RIDDICK 3 is going to be R-rated! Behold a Riddick Necro-Armor Design!!!

Hey folks, Harry here...   I'm very happy to hear that Universal is going the R-rated route on the new RIDDICK film from Twohy & Diesel!   PITCH BLACK is still a film I love quite a lot.  CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK just didn't quite float my boat, though it did have a lot to love.   But between hearing this 3rd film will be an R-rated affair - and then seeing this pretty badass set of armor - both bits leaked from Diesel's Facebook page!  Hope this floors the world.   Really do.

    by david starling

Here in the UK I believe its the equivalent of an '18', but I can't remember the last time I saw an '18'-rated film in the cinema - not do to watering-down of movies, oh no, just that my tastes have veered to other movies.

    YAY for R ratings

    by Quartermass-87

I hope this will be much better than the second flick although I did enjoy the second movie quite a bit. But Pitch Black had an edge to it which is needed...Riddick ain't supposed to be a typical hero he is a bad guy who does heroic things but at the core is still a badass loner...."I absolutely believe in God....and I absolutely hate the fucker".

  • That's one damn good reason to watch How to Make it in America!

So they're basically shooting for Conan the Barbarian in space?

You can't really blame Vin Diesel for wanting to make another one of these movies. This and Fast & the Furious are basically all he's got.

THE FURIONS, NECROMONGERS? Whathefuck?.... It was a bit too much for this franchise... <p> It should have continued the pace of the original only with a more hostile situation.... kinda like Aliens. not all the over blown set pieces and stupid ass characters. Riddick 2 made me feel like I was watching a DUNE wannabe, IT HAD TOO MANY WHO GIVES A SHIT moments.

    I kind of wish...

    by bubcus

the US had a little more to the ratings system. Correct me if I am wrong but from my understanding it is as follows: G / PG / PG-13 / R / NC-17 / X In Canada, ours seems to vary a bit but adds a few: G / PG / PG-13 / M or 14+ / R / 18A / X M=Mature for ages 14+ and tends to include a number of films that would normally be R in the States. It's sort of that "grey area" place that youth love having access to. Matrix, for example, is R in the States but 14+/M in Canada. Blade Runner likewise. On the flipside, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is PG-13 in the States but because Gibson hits the girl, it gets a 18A in Canada. The French comedy Les Visiteurs is G in France and gets hit with an R or 18A in Canada because a woman gets hit with an iron glove at the start. I watched the documentary "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" a few weeks back and my point is that I would love to see a grey area rating added to the US ratings system... that M/14A range where it isn't quite PG-13 and not quite R. So many US R-rated films are in that grey area. So R or not, I hope this next Riddick film is great. I really enjoyed Pitch Black and would love to see more in that universe regardless of rating.

  • Oct. 17, 2011, 4:49 p.m. CST

    velvet_sloane - R rating usually means 15 or 18 in the UK

with PG13 = 12A there have been some exceptions to the rule though. e.g. AvP, Die Hard 4 were PG13 in America but 15 in UK (as were the harder R rated cuts with added CG blood) T3 was an R but was 12A as was the R rated cut of T4 i really hope Promethues gets rated R so a 15 or even 18 in UK (like all the Alien movies were) Ridley Scott has said he wants to scare the shit out of people with Promethues...thats not going to be abit difficult with a PG13/12A cert

  • Oct. 17, 2011, 4:51 p.m. CST

    by Alientoast

AFAIK the "X" rating is extinct so far as the MPAA goes...the highest official rating is NC-17 now in the U.S. Something claiming it is "Rated X" is just marketing gimmick. Most porn stuff is typically unrated and they aren't exactly concerned about getting a slot at the local AMC theater anymore.

    by Andrew Coleman

It's about time this got made. R rating is the only way it could be. Chronicles of Riddick was a mistep to basically make Riddick a sci-fi adventure story... The studio blinked and made it pg-13... Bull shit. So the R is a good thing. You need to keep with the story so Necromongers have to stay... But they can make it very dark. Necro dudes could actually be menacing with the right work of visuals. So count me in. I'm ready.

