SCREAM 3... actually pretty good' JoBlo takes a gander and comes up with his look...

Published at:  Feb 02, 2000 4:34:12 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... JoBlo has just seen SCREAM 3 and has come back satisfied and happy. Now... for those of you wanting to stay virgin on this film... I'll do a complete non-spoiler summary of this review. First off, he liked the first one and thought the second had significant lameness and enjoyed this one thoroughly. Specifically... the way it wraps up and how it doesn't telegraph everything, but remains scary and funny. I'll be seeing this sucker first thing Friday, and I'm hoping to enjoy it, though I HATE THE SECOND FILM!!! But as many have said, "Stop your fucking bitching about the second film!" so I will. Maybe this one can be good or very good or a shitload of fun... That's all I want. Here's JoBlo... By the way... He says more about the film on his site http://www.joblo.com/scream3.htm and he also has images, screensavers and additional trivia and stuff. Well worth it. Also while there... Check out all the kickass Screensavers and stuff!

Get excited everybody, we finally got ourselves a really good movie in the year 2000! It only took a little over a month but SCREAM 3 has arrived, tagged to a solid storyline, bloodstained action, a great cast, slick dialogue, an unpredictable ending and cameos all around. If you liked 1 & 2, you'll scream for numero 3!

PLOT:

Poor l'il Sydney has moved to L.A. and isolated herself from the outside world. In the meantime, the third movie based on her life, called STAB 3, is being filmed in and around the Hollywood lots. It isn't until the actual cast members of the film start getting killed in real life, that Sydney decides that it's time to come back out into the world and face up to her past...and a nutjob who goes by the name of ghostface!

CRITIQUE:

The end of this trilogy is a solid hit on all counts with plenty of suspense, intrigue, bloody murders, big boobies and cool in-jokes to satisfy any SCREAM fan who had been patiently tolerating all of the lame-brain wannabees over the past few years. This one kept me and my buddy guessing about the killer the whole way through, and with typical Craven pinnache, everyone in the cast seemed to be a suspect at some point or another. Of course, I won't spoil it for you, but suffice it to say that I was satisfied with the conclusion, and certainly didn't guess it before it was revealed. It was definitely a much better finale than the lame one that the sequel had tossed our way a few years back. The cast in this film was another thumb up, with everyone involved doing their share to make this film as authentic as any other. This time around, most of the story seemed to center around the Cox and Arquette characters, and both actors came through on their respective counts. In fact, Arquette and Parker Posey are both excellent in this film, with each one coming up just enough laughs to keep things light between killings. Jenny McCarthy also clocked in a decent performance alongside her boobs who delivered their lines perfectly while demonstrating great versatility and range.

The twists and turns in the film were also well handled and intelligently written, and will likely leave the proverbial scary movie "that doesn't make any sense" complaints outside the theater. The big opening scene is just that...a big opening scene, which lives up to its predecessors and delivers the bloody goods as always. Overall, I guess I am also kind of glad that this will be the final one because it is a very good movie, and I would rather remember this trilogy as just that, instead of it turning into a tired ol' parody of itself over and over and over again. In fact, that's probably the only thing that I did hold against this film, and that is the fact that despite it being an original tale set among actual Hollywood soundstages, the overall framework of the movie is basically the same. Ghostface wants to kill Sydney...ghostface kills others who get in the way...now let's guess who ghostface is. Thankfully, they ended the trilogy on a real high note with this winner.

And contrary to some initial reports, the violence in this film is still all there, in fact, I got the impression that this installment had an even higher body count than either one of its previous incarnations...but don't quote me on that. The pacing was also solid with a little setup, some action, some blood, some background story, more action, more murders and so on and so forth. Pretty neat if you dig that kind of shtuff. The one thing that is for sure is that you definitely have to be a fan of the first two movies to truly enjoy this one. In fact, I would suggest re-watching them both before checking this one out, cause this is definitely a continuation of the story, and many references to the previous films abound. All in all, this scary movie is the perfect bookend to the successful trilogy that jumpstarted the teen horror genre back in the late 90s. It's packed with murders, humor, suspense, cheap scares, pretty girls, hip dialogue and a legitimately surprise ending. Sound like something you'd like? Well what are you waiting for then...get out there and scream your ass off! And what is your favorite scary movie??

