Showtime & Netflix to team with Fox for a new Arrested Development season? Is the movie finally becoming a reality?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. What makes this round of “OMG! Arrested Development is coming back!?!?” different than the last few dozen? Well, instead of Jason Bateman saying “Yeah, Mitch Hurwitz is writing and I want to do it. Maybe someday…” we have the entire cast and Hurwitz appearing on a panel at the New Yorker Festival giving a specific plan.
That plan is to have a limited 10 episode run before jumping into a movie version. All the cast is onboard, with Bateman tweeting “It’s true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie. Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early ’13. VERY excited!”
Hot on the heels of that comes a Deadline story saying that 20th Century Fox TV is talking with Netflix and Showtime to team up to make that series a reality.
I know it’s easy to be cynical with an Arrested Development return as we’ve been burned many times before, but this feels real to me. If you want to see the show return, drop the cynicism. I guarantee you the money guys who would make this a reality are watching fan reaction and if all they see is rampant cynicism that might hurt the possibility of this actually happening.
If you think it’s a bad idea and don’t want to see the world revisited by the cast and creative team, then by all means voice that opinion, but if you want to see it don’t be a grinch. This is only good news.

Thoughts?

Does Will Arnett have time for this, with his new show and all?
by wackybantha
I'm sure it's been done before, but will he be available to portray Gob full-time?
Of course, if his current show with Christina Applegate is doing poorly, then it's a moot point. -
Especially since they all pretty much have successful careers... To all be coming back for such an awesome show is a fantastic thing.
-

Will Arnett's new show is struggling. I bet it will be canceled.
by mahaloth
But I'm sure he'd find a way to get involved, anyway.
-
This thing would be schedule like an extra long movie shoot, I'm assuming... 10 weeks for the 10 episodes, then 6 weeks for the movie. I'm assuming the episodes would have movie quality in terms of production and everyone will just be paid double.
-
and won't he be again- since he demands tons of money- what after the best movie in the history of the universe- Scott Pilgrim and all...
-
Great news, been waiting so long for this.

Not to mention during their respective show's off-seasons.
by iamnicksaicnsn
If Up All Night gets a second season, I doubt they will have an issue shooting around it.
-
not only the movie, but to be getting 10 episodes of the show to go along with it. Obviously if Hurwitz is showing up on stage and announcing it like this then they're far enough along to not need the fans viral help, but if there's anything we could do, this could be the greatest "fan support leading to a follow up" since Boondock Saints 2 was green lit thanks to the high sales of the Boondock Saints 1 dvd rerelease
-

Will they have enough story to fit 10 eps and a movie?? Excited to find out
by iamnicksaicnsn
It's a little overwhelming to think of the prospect, but here's hoping Mitch can bring the magic (which is to say somehow get all of the writers - especially from Season 1 and 2 - back).

There were many half-buttocked theories about why the show was cancelled first-go-around, to whit; 'maybe America just doesn't want a comedy about these rich and self interested people', etc.
I dunno if thats true, I just know it was really funny and the baffling marriage of David Cross & Portia Degeneres (nee Di Rossi) cracked me up.
And Will Arnett has never been better.
And that George Michael joke just never stops being funny.

