Sundance Report: The Maus reports in on... DARK DAYS
Aha! A Lynn sighting! At last. Lynn will be filing a ton of Post-Sundance reports as it seems her computer has been... non-functioning. Sigh. But, here is proof that she was indeed there, as another spy... The Maus, spotted her. As for this documentary, DARK DAYS... Personally, I have to say that a film about the people that live beneath the surface of New York, in train tunnels... well, it has me right there. Are they the C.H.U.D. of Nick's fantasies... or do they come out at night, beating on manhole covers and pursue Plissken? Or... are they simply human beings with no desire to fit in with 'regulars' above? This sounds fascinating...
I ran into Lynn Braken on a Sundance bus and let her know how much I love
your site. And now, I'm back. I see that Sundance reports are trickling in.
I just want to share my experience with Dark Days. This has to be one of the
most intense, harrowing documentaries I have ever seen. It is about people
living in the New York City Amtrak tunnels. Shot in 16mm black and white, it
is a stunning exploration of how people form community in the darkest of
places. It explores not only their bonds, but how they manage to survive.
I'm a professor at NYU and I am sure that this documentary will become a
seminal work. professors and teachers across the country will use this as an
example of socially conscious documentary, of filmmaking methods and
social/political commentary.
And the film has two unexpected bonuses. it is NOT preachy and it has a
happy ending.
It was very interesting to hear the filmmaker speak afterwards. He ended up
moving into the tunnel for two years and the people he was documenting
became his crew (not something you find out in the film).
Amazing.

CHUD'S, huh? I don't doubt that they have their own society, because the book Reliquary by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (RIPTIDE) claims that New York's system of catacombs is larger in area than any uncharted area of land in the world.
-Just some trivial crap for ya!

I found out about this movie this morning because I'm on a mailing list for DJ SHADOW who, despite a full schedule was asked by Marc Singer, the 1st time director of this to do the music.
SO you can go to www.darkdays.com and see it for yourself. It's a VERY bitchin flash press packet. There are snippets of 2 NEW DJ SHADOW tracks. This is like saying... there's 2 new Kubrick films on the site. Harry, Father Geek, Robo, Moriarity and co -- if you HAVEN'T gone out and bought Shadow's "Endtroducing..." album yet, you absolutely must. I am not kidding. Also Shadow did the music for the U.N.K.L.E. "Psyence Fiction" album. 2 tracks in Dark Days (and on the website) are reworkings of UNKLE tracks, a bunch from "Endtroducing..." and 2 are NEW.
Summary here: Dark Days website (essentially a press packet online) using Macromedia Flash and very, very cool. DJ Shadow very, very cool and trust me, LOTS of filmmakers are gonna tap him. Lastly, endtroducing.com has a track listing. -
Will every aspiring film maker in America be going down into subways to film like everybody did with the Blair Witch Project by going into the woods.I hope not!!!

I wonder why directors haven't embraced total scores by new music composers, such as DJ Shadow, Orbital, Moby, etc. Sure, Event Horizon, The Matrix, Blade, etc. had techno-industrial cues. Sure, Fight Club had an amazing score by the Dust Brothers. These are unfortunate exceptions. I for one am ready for a mature, mass-appeal film scored by new music composers. Actually, something even cooler would be to see established composers--Williams, Revell, Kamen, Burwell, etc.--experiment a little with sample-based technology.

England sucks. You can't win a war without us unspohisticated farting yanks there to save your ass. Instead
of kissing up to that old dyke queen you have you'd be doing a sieg hiel to the Fuhrer right now if it wasn't for
America defending your ass. We're colonizing Mars and you so-called sophisticated people are still worshipping a
Queen who pays little or no taxes. Princess Di? Who cares about that spoiled bitch? So what if she died in a car
crash? That rich spoiled bitch could never stop whining, I'm glad the paparazzi shut her up. America is 2-0 against
your poor excuse for a country. Revolutionary War not a war? What the fuck kind of history textbooks were you
reading in school? The war lasted 7 years and hundreds of thousands of people died in it. We were on the side of
right and beat your ass. The English broke a couple of Nazi codes? So fucking what? Neville Chamberlain, the
typical English coward, chose to appease Hitler prior to the war by giving the Nazis land. What a brilliant idea!
Ever see Braveheart? A bunch of Scottish hillibilles armed with clubs and hammers defeated your army. You
English think you so much better than everyone, not just us Americans but also the Irish, Indians and the rest of
the world for that matter. The biggest mistake America ever made was dropping the bomb on Hiroshima, we
should have dropped it on London instead. We wouldn't have so many whiny British actors in movies today. They
only good thing that ever come out of your shitty little island was the Spice Girls. -
Golgo, if you're going to be a living example of every stereotype the rest of the world has about Americans, at least you can have the decency to be embarrassed about it. Your trailer awaits, sir.

Fuck those limey bastards! I was happy when I hard Princess Di kicked the bucket and I'm proud of it!

