The Trailer For THE RAID... This Just May Be The Most Asskicking Film Since John Woo's HARD BOILED!
Nordling here.
I'm not in Toronto, but to the people that managed to see this... they may be some of the luckiest sons-of-bitches on the planet right now. THE RAID is directed by Gareth Evans (the tremendously awesome MERANTAU), and if you've seen HARD BOILED - the entire hospital sequence, for me, has yet to be topped in action cinema for sheer balls-to-the-wall awesomeness.
Well, this 2 minute trailer may have just done that. If the whole movie is as amazing as this trailer... you lucky Toronto sons-of-bitches.
I don't know when this opens in theaters, but it needs to be, like, yesterday. Easily the best trailer of the year for me. Nordling, out.

Now that's some tight editing. Very well done! It's got my money.

The irony is that this clip isn't available to people in Toronto
by bobo_vision
Or the rest of us Canadian bastards.
-
This looks solid.
-
That trailer was better than the waste of time that was Colombiana.
-
and comes no where close to equaling Hard Boiled.
"Shaky-cam" does not equal greatness.
Plus, those fight scenes looked over-rehearsed (not very spontaneous). -
It says Jan 19, 2012 in Indonesia on IMDB. INDONESIA? Hopefully it is as good as the trailer implies and gets picked up in Toronto for an earlier release.
-
Damn. I can't wait to hear if this manages to hold the same pace as the trailer. If so...I'm off to the cine.
??Pseudo??
Out. -
but a free library copy in about a year maybe...or just maybe if someone makes the top 5 action moments from that on youtube I'd watch it...
Plus, maybe they'll make an american version and call it the The Departed pt.2 -
...to ask Gareth Evans if he's interested in helming the new Batman series when WB reboots it in a few years?
What an awesome trailer. No idea what the movie is about, but thats some impressive action direction. -
Cuz I want an ounce. That came no where near topping a single shot of Hard Boiled. That steadicam shot at the start of the hospital shootout was brilliant. Not to mention Hard Boiled had characters and, you know, a plot.
While the action in the trailer was cool, that's all it was: action. Maybe they should try giving us an idea of what the movie is about in the next trailer. -

Fix your computer. I'm literally in downtown Toronto and I can watch this clip just fine. It's YouTube for Christ's sake. Looks like a great flick, anyhow. I've got a friend who's seeing this flick. He's seeing about 40 TIFF flicks this year. Affluent prick.
-
Saw "The Raid" at Midnight Madness in Toronto last night. Great crowd and great non-stop, bone-crunching ass-whupping film. They gave away two SWAT vests worn by actors in the film at the end; unfortunately I was too far away from the front to get through the feeding frenzy for them.
-
They're Indonesian, you douche.
-
maybe the worst trailer i've ever seen. oh wait...pay-per-view circa 1989 called, they want their "preview" back...

Looks more comparable to the ending of A Better Tomorrow II.
by gibsonusa returns
A ton of bullets does not automatically equal Hard Boiled.
-
...but the Untouchables quote doesn't fit as well with "Indonesian" inserted into it.
-
It was okay because of where it was coming from. But to compare it to John Woo's bests... it falls short.

Some people would say there's a thin line between art and pornography
by smokingrobot
I'm not one of them. This is just violence porn. Horrible violence made pretty and appealing to lost souls through the artifice of modern movie-making. Ultimately....it's trash.

Want to see this now.

Definitely on my watch list, now!

I think overall this type of movie is a natural progression of films as we become more and more inundated with cgi-fests, and now someone's finally saying 'no... noooooooooooooooo' and trying to create realistic albeit exaggerated violence and not the rubbery cartoons we keep getting. It's not porn by a long shot bra. And I'm impressed with the craftsmanship. I don't give a fuck if it has a story, this looks cool...
-
It is one of my greatest sins that I have not seen The Untouchables...
-
It's cool and all but the digital blood and flames kind of lessens the threat....
Hard Boiled is still better. -
Though I will admit that the trailer doesn't really feel like a 'trailer' but more of a 'best of' clip compilation. Great movie, though, no shaky cam, smart camera-work and editing
-
That was crazy insane! Hell, just by the trailer that looks way better than a lot of so called "action" movies Hollywood is spewing out now a days. The trailer did its job: it has my attention and now I want more.
-
Sep 10, 2011 3:32:29 AM CDT
i saw it at TIFF. easily the best action film made in the 22 years i've been alive
by thedark0knight
-
Looks pretty generic to me. Lots of bullets and shaky cam. Hand to hand fights look very rehearsed, which saps the tension right out of the scene.
Can't judge a movie by it's trailer, however, so I'll probably check it out. -
Nothing in that trailer came close to being as raw, intense, fucked up and brutal as the last 45 minutes of 13 Assassins.
They spent over an hour in that film selling you very meticulously on the realism of the damage that a sharp samurai sword can inflict (particularly the opening scene) and when the battle comes, you feel EVERY SINGLE CUT.
To me that makes it the best, most intense battle I've ever seen.
A gunfight can never seem as awesome anymore. -