...and "paid double" means paid double the union minimum they would've asked got. Except for Cera, it seems this was a vanity project for everyone and they would've taken nothing to do it. They'll get paid double because of the extra pay from the TV show, but because they'd ask for it.
Except for Bateman, it seems everyone needs the up in their career anyway. Cera's movies have bombed lately, Arnett's done a bunch of failed shows and the rest of the cast have been bit players in other stuff at best. Bateman has been on fire, even with some missteps but he's the biggest success story out of AD so far really. -
From the NYT coverage of the announcement:
By way of apology, Mr. Hurwitz also said that while he and the “Arrested Development” team had intimated in the past that the movie wasn’t coming together because Mr. Cera – who has since been propelled into leading roles in films like “Superbad” and “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” – was standing in the way, this had all been an inside joke gone wrong.
“I kind of was perpetuating a little thing, like, wouldn’t it be funny if Michael Cera was the holdout. Let’s put that out there. And Michael had that Andy Kaufman thing. And then it really turned ugly, quickly. So I really just have to say, for those of you that have been following this saga, Michael’s always been great.” -
...wouldn't really factor in since it says they'd be shooting this in the summer of '12. He'd be on break whether his show was cancelled or not.
-
...who wonder where the extra money they were asked to pay (for a service that had been fairly underpriced to that point, admit it) was going. This would help a little to get Netflix back in good graces.
Can't defend the Qwikster thing. Seriously, I get why they're spinning off the DVDs: so they can slowly kill them. But the too-sudden news coupled with the horrible, horrible Qwikster name? Guhhh.
All they had to do was call it "Netflix Classic" or "Netflix by Mail" or "Discflix" or "Netflix Retro" and it would have gone over much, MUCH better. -
I always loved them. *hugs Netflix*
-
The Cera holdout was a joke. It wasn't real. This has been confirmed by Mitch Hurwitz. Every single main cast member is on board.
-
It does seem clearly one of the better approaches.
Hopefully this means they basically found to do the movie they want, they need to have the show have left off in a different place.
Short seasons a good way to do that.
The issue comes, timing with international markets.
They really would need to get schedually and fast tracking done right. -
They just added Tron Legacy and The Cleveland Show, two things I never made time for in their regular forms (and from what I hear, it was a wise choice.) Gotta love it. Plus like 500 hours of Star Trek TV and every South Park & Futurama made through 2010. As soon as they add season 2 of Archer I'll be in heaven.
-
I tried watching a couple episodes and it just seemed like a hyper-cut, flashback ridden over narrated exorcise in self indulgence. I failed to laugh even once. 'shakes head'
-
promised myself i would only crack open the DVDs again when this movie became a reality....cant wait to revisit the BLUTHS!!
-
I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized that Netflix was undercharging for their survice. Unlimited streaming for 8 bucks is still a steal. Just wait when more companies do it and the price goes up for it anyway.
That said, this makes me giddy beyond all belief, I better start watching the run over again. -

I've never seen Arrested Development and this news gets me fucking excited
by xen11
I want great series that were canceled to come back with full cast and writers and showrunner. It's fucked up that a really great fucking series (and there's loads of them) gets canceled because Nielsen didn't find it in its sampling to have the numbers for it. It's bullshit and it needs to fucking stop.
Continue series that need to tell their story.
Seasons should be short and sweet like the British do it. There's no need for 22 episodes. Sure that's great, but budgeting these things would be more realistic if you did a nice 8-13 episode season. I know the 22-ep run is for syndication reasons and reaching those high episode numbers, but what's really important is DVD sales and completing a series and its story so people will want to buy a full series set because it means something and its not just a severed story that got cut off at the midsection.
And bring back Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The best thing scifi and its gets ignored by AICN - the supposed geeky site for all things geek. -
I too loved T:TSCCs. But the finale was a perfect ending to the series and even makes sense with all of the other films.
Careful what you wish for! -
Oct 02, 2011 11:06:27 PM CDT
And ditch Nielsen. Air series on something like Netflix where you get an accurate viewer count. Why do I have to think of everything?

