PUDDY cast as Fox's TICK!

Published at:  Feb 09, 2000 3:52:46 AM CST

SPOON!!!

Greetings, meat popsicles! ROBOGEEK here with an example of metaphysically perfect casting. This is a rare beast in Hollywood, which is populated by far too many people who think that, oh..., say, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin would make a good Hellboy, for instance. But every once in awhile planets align, execs are struck by a moment of brief lucidity, and fans' dreams become more than a wish their hearts make (like Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier, for instance). But let me back up first...

Many of you probably first became aware of Ben Edlund's inspired TICK through the Fox Saturday morning cartoon, which debuted in 1995 and ran for three years (and has since enjoyed a noble late-night existence on Comedy Central). But some of you, like me, have been TICK fans for a long, LONG time -- since the original black-and-white comics first came out years earlier. In fact, I'm proud to say that I was a member of the _original_ TICK fan club, and still have my official membership kit to prove it (which includes such priceless treasures as the official TICK straw, still in its paper wrapper).

Anyway, I've missed the big blue guy, and have been eagerly awaiting word on the recently announced LIVE-ACTION half-hour TICK series coming to Fox this fall from Barrys Sonnenfeld and Josephson, who will executive produce alongside TICK creator Ben Edlund.

Now, it's no secret that this site has taken a pretty hard line against Sonnenfeld and Josephson in the past, but personally I like them more than dislike them I'll never forgive Jamie Tarses for these crimes-against-humanity).

So I am very happy to hear that they landed at FOX with the new TICK series, as this seems like a very good match. FOX has the potential to become the coolest network _ever_ next season, with the TICK, THE LONE GUNMAN (a pilot of which has recently been ordered), and _hopefully_ BUCKAROO BANZAI. The only thing missing would be for them to steal away BRUCE WAYNE from the WB (which I hear they're itching to do), and they'll rock really, really hard -- even if they don't manage to bring "X-Files" back for another season.

About an hour ago, Variety broke the news that none other than PATRICK WARBURTON will play THE TICK.

Best known for playing Puddy, Elaine's boyfriend on "Seinfeld," Warburton has become fairly ubiquitous thanks to stuff like "Scream 3" and those M&M's ads (you know, the cannibalism one). I, for one, want to be among the first to applaud Sonnenfeld, Josephson, Edlund, et al on this unfathomably brilliant choice.

Production on the pilot is scheduled for early April. For (a little) more info, check out the Variety story at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000209/en/television-tick_1.html

And remember, EVIL IS JUST PLAIN BAD!

truth. it is an admirable casting , though.

personally, i'd much rather see them invest in another animated series. but with /much/ better animation than the first one.

I can seriously picture this guy as Tick. I wonder if a live action could possibly be even better than the cartoon, just to capture that slight edge of reality that the original comic book had. Now, for the Arthur casting! I pick Jason Alexander, any comments?

    by sith lord byron

Personally my favorite episode is the one where the Tick finds a strange rat-dog and hallucinates that it is speaking to him. He names the "dog" Speak, although it can do no more than drool. What's really fucked up is that he hallucinates that the dog is saying things like, "I love you." Gotta have this in the show.

    Other casting choices

    by cpierson

What's this? A talkback where some moron doesn't start squealing "it's gonna suck"? What's the world coming to? :)

When I first heard about the Tick live action, I thought Warburton would be perfect, but never really figured he'd be cast. Well, since _that_ worked after all, here are some other choices:

Arthur: Dave Foley (Andy Richter? Isn't Arthur supposed to look kinda like a scrawny wuss?)

American Maid: Linda Fiorentino (she's worked with Sonnenfeld before ...)

Die Fledermaus: Bruce Campbell (as if there could be anyone else)

Sewer Urchin: In an ideal world, Dustin Hoffman. :)

I'm not really sure about any of the villains.

Robogeek, I've been a fan of the original Tick comics for years, too! Remember the one where Tick and Arthur finally leave The City for New York and when they get there the place is just over-flowing with superheroes? And there's that great bit right before they leave when they encounter The Tick Society! Hee-hee!! I cannot wait to see Patrick Warburton in full Tick regalia. This is inspired casting. As for the casting of Arthur...this IS a quandry! I think Jason Alexander would be perfect.

    DreamCasting

    by jasondkeldar

Dave Foley as Arthur, Lord that was inspired .. As for Die Fleider Maus and The American Maid I am not sure but they must do, have to do, Barry and The-Evil-Midnight-Bomber-What-Bombs-At-Midnight.. Barry being played by the Jerry, since we are in a Seinfeld vein, it appears, and that of course leads to Michael Richards playing T.E.M.B.W.B.A.M..
Say.. couldn't that leave an opening for Janeane Garofalo to play American Maid?? Maybe drag Paul Reiser in to play Die Fleider Maus ?? And as far as bringing in Villains, whaich one from the animated series brought as many laughs as the aforementioned bomber as the appearance of that extradimensional cloning fool, Thrakama Zog .. Comic genius in that and every comic book of the series .. Say .. Michelle Yeoh as Oedipus ?? endless possibilities .. and you know Wayne Knight would have to voice the Zog by the way .. just some thots ..