    I can't wait

    by mickey finn

I loved the first one, I thought that the second one had nice touches (David Warner anybody?) but came across overall as a bad soap opera with a ridiculously convoluted ending. An I can't wait for this one. Actually, I don't have much against all the copycat films that followed in Scream's wake, unlike some people - I Know What You Did Last Summer, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend ... hey, what the fuck, they're bad, but they're fun, (unintentionally) funny and they've got big tits in 'em. HOWEVER, I can't wait to see the genre continue with some PANACHE(though I liked Blair Witch Project, it's hardly a path you could go down for long without making all movies look like America's Funniest Home Videos). And I want to see Wes Craven carry on doing what he's GOOD at and making horror films, instead of trying to be versatile (no offence Wes, but Music of the Heart? geez...)

    by brundledan

These movies blow. Always have, always will. This one, in fact, probably sucks even more shit than the others, as evidenced by them deciding to dump it into February. Thank God this useless series is ending; let's jettison these "savvy" teen fuckheads and get back to real horror films.

Can we get some nudity this time, please???

    by cereal killer

I loved "Scream" and also dug "Scream 2" and I'm looking forward to this one. My only complaint about the scream movies is the lack of gratuitous nudity. These movies are supposed to parady the '80's horror flicks and in "Scream" they even mention that gratuitous nudity is part of the deal and yet we get nothing. You'd think that in "Scream" we'd have seen at least Drew Barrymore and Rose McGowan naked. They haven't been shy in other films so why no bare breasties in this? In "Scream 2" we coulda used a sex scene between Rebecca Gayheart and Portia de Rossi and I woulda killed to see Sarah Michelle Geller in the shower. Unfortunately, all those Scream-wannabes have followed the trend of no-nudity as well. Why couldn't we have watched Sarah Michelle change into her bathing suit in "I Know What You Did Last Summer?" And Jennifer Love Hewitt's boobs are just dying to pop out of her blouse for some fresh air. "Urban Legend" could've been a good movie if they'd let Rebecca Gayheart perform some cunnilingus on Alicia Witt while she had her tied down. And Tara Reid played a sex advice DJ; couldn't they have included a little masterbation scene with her. See, these movies could've been great. My sincere hope is that "Scream 3" will finally let us see Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox treat poor Dewey to a three-way.

    Nudity Factor

    by joblo

** SPOILER warning about the nudity factor in the film**

Sorry dude...no nudie shots in this one either, but McCarthy (first name Jenny) actually "works" as the dumb blonde in the flick (I won't touch that easy joke) and even manages to wobble them around nicely in one particularly cool scene.

It's funny cause my friend and I also said the same thing after this movie..."the only thing REALLY missing from the Scream series is gratuitous nudity!". But hey, it's the 90s, uhmmm I mean, the 2000s, and I guess Craven wants to clean things up a little.

Oh well, maybe it's time for gratuitous nudity to become a staple for BOTH SEXES!!! Yeah, that's the ticket...bloody murders, nekidd people running all around......

    Don't mind me...it's early and I'm drunk :)

Sorry to be a prude, but...

    by mickey finn

...the great things about horror movies (and James Bond films) is the PROMISE of nudity. Real nudity, in bad slasher movies on cable, is far more boring. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is an exercise in keeping Love Hewitt's jugs excellently prominent without ever quite giving them 'fresh air.' If you enjoy watching voluptious teen icons bounce around the big screen, trust me, you're better off without nudity. If you just want to jack off, get a porno. Scream 3 is gonna rock.

