Watch Now The Full Darabont-Free 45-Minute WALKING DEAD Panel At New York Comic-Con!!

Published at: Oct. 21, 2011, 4:25 p.m. CST by hercules

I am – Hercules!!

While not as entertaining as the Oswalt-infused premiere of  AMC's “Talking Dead,” the New York Comic Con “Walking Dead” panel moderated by Chris Hardwick did offer some interesting tidbits:

* Comic creator Robert Kirkman says Michael Rooker’s racist amputee Merle Dixon will definitely not evolve into the comic book’s crazed The Governor.

* While Kentucky-based Kirkman was assigned to script the “Vatos” episode last season, he apparently was not actively involved in crafting the overall season-one storyline with Frank Darabont and Charles Eglee last year. In the post-Darabont era, Kirkman is has been transported to L.A. and now sits in the writer’s room.

* Piping hot 28-year-old Lauren Cohan (“Supernatural,” “Vampire Diaries,” “Chuck”) will be introduced as Maggie Greene this season. (SPOILER: In the comics, Maggie bones Glenn.)

* A female character from the comics, the katana-wielding Michonne, will soon be joining the TV version.

* Absent was any mention of ousted series mastermind Frank Darabont. Also missing was former “Crash” showrunner Glen Mazzara, who actually runs “Dead” since Darabont’s firing.

    First?

    by Joaquin_Ondamoon

    Does it matter?

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 4:39 p.m. CST

    Michonne?

    by ArchiLeachCouldKickYourAss

Major character that you VERY EASILY could have looked up online (you know, research) before posting this article. On a side note: fucking great character! Still sad about Tyrese but maybe he'll join after the farm.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 4:41 p.m. CST

Looking forward to Mike Rooker's return...

    by Joaquin_Ondamoon

...I'm really starting to like his other brother Daryl. I'm wondering if he'll revert to form when his left handed bro comes back. Although he did call Glenn 'Short Round' while they were tracking the lost kid. Lol.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 4:49 p.m. CST

    It's Michonne.

    by Jimmie Harp

Botht eh girl in the audience and Kirkman say it numerous times....they sre definitely talking about Michonne!

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 4:50 p.m. CST

    Michonne

    by Hercules

    so amended.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 4:54 p.m. CST

Is Merle coming back at all?

    by ImperialMarchFace

Is that confirmed, or just speculation? Because they can bring him back whenever they want, the way that they left it. Let Darryl do his thing for a while, because he is turning out to be a great character. Good news about Michonne.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 5:01 p.m. CST

    I'm just speculating about Merle..

    by Joaquin_Ondamoon

..I think it makes for good conflict. Merle's gonna be pissed about his hand, he's gonna look for payback. Daryl's spent some time with these people now - will he side with is bro, or the people he's been with for awhile now? It just seems inevitable to me...

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 5:16 p.m. CST

Maybe he WORKS for the Governor...

    by ImperialMarchFace

They need plenty of those guys anyway. Oh man, what if we just saw him in the Governor's "game", totally kicking ass?! New dream theory!

    Hey Herc,

    by Lashlarue

Can we have an American Horror Story talkback? I'm really starting to dig that show. I hope Kirkman starts writing more episodes. I feel like this show really needs more of his input.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 6:25 p.m. CST

how about a talkback for uk viewers??

    by paul burnett

that was better than expected, the ending caught me unaware..

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 6:25 p.m. CST

Merle wouldn't have worked as the Governor anyways

    by Bass Ackwards

The governor does afterall still need to be a leader, Merle is more of just an antagonist.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 7:25 p.m. CST

What?! No Tyrese?!! That's a big disappointment.

    by sweeneydave

Tyrese was my favorite character for a good long while. Also, we they completely skipped over the gated community that they took refuge in during the winter. I know they are only barely following the structure of the comics, and I'm good with that because it keeps me guessing with the show AND the comics. But I'd still like to see some of my favorite scenes on TV.

OT: I never rag on Herc for stuff

    by buffywrestling

but today would have been a great day for a Supernatural talkback. Thank you for the Walking Dead link though, brother. I don't find it nearly as irritating as people who have played first shooter zombie games.

Michonne needs a slight revision for the show

    by Turingtestee

I don't see her working in the show as she does in the comics. Instead of making her more human and realistic, she'll likely end up far too uberbadass.

  • Oct. 21, 2011, 8:25 p.m. CST

    I suspect T-Dawg IS Tyrese

I kind of feel like Shane is Tyrese

    by Bass Ackwards

Tyrese was basically the other alpha-male of the group. Seems like the show decided rather than introduce another character, they could just change Shane's story and roll him into that second alpha-male slot, and it lets them play/develop the existing character history between Shane & Rick more then they would get with Tyrese.