This reminds me of all the hype this site threw around about that Clive Owen flick, Shoot 'em Ep
by stegman84
That was going to be a Woo killer too, if you'll pardon the pun. But people hardly even remember that film now. Hell, people hardly even remember one time hollywood 'it boy' Clive Owen now...
I think what some people forget is that action scenes aren't just about slow mo and cool looking shots edited well, they are also about nailing character and context. Don't see any of that here, but it is just a clip, so who knows... -
I woke up to that trailer sipping my morning cup of java and I have to say that had way more jolt in it than my charged up cup of joe!! Nice trailer.
-

zoefan - that Protector restaraunt scene is incredible!
by bubbadestructo
Even more impressive than the hallway fight scene in Oldboy. Amazing that the choreography was spot on throughout that scene, and how the camera was both able to track and do some cool things throughout. And the stunt work was amazing.
Definitely have to pick that film up. -
...they'll want to remake it, and butcher it.
-
About the level I would expect.
-
It's the only way I can show my support for film-making that isn't insultingly bad.
-
Directed by David Fincher, staring Donnie wahlbeg, Jared Leto, James vanderbeek, Paul walker, and captain Bruce Willis as the whispering Hurt commander who's daughter dies as a result of a drug overdose at the hands of the drug lords and HE WANTS REVENGE!!!!!!
-
It's the fuckin' best...
-
to say the least.
-
Because I already came to this trailer! RIMSHOT!
-
I agree with you. Looks like just a bunch of sadism and empty adrenaline-rushing with absolutely no point whatsoever.
-
Caught it at TIFF as well and remember how some of you neckbeards were whining that 13 Assassins wasn't up there with the best of the samurai genre and were promptly proven wrong? Get ready to sperg out again because this shit is next-level. Makes Ong Bak look like a Kate Hudson flick and definitely worth mentioning in the same sentence as Hard Boiled.
-
Woo shows what's it all about. NO FEAR!
-
That looks a hell of a lot like Tsui Hark's Time and Tide.
I'm digging the blend of Hark and Woo.
I'm there. -

How does a Welsh guy named Gareth Evans become a writer/director of Indonesian action movies?
by snootyboots
Sounds like Mr. Evans has led an interesting life.
-
The first half is a pretty fucking standard Hollywood-lite cop action flick, but once they're past that bullshit, and the martial arts starts, it's pretty fucking awesome. Still largely pointless, but damn, that Indonesian fighting style, silat is bloody impressive.
-
with robert pattinson, kristin stewart, fiddy, justine timberlake, jonah hill, zack efron, kevin james, and snooki as the drunk hooker.
-
I know some police raid goes down, and it all goes to shit or something. but i cant be sure exactly WHAT happens or get a sense of the beginning, middle and end of the film with all the beats. All I know is that it looks good, and Ill be sending the youtube link to friends I think would be interested in seeing it too.
THATS WHAT I WANT! THIS IS GREAT SHIT.
now, with that said, there are some extremely cliche shots in that trailer. the inside the van shot, the birds eye stairwell shot, etc. over used as fuck.
Still, Im excited by a well cut trailer. -
Sep 10, 2011 2:26:45 PM CDT

Looks OKAY, not that amazing, you guys are over-rating this
by miracle4ever
Its a VERY COOL trailer, I admit. But it also kinda looks like something that could be shit.
-
go back and rewatch it. It's just as cartoonish as this trailer. Bad guys practically leap into their bullets and run down hallways holding guns out to the side while they're getting blown away. The hospital scene is silly.
-
nothing short of awesome. I donæt know if it merits the Hard Boiled comparison. For my money, the end of A Bullet in the Head was more traumatic. Nevertheless, I sooooo want to see this now and honestly for it being it's own thing rather than an homage to anything Woo has done.
-
looks very interesting
-
But its actually kinda crap now.
Its really silly and cartoonish. Its a little embarrassing. Also notice John Woo ended up being crap. -
I wish he would do one more badass modern cop movie before he retires...Expendables, Die Hard 5...a sequel to an established franchise that will get his movie attention, but unlike MI2, is allowed to be R rated, as all Woo movies should be.
-
is still my favorite action sequence of all time. I know everyone talks about the hospital but for me it's all about when Phillip Kwok and his goons ride into the warehouse and shoot the living shit out of everybody, and then later when Chow Yun Fat repels down from the ceiling and kills at least 50 people with a SMG. Anyway - to the topic at hand...THE RAID trailer is an amazing piece of art itself and I can't wait to see the full film. Merantau Warrior was a great martial arts movie but Gareth Evans and Iko Uwais seem to have taken everything up a notch - way, way up. It looks to combine the best aspects of Merantau with some nice John Woo and Jason Bourne influence.

