Cool News
So this is Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows... Okay...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here.
Uh...

Okay... so... That's happening, I guess. Call me crazy, but this feels like somebody making fun of Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaborations not a new Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie.
Outside of some episodes viewed as a child I'm pretty in the dark (yuk-yuk) when it comes to Dark Shadows, but I don't seem to remember it looking like this. Over at Badass Digest Devin Faraci said Depp looks like Michael Jackson cosplaying as The Joker and I haven't been able to shake that description.
I wasn't too negative on the Mad Hatter image of Depp that leaked... it felt cooky and weird and kind of right for the character. Here I'm at a loss. Hopefully that's sunblock, right? What do you folks think?

Again.

So what exactly does a straight Michael Jackson look like?
-
Weirdest combo ever...
-
the movie was being filmed in B/W.
-
since the show was, if that would be the case then the makeup probably wouldnt look as bad or odd. but i doubt that's the case. i was totally picturing his sweeney todd look minus the hair when thinking of this movie.
-
Come on Johnny... less make-up, more acting. You don't need this friggin' schtik.
-
I like Depp as an actor, but this surely doesn't give the movie justice.

Depp & Burton are fans of the original...and THIS is their idea of "being faithful" to it?
by theDORK
-
that is all.
-
Screw it, I can do without this nonsense.
-
Considering how much Burton tends to post-produce the shit out of his movies, it's kind of silly to assume this is exactly what it's going to look like in the final version (kinda like the uproar about a certain man-in-a-bat-costume recently)... That being said, this does look rather absurd.

I'm starting to feel like success is the worst thing that can happen to an artist
by TheUmpireStrokesBach
Somebody please name some directors/musicians/artists who has ever achieved fantastic success and yet continued to produce high-quality, uncompromised works that hold up just as well as their newb output. I know there are a few out there like Kubrick (arguably) and a handful of others, but it just seems those guys are way outnumbered by a myriad of fallen icons/idols who just somehow went to complete shit on their arrival to the big time. Exhibit A: George Lucas.

by MisterManReturns
This looks ludicrous, whatever context. Wonka and Mad Hatter were painful enough - Thank God he's not playing the Wizard in "Oz." A little bit of this kind of crap, goes a LONG way. I grew up on "Dark Shadows" - I don't expect a modern version to replicate the original, but COME ON.

by Yotz Von Frelnik
Those little pasted-down, forward-sweeping locks by the ears are very Jonathan Frid. And how many times have we seen a production photo snapped out of context in the wrong lighting, etc, etc, only to have the final result look pretty darn good after all?

Why does Depp feel like every role he portrays must in some part resemble an icon from the music world? You know director's on these films must cringe when he shows up on set decked out like sum kind of Castro District freak parade reject and feeling completely powerless to rein in the crazy since it's Depp we are talking about here and he's got the mega-star stroke that renders most on set ball-less.
-
I'm way tired of latter days Burton. It's just boring. It's un-evolving schtick. He has three incredible, timeless films -- BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and ED WOOD. And BATMAN RETURNS. Anyway. Everything else he's done ranges from good to great to meh to blah. As a filmmaker, his vision hasn't changed -- he hasn't grown. I liked SLEEPY HOLLOW, and it was almost a departure, but he just camped it up. It could have been deeply weird and creepy, but he edged it with goofiness, like the 'dark' he projects is all show -- like he can't go the places his gothic side show only suggests. I checked out after SWEENEY TODD. It was his second chance, and while it wasn't goofy it was still camp -- high, dry camp. He just... never gets where he needs to go. He skims the surface of things. He needs to be more like Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman does the goth thing, but it's the most heartfelt mythology written in the modern age, an incredibly beautiful, harsh, creepy fairytale. There was a time when I would have thought Burton and Gaiman were a perfect match, but I think I'd be sad if it happened today.

Deferential people of a dozen callings of whom the celebrity expects nothing but subservience and prostration, who manage every aspect of celebrity's existence as if celebrity is a baby, who do nothing but nurse celebrities all their lives.
by Pvt. Duke
Does Depp have anyone in his life to say, "Stop playing a sissy!" or "You kind of did that last time." Any artist worth their title will be able to differentiate between the trolls and the constructive critics, so it would probably be in their interest to browse sites like these and get some unbiased feedback. Too many dim little sycophants once you get even close to celebrity... to stay at the top of your game for years is almost impossible without cold perspective.