by kbarber29
-
I agree. But, if you could get the cast back together (they've all expressed their interest and agreement to do a continuation) and get the showrunner back with some of the writers, then why not?
TSCC was a planned four season story with a possible fifth season (I'm guessing aftermath of the end result).
There were beginning of story threads that were leading to an endgame. It's basically a novel that got cut off at its midpoint.
I too think the finale is perfect and would not want a bastardized version of TSCC (that's why I want some kind of series/ seasons and not a crappy little movie).
There was so much greatness left to be shown and told and explored.
And Josh Friedman (showrunner / head-writer) is a must because its all his plan, its his show. -
Quite.
-
There's always that one person, and you're it! Congrats.
-
When the screenwriter started writing the screenplay for the movie, he realized that he had so much to tell for each character in the 5 year gap/absence to start off their reunion. It wouldn't be until halfway past the movie until everyone got their backstories told and the reunion would happen, so each episode will tell the story of a character.
-
a huge mistake.
-
Please beat the shit out of the fucked up system and let others like you know whatever it is that you did to resurrect your series.
-
If this is true it will be the thing that gets me to re-subscribe to Showtime. And Netflix. And movie theaters.
Watch out, Avatar, the Arrested Development movie will be the new all-time box-office champ. -

arrested development isnt very funny if you only see a few episodes, most jokes are self contained, its fucking great if you watch it in order
by angrykirby.tk
I originally thought the show sucked but when I watched them in order and it made me get all the jokes that I thought were just dialogue originally, "I've made a huge mistake" isn't really funny without the context.
I am a big fan now, it's a really funny show. If you don't get why everyone likes it, sit and watch it in order, once it clicks you'll die laughing -
I'LL STILL WATCH IT, BUT ITS TOO LATE. MICHAEL SERRA'S GONNA TRY TO TAKE A BIGGER ROLE AND THEN THE WHOLE THING WILL BE RUINED. JUST SAYING.

Can someone give me a quick synopsis about the story line and what is so good about the show?
-
If you have never seen it, do yourself a favour and watch it from the start. There is something amazing about a show that sets up a joke that pays off two seasons later. My favourite sitcom of all time and eagerly awaiting the return. If it comes to be...
-
Greatest show ever. Awesome cast. Not a dull person on the show. Everyone is entertaining and everyone is hilarious. I can't wait. Even more thrilled to hear that not only are we getting a movie...but 10 more episodes?! YES!
-
... "Arrested Development" wasn't exactly cancelled after a couple of seasons because everybody on Earth thought it was fucking hilarious, was it? You guys might have found it to be comedy gold, but it was a niche show and the masses might not necessarily see it your way. Sorry. (see also: "Firefly", "The Sarah Conner Chronicles", "Veronica Mars", "Freaks & Geeks", "Undeclared", "any other TV show produced by Judd Apatow", "Earth 2", "Dollhouse", "any other show produced by Joss Whedon not featuring a vampire", "Life On Mars U.S.A.", "non-Marc Singer V", "Enterprise", "The Inferior Live-Action Tick", "Cop Rock", "Twin Peaks", "Hello, Larry", "Hee-Haw", etc.)

Wow Arrested Development AND Futurama resurrected, what's next FOX? Firefly?
by rebel scumb
I don't see that as very likely, but then I never dared to dream Futurama would come back, and I thought with Arrested Development at best we'd get a movie but even that was seeming unlikely.
I just rewatched all of AD a few weeks ago and it reconfirmed to me that this is (in my opinion) the best comedy of all time. -
The fact that Two and a Half Men was the number one sitcom on TV speaks volumes for the crap that most people will watch
-
Won't keep my hopes up, but if it happens, I'll be first in line! Love the Bluth family!
-
her?
-
DOUCHE CHIIIIIIIIIIIILLLL!
-
because they reduced their selection in DVD blu ray and want everyone to use digital downloads.
I want commentaries and extras. -
I sure hope Cera is able to get back into the George Michael character . . .
-
I've been too hopeful too many times before. I won't get fooled again. Even though....PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!
-
Look, I admit that this show had a niche and wasn't for everyoe, but haveing this 10 extra episodes will be very good then a movie (which I find weird since I can't see this concept brought to the big screen but what the hell, if they can make it work why not!).
AD was one of those quality shows that just never got to be understood quite properly, even I liked the damn thing but still find something new to think about and little moments that I missed that are really funny.
So for me, go ahead! Make it happen! -
My socks are wet.
-
Steve needs to make a cameo, as does Kitty, Bob Loblaw, Henry Winkler, Anyong, the blue man group and the gay guy with the pirates sign.
Its as plain as the Anne on egg's face -
In fairness to mst3kpimp, while he is a douchebag to come in here just to piss on the parade, I saw the first episode at the urging of my girlfriend and was seriously underwhelmed. The show struck me as just a lot of manic, self-consciously quirky mugging, and I failed to see what the fuss was about. It wasn't until a second, more determined try months later that it clicked with me, and I became a rabid fan.
The thing I think that makes Arrested Development so great but also a tough sell is that it's so different from what you might expect, yet so similar to things you've seen, that it takes a while to realize that what you're seeing -- while appearing kind of lame on the surface -- is actually hyper-self-aware and deliberate. At first it seems like just a goofy sendup of "Soap," which it is, but it takes the premise so much further. -