    "Surprise" Ending...

    by justin sane

...I said it when we first heard about this film, and I'll say it again. Everyone with half a brain knows that Sydney (sp?) will be the killer in the last flick. It's exactly the kind of ending they want to have so all the teenyboppers will squeal "OH MY GODDESS!" and then go stare at their Ben Affleck pin-ups to take away the horror of such an ending from their brains.
And, by watching the commercial, everyone knows Dewey isn't the killer as (I assume) Ghostface, or whatever they call him, throws a knife at him. Dewey certainly isn't capable of throwing a knife at his own head, I don't care how fucked up he is.
And as for Sydney saying "What's your favorite scary movie?" in the trailer, it probably takes place at the very end after we find out she's the killer and she goes to live somewhere else under a false identity (it looks like she's working in an office or something).
I may be wrong, but won't it be amusing if I'm right? ;-)

I'm not trying to make trouble...

    by r_dimitri22

I've been reading Harry's reviews for over two years now, and something about his comments here jumped out at me. I thought y'all might be interested in an excerpt from the text of Harry's original review for Scream 2. The lesson is: opinions can definitely change. Hell, I loved Jurassic Park the first time that I saw it (even though I did find it extremely inferior to the book on my first viewing), but once the adrenaline surge from seeing T-Rex in action the first few times wore off, I came to think of it as a deeply flawed film. Anyway, here are some of Harry's original thoughts about Scream 2: "What was I talking about? Oh yeah, SCREAM 2! Weeeellllllllll, let me first say that I am not a gigantic Scream fan. In fact, I thought the first film had some scenes that dragged (Skeet Ulrich - the primary offender) but as a whole I liked it. It was clever and funny and the ending both made sense and worked for me. HOWEVER, this film feels a bit rushed. I never really got the idea that they were at a college, that they (victims/kids) were smart at all, or that the film was working. Now I don't hate the film, I just think that it is lessor than the original. As Halloween 2 was to Halloween, so is this to Scream. Is it worth seeing? Oh Yeah!! If for only one fantasticly tense sequence about 35 minutes before the end of the film." He goes on to make a very heated complaint about the death of Randy. Perhaps this was the primary factor in Harry's coming to hate the film. (That part of the Scream 3 trailer where we see Randy advising Sidney from beyond the grave via videotape looks interesting. Randy would, of course, have seen Scream 3 coming. He probably recognized himself as an expendable character before his demise.) Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie on Friday night. I don't expect much, but it's something to do.

    The Killer?

    by the happy ninja

Boy I tell you what, I really hope that they don't end the "Who is the killer?" train of thought of having a really wanky idea like in Scream 2 - "Oh great, it's the mother of the killer in the first film, and a lame side kick". That was so pathetic. The killer(s) in the original Scream film was more ingenius, having two (one of them supposedly dying 20 minutes before the end only to come back and reveal himself). If there isn't a truly ORIGINAL killer this time I don't know what I'm going to do.

    Welcome to the final act.

    by jack burton

Scream 2 rocked. It was faster, more intense, and bloodier then the original. Killing off Randy was a cool move because it showed that no one was safe and it made part 2 more involving then the first. I believe that Scream 3 will end the series with style. Between the hush-hush publicity, the cool as hell Internet sites (Gailweathers.com is hysterical) and the total lockdown on information, Scream 3 is looking to be the first great movie of the year. After all the knockoffs it's time to come back to the original and show the imitators how it's done. Maybe it will finally put an end to the resurgence of teen slasher pics.

scream 2 wasnt all bad, but Scream 3 will be better

    by thewood254

I am thinking the third one will be good myself. i liked the first two. I understand how harry can be mad about randy being killed (I was), but that doesn't make the movie suck. I thought it was great hpw Craven and Williamson got THAT big of a reaction out of people when a character died. It got the audience emotionally invloved. all in all, number 2 improved on the main characters and moved the plt forward for this one. Sure some of it was rehashed but a ina good way. I am sure this one will be good though, cause let's face it, this is Craven's show now, not williamson's, and craven is more proven at his skill.

    Stallone's D-TOX; SCREAM 3

    by abking

Scream 3 sounds like it's going to be good fun at the movies. Stallone's D-TOX, which is a action/slasher/suspence/thriller and opens September 1st should also be good fun. Sly has never done this genre before (usually, it's teenagers) and it will make the film different. I hear that the film keeps you guessing until the very end (like SCREAM 3). I hope D-TOX is the last slasher movie and the last great one at that.