My father watched "Dark Shadows" as a kid, and loved it. When I told him that Burton was directing a film adaptation, he lit up and said, "great choice!" Thats the problem. Burton needs to distance himself from things that are inherently "Burton-y." His versions of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland" were so drenched in the classic Burton aesthetic that the films didn't have room to fucking breathe. They seemed like extended reels of a film student trying to rip off Burton's characteristic look. Essentially, he's gone so far into his niche that its become cliche. I love "Big Fish" so much. That film was so "un-Burton" in its tropes that it allowed the viewer to watch the film never once seeing it as a Burton film... it allowed viewers like me to simply buy in to the Father/Son storyline and be swept away. It was refreshing. I don't think I realized it was a Tim Burton film until the end credits rolled. He needs another script like that. With Charlie, Alice, Dark Shadows and Frankwenweenie, he seems to solely be seeking out things that fit his over-played aesthetic sense. Think outside the box, Tim! It could be enlightening. (yes, I know him thinking outside the box led to his "Planet of the Apes." lets strike that one from the record, for the sake of my argument.)
-
Hmmmmmm..... Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are reteaming for an update/re-boot/re-imagining of the old 60ies/70ies "Dark Shadows" series? Ok! I am officially interested in it! I am a HUGE fan of Tim Burton and most of the films he has done in the past and the collaboration with Johnny Depp has been terrific. Now, I barely remember this series when it was on tv...it ran on ABC...and I was extremely young when the original series aired and have very few memories of it other than the fact that my older sisters loved the show AND one of them had the "Dark Shadows" board game complete with wearable glow in the dark fangs which I swiped! LOL! The photos show here are merely pics taken of Depp and perhaps an actress/character from the film...keep in mind, this is NOT a clip or pic from the actual film itself. Try to keep an open mind and wait to start judging after the trailers have been released. Burton and Depp have done some excellent films in the past...

Is this a Beetle Juice sequel?
-
He now does nothing but take "classic" properties and piss all over them. It's not like I care particularly for "Dark Shadows" or "Planet of the Apes" or many of the other originals, but he approaches these things with what seems like contempt, but then produces dreck that is even worse than the source material. His "whimsy" got old real quick, but he has three really great films -- "Beetlejuice," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Ed Wood" -- more than enough to get you a lifetime of leverage in Hollywood and allow you to make utter shit the rest of your career. Tim Burton is to filmmaking as Adam Sandler is to comedy.
-
looks something out of a Tezuka manga, in fact if you paste the Sweeny Todd face on, add the black skin patches...you got a perfect Black Jack character, that I hope Burton never directs.

I believe by the time Barnabas arrived it was 1967 and most of the episodes were shot in color, not B&W
by I Max U Mini
Then again, Burton likes B&W and it wouldn't be that bad of a make-up job if it is. We should wait and see before passing judgement on a couple of pics.

blue tinted like Victorian Age spectacles and have blue tinted cellophane or mica "wraparound" shields to keep all sunlight out of his eyes (kinda like old Oakley's from the 80's). The suit is kind of blue too, so I figure this scene has got to be pretty washed out in the final cut... maybe bright lit and/or sepia to hint at the harshness of the daylight environment for him. I hope so, the spy cam shots look all kinds of vamp camp.
-
We get it already.
-
Tim Burton fucked up yet another cool property.
-
Pale-skinned characters, buildings that look like they came out of Dr. Seuss books, weird Euro-Goth clothing, and Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter as the emo-zombie main characters. It's nice to see Burton doing more than just rehashing the same old tricks again.
-
Normally it irritates me when people rag on a project based on a single photo...but given Burton's recent track record, I think I'm going to allow myself to be judgmental. This looks fucking terrible. Jesus jumped up Christ how hard is it to get Barnabas fucking Collins right? Maybe the movie itself will be good, but I doubt it. Burton sucks balls these days. Last good movie was Sleepy Hollow. This should have been another Hammer homage.
-
wait till you see more or for the trailer to come out, then pass your bound to be negative bullshit. burton and depp know what the fuck they're doing. for another thing, you people are'nt even filmmakers so shut the fuck up already
-
...with sunblock, etc., why the lipstick? That's why I am not so sure we are just looking at him protecting himself from the sun. Could be wrong of course. And as some have said, shit like this was common in the silent days, so maybe this is going to be in black and white. It's not like A-list directors haven't made b&w films relatively recently. I think Burton could get the studio to go along with it.

