The Behind the Scenes Pics of the Day remembers Cliff Robertson

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

Oh boy, did I mess up yesterday. In my hurry to get the BTS pic column posted I mistakenly wrote that today’s pic would remember Glenn Ford. My brain thought Cliff Robertson, but my hands typed Glenn Ford and when I went to post up today’s image I panicked a little bit. It was a big mistake and while it has been corrected, I feel like apologizing a couple more dozen times.

I’ve been watching a lot of Cliff Robertson movies recently, thanks to the next installment of my Vault Dweller column, and there’s just something real about him that I find it hard to put my finger on. He’s a man’s man, tough as nails, but handsome and with a great deal of emotion in his eyes. It’s no wonder that he was JFK’s pick to play the younger version of himself in the great PT-109.

Another role I’d like to point out is a smaller film he did with Henry Fonda called The Best Man in which the two play candidates vying for their party’s nomination for the presidency. It’s an incredibly timely movie about dirty politics and the price of playing fair. Robertson is amazing in the movie.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at today’s pic, which is one of the only pics of Robertson I found that was legitimately BTS. It’s from an Cerebral Palsy PSA that Robertson shot in 1977.

Thanks to Flickriver subscriber Whiskeygonebad for taking this shot and posting it for internet nerds like me to repost. Click hereto visit the original account and see the larger version of this image and to see a whole bunch more from this shoot!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at

Tomorrow I venture to LA for that big Hero Complex screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark with a Q&A by the one and only Steven Spielberg himself, so don’t be surprised if tomorrow’s pic reflects my day.

Yes, a great movie. He is great in it too. The way he interrogates that particular gentleman is mesmerizing.

Aww.. so sad. Charlie was amazing.

    by Playkins

Such a product of it's time in terms of style, tone. But so good. Cliff was incredible, as always. Might have to watch PT109 again soon.

    The story behind "Charley"...

by ames prather itself is the stuff of movies. He always struck me as an incredibly decent fellow; not too many "stars" manage that. ??Pseudo?? Out.

  • Sept. 12, 2011, 7:40 a.m. CST

The thing about Charly is that Robertson was the one

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

who bought the rights to the book, and made that happen. I never knew that until yesterday.

  • Sept. 12, 2011, 7:41 a.m. CST

You're right. Charlie is incorrect, but I forgot the e in Charley.

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

  • Sept. 12, 2011, 7:45 a.m. CST

Nope, I take it back, it was Charly. Which of course was a title change from

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

    "Flowers for Algernon."

Killed it as Hef in Star 80

Great, totally underappreciated, movie by the way. Has only had a bare bones DVD release. Would love to see a nice high def transfer.

Quint, You Suck and I Hate You

"Tomorrow I venture to LA for that big Hero Complex screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark with a Q&A by the one and only Steven Spielberg himself" . . . why not just round it out with the fact you just won a 100 million dollars in the lottery, had a menage-a-trois with a time-traveling Cindy Morgan (Yori, Lacey Underall) and Karen Allen (in the white silk nightgown from Raiders) from 1980, and now have super powers. Also, I was going to follow along with your Twilight Zone episode a week thing you were going to do. What happened with that? Doesn't matter. Either way, you suck.

Andy Whitfield, Dead at 3 Years Younger Than Me

Those folks really need to stop that. All that's doing is really hurting my actuarial table, and I'm really hoping to stay alive long enough to reach the Kurzweil singularity.

    Fuck you buckwheat

    by white_vader

Don't speak for the rest of us Aussies. You're a fuckwit. Nice display of class, arsehole. R.I.P. Cliff.

I'll always remeber that lesson in punctuation.

    @buckwheat3 you cant be serious

    by sunwukong86

Sure dying at such a young age is sad, but Cliff Robertson had a 60+ year career in Hollywood. You cant compare the two actors, its just unrealistic.

    How very random.

'Yeah, but will they print it'

    by Colin Dent

His two best roles were Cole Younger in 'The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid', and the uberdouche Higgins in 'Three days of The Condor' opposite Redford. In that movie he convinces you that the bad guys can always win. But he had a good innings and he left some quality performances so I say that's a fair exchange. Nasty 'comb-over' hairstyle though.

There was no Talkback for Andy Whitfield when we posted about his death. How oblivious ARE you?
