MORTAL KOMBAT 3: DOMINATION...

Published at:  Feb 04, 2000 5:49:33 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with... the glorious news about.... MORTAL KOMBAT 3.... Joy... If perhaps they actually get a script of some sort... if they compose long fight scenes that are made up of a continuous shot of major ass-kicking... well then I'd be a very excited happy boy to some moderate degree. It's just sad when there is better fight choreography in the video game than in the movie. Ya know? Sigh...

Just wanted to let you know about something you maybe dont get much notice on, but MORTAL KOMBAT 3 DOMINATION is set to film primarily in London. New Line and Laurence Kasanoff are apparently known to prefer the move to England for principal photgraphy because they were impressed with the brief time they spent filming MKA there. It will be closer to other european locations they intend to film in aswell. I cant say in what capacity I am involved in the movie biz but I want to mention MK first because Kasanoff has openly stated before in various interviews and the official website (mortalkombat.com) that ANNIHILATION was not what they wanted and DOMINATION will have a more carefully constructed script and will be similar to the first movie, which was actually quite good and surprised !
many back in 95. Returning heros will obviously be LIU KANG, RAYDEN, SONYA and JAX. Ray Park is tipped to return to MK and play REIKO (from the MK4 video game), Linden Ashby will return as JOHNNY CAGE (somehow, he was killed in MKA). SONYA is rumored to DIE and the long running SUB-ZERO v SCORPION battle (JJ Perry and Chris Cassamassa) will now find its winner in this movie, my money is on Scorpion. Cassamassa wasnt in MKA becuase he was Clooney's fighting double in Batman & Robin but he will again play the yellow ninja. More news will follow as it comes in.

I was never a fan of the original Mortal Combat film or it's sequel, it seemed like a wanna-be Hong-Kong film but if they're proposing a third sequel, then get Corey Yuen to direct, Yuen-Woo-Ping to choreograph the fight scenes and Cynthia Rothrock because she's such a cool martial artist and she could beat the crap out of the original cast from the first 2 films.
Now THAT would a Mortal Combat film worthy of the game. But it'll probably turn into another cheese-fest with Christopher Lambert.

Just when I thought that there were no fresh ideas coming out of Hollywood, thank God New Line Cinema climb the pack of obscurity to once again deliver an outstanding product of both critical acclaim and public appeal. A film that walks the fine line between strong character development and an evenly-paced plot. A film with such a large fan base and respected brand name that without any marketing could easily capture the imagination of every human being on the planet. Mortal Kombat 3. New Line Cinema, I salute you.

Another MK flick? Sure, why the fuck not? After all, Hollywood makes every other time and money wasting piece of name dropping shit any no talent hack hands over to them, why not this one as well. Look, the second MK film sucked the fuzz off a dead llama's testes (I'm still pissed about Disney's 'Groove' thing!), and the first film was only decent. If you're going to do another one, then by Rayden get it the fuck right! No more stories about Liu Kang learning to fulfill his destiny, no more stories about Sonya learning to abandon her arrogance and work with others, and for God's sake, no more stories about a princess trying to free her evil spirit possessed mother who isn't even possessed at all (now that was real shitty!). Here's how it should be done: Go back to the very beginning, ancient Outworld and ancient Earth, a long time ago at the first Mortal Kombat tournament. Imagine it, hordes of the emperor's evil henchmen raiding villages and killing everybody, when out of the death and destruction comes Kung-Lao and a small group of dedicated fighters, who, accompanied by Rayden (please without the buzz cut!) proceed to kick ass all over the place. Make it like THE beginning of the whole saga, the ancient gods fighting each other, humans killing each other left and right to support their cause, a final climactic showdown that results in, here's the unexpected twist, the earth realm's first loss of Mortal Kombat! See, let the bad guys win once in a while and you get something no one expects and everybody loves. I'm no movie writer so maybe I have nothing even resembling clue one about how the movie should go, but I do know this, and it's something everybody in Hollywood knew at some glorious point: If you're going to make a movie, make it right. In this case, give people great special effects, a spirited script, a shit load of ass kicking, and an ending so unformulaic, no one could see it coming! Of course that's just my opinion. If anybody disagrees I'll be happy to have an intelligent discussion with you about it. Any idiot who just wants to bitch and disagree for disagreement's sake, without anything close to an intelligent arguement, well you can suck my moist hairy ass! See you in Outworld!

