CHARLIE’S ANGELS, Beaten Into Fifth Place By The CW's VAMPIRE DIARIES, Is ABC’s First Cancell!! WHITNEY Slips Below PARKS AND REC!! Thursday Ratings!!
ABC’s first cancellation of fall goes to “Charlie’s Angels” is the first cancellation by ABC, following the axing of NBC’s “Playboy Club” and “Free Agents,” CBS' "How To Be A Gentleman" and The CW’s “H8R.”
“Charlie’s” fell into fifth place for the first time Thursday night, lagging The CW’s “Vampire Diaries,” NBC’s “Community,” Fox’s “X Factor” and CBS’s “Big Bang Theory.”
The “Angels” reboot, from “Smallville” masterminds Miles Millar and Al Gough (the fellows who also scripted “Shanghai Noon,” “Shanghai Knights,” “Showtime,” “Herbie Fully Loaded,” “The Mummy III” and “I Am Number Four”) was ABC’s lowest-rated scripted series. With “Charlie’s” gone, “Pan Am” and "Body of Proof" are now the ABC series closest to cancellation.

Dammit, Gap Toothed tv boy, you beat me to it! That annoyed me from the get-go.

Does ANYBODY over there proofread these things before hitting SEND???

Didn't they give an order for more eps to Prime Suspect?
by buffywrestling
If that is the case, I feel better about Community's numbers than ever.

It seems if a show doesn't take off in 5 episodes, it's done. Anyone remember Nathon Fillion's DRIVE (with Charles Martin Smith)? 2 Shows? Really?
-
Hot women aren't enough to get a guy to watch TV. That's all I can learn from these ratings.

i was gonna say *ABC’s first cancellation of fall goes to “Charlie’s Angels” is the first cancellation by ABC* is what i was gonna say.
by vulturess
but its already been said as what i was gonna say has already been said.

It is not a bad show at all, and the production budget looks top class. I guess for me its overall subject matter (Pan Am flight stewardesses in the JFK era) just isn't hooking me over the long-run. Maybe the subject matter and setting would have more appeal as a movie?

naggers: women are the majority viewers of broadcast network TV (FOX, CBS, NBC, ABC, CW)...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
That is why there are tons of procedurals, reality shows, and female-led series.

To the .3 that watched Whitney instead of Community...
by Doctor_Strangepork
While you were watching cynical bullshit that you would have been ashamed of watching in 1996 (and still not quite understanding how "a live, studio audience" is digitally sweetened by a computer) we were watching a brilliant, well written half hour, rich in character, substance and style. Perhaps next week you should join us. And then turn off Whitney because you simply don't need to be told when to laugh anymore.

The success marker of new shows is, will they get a full season order.<p>So far, Full Season Orders: <i>Revenge, Suburgatory, Hart of Dixie, Secret Circle, Ringer, New Girl, Up All Night, Whitney, and 2 Broke Girls</i><p>The list has been growing this week as daily ratings are released. I figure the uptick on <i>Person of Interest</i> ratings should secure it a full season. My favorite new network show <i>Prime Suspect</i> keeps going the wrong way, and will likely be my annual :(
-
got an order of six additional scripts. That could change.
-
I recall last season that NBC renegged on the full season order for Chase. They cut back 22 to 18 episodes.
-
Those ratings numbers make perfect sense. I'm not gonna say I don't like some crappy TV, but the women I know are much more likely to watch some garbage just because some actor or another are in it. Minka Kelly is extremely hot, but not enough to get me to watch Charlie's Angels. My roomate, however, chose to watch A Gifted Man solely because of Patrick Wilson.

Minka Kelly's Acting, Rachel Taylor forced to do American accent--killed this dead
by chromedome
In the first ep, aside from instant horizontal satellite imagery on an ipad, the next most horrible thing was Minka Kelly's horrible acting: she was actually SMILING as she described the murder of her parents.... After that was an inane showrunner's decision that Rachel Taylor's character could not be Australian. She lost her natural speech rhythm and it felt forced and fake. I didn't expect much at all from this show, but even my lowest expectations were too high.
-
It's a really good show, they really need to move it away from those NBC ratings kryptonite sitcoms. Put it on Wednesdays pairing it with SVU or something.
-
I'm not so sure that women are the primary viewers of broadcast tv, but women 25 to 49 with a fairly sizeable income are the primary target demo of the broadcast networks. The CW skews for younger female demos while it's sister network CBS targets the 32 and above.
-
and far be it from me to defend them, but 3 to 5 shows & your cancelled? What happened to the old network practices of changing timeslots or re-tooling? Cripes, tv land classics like Mash, & Cheers never would've made it w/today's network mentality.
-
All the characters are depressed. Who is this supposed to appeal to? And I actually think she's funny, just not in this show surrounded by this cast. Prime Suspect deserves a better lead in.
-
Except I think it goes beyond simply "bad." It felt almost like that Jason Schwartzman clip that was going around that people thought was an actual TV show, but couldn't believe something that bad would be put on the air.
-
Good to see quality rewarded for once. It is the best new show of the year!
-
Show 13 is the son getting murdered that we saw at the beginning of the season. The show runner says that the rest of the season revolves around the trial of his murderer.
-
at midseason
-
I watched the pilot solely for Minka, but she could not get me to stick around. It was really terrible. Down with Whitney! It is bad. Save Community and save Pan Am!

And so far it doesn't seem to be working.