From what I have taken from various interviews the show is sticking with the major locations and the Wiltshire Estates gated community was just one night. Since they got rid of Donna, Allen and the twins there really is no reason to stop their for the one night that they spend inside the gates in the comic. The loss of the twins bothers me not because they are important, though they strengthen the Dale/Andrea relationship, but because of the role they play in the development of Carl who is the most fascinating character.

I think you're right about Tyrese and Shane. Keeping Shane alive does allow for multiple avenues of character development that Tyrese in his comic form just couldn't offer in a relationship with Rick. However, he is a brilliant character in his own right with amazing scenes: the basketball court, killing his daughter's boyfriend, and his death are all emotionally intense. What characters do you hope to see/not see in the coming seasons? Eventually they'll get to Alexandria but I really hope that they introduce Abraham before then.

  • There have been so many that I really cannot name them except for Shane, Tyrese, Dale and Morgan.

  • -- but how is that possible? I mean, where's the other 30 - 40 minutes? Was it THAT bad? Did they never finish it and move on to episode 2? I've been thinking about it alot since you first mentioned it and it just doesn't track, somehow ... That just feels like a lot of work to cut loose ...

Lori (Rick's wife) is kind of a big one. Also Amy (Andrea's sister). <br>

    Tyrese

    by FitnaTheForbiddenMovie

I get the feeling that Tyrese is being replaced with Darryl. The storyline with Tyrese's daughter and her boyfriend was probably not going to work out on tv. Maybe Tyrese or a similar character will be in the prison. I also get the feeling the highway from season 2's opener was a (cheap) stand-in for the zombie infested suburb they went to before ending up on Hershel's farm.

  • Oct. 22, 2011, 10:52 a.m. CST

I agree Shane will kind of take Tyreese role

    by grendel69

IMHO they like Jon Bernthal , and want to keep him around. Sort of like what True Blood did with Lafayette.

  • Oct. 22, 2011, 10:55 a.m. CST

I enjoy the show but also have a major complaint

    by grendel69

Too many pivitol moments from the books are sadly missing from the show, like the already mentioned Wilshire Estates scene.

    Tyrese

    by gandalftheblack

I would have loved Chad "Cuddy From The Wire" Coleman to have played him on the live action series. I don't see Shane & Rick having the same type of alpha male standoff relationship that Tyrese and Rick did due to Shane & Lori's situation.

  • Oct. 22, 2011, 11:55 p.m. CST

    heh

    by Richard

imdb lists the gang leader from "Vatos" as being in tonight's episode... not sure if I like that or not. there's only so many people you can circumstantially run into people before it starts to be too unbelievable. rick reuniting with his wife and kid so far from his home is a stretch in itself. now they're going to run into Guillermo again, after they've left Atlanta? and then (this one I actually hope for, but it'd have to be done right) we'll get Merle back, eventually. can't wait for tonight's episode, regardless!

  • Oct. 23, 2011, 1:22 a.m. CST

Chad Coleman is and excellent choice for Tyrese

    by Xiphos_2

To bad we won't see it.

  • Nice glimpse of her awesome ass in those tight jeans, too.

I saw tonight's episode about a week ago. If the "Vatos" leader is in it, he must be hiding behind a tree or something.

    Snyder you're trying to hard

    by Xiphos_2

Nobody is buying your hetero status sweet heart the more you try to pass the more you fail. Embrace your love for the cock. It also unbelievable to me that a person like yourself that post constantly on AICN doesn't weigh in at lest two fiddy minimum. you're what 5'6"?

  • Oct. 23, 2011, 8:43 p.m. CST

    No, no . . . T-Dawg is not Tyrese

    by Turingtestee

I figured we'd learn that he was TINO. I agree that Shane is his replacement. I disagree, the daughter/boyfriend pact would make great TV.

  • Oct. 23, 2011, 11:20 p.m. CST

Holy shit was that a bad episode and next week looks to suck as hard

    by Simpsonian

everyone involved should be embarrassed. fuck.

  • Oct. 24, 2011, 8:50 a.m. CST

simpsonian it was a great episode you fuck!

    by JarJar25

It is people like you that want to derail this series, but that is not going to happen. Why? Well, fortunately AICN doesn't represent the fan base for a show like Walking Dead, nor any other show out there, thank god! Still it is sad to see losers like you keep coming back to feed everyone you bullshit, just because you didn't like it. Here's a clue, if you don't like it, then leave, now!