I am British, English to be exact, and I find it simply impossible to read golgo's absurdly limited assault, without response. The old, 'we'd be under Hitler's rule if it wasn't for Americans yawn yawn fucking yawn, let me talk about honor(as you spell it) you sad virgin bastard, specifically, the gulf war, when your oh so heroic pilots too shit scared to fly ay anything less than a million feet, managed to incinerate more European troops than the Iraqis, oh and your government didnt even have the simple HONOR to allow the pilots to attend the 'Friendly Fire' court hearings, even when all the families of these men wanted was an apology in person-nothing more.By the way, speaking as a well Nuclear armed Nation, you call english people cowards?-two things to chew on fat boy-1)what do you call blowing up two japanese cities filled with women and children? 2)I dont remeber the Americans'help from 500bc to the 1500s when we conquered the Roamns the Spanish the French and every other country you can think of, but then that Portugese fella hadnt even discovered America then had he?.

Excuse me, but did I miss something? Were some posts deleted or what? How did we go from the discussion of Dark Days to the American Revolution part 2: The Sequel? Jesus, these talkbacks are sure filled with a bunch of foul-mouthed losers. Not that I have anything against that, being a foul-mouthed loser myself, but come on. I thought America and the UK were supposed to be on the same side here. Can't we all just get along?
-
Yes, I'm an American. And yes, I'm shocked by the ignorance that Golgo just happened to write here. I think he did so for two reasons A)he has a deep seated fear of the English, or B)he's trying to think that he's funny. Either way, his ignorance abounds and is embarrassing to any other American. C'mon my English friends, there are jerks here in America, just like there are in Britain, but I guess those jerks just don't talk about it.--Saulot--
-
Yeah, Golgo, the American Revolution was technically not a war; it was a REVOLUTION! Just like the Russian Revolution of 1917 or the Year of Revolutions in 1848. A revolution and a war are entirely different things. If you want people to actually respect your opinions, you can't compare something from the 1930s-40s (WW2) to something almost 400 years earlier! It just shows how ignorant you are. Yes, the British have done some dumb things, but Americans have done worse. We dropped the bomb, put Native Americans in camps, put Japanese in CONCENTRATION CAMPS during WW2, and we're still lying to the American Public. So,just shut your mouth, Golgo, or you'll just prove what a moron you are.--Saulot--
-
indeed, I agree and I would never judge America or it's people by one ignoramus, I personally have never been but I'd love to visit your country.
And as someone else pointed out, we ARE on the same side, whether some would like it or not,we share too many cultural similarities, now perhaps more than ever.I wasn't directly attacking American actions, God knows Engalnd is as guilty as any country for it's humanitarian atrocities, but sometimes it astounds me that certain people still think like this Golgo character, they are dangerous people, and we can do without their input on this site.
America is great, and England is great, united we are unstoppable as has been proved in no uncertain terms.Saulot I salute you Sir, Golgo you urgently require a library membership(or an account with Amazon).

Imagine for the moment you are the host of a nationally recognized website. Imagine that site is the source for scoops on upcoming projects and unadulterated film comment - allowing input from the audience itself on a site that is read at every level of the industry. Imagine creating such a stir that film makers and studios alike try - and fail - to shut you down. Imagine you triumph. What would happen then? A possible scenario would involve the studios changing tactics - as studios often do, despite the popular opinion - because while they don't make movies more ways than one, they know how to skin a cat. The studios would invite you to premiers, include you in note sessions, put your face in the paper, rope you into development deals, by the rights to your life, erase your precious anonymity (which, despite its practical applications was a principal motivator in the creation of your site in the first place) and - like all corporations do with the competition in the end - they co-opt you.
Then, the tail starts to wag the dog. To curry favor and get the honest to goodness deep inside information, you have to chug outrageous amounts of studio head. You can't be too abrasive - or even honest - for fear of being cut off. You can only elude to films you didn't like - usually after they have come out and failed - and you even find ways to "forgive" the odd bomb. Soon, your aw-shucks facade becomes almost comical. Your tragic attempts at humilty and incredulous gratutude for the way things have turned out make you the cartoon icon that is the banner on your home page.
Pretty soon, people start to take notice - but their criticism are put down as quickly as they spring up, because like a good studio, you have learned the power of bad press and rush to quell it. In fact, in many ways you have become what you have beheld. You forget that what you started out to do was improve film by exposing its weaknesses and instead, you have become a media-whore. You have injected so much of your own personality into your work, that your work IS your personality. Your comment becomes a relfection on yourself and not the medium. In short - you have sold you soul. You forget that you made yourself and they were afraid of you. You overlook your own rapidly swelling irrelevance. None of your scoopers on the inside are telling you that no one is afraid anymore. No one is checking in with you for fear of what you know, but what you don't. Hollywood has long since breathed a sigh of relief, knowing they can check in on you and your utterly pathetic, blind and uninformed cronies and see that nothing about their film is there - it's all about you.
But hey, you have what you want. You are recognized the world over. You have found a large enough cadre of dolts to justify your self agrandizement. You even foolishly believe in the back of your mind that this is a transition - a stepping stone and not your honest and admirable calling. You think, one day, you'll get to tell your story, and then you'll show 'em. You'll change the system from within.
And like every idiot in every movie from Citizen Kane to Episode One, you will be the only one to overlook your undoing. The audience will sit back and shake their heads and when the lights ome up, they will forget you like Godzilla.
And late at night, when you lie awake inbed and stare at the ceiling, you know exactly who you are. You have fleeting glimpses of the truth and you swat them away like flies. Because movies in this day and age aren't about the truth. They are about fame.
and somewhere...
out there...
The studios will go about their business, and they won't even taste you when they belch.
Harry. It's about the movie's, old man. Nothing else.
Tell the truth.