Yes, just what we all need--another MK movie. The first one I found mildly entertaining back when I first saw it; the second one was unutterable crap. And now a third? Wasn't the STREET FIGHTER travasty enough of a fiasco? And ya know what's interesting--THE MATRIX has since shown how an intelligent movie of this type could be done! I agree with Darthevil, there are much better ways to spend money. Like burning it, giving it to bill gates, or using it to buy back the souls of those responsible for these scripts from Satan, since it is obvious he has had a hand in the Mortal Kombat series.

And whoever things that the 1st Mortal Kombat was a good movie must be removed from the gene pool, to prevent degradation of the rest of the human race.

    Darth Bond & Dreamcast

    by emperor-1

Gee, let's see how quickly we can slam the next Sega product.

Good plan, Darth B. Let's give complete control of what content we are allowed to play to one company, so our video games can be as bland as studio movies and commercial music. GOOD IDEA!!

I was a manager at a software etc, store when the Atari, 3DO, Saturn, Playstation showdown happened. I saw retailers stop supporting competing systems, I saw the death of the 3DO, Jaguar, and eventually, the Saturn. At the time I owned every system that was out (totalled more than 7), and was not particularly loyal to any of them.

But I saw Sony PAY SNK more than double the projected income from domestic sale of King of Fighters '95 to NOT release that game for Saturn in the US, as it was far superior to the Playstation version. (The Saturn version utilized both Cartridge AND CD media, and contained 100% of the animation frames from the arcade original, the Playstation wasn't capable of dual media, and was missing 60% of the animation frames.) No wonder that KOF 96,97, and 98 was only released for Playstation in the US.

MY point is, let's not give Sony the power over video games that they now have over movies and music. Unless we all want nothing more than to choose between Batman 45 or Mariah Carey's 40th birthday album.

There is a reason that independent music and film is better than that controlled by monopolistic corporations, and we needn't get shafted again.

Of course, we won't know the difference anyway, just like we just HAD to have VHS instead of Beta (beta had 75 more lines of resolution and much higher color depth, and is the standard for video tape the world over except America and the 51st state, Canada).... Saturn was a viable unit in Japan until Dreamcast was released, because in Japan, games matter, not what your neigbor has.

Let's also realize that Tekken is a copy of Virtua Fighter, so even if you like Tekken 3 better than VF3, there wouldn't even be a Tekken had Sega not invented the 3D fighter first.

    Emperor OUT.

Soldier sucked the big one though, and MK1 was adequate as best. Anderson is a good director who needs a decent project to show off his abilities...hopefully some day he'll make his many critics eat his words. Oh, and don't rule out Dreamcast...so far, it's managed to avoid all the Saturn/3D0/Jaguar pitfalls, and has some great games...check out Soul Caliber (kicks Tekken's ass any day) and Sonic Adventure (easily comparible to Mario 64)...

    by angry

I personally loved the first Mortal Kombat. It was cheesy, it never took itself too seriously, and it had a load of ass kicking on cool ass sets with one of the best movie soundtracks out there. I'm not talking about scorewise, I'm talking about all the music they chose to put to the fights. (sweet sweet industrial/techno music!) The choreography was pretty sweet, and the CGI was really good for the time (remember, this was more than 5 years ago!) The sequel though. WOAH! That was bad. I saw it on opening night, and there were two people in the movie theatre dressed up as Sub Zero and Scorpion. Wow, they look so downhearten when leaving the theatre. That was such a bad movie. Not as bad as Street Fighter or Double Dragon, but... BAD.