This is the next Hard Boiled. Attack The Block the next Jaws...
by bantuwind
Can we stop with the ridiculous comparisons and over-hyping already?
And for those who "grew up" and now think Hard Boiled is trash. What about the Killer? It has the plot, it has the characters, and it has the action.
What's next. You watched Terminator 2 for the first time since 6th grade and thought that was silly too? C'mon...bunch of 19 year olds going through the "everything I liked when I was younger was trash" phase. -
That alone makes me interested. Zack Snyder should learn from this, but then, without slow-mo he'll have to fill the movie with - plot and characters.
-

There is no way the hyper fast editing action can compare to Hard-Boiled
by bravo2bng
Some of the action scenes look alright but it just doesn't have the style of the John Woo classics. It'll probably be entertaining though, you can never tell just by watching a trailer.
-
...has got me sold! Had to make an account just to express how great this looks. Based on the first reviews, I'm very excited! Not just the violence and choreography but the way that it's filmed (shots like 1:06 for instance). Hard Boiled ties with Die Hard for best action film in my opinion.
-
Todd brown with Twitch is one of the producers, so of course they all like it. That would be akin to Harry producing a film and AICN reviewing it. That doesn't mean it doesn't look cool. It looks like it can be fantastic.
-
Actually they say its a fine line. But you're good, you did what was expected.
-
but this looks ok
-
It's better than Hard Boiled. But the Killer is similarly silly, and cartoonish, with horrible and cliched Woo directing.
It was cool in the sixth grade, but it's just embarrassing now.
There's a reason all most all of Woos hollywood films are garbage, cuz he is garbage himself. -
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/motion-captured/posts/review-torontos-midnight-madness-kicks-off-with-the-raid
99% of the time, he and I are in sync. I'm guessing that I'm gonna enjoy this one, too. That trailer was awesome, fuck the naysayers. Yeah, that's right: FUCK YOU, NAYSAYER. -
In Hard Boiled, that's my favorite from that movie. Still think Woo's best is the end of The Killer.
That said, this movie is not all shaky cam, shut up whiners. You can clearly see all the action. Maybe the fighting does look a bit rehearsed, but most do.
And acting like the "characters" an "story" is why anyone likes Hard Boiled...yeah right. That had the worst cliched shitty plot and the characters were just standard Woo tragic sort of sad badasses. And some of that movie is CHEESY. Let me guess, anyone proclaiming Hard Boiled to be untouchable is about 38, right? -
Sep 12, 2011 9:04:46 AM CDT
Looks great. And will someone give Freddy Wong a hollywood career, please.
by fireclown
When it's not full of videogames, this is what it looks inside Wong's head most of the time.
-
Puts Hollywood's obsession with wire-assisted, slow mo stuntwork to shame. Only quibble was some pretty bad CGI during the explosion/fireball. Hope this gets a respectable theatrical release
-
The Killer is best, Hard Boiled right up there, Face/Off, Bullet In The Head, great man
-
Fuck shakey cam
-
For different reasons:
A Better Tomorrow - the best for storyline and character in my opinion. Great action, but the film wins on delivering a touching tale of brotherhood
Hard Boiled - pure unadulterated action and Woo's shootouts has never been better. The story is totally generic and the characters not emotionally engaging though.
The Killer- a fantastic balance between the first two, though never really topping ABT for character or HB for action.
-
One guy above nailed it with the comment about "remember all the hype around Shoot Em Up?" I totally DO remember all the hype, and that movie turned out to be all kinds of meh.
That said, I'm excited that McWeeny liked it, he at least gives some cred. Will definitely see it, but am not going to blind-buy on bluray unless it's over 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. -
Now this looks like an action movie I can sink my teeth into!!!!! I can't even remember the last time I saw an amazing action movie. True Lies maybe?
-
Inspired homage/skit on the classic Woo move. -
