Yahoo has posted Disney's latest promo art for their February 17th, 2012 North American release of Studio Ghibli's acclaimed The Secret World of Arrietty. The Hiromasa Yonebayashi directed movie, also known as Arrietty the Borrower, adapts Mary Norton's novel The Borrowers, about the little people secretly living in human dwellings. Studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki wrote the film's script.

Trailer from the UK release, which features a different dub cast than the American.

Why couldn't they simply use some of the original Japanese promotional art? Line drawing animation not good enough for Joe six-pack? Also, what the hell is the kid looking at? Cause he sure ain't looking at Arriety. Is it that difficult to find a good illustrator, Disney?

The original art was deemed too culturally different by disney
by alienindisguise
I'd almost put money on that theory.
-
I guess some folks might be offended - if that isn't too strong a word - by Disney's way of marketing Arrietty in the U.S. But I find the poster artwork beautiful. And on a positive note, let's be glad Disney didn't insist on changing the film's name to something simpler like "Secret World" or even - following their own animation studios' one-word titles - "Secrets."
-
...we don't have more Studio Ghibli on blu ray? Is there even anything remotely on the horizon for 2012?
-
just the tip.
-
why change the name for the 3rd time though?
-
It's creepy thin, man.
-
Reminds me of the littles cartoon, and I loved that cartoon....

People are just bitching for the sake of bitching.

The Littles was "loosely based on" or "ripped off" The Borrowers

They just gave them tails and buck teeth.

Ghibli and Pixar have God damn magicians working there.

here in Dublin, it was a lovely, gentle movie. Bags of atmosphere, not too much action for a Ghibli movie, certainly a lot less frenetic than Ponyo but, as with that movie just as visually dense with every frame packed with character. I can only make a sweeping statement and say, no matter who is doing the US dub, you are going to be missing out on an ace Euro cast, starting with our very own Saoirse Ronan, who was fantastic. You will probably have to wait for the Blu/DVD in couple of months.

Ghibli films make me nostalgic for childhood, even though I was an adult when I watched them.

when are thry going to do a straight up Borrowers adaptation...
by mdk
...instead of just one o these "suggested by" deals? As a little kid, I loved those books.

Seriously, like oldschool 90's Disney posters. Amazing
-
Saw this at the NZ Film Festival this year. Not Ghibli's best (that honor falls to Princess Mononoke IMO) but still a great kids movie and much better than that travesty that was "Tales of Earthsea".......

A gorgeous piece of entertainment, and not to be missed!!

Myself and the missus took the daughter to see this at the local arthouse in our town, in Late August - for me it was a get-out clause from having to endure Mr Popper's Penguins (which my daughter wanted to see); my wife and daughter are massive Studio Ghibli fans, so the choice was easy. And its a superb piece of work, wonderfully played and enough for Ghibli fans to be satisfied, and yet just right for anyone who wants to enjoy something that's without overdoses of saccharine or CGI. I wouldn't perhaps say its as good as Mononoke or Totoro or Spirited Away (my favourite is Mononoke!!), but its certainly up there with the better of them (including Ponyo and Porco Rosso), and is lightyears ahead of the disappointing by-the-numbers Howls Moving Castle. The poster looks fine, it doesn't look that bad (although the original poster was fine as well). I'm curious as to why the title has been changed (its simply Arrietty here in the UK?), but as long as people can see the film, then thats fine really.
-
So, what's it about now?
-
But this Japanese animation does nothing for me. "Howl's Moving Castle", all those movies, just leave me cold and a little baffled at all the praise they get. I'm missing something. The animation is so dry and literal to me and yet the stories are bizarre to the point of being incomprehensible. Billy Crystal is a talking fire....yeah, okay. It's a magic cat bus...whatever you say.
-
Or walking talking wooden puppets? Or flying carpets and magic lamps? Or any number of fantastical things in fantastical worlds? Anyway poster looks pretty awesome to me! I'll be there day 1!
-
beautiful little movie that makes you wish little people lived in your house. Oh Arrietty, i love you.
-
I'd be there.
-
The answer to your question is, "very carefully."
-
...It was called the littles. remember that?
-
What's the hold up? This movie is practically ancient now...
-
Count me as one who doesn't care what or when or how. GHIBLI's work is indescribable. I threw PONYO on for the kids and found myself immersed and emotionally moved with its themes on death and old age that the kids didn't even register. Just showed NAUSICAA to my 11-yr-old daughter -- it DESTROYED her - in a good way, I think. I say more Ghibli all the time. After Pixar's stumble with CARS2, Ghibli may be the last, best, most reliable HOPE.