Say it isn't so! This is SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!!

Yet it retains the hallowed "cult following". In all my days, I have yet to meet a person the liked Dark Shadows. Personally, I thought it was quite dull, so whatever Burton and Depp do with it will almost certainly be better than the source - a very rare occurrence.

Barnabas "updated" For These Times Should Be Genuinely Brooding, Scary...
by Rebeck2
And yes, DARK. It's not the time for another one of Burton/Depp's effete sexless freaks. Besides, the whole film should be foggy midnight. Sigh... How depressing. I watched the show as a kid and of course it's dated, etc - but it's so clear to anyone with any imagination how truly cool and eerie an updated version could be.
-
Like I said in my last post, my Dad loved the show and still mentions it well into his adult life... that said, he was 6 years old when the show aired. I'm sure if I showed him an episode these days, he'd be like, "what in the fuck?" lol
-
Burton/Depp haven't let me down yet... If I had to order them as far as personal favs, I guess it would go like this.. 1) Ed Wood 2) Edward Scissorhands 3) Sweeney Todd 4) Sleepy Hollow 5) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 6) Corpse Bride 7) Alice in Wonderland Though Sweeney, Sleepy, Charlie, and Ed Wood probably get the most replay around here...
-
Yeah, because you don't give a shit about some completely silly stupid-ass genre series, like STAR TREK or STAR WARS or BATMAN... Dude, geeks who live in glass houses. Nice try at feeling superior though.

