Lionsgate to make a Dead Island flick!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Yeah, I played a lot of Dead Island. I don’t get the lukewarm reviews. Is it equal measures Left 4 Dead and Borderlands? Sure is! Am I upset about that? Sure ain’t! The Borderlands randomized weapons boxes/automatic upscaling of enemy powers brings the addiction part and Left 4 Dead part brings the gory zombie action.

I like it, I don’t necessarily think there’s any real story from the game that needs to be adapted into a movie, but I dig the aesthetic and if you’ve seen the teaser trailer for the game you know that someone with a flashy style could have a lot of fun in this world now that Lionsgate is now planning on making a movie from the game.

In fact, the press release from Lionsgate mentions the above trailer specifically as being the jumping off point for the film, which they promise to be focused on “family ties and non-linear storytelling.”

I’m all for it if they’re willing to go full hardcore R rated fun zombie mayhem. The human emotion and family ties stuff is very important, but what we like about the trailer is the style, gore and focus on zombie kid violence. And by “we” I mean “me.”

And who should direct it? I bet you a bazillion dollars they want to get Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer to direct, but having just seen Juan of the Dead I really would love to see Cuban director Alejandro Brugues get a shot at it. I mean, he’s already done a fun zombies-on-an-island movie!

Will this be the first truly great video game adaptation? Probably not, but it’s a good start that they’re not trying to adhere to the very thin plot of this game and instead want to take the title, setting, tone and look and build up a movie around that.

What do you folks think?

Yeah it's the Scientist vid with Zombies

    by alpha

But is that a bad thing? Great video and it worked well in the Zombie game trailer context. It's a fun game and it could work as a film. The reason Resident Evil never worked that well is the obscure kind of anime style plot, here it's Zombies on a tropical island and people trying to survive ... that's an easy simple horror movie plot and if it's done well then it will work. If they are smart you put 4 people together ala the co-op mode and have them trying to survive (and largely failing). The inside of buildings is all darkness (power is out) but outside it's a bright sunny paradise - well except for the undead. Lots of fun with flaming baseball bats and burning zombies. Zombie films aren't adapting Tolstoy for fraks sake. Here are the characters from the game Xian Mei is an employee at the Royal Palm Resort, born and raised in China, she chose an occupation that allowed her to leave her country of birth in order to experience different people and cultures - Banoi is her first placement outside of her homeland. She is a fast learner, intelligent, and also - as a passionate sportswoman - quick on her feet. Having just arrived at the island, Xian Mei was responsible for a myriad of menial tasks at the hotel, before starting work as a receptionist. This opportunity to meet and greet all the different nationalities that visited the hotel was ideal for Xian Mei, as it provided a perfect source of inspiration for her dreams of travelling the globe. A one-hit-wonder rap star of fading fame, Sam B was booked by the Royal Palms Resort Hotel to perform his well known song "Who do You Voodoo?" at a high profile hotel party. He gladly took the chance to play this gig. Once strong, self-confident and proud, Sam B has had a troubled past and a history of drug and alcohol abuse, as his private life became caught in a haze of fake friends and bad advisors. Trying to pick up the pieces and earn some extra cash, he suddenly finds himself surrounded by a whole lot of different problems... A former American football star, spoiled by life and successful in every possible way, Logan's ego finally put an end to his bright future. Taking part in a reckless street race with tragic consequences, Logan not only killed a young woman - his unfortunate passenger; he also fractured his knee, putting an end to his sports career. His fall from stardom inevitably followed and he plunged swiftly into a life of bitterness and despair. In an attempt to get away from the demons hunting him, he gladly takes the chance to experience the beauties and wonders of Banoi. Soon enough though the getaway he was dreaming about turns into a real life nightmare... Purna is a former officer of the Sydney Police department. After losing her career when she killed a child molester who could not be touched legally because of his wealth and connections, Purna then turned to working as a bodyguard for VIPs in dangerous places all over the world. She is hired not just for her skills but her looks as wealthy men did not mind showing up with Purna on their arm. Here goes casting spec based on the visuals of the characters Logan - Chris Evans Purna - Tabrett Bethell Sam B - Tyrese Gibson Xian Mei - Maggie Q

    The game was boring

    by SCYTHEOFLUNA

Too much repitition, too many canned animations, wooden voice-overs, bad collision detection, inconsistent combat, generic weapons, choppy framerate & no real story to make any of the rest of it worth tolerating. As long as the film is Dead Island in name only It should be fine.