I never got into this show. Whats the point of a movie now?
by jasonicus
-
sandwiches.
-
The way elements would effect other plot elements, gather up steam and eventually crack a joke down the line, perhaps episodes later, was genius. It was like fucking chess strategy applied to humor. You really had to marathon a string of episodes until the patterns emerged, because half of the humor was based on inside jokes... But once you were on the inside, my God was it funny.
Really, a horrible concept for network television, but crack to the detail-obsessed crowd that makes up Internet fandom. -
It was not god's gift to comedy.
-
I'm excited to see what they do with it. The original show was great. Like knowthyself said, it wasn't God's gift to comedy, but it always managed to make me smile.
-
The difference betweed AD and those other shows you listed?
THIS ANNOUNCEMENT
No, five years ago "the masses" didn't care for this show. Fox aired the last four episodes in a block against the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. Didn't it also at one point take the "Sunday 6:30 pm ct/no one's really watching right now" spot?
And you're right that "the masses" probably still don't care about/know about this show. But Michael Cera, Will Arnett, and Jason Bateman are draws now. Say what you will about their individual talents, people still recognize them.
AD has had five years of DVD sales, word of mouth, hipster following, facebook quoting, etc to snowball into what is AT LEAST grounds for a mini series and feature film. There's never been a better time for the series to be revived.
Yeah yeah you didn't get it, never got into it, wasn't that funny, it's overrated, whatever. This news is still (according to 400+ articles, and trending on Twitter) big news and as a fan it's great news. No one here said it should be everyone's favorite show...but this news is obviously meaningful to quite a few people. -
Is that each episode is only supposed to focus on one character, when these characters tend to work best when working off of each other (particularly Michael and GOB)

This took over the top spot as Best Show Ever right around the time Justice nosedived into a trash can. And 7 years later, it hasn't left. Everyone I know will eventually watch it with me, because it the most re-watchable show in existence. Jokes and plot lines set up in the first season pay off in the last season. Look for the flashback to Michael as a 'maritime lawyer' in a Peter Pan musical and note that Buster is playing Captain Hook. And his hook falls off. Genius. Not easy for everybody to get into I'll admit, but once you're in the payoff is amazing. Who knows if they'll be able to pull off the mini-series & movie concept, or they're just making fun of narrator Ron Howard's failed Dark Tower attempt. But I can't wait.

Arrested is the best live-action sitcom in the last twenty years. Modern Family is in the same vein, but when it comes time to twist the knife in a Bluth way, they slip it out and apologize to keep it family-friendly. Not so with AR. It was relentless, ruthless, take-no-prisoners comedy, with only Archer on the same level, but since it's animated and on FX, it's not quite the same level of bravery and boldness. If for no other reason, we need this show back to give Will Arnet something decent to star in! His last two efforts have been weak sauce at best. He was born to be GOB and anything else that weakly tries to channel that same brilliance is an insult! PLEASE make this happen!!!
-