Good to see Community rise after what many considered a "weak" episode last week.
by ShelbKis
I have yet to see a really weak Community episode (although many are less than their average, still better than every other sitcom). I hope/think Community does a 2.0 next week from the buzz of this week's episode. It was amazing. I watched it again twice last night after it aired. Top 3 episode of the show so far. I was worried with the direction they were taking (less "big" episodes, more "normal" ones) because the show is all about taking the normal "big" sitcom episode and flipping it on it's head. This week was not normal for any sitcom. Hell, this would've been a "gimmick" episode for X-Files (immediately reminding me of the episode with Scully getting shot in the bank robbery being relived over and over) but they executed it flawlessly. They had character development for the audience without it even MEANING anything in the characters real storyline. Hilarious from top to bottom. Bottle episode that wasn't. I think they get their Emmy nod this year for it. I hope NBC believes the show can still crack the mainstream audience. Move it to 9:30!

The only way that charlies angels works is when its packed out with casting couch bunnies from the San Fernando Valley. Its like a porno without the sex in it. Very simple formula. A 12 year old boy hitting puberty could have written this stuff in his sleep. The female leads chosen simply werent good looking enough to carry the show. Daddys across the world didnt watch Charlies Angels in the 70's for the plots... ABC's executives seem to be suffering from the same creative inertia as NBC at the moment. Very very strange.

YES I do remember "Drive" and it DID get more than 2 episodes.. FIVE if I remember correctly.. and I was damn well HOOKED. Still HOPING for a DVD or BD disc release, but none yet.. Amazon has SIX episodes for sale on their site.. I've thought about it. But.. MOST people knew Nathan Fillion through "Firefly".. I actually knew him FIRST, really (aside from his stint on "Buffy") from this. With Amy Acker, the FAKE "Bandit" Brian Bloom, Dylan Baker and Emma Stone.. I DUG the premise.. and am sooo soo MAD we never got to see the season 2 that they teased with Eliza Dushku behind the wheel of a BIG RIG inspired by Speilberg's "Duel". But.. I know.. he wasn't being literal with the TWO comment on "Drive" but it is true.. IF a show doesn't perform, they don't give the show time to develop.. I am SHOCKED that FOX's "Raising Hope" got to a second season.. and I am GLAD I found something to fill the void left by "My Name is Earl". can't say I saw ANY of the cancelled shows, except for the FIRST episode of "How to be a Gentleman" mostly because of Hornsby and Dillion.. but it was by far NOT the worst sh*t-com I saw THIS year.. that Kat Dennings train wreck is AWFUL.. but she does have a BIGGER rack and a leaked nude picture scandal, so it will probably run for FIVE years.. which is too bad, she's actually a pretty good actress, but that show ("Two Broke Girls") is AWFUL.. even worse than the cancelled "Mad Love" which had a MUCH stronger cast. Then again as much as I LOVE Zoey Deschanel I wasn't overly impressed with FOX's "The New Girl" either.

I think the mix up here is that Drive was only given two weeks to prove itself, but in that time got off four episodes (sort of) before being cancelled. They showed the first two as a feature length pilot on the sunday, the 3rd episode the next night on the monday, and the last episode they showed the following Monday before cancelling it the very next day on the tuesday morning. (The last two episodes produced were never shown on broadcast tv..) So yeah, Kinda disgraceful. 8 days is definitely not enough time for good word of mouth to pass around and get people watching.. And judging by the first 6 episodes, it was a good show. Certainly very different from anything else on at the time. Sigh! Although I don't mind Castle, I'd rather have had Nathan Fillion doing four seasons of Drive. Heck, if I had my way he wouldn't be on TV and instead would have been cast as Captain America, (And I'll bet Joss Whedon now secretly wishes this was the case as well..) And yeah I know Fillion's Canadian. But hey, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Professor X, and Magneto are all being played by British actors. And last I checked Hugh Jacjman wasn't the canadian that Wolverine was supposed to be. So I don't really think it would have mattered. They can cgi all the muscles they want onto Chris Evans, but I still don't buy him as Cap. (Maybe a 'Bucky' Cap, but not Steve Rogers..) He looked kind of weak in the Avengers trailer trying to intimidate Robert Downey Junior's Stark. But I think Nathan could have pulled that off, and been more believable at leading an Avengers team the way Cap does in the comics.. Another great casting that could have been..

Why IS every OTHER word in your POST in capitals? It MAKES for highly ANNOYING reading.
-
This was a great episode which should get some buzz. So it's a shame that next week's episode is a repeat and won't really benefit from said buzz. The next new episode is the Halloween episode, which should be as awesome as ever. I'm not sure if having two kinda-anthology episodes in a row is such a great idea, though.
-
all those characters you listed and Cap is none of them have the word "America" in their names. No way anyone but a born and raised US actor gets cast as Captain America.
-
Intellectually I know that..but damn, do I wish he'd been born in the states! LOL! Still kind of annoyed that they couldn't find an older american actor, with a little bit of gravitos to play the part. Chris Evans just struck me as lazy casting. i.e "Well he was the most popular guy in that Fantastic Four movie, so the fan boys already like em. Let's cast him!"
-
You've got it backwards. Networks don't change the timeslots of shows that are struggling in their current timeslot in hopes that they'll do better in a different timeslot, they change the timeslots of shows that are doing well in their current timeslot in hopes that they'll do worse so they can have an excuse to cancel them.
-
I'm not paying with my time to watch dolts practice how to make a TV series. <p> It's the big league. <p> You fail, you're out. <p> Don't run any part of a series until the scripts are perfect. <p> You can't handle the job, get out of the way. Others are ready to assume command.