    MK3 and other things...

    by kolobos rexx

HEY KIDDIEES! This is Hellknight. Altought the idea of a third MK film is intriguing, I really hope it is more than an extended epilogue to the first film, like "MK:ANNHILATION" was. I don't really know why if a video-game film must be made, why can't they be like "Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie"? This flick ROCKS!! Great art, action that makes "The Matrix" look like "Alvin and the Chipmunks", and a kick-ass, but limited, soundtrack with Korn, KMFDM, Silverchair, Alice in Chains... Not to mention a story and some friggin' character-development! SEE this film and tell me it doesn't kick! As far as "Event Horizon", well, brother, it couldn't have been much worse, in my opinion. A weird rip-off of "The Black Hole", with elements pirated blatently from "Hellraiser", "The Shining"... It was a bit scary, but it also had a lot of plot-holes and that line, "We have such sights to show you" was DIRECTLY from "Hellraiser"! It could have been pretty good, if they had played up the idea that the ship's design was from that hellish dimension, which was probably influencing the doc to build the thing! Why else have a ship that looked so... weird? Certainly not pure function! THEN you might have had something! Unfortunately... As a side-note, I liked "The Matrix" as much as anyone, but it sure wasn't totally original! Cross "Tron" and elements of "The Terminator", throw in "Dragonball Z"-styled fights, and there ya go!... A very basic analysis, but still!... -Hellknight2000@hotmail.com

No more Mortal Kombat: that died off long ago. We need a movie based on a game by SNK! I know there have been anime on it, but a live action movie would be great.

Perhaps a Fatal Fury movie, with Dolph Lundgren playing Geese Howard, and Ray Park as Billy Kane. I have no idea who would be Terry Bogard...

Or, a King of Fighters movie could be made.. now that would make a great story. Ancient demon threatens the world... a man who can control flames... and a guy and girl who have violent "Orochi Blood Riots"...

First off let me say that MK3 was one of my favorites out of the series(Sektor rules)so I'm pretty excited over this one. But I need to say two things.
    1. MK is the ONLY succesful(sp?) video game-movie thus far.
    2. MKA didn't follow MK's legacy and isn't worth the initials.
Quite frankly what I'm looking for is fast-paced battles with that mix of martial arts and pure whup-ass that MK made famous, along with great FX. (reptile's morph and Sub Zero's ice effects in particular)But it HAS to have a good plot. I want it to look like the post-apocalyptic setting MK3 and 4 had. Hopefully this won't join Mario Bros and Street Fighter in the bargain bin

If it's more like the first one I don't want to see it

    by bryan

I think people who prefer the original Mortal Kombat to the sequel are insane. It's not like the first one is a genuinely good martial arts movie, or horror movie, or fantasy, or thriller, or anything else. It was just "not as bad as I expected," but if you go back and watch it again you will find it hard to sit through most of what occurs between Scorpion fights. The sequel, on the other hand, lets loose all pretense of trying to be a sensible movie and goes buckwild. The fight choreography is FAR superior, more acrobatic and ridiculous. And the plot seems to be made up as it goes along, making it a lot more interesting than the hackneyed, slow moving supernatural Enter the Dragon pastiche of the original. It seems like every three to five minutes some ridiculous robot man or crazy witch lady jumps out and starts fighting, and that's the magic of it! My favorite part is when Liu Kang turns down Jade's sexual advances, so then the ominous guitar music begins and they start fighting! It's hilarious stuff. Okay, maybe the monsters aren't as funny as Goro (who looks like he could be defeated by an opponent who just runs in circles until he tips over) but still, it's a far more entertaining movie.

Instead of making another MK flick, why doesn't someone bring The Storm Riders to U.S. screens? That was a much better version martial arts/fantasy genre than either of the MK flicks (although the first one was kinda enjoyable, while the second tried too hard to top itself and fell completely flat). BTW, isn't there a TV show someone needs to finish first? Granted, the concept of Shao Khan winning and killing everyone was pretty funny, but the end was a bit unsatisfying.