One photo and everyone has the movie pegged, eh? I suppose that's fair as all of the kooky-candy-colors of Alice was represented in the one photo of the Mad Hatter, but even that photo couldn't foretell how flat, phoned-in awful the film would be. The question is, will Burton just phone it in the way he did with Alice? Dark Shadows had such a specific look and feel (even if it was cheap 60s soap opera), that to not use it would be a total waste and they might as well call it Generic Vampire Movie #48741.
-
white like alabaster. Anyhow, this version is unnecessary. The 90's version was enough.
-
Sorry, but there it is. As Sickboy once pointed out, everyone has 'it' for a while, but once they lose 'it', it's gone forever...
-
It's meeting my expectations. Not sure what the rest of you were inhaling. Though I'm really enjoying the general lack of ability to cope with any perceived likeness to Michael Jackson/Elijah Wood/gayness... Makes me smile.
-
The point is not majority or minority. People like what they like and everything has it's fans. And those fans don't want to see their favorite series "ruined" - simple as that. I'm a Bond fan and there's this really ugly charmless thug playing the part right now. All I was saying was don't act like DS fans are crazy cuz it's all the same fanaticism in the end. Oh, and the only Batman I ever gave a shit about was BEGINS and the original campy TV series...you can burn the rest. Opinions are like...
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 1:15 a.m. CST
deaft0ne, oh yeah, Dark Shadows is such a NICHE, that it's been remade in the 90's, and now is bein' revisited via a BIG BUDGET re-boot?
by glodene
Who in the hell would invest over a hundred million on a NICHE product that's over 40 years old? (Especially in these recessionary times). Dark Shadows has a world wide following. Just because you have a dismissive attitude towards it, doesn't lessen its' relevancy or viability.
-
I was expecting a more Gothic look...this just looks like this - http://www.wallpapers10.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Scary-Godmother.jpg
-
Listers of "great" Burton movies are leaving out Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman and Big Fish. I'll take any of those over Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice any day. My faves are Batman and my favorite Johnny Depp movie, Ed Wood. I've never seen the original Dark Shadows show, but the 90's version was pretty damn good.
-
You've become fucking hack!
-
Is very, very, very underrated. I'd easily put it in Burton's top 3 after ED and ES. Again, opinion. His Batman movies were the worst "action" movies I've ever seen.
-
That looks fucking ridiculous. Tim Burton should be stopped...before he fucks up any more properties that were cool.
-
Had a huge crush on Barnabas Collins. Rushed home from school everyday to watch Dark Shadows. Hated Reverend Trask and Angelique. Depp is a great choice, but this makeup doesn't leave me an ounce of hope, and like Quint, I am now left with that Michael Jackson/Joker image in my head.
-
86 years old, and Jonathan Frid STILL has more dangerous sex appeal as Barnabas than Dainty Depp will EVER have.
-
LOL. You have now missed the point three times - I give up, dude. We get it. You think it's a "niche" property, you've said it a hundred times. Now shut the fuck up and go to a talkback where you know what you're talking about and/or actually care.
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 1:47 a.m. CST
bdt, Johnny Depp would be better suited to play Loomis, Barnabas's Lackey, not Barnabus...He's too feminine.
by glodene
-
Any genre or art form is dead or dying when it starts imitating itself. Just watched pee wees big adventure again...Burton needs to revisit his roots and his art will be reborn. In a word, he needs to find the 'joy' in weirdness again instead of focusing on weird for weird's sake. Self-hating narcissism goth is out...quirky Addams family-esque glam-goth will replace it. You heard it here first!
-
The point...is...it doesn't matter the size of the fanbase...however many they are, they still want to see the movie done right. Got it now? Please re-read that if there's still any confusion for you. And not to engage you further, but you are overlooking all the "casual" fans who have heard the name, seen the photos or clips, know the "brand", and want to see it based on that slight knowledge of it's pop culture history. Otherwise...and I'm gonna' slow down again...the studio...would...not...be...spending money on it.
-
seriously when was the last good tim burton film?????sleepy hollow??beetlejuice???hes too drenched in his own little world to realise that he rapes his own movies with a kitchen knife....premise on all his films sounds epic on paper....you watch them and it feels like you been spit roasted by 2 German Sheppard dogs....enough with the burton world for your minority and ever decreasing fanbase upon every film you release....i wish depp wasnt so loyal to burton theres only so much shit you can stick to the wall and quirky characters he can play...
-
Was a mess. It really was. Too much plot, too much ugliness, too much pretentiousness, a pointless second villain, an unsatisfying ending. BEGINS was gritty and darker, but cool, exciting, still a fun comic book movie. TDK took the grit to an extreme that tried to make it something it's not. It was fucking depressing. I don't mind that from a film based in reality - not one based in an imaginary city with a guy running around in a rubber suit. I'm hoping Nolan gets back to making a solid piece of entertainment with the third.
-
And it was erased for some reason. Weird. Bottom Line: I thought it was pretentious, convoluted and depressing. A mess.
-
sad really.
-
Stick three words in front of every review, "In My Opinion" and you realize how pretentious everyone who writes one is. Especially those who sneer on about how they, unlike the great unwashed, don't like something that was very successful.
-
I give up, dude. I never said I wanted someone else to make the film - like most people here I thought these two would be a perfect fit. But this looks like a bad April Fools joke. All I ever did was respond to YOUR condescending and superior attitude about DS fans. You said what sad people actually care about this movie and I answered you. Go back and read it. Whatever you got high in tonight really worked because you are hopelessly dense. Goodbye.
-
Crap. The original Dark Shadows is on YouTube. Go watch it. Let us together, as a people, as a nation, as a planet, turn away from these absurdly stupid Burton/Depp collaborations. Even the BEST of them was never as good as some pretend.
-
Deaftone asked me so I told him.
-
Yeah, it's no wonder you hold the campy classic in such high regard, then. Though, I'm surprised the rubber shark wasn't also deemed "too ugly and depressing" for you. COMIKS DONT LIEK REALITY DUR DUR DUR That's you. That's what you sound like.
-
Sounds like an episode of Jersey Shore. You know what, no. I'm done. I'm so over it, I'm done. I don't even care anymore. I'm done. So over this.