  • kids and their folks can see the PG13 version, and the hard core can see the R version

    Fucking love it

    by Franck

Yes, I love the idea, and have no fucking idea how good the movie will be. Yes, I love this movie just because of Diesel, the Rating, and the costume. Yes, I am pre-judging it and hope to be right. Yet again, I reserve the right to hate another movie based on the same factors, the only difference is that they make me fucking hate it. So don't tell me what I should judge, or not, by the book or the cover, byt the actor, by the costumes or the director That's just it. whatever makes me like it, whetever makes me hate it. it's my prerogative. Deal with it.

The Chronicles of Riddick wasn't perfect by any means....

    by Mugato5150

No body. Just making a statement.

  • I wish that had been stretched out to two hours... would have made for a much better, far more personal Riddick movie, more in line with the first one. Instead, Twohy tried to make Star Wars/Dune.

  • But it wasn't a remake, re-imagining, reboot, was technically a sequel but only in that it kept the same three characters from Pitch Black. In every other way it was an original sci-fi movie that created a new universe and that alone is worth pursuing. I'm glad they're doing more with it.

  • Oct. 17, 2011, 6:11 p.m. CST

    Saw this on Facebook yesterday

    by ewokstew

and thought Twohy is still going to try and make his elaborate, grandiose sci-fi movie and fail. The guy just can't handle large scale. Although chronicles had some cool stuff in it, it was an utter failure in my opinion. Pitch Black was vastly superior, even as small as it was.

    by Mugato5150

Some of it was cheesy but it had some decent action and it was something a little different (in the sense that it wasn't about Transformers being discovered on the moon). And the video game, which Vin Diesel had a hand in, was pretty bad ass.

I think the 2nd film would have been great if they had stuck with Riddick being chased by mercs and him trying to get at the people sending them after him. Should have made some new villain that owns a merc outfit and was wronged by Riddick before and that's that. Not these stupid outfits and crusades and converting and shit.

Too much obsession with R ratings around here.

    by Happyfat73

That shit should come a distant second to story and character. I'd rather a well-told PG flick than a poorly made R rated one.</p> </p> The problem with Chronicles of Riddick was that it wanted too much to be an "R-rated" Star Wars. It was so pre-occupied with kick-starting an epic saga that it forgot what made Pitch Black so great – a simple story, well told, with interesting characters.</p> </p> I think the series should jettison any attempts at a sweeping epic scope and revert back to a smaller-scale sci-fi with a group of well-rounded characters trying to survive an impossible situation.

    Riddick Movies Should Be Episodic...

    by Acquanetta

...ala Tarzan, Conan, or Indiana Jones. It's a character that lends itself to stand-alone pulp adventures far better than to a larger space epic. But since they're already stuck with the Necromonger goofiness, at least they appear to have a way to acknowledge it without making it the focus. If Riddick is simply stranded on a planet with remnants of his Necro reign, that sounds like a good compromise for fans of both earlier movies.

Re: R-Rating allowing less limitations on story-telling

    by Happyfat73

Unless the themes involve rape/torture or some other taboo subject (or a preponderence of foul language), rating is more dependent on Director decisions. A writer shouldn't be concerned about ratings – the way violence or sex is handled on-screen is in the director's control. There are myriad ways to shoot around sex and violence that can keep the integrity of story and character intact</p> </p> There are, of course, exceptions to this, where explicit sex, violence and language play an intrinsic service to the story, but usually only in the hands of very skilled filmmakers. In the hands of lesser filmmakers, these things are crutches that seek to distract audiences with blood, boobs and F-bombs in order to mask shortfalls in story and character.</p> </p> Mature, intelligent storytelling is very rarely dependent on R-ratings.

Pitch Black and tCoR can't possibly exist in the same universe.

    by Adelai Niska

Pitch Black had an awesome extension of our Earth into the future. You had to hyper-sleep for space travel, Christianity and Islam merged into a single religion, and all signs were that humanity was the only intelligent life out there. I completely bought that universe. Chrionicles of Riddick had people popping all over the galaxy in no time, with actual magic openly on display, and several races of goddamn aliens. It didn't fit into the Pitch Black that I loved. Why they are continuing that shit, I have no idea.

