The Trailer For THE RAID... This Just May Be The Most Asskicking Film Since John Woo's HARD BOILED!

Published at:  Sep 09, 2011 8:52:37 PM CDT

Nordling here.

I'm not in Toronto, but to the people that managed to see this... they may be some of the luckiest sons-of-bitches on the planet right now.  THE RAID is directed by Gareth Evans (the tremendously awesome MERANTAU), and if you've seen HARD BOILED - the entire hospital sequence, for me, has yet to be topped in action cinema for sheer balls-to-the-wall awesomeness.

Well, this 2 minute trailer may have just done that.  If the whole movie is as amazing as this trailer... you lucky Toronto sons-of-bitches.

I don't know when this opens in theaters, but it needs to be, like, yesterday.  Easily the best trailer of the year for me.  Nordling, out.

Cuz I want an ounce. That came no where near topping a single shot of Hard Boiled. That steadicam shot at the start of the hospital shootout was brilliant. Not to mention Hard Boiled had characters and, you know, a plot.

While the action in the trailer was cool, that's all it was: action. Maybe they should try giving us an idea of what the movie is about in the next trailer.

Saw "The Raid" at Midnight Madness in Toronto last night. Great crowd and great non-stop, bone-crunching ass-whupping film. They gave away two SWAT vests worn by actors in the film at the end; unfortunately I was too far away from the front to get through the feeding frenzy for them.

I think overall this type of movie is a natural progression of films as we become more and more inundated with cgi-fests, and now someone's finally saying 'no... noooooooooooooooo' and trying to create realistic albeit exaggerated violence and not the rubbery cartoons we keep getting. Looks pretty generic to me. Lots of bullets and shaky cam. Hand to hand fights look very rehearsed, which saps the tension right out of the scene.

    13 Assassins

    by hellsfoxes

Nothing in that trailer came close to being as raw, intense, fucked up and brutal as the last 45 minutes of 13 Assassins.

They spent over an hour in that film selling you very meticulously on the realism of the damage that a sharp samurai sword can inflict (particularly the opening scene) and when the battle comes, you feel EVERY SINGLE CUT.

To me that makes it the best, most intense battle I've ever seen.

A gunfight can never seem as awesome anymore.

The warehouse sequence in Hard Boiled

    by billemic

is still my favorite action sequence of all time. I know everyone talks about the hospital but for me it's all about when Phillip Kwok and his goons ride into the warehouse and shoot the living shit out of everybody, and then later when Chow Yun Fat repels down from the ceiling and kills at least 50 people with a SMG. Anyway - to the topic at hand...THE RAID trailer is an amazing piece of art itself and I can't wait to see the full film. Merantau Warrior was a great martial arts movie but Gareth Evans and Iko Uwais seem to have taken everything up a notch - way, way up. It looks to combine the best aspects of Merantau with some nice John Woo and Jason Bourne influence.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Can we stop with the ridiculous comparisons and over-hyping already?

And for those who "grew up" and now think Hard Boiled is trash. What about the Killer? It has the plot, it has the characters, and it has the action.

What's next. You watched Terminator 2 for the first time since 6th grade and thought that was silly too? C'mon...bunch of 19 year olds going through the "everything I liked when I was younger was trash" phase.

99% of the time, he and I are in sync. I'm guessing that I'm gonna enjoy this one, too. That trailer was awesome, fuck the naysayers. Yeah, that's right: FUCK YOU, NAYSAYER.

I agree about the warehouse shootout

    by mrgiant

In Hard Boiled, that's my favorite from that movie. Still think Woo's best is the end of The Killer.

That said, this movie is not all shaky cam, shut up whiners. You can clearly see all the action. Maybe the fighting does look a bit rehearsed, but most do.

And acting like the "characters" an "story" is why anyone likes Hard Boiled...yeah right. That had the worst cliched shitty plot and the characters were just standard Woo tragic sort of sad badasses. And some of that movie is CHEESY. Let me guess, anyone proclaiming Hard Boiled to be untouchable is about 38, right?

  • When it's not full of videogames, this is what it looks inside Wong's head most of the time.

    Damn Exciting Stuff

Puts Hollywood's obsession with wire-assisted, slow mo stuntwork to shame. Only quibble was some pretty bad CGI during the explosion/fireball. Hope this gets a respectable theatrical release

    John Woo is the man

The Killer is best, Hard Boiled right up there, Face/Off, Bullet In The Head, great man

    The 3 best Woo films:

    by wingkong85

    For different reasons:

A Better Tomorrow - the best for storyline and character in my opinion. Great action, but the film wins on delivering a touching tale of brotherhood

Hard Boiled - pure unadulterated action and Woo's shootouts has never been better. The story is totally generic and the characters not emotionally engaging though.

The Killer- a fantastic balance between the first two, though never really topping ABT for character or HB for action.

    Looks fucking sweet but...

One guy above nailed it with the comment about "remember all the hype around Shoot Em Up?" I totally DO remember all the hype, and that movie turned out to be all kinds of meh.

That said, I'm excited that McWeeny liked it, he at least gives some cred. Will definitely see it, but am not going to blind-buy on bluray unless it's over 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