It's Burton & Depp, how can you be surprised with this look?
by Arkhaminmate001
How exactly were you expecting Johnny Depp to look in a Tim Burton movie, normal?
-
Don't think it ever showed in the UK.. Maybe it was only a US thing? The rest of the world is a pretty big and very lucrative market these days..
-
He said as much on the Jonathan Ross show a while ago, and this fits with that statement.
-
He seriously hasn't done anything good for a long time now - and any hopes are already being dashed.
-
...the day after he wrapped on Sleepy Hollow. And he's taking Depp with him. Shame. It's funny actually, I think Burton is the first director I actually grew up following. I mean Spielbeard and Lucas And Ridley Scott were already established when I got into film. But I was in at the ground floor with Burton. And Elfman. And I guess by extension Depp. It's like watching a slow, sad decline into self parody. I'm still hoping he can prove me wrong with Frankenweenie, cos I LOVE the original. But I have a horrible suspicion he's going to pull a Lucas and sour my original memories. But since Sleepy Hollow, which I loved, I've pretty much hated everything he's done. And Elfman hasn't written a decent score in years. Years and years. I need some new heroes.
-
I'm getting the lovechild of Freddy Mercury and Boy George... But it's cool, I'm more invested in the stakes of reviving Dark Shadows for television, could only be pleasently suprised by how they're able to encapsulate it's entire run from the beginning while reinventing it in a single movie
-
Samuel L Jackson & Kevin Spacey are 2 good actor examples of this, both did fantastic work in the 1990s before breaching the mainstream popularity/super success. A lot of it seems to be once an actor or director wins an Oscar to. Personally I haven't liked any of Spielbergs work after Jurassic Park. I know the quality of all those films can be argued and there are plenty who like and even love them. But I don't think many would disagree that all the iconic Spielberg movies, the ones with special magic, Indy trilogy, ET, close encounters, jaws, jurassic park, and even stuff he just produced like back to the future, goonies, poltergeist, etc were all pre-Oscar win. When he became an 'important' director.
-
I've never seen the original show, and had my fill of Depp/Burton collaborations for over a decade now (Sleepy Hollow was great though), but I'll likely be seeing Dark Shadows just based on the eva green factor, at the very least a rental.
-
...pussy in Hollywood. A miserable, lank-haired faggot always playing effeminate makeup-wearing weirdos in terrible Tim Burton movies. Fuck this. I don't even remeber what the movie's supoosed to be called and couldn't give two shits what it's about. I saw the words Burton and Depp, clicked on the link and saw that fineboned pretty-boy cocksucker in white makeup again and lava just about erupted from the top of my head.
-
is Barnabus Collins?
-
And Im sick of John Depp
-
which explains a lot about the clothes and what is probably some strange looking hair under that hat. Not sure what's going on with the pancake make-up though. I gave up on Depp/Burton collaborations after Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
-
Uh, did anybody stop to think this might actually be Burton's idea of a joke? That's pretty lousy vampire makeup for a big budget movie. Even Count Gore de Vol wears better shit than this. It's possible these photos were leaked on purpose to fuck with ... well, with sites like Ain't It Cool.

On the other hand, whoever explained that the sunglasses were some kind of blue-tinted wraparounds, look again (it's a lot clearer in the other pics posted on the source page): he's wearing normal clear glasses and actually has giant blue circles painted around his eyes. If it's a joke, it's a pretty esoteric one (even for Burton), and unless Depp is spending the movie with hollowed-out CGI eye sockets, ala "Jack Skellington", I'm not really sure how this plays into a post-production thing.
-
so he's a combo of willy wonka, ed schissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Mad Hatter & Victor Van Dort so long as he's wearing whiteface makeup. Gotta wear the whiteface makeup.
-
Unfortunately, it got screwed by premiering just before the Gulf War started. It was frequently re-scheduled and pre-empted by news coverage and then cancelled because of bad ratings.
-
I've never watched DARK SHADOWS, but from what I gather, Depp's character is a vampire. Is it really that unusual for a vampire to have pasty white skin? Especially after spending two centuries in a coffin? The hat and sunglasses remind me more of the Coppola/Oldman DRACULA than anything else. I like this look. No complaints.
-
...which would be a much better choice, anyway. Burton needs to hang it up. Cue the Danny Elfman "lalalalalalalala" theme...