    "arthur" casting

    by alicenwonderland

Rick Moranis needs work. Who cares how old he is? Dave Foley already has a project in development at NBC. Andy Richter is probably going to star in the pilot "HUD," by Steve Koren & the Zucker Bros, also at NBC. If anyone is interested in reading a network fall development report with this and other information, send a request to me at developmentreport@yahoo.com. I can send the file as an excel attachment. I sent this weeks ago to El Cosmico & Harry, but none of that information has appeared. I'm happy to send it to anyone who is interested.

Arthur, American Maid, and Die Fliedermaus

    by dave_f

Agreed about casting Andy Richter for Arthur. In fact, I wager that I might've been the first to suggest him when the live-action Tick story first broke some months ago. I dunno, gimme a prize or something. For American Maid, the clear choice is Janeane Garofalo. She slings the sarcasm like no other. Playing opposite her as Die Fliedermaus - none other than fan-favorite Bruce Campbell. Alright, Bruce gets suggested for every movie that comes down the pike, but here's a role he'd be damn near perfect for.

Ray Park could do Chairface. Just look at him in Sleepy Hollow. Janeane Garafalo, Bruce Campbell, and Woody Allen for Arthur are dead on. I'm not sure about Puddy for the Tick, but it might be able to work. Elaine from Seinfeld could also be American Maid, but it just wouldn't be as good as if Garofalo did it. But oddly, that Linda Fiorentino suggestion wasn't that bad either, because A.M. is sort of attractive in a Lara Croft kinda way.

Linda Fiorentino would be PERFECT as American Maid, but so would Tea Leoni, and she's probably more available. All those Arthur suggestions suck, though. Jason Alexander? Get your heads out of your asses, people. David Herman (from the original MadTV cast and Office Space) would get my vote. If he's not free, then Andy Dick is. And if Bruce Campbell is still tied up with Jack of All Trades, then Thomas Hayden-Church would make a damn fine Der Fledermaus. (Jason Alexander? Andy Richter? Dave Foley??? What are you guys smoking?)

MockingbirdGirl, if your suggestion for Arthur was Mickey of the Monkeys, I would love to see him get a second chance to "be" Arthur again. After Fox dumped his voice talent post-1st season, the "new" Arthur was never the same... Of course, we could use a profile photo with glasses and the moth suit, first.
Didn't someone mention Kelsey Grammer as Chairface? Andy Dick would make a better Chameleon Boy and Bruce could also function as BigShot [Punisher wannabe -- I think]. Personally, they should make "Stone Cold" Austin play Proto-Clown and put Leo DiCapprio in for Brain-Boy (name?).

Sorry to berak it to you all, but TICK live is going to suck rocks. It's going to be cheaply made and won't have much action. It's a
-half-hour-sitcom- Not a major motion picture. There won't be money in the budget for big action sequences. Remember the first episode of the cartoon? Well I can promise you that you'll see none of the physical humor on this show. You can't get a man leaping from building to building on the kind of budget that this show's going to have. While this dosen't necessairly mean it won't be funny (Odds are it will) It does mean that it won't be much like the cartoon and comic. It'll be...(Harry moment)adapted.
Remember lois and clark? Who were the standout villians from Superman lore? John Shea as Luthor(wee) and...Broncent Pinchot as the prankster?!? What the hell? What was that shit?
I'm sorry to be a "wet blanket" but it seems that people are psyching themselves up for this great action packed adventure half hour and what they're going to get is "Ally" with cheap costumes left over from "Nightman." Just realize the limitations set by the choice of medium and don't get your hopes up.

Puddy was the worst part of the worst episodes of Seinfeld (basically the entire last two seasons). Granted it was almost all because of the writting, and overall uselessness of the character, but I really honestly can't see this guy being good as the Tick. I read that he is a fan, so that so cool, but people forget that the tick isn't just a big dumb guy. He is like a big dumb excited six year old with super strength. I can't see this guy getting excited and screaming "Spoon!!!" with the glee of a sugar rushed kindergartener. I would rather see the guy who plays Jerry on ER and Kubiak on Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Him I could see as the big blue lunk. Never the less I don't know about this show. I'll wait and see. If only they would just make that long awaited Tick animated film that they announced so long ago. Animation is the way to go with The Tick. Isn't that obvious from how exceptional the first series was?

Now do you understand? Know of what you speak before you open your mouth. *Definitely* Bruce Campbell as Die Fledermaus. Actually, he'd have been a pretty good Tick if Puddy hadn't had the job.
But Andy Dick is perfect for...Sewer Urchin!

For Arthur,Dave Foley, Andy Richter, Rick Morainis, and Jason Alexander as possibilities for Arthur, but it was also noted that Foley and Richter already have projects, and that Moranis and Alexander are both too old. And besides if Richter didn't have a project, I doubt he'd want to play a sidekick role. I thought that was kind of WHY he's leaving Conan... Anyway I'd like to nominate Dave's KITH cohort, Kevin McDonald for Arthur. I think he'd be perfect! Also Ryan Stiles ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?", "The Drew Carey Show") would be a pretty cool Chair-Face.