    The Killer...

    by madamimadam

I hope the killer's revelation is better handled than it was in Scream 2, which seemed to come out of nowhere (like in Sea of Love..oh, look, it was the cable guy who was in about a minute and a half of screentime before). In the first Scream it made logical sense, the second one was high on my Huh? chart. This time, wouldn't it be funny if the mask is pulled off and Wes Craven is revealed as the killer! He's not a bad actor as he proved in New Nightmare.

  • I saw the exact thing crawling in my basement a few years ago, now it's on Shatner's head. To perm it in the 80's, he must have taken it off his head first. BTW Shatner is the "big giant head" or at least its what neve calls him.

Fat Bastard: Target Audience for Godzilla, Good Burger, and Kull

    by way of the leaf

I just had to say something. The reason Harry did not like Scream 2 was because it was a bad movie...The only thing good about Scream 2 was when the credits started scrolling up the screen....as for Jurasic Park 2 holy crap did it suck. The whole awe inspiredness of JP1 was completely lost in dark, tunnels of crap. I mean I thought I was watching the movie through a empty paper towel roll.

    2 was better than one!!!!

    by silverscreen

the opening segment of "Scream" was edge-of-your-seat fun while the rest was a serviceable jab at the genre; no great shakes but still fine. I had the opposite reaction to 2. The opening segment in the theatre was
a serviceable start, but the rest was kick-ass!! A lot more in-joke
references and several more moments of suspense than first film, coupled with better acting and a script perhaps too knowing of the conventions of traditional hollywood sequals, made 2 a treat!! Face it,
genre pic or not, scream 2 was one of the best films of "97.period.
P.S. Anyone ever heard of a spoof of "Airplane"? And why would you?
A parody of a parody sounds lame. "Scary Movie" better be funnier
than "Student Bodies" and "Saturday the 14th"( NOT a cult film, just a lame one). I hope none of the cast members of the scream series is in
"Scary Movie"; it will tarnish the trilogy's name.

If you were responding to my post, I was not questioning why Harry did not like Scream 2. I was simply pointing out that his opinion went from one of being pleasantly entertained to feeling utter, all caps hatred. As for Jurassic Park 2, yes, that was atrocious.

    Actually...

    by r_dimitri22

Harry did use the word "hate" in his initial Scream 2 review during his rant about Randy. However, I found it a little misleading that his non-spoiler portion of the review did expressly say that he did not hate the film. I am aware that the recent Scream 3 updates have included expressions of his distaste. Oh, well. Opinions change. I found Scream 2 to be very watchable, but the ending was horrible and the appropriately vapid sorority girls should not have been introduced if they were not going to come to a bloody end. If it was a self-aware horror flick set in college, surely they would be the most obvious victims. Instead, Sarah Michelle was the only sorority girl to meet her doom.

That's all I have to say, although that would be an awesome choice for a killer. Don't believe what that moron said. Either way, people like that should be thrown legs-first into woodchoppers. These are the same people that give away the ending to Sixth Sense and American Beauty, and god forbid FIGHT CLUB!! I was lucky enough to atleast not know the ending to that, and sometimes I wish that Harry would moderate boards like this where the ending could be given away. Nonetheless, this isn't the ending, so don't get pissed.

    by judius

For those of you who figured out who the killer is, congrats, for those of you who havent figured it out yet you'll be kicking yourself for not figuring it out sooner. If you want to know who it is then scroll down

the killer is... Randy. At least he's one of the killers. The other killer is *hint* he was in the first film but not in the second and is at the beginning of this one and there's a good reason why he's one of the masterminds ( dammit, watch the first film, the answer is riiight there!!!). The other killer(s) shall remain a mystery(s) for you all to enjoy. Didn't Randy die? No, you never saw him die. He was attacked in public ( for potential witnesses), struggled but wasnt actually seen killed( you saw the knife plunge but unlike other victims you never saw it pierce). You saw his body with blood but no one was there to actually presume him dead. And he was shot in the first film but he ended up ok afterwards?(only if it was a blank or rehearsed ahead of time) Think about it. Plus, not to mention his love for horror movies and remember that it was he who set out the "rules".