  • Oct. 17, 2011, 9 p.m. CST

Riddick was the WORST thing about Pitch Black...

    by HB_Dad

...Pitch Black was a movie about cool ass aliens killing humans in horrific ways. Riddick was the generic cheese action hero with a predictable twist (ooohhh... he's an ANTI hero). The fact he was your typical badass is overshadowed by his short stalky build and his gay "Right Said Fred" appearance. They then decided to give him glowing eyes and give a stupid back story to it to basically try to say "yes, he's a badass don't you know". Basically, the glowing eyes were nothing more than a cheese plot device to try to make him look spooky but came off as trying too hard. Riddick himself was cheese! He should've been "Rid Of Dick".

    by Crow3711

and it sucked dick. its not his fault. it was wayyyy too ambitious and the story was basically retarded with all those characters populating the universe that had powers and blah blah blah. I barely remember it except the feeling I had that they went way too far, and were given too much freedom. A return to form of pitch black and r-rated and awesomeness, with a little bit of that rich universe thrown in, but more realized, would be quite welcome.

Like Riddick, but HATE that armor

    by AlienFanatic

As others have posted, it's far too ornate and medieval. Riddick is in space, for goodness' sake. Let's see armor that looks like it was designed for: a) Flexibility in combat b) Survival in zero atmosphere c) Camoflage against a starry background Make it black. Make it look like an outer skeleton. Make it accent Vin Diesel's musculature. Give it a cool entry/exit system so that he can don it quickly and look cool doing it. That just looks absurd and makes me think the movie will be all Goth and not futuristic. Bleh.

Loved Pitch Black and you know what? I loved Chronicles of Riddick

    by ShadowVoyd

But it might be the first Director's Cut that I didn't really prefer over the theatrical version. The pacing was killed by the excess. That aside, with Colm Feore, Judy Dench, Karl Urban, Thandie Newton and Linus Roache happening? Absolutely worth it. I thought it was fun, solid sci fi, it expanded the Riddick universe and given the nature of the character, could be dropped when and if required. <P> Which, is what they're apparently doing. We'll have the Necro opening (as really, it's nothing to run away from) and Riddick, being the universe's most lethal hard luck case, will lose it all and go back to basics. I'd say this'll be a great book-end/clean slate set up (as really, I wouldn't turn down another chapter in the story down the line).

Riddick is a franchise; one that Diesel has invested a lot of time and energy in. Chronicles wasn't a masterpiece but it was a welcome entry in the pantheon of epic serialized sci-fi. Don't say shit unless you've seen the anime or played the two EXCELLENT video games which flesh out the story more than you would expect from a shoot-em-up. It's a story worth telling and I'm glad Diesel and Twohy are committed enough to continue to do the telling. Losers

These are the folks that will be buying tickets. You captured lightning in a bottle with Pitch Black in creating a taut sci-fi thriller and one of the most intriguing villianous anti-hero characters on par with Hannibal Lecter. What went wrong? Was it having a budget? Carpenter did his best work with less money. Maybe it's the same with you. I loved Below. A Perfect Getaway. I enjoyed your scripts for Warlock, G.I. Jane, The Fugitive... But, you get $110,000,000 and what happens? You ruined a really cool universe you created for Riddick because you could have big sets, lots of costumed extras, massive battle scenes, CGI... Pitch Black set up a hard-science universe with solar powered gear, cryogenics, slug-throwing weapons, etc. Go back to what works. Slash your budget, toss the bulky script...

A new Riddick movie? And rated R? Now that's what i call good news.

Judi Dench in Chronicles Of Riddick was hot! GILF!!

    by AsimovLives

  • Twohy is a real deal. A true geek making geek movies, and making them good. This guy is for real, he's no fake. Can't wait for a new Riddick movie. I can see in the two previous that both Twohy and Diesel really loved making them, they are works of passion and the love is onscreen.

    Vin Diesel and Riddick

    by Hipshot

Yeah, he tried to make his own Star Wars, but he's got some responsibility here--he had TONS of input into the script, and overreached. Now, I think he's a very cool guy (met him at his house once, talked to him in a conference call once), with a GORGEOUS Mayan baby-mama he keeps totally out of the public eye (which makes me laugh at the "gay" talk), and I'm delighted that he's back. His sister is a cunt, though.

Shocked Diesel is getting another shot at this

    by Beezbo

I guess the thinking is that the Fast & Furious franchise was successfully revived, why not this? But was Riddick ever really that popular?