    by ravenloff

First of all, the unbridled genius of the original trailer for the game deserves every bit of recognition it gets. It's on par, as far as trailer-making excellence (an art form in and of itself) with the original Star Wars: The Old Republic. Seriously...get those guys jobs in feature films. As far as the game goes, as a veteran games since, oh, 1996, I can honestly say this is one of the most engrossing (heavy on the gross) games of it's type I've seen. Certainly it's the only game that's actually startled me like a horror movie would. Part of that is my innate fear of the zombie/end of civilization thing, but part is just good game making. The quests are good and make sense in context (except for the poster one in town...just stupid, although you could make an argument that the dad was just in shock). My only bitch is that you never really get hordes coming after you. A half-dozen at the most and once you leave their immediate area, they turn back. Randomly dropping zombies into areas you've already cleared is pretty good too. As far as the movie aspects go...it a rich palette to paint with and I hope they don't screw it up. If they got even halfway to the pure, unadulterated genius of the original trailer with the kid, they'll have a genre milestone on their hands.

    Just have to point out...

    by ravenloff

...playing as the ex-quarterback and getting all the bonuses to thrown weapons is by far the best fun. Taking down one of the "boss" zombies with a dozen or so small throwing knives, and seeing them realistically hit and stick...and the damned thing still coming at you, is just cool as shit.

    Videogame adaptation guide:

    by torontoxic

Fundamental rule: most games succeed in spite of the story. They're are interactive tools who succeed because of the functions. ONLY adapt games who succeed in spite of being lousy games. Kane and Lynch for example. FPS do not a good movie make. I don't know why this is so hard for some of these idiots. *hint* most people buy games for the multiplayer aspect now anyhow. Even if the story is half decent people still don't really care about it to the point that it doesn't make more sense to just make up an entirely new story. Seriously something called Zombie Island with a completely unique script would do just as well as this adaptation.

If it's specifically like that trailer, I'm in.

    by Monroville

That's one fantastic trailer. It's a shame that a video game trailer has more emotion to it than say THE THING remake (among many others) with real people in it. I could see the entire story following "a" family, if not this specific one. Of course, we can all see that it has a 70's ending... would that be mandatory, or would that just be too depressing to see a family you grow to care about get wiped out by zombies?

  • Sept. 29, 2011, 12:54 p.m. CST

Quint, I love that you game, a rarity it seems on AICN

    by Sean

This site has an odd relationship with games. harry treats them like the great plague or something but it's nice to know at least one of you guys actually understands the value of interactive entertainment. Harry needs to put down the Errol Flynn movies and learn to love the sticks.

  • can anyone convince me otherwise? As far as videogame movies go, I feel like I'm banging the same drum over and over, but take a look at the "single take" scenes that Cuarón directed for Children Of Men. For instance, the escape from the farm has the look and feel of a classic third person stealth game. The camera is in perfect relationship with the surroundings and viewpoint of the protaganist, bobbing and weaving, keeping the focus on the guards and the getaway with the vehicle.

    by vetepalapinga

That "obscure anime plot" (SWAT team trapped in a mansion with zombies and monsters from experiments gone wrong is obscure anime?) was never used in the movie, they made up a dumb story that had nothing to do with the video game. When you see the sequels, especially the last one, its like watching The Matrix with zombies- too much slo mo with wooden acting. They should have made that movie with Romero at the helm using his script.

when they add shit like 'different' zombies, etc. Why can't someone make a Flashpoint-esque 'real world' zombie game? Where they have no special skills but are dangerous by their sheer number? I'd fucking love that. I liked Left 4 Dead apart from all the spitter/charger zombie shit. I just lose interest then.

    by lv_426

I find it hilariously sad that besides World War Z and The Walking Dead, H-wood falls all over themselves to make a film adaptation of a trailer for a zombie videogame when instead they could be adapting one of several good zombie books published in the last few years (Day By Day Armageddon, Plague of the Dead, and Steven King's CELL).

Movies based on video games usually aren't good anyway...

    by brocknroll

The only good movies based on video games, I've seen were the first, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and "Hitman". I'll admit that I'm interested in the "Heavy Rain" movie though. I still haven't played, "Dead Island", so I really can't judge. The game I'm currently playing is "Deus Ex" and it's a really good game so far.