I admit that MK: Annihilation sucked but give these guys a break. the only reason it sucked was because Ed Boon and John Tobias (the creators of the video game) weren't that involved with it. half of u people aren't even talking about the movie so i duno why u dimwits are here...and the other half (with the acception of one) are narrow minded @$$holes who wouldn't give your moms a penny if u had a billion dollars. those who think MK the movie sucked...please go somewhere. i guess you're too immature to enjoy a good movie when u see one. for those who thought MK: Annihilation rocked...umm, just because they took a script from the power rangers and took what was left of the original movie's budget and crammed it together, doesn't mean it's a good movie. i duno why yall are baggin on MK in the first place...Ed Boon and John Tobias came up w/a good sci fi/action/martial arts video game that made a good movie. YOU try to make a video game and a movie and THEN you can say what you like. But I have faith in MK: Domination because they said they were going to make it more like the original...Ray Park (Darth Maul) is in it and so is Linden Ashby (the ORIGINAL Johnny Cage). Todd McFarlane (creator of Spawn) said that what people should do if they're going to make a sequel is take what was good from the original and keep it. Take what was bad from the original and make it better and THEN some. I'm hoping that's what they're going to do...and for those who are posting negative, uneducated remarks about the sequel...please go back to 3rd grade and learn to think before you act or make up your mind. Just because YOU don't want to see the next MK movie doesn't mean you have to ruin it for the people that DO!

    MK3

    by apple jax

Now, I loved Mortal Kombat the movie back in '95, but when I laid my eyes on Mortal Kombat Annihilation, I was horrified. They managed to squeeze in every character from the series into one movie. Mortal Kombat 3 would be great if they stuck with people from the original. They need to bring back directer Paul Anderson first off. Next, if Rayden is in it, then Christopher Lambert has to be in it definately. It also needs to be more surrealistic like Mortal Kombat 1. It'll need that moaning monk music that gave you that creepy feeling. It needs to have the incredible action sequences as well.
Why can't they just call it Mortal Kombat 3? Why do they have to have a little tagline deal? Domination? That sounds stupid. Same with Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Why couldn't they just call it Mortal Kombat II like in the game? Oh well. I just hope it actually works out and maybe, just maybe we'll have another Mortal Kombat 1 on our hands.

Martial Arts has come a long way...

    by the jester

You people who are worried about the action in MK: Domination...i don't think u have to worry about it since the first MK movie. Jackie Chan and Jet Li have introduced new ways of fighting. Both Mortal Kombat fight scenes were very toned down compared to Jackie Chan's fighting. But you have to remember that both MK movies were out before Jackie really hit BIG in America. And Jet Li is still on his way...so i'm hoping they'll learn from Jackie Chan and Jet Li and make their fight scenes more like they're actually fighting (like in Mortal Kombat) rather than dances and fake looking moves (Scorpion flipping on Sub-Zero when Sub-Zero tried to flip on Scorpion in MK: Annihilation)...i also hope Scorpion gets more screen time because he was awesome in the original Mortal Kombat.

Remember what the Highlander series went through?

    by hammer2fall

Compare the rumor of an MK3 movie to what happened with Highlander 1-3. The first one ruled, the second one absolutely stank, and number three, while not as great as it potentially could have been, was considerably better than number two. Same thing with The Crow. I expect something similar with MK3, but my money's on number 3 being better than "better than number 2". Though at this point I'm a little ashamed to admit it, but I enjoyed MKA the first time I saw it, but as I saw it again and again, I saw what all was wrong with it. I'm hoping Larry and the boys can correct those mistakes with MK3. Here's a suggestion...bring back Christopher Lambert as Rayden, then cast Adrian Paul as Fujin! THE HIGHLANDERS RULE!!!

    And as for Michael DeLuca...

    by hammer2fall

I am aware that some jabroni named Michael Deluca said that there is no MK3 to be made. But did any of you bother to, oh, I dunno, LOOK INTO IT ANY and see if there was any credibility in that!?! I checked the IMDB to see who the hell DeLuca is...all he's ever been in is a labor foreman for the X-Files...nothing mentioning MK or Newline. So how the fuck would he know there's no MK3!? At this point, no one on the Talkback forums does! Until I see an OFFICIAL (notice the capitol letters) announcement saying otherwise, I still see MK3 in the future, and I salute the guy who delivered the news that there will be.
On another note, screw the lot of you who think negatively of a chance to make a GOOD video game film. Screw you, and the horses you rode in on!