I am not a fan of the show and know very little of it
by Samuel Fulmer
But it's hard to be optimistic about this after seeing this picture. I was hoping that we'd be getting at least a semi-serious REAL vampire movie, this looks like Dracula Dead and Loving it!
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 7:58 a.m. CST
Cheesy show to begin with and Burton lost his touch after Ed Wood
by alienindisguise
now he's just lazy..everything has the same boring goth look..do something new fucker.
-
..and spy shots in general, is that they are not just out of context, but devoid of the final colouring, cinematography and lighting that we will see in the final movie. I would assume that the facepaint would not appear to be as extreme as we see here, and with burtons usually playing with shadows etc, this could look quite creepy. Jury is out for sure, but to just knock it (or any movie ) by one shitty spy photos is wrong.
-
We have been slamming on him pretty hard lately.
-
I have crossed oceans of milk to be with you.
-
Not blood. I just vant to suck. And you do, Johnny. Sozlols, but this looks RUH-BISH! Be pleased to be wrong though, always am. Just look at the Apes (not Burtons).
-
Another Burton/Depp shite fest I won't be going to see....
-
...it's the giant blue circles around his eyes. What the hell? And no, they aren't sunglasses. He is clearly wearing glasses in front of the blue paint. I was holding out hope that Depp and Burton could create a dark, atmospheric tribute to the great TV show. Instead it looks like they're turning it into some sort of vampire clown romp. Pathetic.
-
looks like that shitty willy wonka all over again. i hate that these two love working together so much, cause all they know how to make is complete fucking garbage together. they both bring out each others most indulgent, terrible selves.
-
This is a Tim Burton film, and so *of course* Depp is going to look goofy as shit. My question is, will Burton's stylistic choices work for this film? He's made a few fun flicks over the years, but I just have a hard time taking any of his characters seriously, and am always aware that I'm watching a popcorn movie. Now granted, DS was an over-the-top serial/soap, but still, it was never at a Tim Burton level over the top...
-
yeah
-
You can tell because near Depp's right eye the blue is floating in the air coloring everything seen through it, like the actresses hair. Its as if it was made of some sort of transparent glass material. Depps getup looks really bad, but if its black and white it might look interesting.
-
The original 60's soap opera "Dark Shadows' was the best kind of camp. Mainly because they didn't know they were doing camp. Everyone was completely committed to this melodramatic hybrid horror/daytime serial. To their credit, nothing like it had ever been tried and that it has lasted so long is a bit of a triumph. From what I hear, Depp and Co aren't trying to do another "vampire" movie. Why would they? They have set the movie back in the late 60's and are trying to give the film the heightened feeling of the original serial. And that's going to be somewhat comic.
-
Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole had less damaging collaborations. Keep these two people away from each other. I agree with crow3711. I didn't notice the cgi circles though, so that softens the blow a little. Thought they were the actual glasses. What will be there in the final film though? Pinwheels?
-
Strange pics... he's obviously wearing square lenses in front of the blue circles, but - as state by a previous talkbacker - the blue looks like it extends over the actresses hair and the rocks in the above photo. Trick of the light? Strange angle? Are the eyes different?
-
WTF???!! Is this suppossed to be the version of Barnabas Collins that Depp always wanted to play?? you can do a google search and any picture you find of the character is filled with menace and gravitas, not this Tim Burton Shit, are Willy Wonka, The Mad Hatter and Barnabas suppossed to be related or something?? i can just imagine the stupid fucking voice that Depp will use for this character, what a disgrace i sincerely hope that Tim Burton has 3 or 4 M.Night Shamalayans flops in a row so he can get down his fucking high horse and stop casting the same people in every movie (enough with your wife too, hate that bitch)
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 9:25 a.m. CST
The skin around his eyes is painted blue, but the glasses themselves also have a blue tint.
by flax
I have no idea why this is, but it's the only explanation I can come up with. Look closely at his left eye (the one on our right); you'll see that the edge of the lens does not extend beyond the painted blue circle. That's why we don't notice the tint on that one, which makes the other lens (through which we can see the actress's hair) look strange.
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 9:27 a.m. CST
I think it's trick of the light.on his left eye,it is pretty clear
by KilliK
that he is weaing square glasses, but in his left it looks like he is wearing blue sunglasses.weird.
-
Also Bonham Carter/Burton collaborations too!
-
I guess this is Depp's first vampire role? But he's gonna play it like a restrained Jack Sparrow, I'm sure....meh
-
That's my favorite thing I've read on the Interweb this week.
-
...I think Russel Brand would have fit the Mad Hatter character much better than Depp as he is quite mad in his actual life it seems. Just saying. On the other hand, yeah Depp looks terrible in these photos. I am tired of these Depp/Burton collaborations. It's past time that they move on from one another. Though I am really looking forward to seeing Depp in being all Thompson-esq in The Rum Diary. He is great as this character.
-
This guy? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YGVLM2i9n6o/SevmMZ8n0hI/AAAAAAAACOI/8cpxGqHJuuM/s320/BarnabasCollinsDarkShadows+MB+1969.jpg Yeah I have no idea where this movie is going
-
in Tim Burton's remake of "Shock Treatment", or whatever the fuck...
-
Does anyone else get the impression that the only reason Burton keeps making movies is because he lost all creativity and banks on studios to hire him to make movies with in the Tim Burton style? He definitely has an eye for the outlandishly stylish (though I'm not liking this look for dark Shadows) but he has not directed a highly entertaining flick since the 90's. The closest he's come to achieving the same success in the past decade was Big Fish, everything else has just been fluff and reeked of paycheck movies!
-
Seriously, the guy is a one-trick pony. This is precisely what I expected this to look like if you've been paying attention to Burton at all.
-
Abominabas.
-
I agree-with a few exceptions. I know sometimes his films can be tedious, but I still like Zmichael Mann's work. Terry Gilliam still makes quality films, David Fincher...can't think of a lot of others off hand, but...
-
Before that it was ED WOOD. All his recent stuff has been utter shit.
-
He's 1 for, like, 14. ED WOOD is incredible -- obviously a fluke.

