by Ray Gamma

"Let's make a high-concept high-budget science fiction series" "Okay" "Who do we get to write it?" "Um, how about, a bunch of writers who have no interest in science fiction?"

Is it too soon to remake "Sliders" ???

    by MoneyGrabSequel

this has nothing to do with little burgers...we just need a good sci-fi show....Maybe Quantum Leap?

  • Nov. 7, 2011, 10:31 a.m. CST

    re: "Maybe Quantum Leap?"

    by jim

NBC tried that with "Journeyman". But they failed by making it more than a tired and lazy reboot. They actually made a good show so not enough people watched and it got cancelled.

Sliders will be back in some form, I'm sure.

    by Xen11

Sliders wasn't canceled because of bad ratings. Sci-Fi Channel canceled it before the 5th season even aired because they thought it would fail without Jerry 'O Connell. They were wrong and they wanted to renew it but they had already put all their money into other series. Sliders was the highest rated show on Sci-Fi at the time next to Farscape. I'm guessing it will be rebooted. Though, they can always make it a part of the original series with parallel sliders or even the same ones. Jerry being back would kick ass. Or just get all of the original 4 back.