Liked Pitch Black...Liked/Hated Chronicels fo Riddick

    by Arcangel2020

I really liked Pitch Black, it was one of those films that was kind of a of those films that sounded kind of lame, until you actually saw it and then were left with.."Ok, wow! That was pretty damn decent!"'s still a good film to watch several years later on too! This was also a movie right at that moment where Vin Diesel was just beginning to make a name for himself in Hollywood/Films...if I remember correctly? The first Fast & Furious film also came out around this timeframe as well. Vin Diesel is a pretty decent actor, although a number of his films have been kind of hit-or-miss, witht he exception of the Fast & Furious franchise which am not ashame to admit that I like a lot! :) What really bugged the shit out of my about Chronicles of Riddick? It had a lot of good ideas, potentially good stuff in it (Story background/concept, the look and feel of the way the whole atmosphere/setting of the movie felt (almost had a Warhammer 40K feel to it!) and then there was some of the stuff...a lot of the stuff..that just fell flat, was lame or just left you with a sense of..."What the hell? What were they thinking when they made this long, drawn out sequel to nowheres-ville?! Now I know this particular photo is a concept art piece....and I know that from seeing pics from onset with the actor/actress in costume with no film treatment or special effects added will not give you a sense of what a film is going to be like until the final process.... But let's hope that this third film in the Chronicles of Riddick is wayyyyyy fucking better than the last one! Let's see more of Riddick as the badass criminal convict and anti-hero we say in Pitch Black and that this will be a seriously dark, heavy on the action, wild and crazy Sci-Fi film we deserve!

  • Oct. 18, 2011, 11:34 a.m. CST

    Does anyone fuckin care?

Pitch Black was 'ok'.....a bit stupid but Chronicles was shit. Trying to be something it's intelligent sci fi flick......when in reality it wasn't.

  • Oct. 18, 2011, 11:36 a.m. CST

Believe me WON'T floor the world.

Vin Diesel's just an action star who appears in dumb flicks...and this might look nice but it'll still be dumb.

  • Yet Hollywood can churn out crap like this.

  • Oct. 18, 2011, 11:40 a.m. CST

    And DUNE

What happened to that new Dune movie some people were planning? Seeing as Riddick looked like a Dune rip off in parts they can do this Riddick crap.....but not one of the greatest sci fi novels ever written..........apart from Lynch's version which was from 1984.

    Just bring back Tooms!

    by ImMorganFreeman

Hands down, best character in the second film. Chronicles is interesting in that there are parts that are sci-fi awesomeness, like the mercs and the prison planet, (Probably Twohy's doing) and parts of bizarre fantasy D&D/Dune world (Vin's contribution) with Karl Urban being weird. Still, I'll be there opening night for a new Riddick flick.

    Chronicles of Riddick...YES!

    by sakinnuso

David Twohy and Vin can do no wrong to me. I loved Chronicles of Riddick, bought the DVD, and can't help but watch it whenever it comes on the tube. Pitch Black was a solid little sci-fi horror movie. Chronicles wasn't perfect, but it was a solid new sci-fi franchise that was incredibly fun. By the time it turned to Conan in Space, i was ALL IN. I can't wait for them to continue to the Necromonger/Underverse stuff. The only thing wrong with the movie was the sidekick. "Kill him! Kill The Riddick" That line never gets old ;) Eager for more Twohy sci-fi. A real sequel to The Arrival, please!!

Never saw THE ARRIVAL. Any good?

Pitch Black: Fun high concept Sci-fi. Chronicles, well....

    by Stalkeye

..psuedo epic, underwhelming score and abrupt ending. Oh, and the main baddie was boring. They should have focused more on Tooms. Now he was cool.

  • Oct. 18, 2011, 3:06 p.m. CST

The Arrival was fun but didn't it already spew out a crappy sequel?

  • Oct. 18, 2011, 7:24 p.m. CST

    looks cool

reminds me of Chronicles. So I'm glad they're not completely scrapping that style, since they were talking about making a more Pitch Black type of movie. Because Chronicles was pretty cool if you ask me.

Best Riddick movie: Escape from Butcher Bay!

    by Cruz

This PC game is far and away the best thing featuring Riddick. R-rated, dark, violent, great atmosphere. And it all takes place in a Slam (prison). They released a "remastered" version of it not long ago, with improved graphics. Check it out.

Chronicles of Riddick sold 1.5 MILLION dvds its first DAY alone. The movie ended up turning a tidy profit, not to mention spawning a video game that made a crapload of money, too.