by Damned if I can login
Unreal popular. Incredibly successful. Kids in this country came unglued over it. An absolute phenomenon. It was damned original and it resonated bigtime. It's campy now, but not back then. It was frikkin' scary as shit to the kids watching it....not unlike the old eps of Dr. Who.
-
Burton and Depp have made so much money that they have completely lost track of what it is to be a true artist. It's a real shame since both are talented. Unfortunately, for us they are lazy talents wasting are time on so many potentially good projects. Burton has not made a good movie since Sleepy Hallow. Depp has either been just too freckin' weird (as Willy Wonka) or flat out boring (from Secret Window to The Tourist). Depp's idea of stretching is acting fetish obsessed gay. The last noteworthy performance was Once Upon a Time in Mexico. I was so looking forward to Dark Shadows. How sad it's just going to end up being another art director wet dream for Burton. I guess I'll have to stick to True Blood for the real thing.
-
Umm... DEEDILY deedily DEEDILY deedily, BOM bom BOM bom..." "Magnificent! Your best yet!
-
Its pretty obvious hes wearing blue shades under and a pair of eye glasses over the blue shades. Its really not that hard to see. Its not make up painted on. Other than that. Im over Burton. Especially colabing with Depp. Wheres Keaton? Bring him back and do something original again.

Alice in Wonderland was the last straw for me. Absolutely excruciating to watch. 20 years ago the thought of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland made me salivate, but after seeing last year's abomination that was it for me. He's been on steady decline post Batman (which does not hold up at all in my opinion.) Tim Burton has made 2 classics ( Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands). The rest are average to dreadful.
-
Oh yeah in response to my own above post, Ed Wood was pretty great, so make that 3 classics.
-
This is getitng beyond tiresome. Tim Burton is a HACK.
-
Pirates 4 made a shitload of money there. And they know that Euros love Michael Jackson...
-
But the Depp photos are weird.
-
... but Burton sucks to such depths that this doesn't create an equilibrium
-
Horrible! I hope this is not real. Are those painted on sideburns? Maybe it's just the bright light that makes the white skin look like... well, covered in white makeup. I remember coming home from grade school and watching Dark Shadows. I thought Depp would make a great Barnabas Collins, but not looking like that.
-
I kinda wish Burton had left this franchise alone. He doesn't have the sensibility for it. His films have a sort of dark campy feel that just doesn't fit Dark Shadows, which was cheesy only by virtue of being a soap opera, but not on purpose. And Depp is no Barnabas Collins.
-
That's my guess.
-
Sweeney Todd was great. Don't know what to think about this out of context picture.
-
so apologies.
-
As for Tim Burton, i gave up on the fucker after BIG FISH. i haven't seen any of his movies after that. Fuck Tim Burton, i'm beyond fed up with him. Any movie with him as director is a movie i'll not see. Still love ED WOOD and EDWARD SISSORHANDS, though.
-
Depp was cool in that one
-
yep yep.
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 2:37 p.m. CST
RELAX. HE MANAGED TO DO A GOOD REIMAGINING OF 'PLANET OF THE APES', DIDN'T HE?
by uberman
Why, Burton? Why even bother? Just change the characters names and the title an NO ONE will ever guess that DARK SHADOWS was your inspiration. Just call it 'ANIME VAMPIRE' or 'CLOWNMAN: DRINKER of BLOOD. Just leave Dark Shadows the fuck alone, alright?
-
why break the formula? Hollywood doesn't want to give up their cash cow combination. Depp has is a chameleon actor and keeps himself interesting by stepping into each of his character shoes and re invent them with his own twist. All this whining and complaining isn't going to bring you any closer to dictating which directions the film moves in. I wish the basement dwelling hack jobs would give it a rest already.
-
Clearly Barnabas is using zinc oxide as a vampire-grade sunblock. That or he's auditioning for Joker in the coming Batman reboot.
-
So much for that.
-
Sept. 14, 2011, 3:30 p.m. CST
Depp is not that great of a ''chameleon'' as people say.
by DoctorWho?
People say ''wow'' because he portrays outrageous and fantastic characters. Wild costumes and makeup is half the battle. His best work is when he plays real-world characters like in Finding Neverland.
Gary Oldman is a true chameleon...Daniel Day Lewis as well. Something as simple as Oldman's New York accent for Gordon in Nolan's Batman films is masterful. It's specific to one of the boroughs, I just don't know which.
-
Helena Bonham Carter. I can't stand that ho.
-
I'm hoping that this isn't an actual scene being shot, but just a pic of Depp and some chick walking to the set or something, and that the ridiculous hat and sunglasses are his own, NOT part of the character/costume. As someone mentioned earlier, it looks like he does have the signature Barnabas hair cut. That being said, the pancake make-up and lipstain is a bit worrisome, no matter how you slice it. I just went from fucking thrilled about this project, to having VERY LOW expecations. Till I see something more definitive, I'll try... god, I'll TRY... to reserve judgment.
-