    NO MORE VIDEO GAME MOVIES!!!

    by nihl

MK was an ok film to watch if drunk, as it was a series of kung fu (note lower case letters) fights linked together by some thing almost, but really nothing like a plot.

MKA was an emasculated afternoon cartoon.

Street fighter-what were they thinking they could have had some up and coming Hong Kong action guy for ryu at a fraction of JCVD's price and it might have been entertaining.

Playstation 2 might be good but Nintendo is releasing a new console and so is Microsoft (!) this year so the era of sony as the video game king might go the way of Nintendos.

HARRY READ THIS! Music kicks it, but the script can suck it

    by the dark warrior

Yeah MK3. Video Games to movies, not all that great. The movie has the same problem the MK3 ULTIMATE had... ... to many people. Focus on just 1 or 2 (Liu Kang 1 Raiden 2 ??? 3). Make this movie R, I mean when the game came out it wasn't ment for young kids. I really want to see the blood and guts of the game. I'd also like to see something like a goodguy vs goodguy (maybe one can be under a spell). Make the bad guys really evil and dominating. The show MK Conquest was okay, so get the good looking women. Also get a good writer to develop the characters (maybe me) and have Liu Kang do the flying kick. Also provide a logical reasoning behind some stuff (Flying kick: Liu learns the power of wind from Fujin and bam!) I'd also bring the 4 armed Kintaro from MK2. I really want to see FATATILIES (I mean really show the torsos being ripped in 2, heads falling off). I'd also like to see some big names, (Jean Claude Van Damm as Jarek).

HARRY RECOMEND ME TO WRITE MK3 to New Line as MK3 will be a good movie (Hell I'll have Leonardo DeCaprio get killed, that'll draw a crowd)

The Formula to a Better MK movie...

    by the jester

Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) as Liu Kang, Jackie Chan as Kung Lao, Steven Seagal as Rayden, and Jet Li (Lethal Weapon 4, BlackMask) as Sub Zero. The Wachowski Brothers (the Matrix) for the directors. Jackie Chan and Jet Li as the fight cooreographers. Ha Nguyen (Mortal Kombat) for the costume designer. I don't know who the music would be done by, but techno/dance/house music would suit the fight scenes. Special Effects done by Idustrial Light and Magic (Star Wars, Episode 1: Phantom Menace, Terminator 2). Tell me what you all think!

    Hammer2Fall Is Funny

    by mrbeaks

DeLuca is an exec at New Line. If he says they're not making another MK, then they're *really* not making another MK.

    DeLuca...isnt he that...

    by netlon

Oh...wait...I remember, he's that smalltime producer who did some xfiles gigs. Well you're right, who's he anyway? What does he know...oh yeah, and there's that Lord of the Rings flic he's producing, hah even the studios don't take HIM serious, giving him just $190 million dollar to play around with, and who can blame them? He's has only produced about half of their films...I agree fully, he's not worth mentioning...

    You people suck.

    by hammer2fall

All right, all right, I can tell when I'm not being taken seriously...but consider what I've found out. I looked further into what was said about Lord of the Rings and all that...Michael Deluca's is NOWHERE to be seen. SO how am I supposed to believe he's got anything to do with MK? I even tried looking to see who's on the exec list at NewLine...not a thing. Sorry, people, I'm still not convinced. Bitch all you like, but I still wanna see something from Larry Kasanoff himself...not some random message put on a user's message board who's email address happens to end with "@newline.com". Besides, even if DeLuca IS an exec at NewLine, which for I know he could be, who's to say he even knows about the MK project? Not every stinkin' producer works on the same project, y'know! Say it's wishful thinking if you want...I don't give a crap what any of you say. Well, except Harry, he's the only intelligent one here...