disfigurehead, there was a time that Helena Bonham Carter ment you were going to watch a quality movie.
by AsimovLives
She is a fantastic actress, but she is ruining herself with Tim Fucking Burton.
-
He is obviously dressed and covered for a daytime walk (for whatever reason). Any other inference from the two photos is completely pointless carping.
-
That Burton has a real hard-on for that Depp!
-
Always incorporates a funny hat, or an exotic wig, or some weird make-up, or some eccentric body language, or a funny voice. Every time. Fuck this guy...
-
No fucking shit he's dressed for a day time stroll. Problem is, he looks like a freakish clown in that get-up regardless of what the reason is. And whoever the costume designer is should turn in their union card - the hat and coat don't match and her outfit looks like a used table cloth.
-
Agreed. He looks like Gary Olman's version. Aw gawd, why don't he and Burton just STOP!
-
Depps Mad Hatter was just a variation of Sparrow, one with a plug in his ass and a hat.
-
Someone asked who but Burton could have done a good adaptation, and I'll throw Whedon's name out there. He's done multiple characters, horror and is great with atmosphere and dialogue. Sure this is film, so he might not be up to it, but Burton? His whole shtick is the look of things, but he never gets the heart of the material or the tone right. I have no intention of seeing this, and that picture isn't doing anything to persuade me to do otherwise. Honestly, the whole franchise should probably be left to memories and glorious DVDs.
-
and yet the shit flies.
-
But I'm dancing on the valentine. I tell you somebody's fooling around with my chances on the dangerline.

The word "travesty' will have a new meaning if Depp gets to play Carl Kolchak.
-
Puke.
-
I have no idea what sort of tone they are going for with this, maybe it fits perfectly? It doesn't look like the Dark Shadows I know, but maybe they are doing something weird but still good with it?
-
Now I want to see someone actually make a movie called CLOWNMAN: DRINKER of BLOOD!
-
You know, Burton's Planet of the Apes was a movie on which he got so much studio interference that he cites it as one of the worst projects he's ever worked on. How can you blame him for it when he was getting so much hassle and problems from the studio? Just like with Raimi's Spider-Man 3 many of you fail to realize the director is NOT always in control of all aspects of a film when a lot of money is involved, and must bend and try to accommodate the stupidest of ideas from studio folks as best as he can.
-
when it comes out. can't be any worse than the miami vice adaption that came out five years ago. the movie brought back zero memories of my favorite cop show of all time, the best cop show in my opinion, but it was ok as an action flick. on the plus side naommie harris looks good naked
