Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson together again at last! The Rum Diary trailer is great!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. As a die hard fan of Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and of Johnny Depp's approach at adapting the autobiographical characters of Hunter S. Thompson, I am so ready to see The Rum Diary.
It's been in the can for a while and that has led to some speculation that it isn't very good. Now, we finally see a trailer and I can't say anything about the finished film, but the trailer itself is pretty damned exciting.
I mean, Depp has his Thompson voice on, which automatically makes me partial to the trailer and then the craziness of the bits and pieces we see leads me to think just maybe the film will end up being close to the same crazy fun universe glimpsed in Fear and Loathing.
"Try and look normal!" Alright, I'm in.

Depp is both sellout and artist. Somehow.

Love the book, and love Depp's HST voice, but...
by CRISPIN_GLOVERS_ACID_FLASHBACK
Looks like Bruce Robinson took a lot of liberties with the adaptation.
-
It looks perfect.
-
Now let me watch the damn trailer.
-
...be still, my throbbing cock. err, beating heart. I'm a sucker for a good alcohol-and-drug-fueled-bender-on-the-road movie. I truly doubt this lives up to "Loathing," but fortunately, it doesn't appear to be trying to be that movie. but a be-jeweled turtle and Richard Jenkins in a wig definitely had me chuckling.

That looks fucking awesome!!! I love the fact that Depp is playing Paul Kemp as a young HST...I was afraid he would make him a different character

Johnny handpicked Bruce Robinson as director because Withnail and I is one of his favorite films
by Bobo_Vision
-
Because a Hunter S Thompson can not exist in it any more. There will never be another HST. Or...maybe, just maybe with a dream and an old Royal typewriter...and a quart of tequila, a fist fulla' pills and some small explosives...maybe I could be the next HST. But chances are I would just wake my kids up and piss my wife off.
-
Fucking Disney whore.......fuck this movie.
-
Fear and Loathing was a mindtrip, I can't wait to see this con las drogas
-
I have two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Lets watch a movie!
-
Looks like crazy fun. I doubt it'll be another Fear & Loathing, but I also doubt it is trying to be. Still, Hunter S Thompson by way of Withnail & I's Bruce Robinson, with Depp back in his Hunter persona. Hell, it's got my ticket money anyway.
-
who the fuck would say that about a boat? it's the absolute worst double entendre I've ever heard. Well, since Johnny Depp's last movie "i agree with the missionary's position" Run...mermaid...Johnny Depp....where's Geoffry Rush embarrassing himself?
-
The book is a great read too. I highly recommend. Good ol' Lotterman.
-
I think he may have woken up from hit shit sleep!

A grizzled old man was eating in a truck stop when three Hell's Angels bikers walked in.
by Tigger Tales
The first biker approached the old man, threw his cigarette into the old man's pie, and then took a seat at the counter. Then, a second biker walked over to the old man, spit into his glass of milk, and then took a seat at the counter. Finally, a third biker verbally attacked the old man, knocked his plate of food into his lap, and then took a seat at the counter. Without a word of protest, the old man quietly left the diner. Shortly thereafter, one of the bikers commented to the waitress, 'Not much of a man, is he?" The waitress replied, 'Not much of a truck driver either. He just backed his truck over three motorcycles."

this has the potential to be absolutely great.

Or least two years ago. Time is weird at BNAT. I could've actually been to BNAT the 13th or BNAT 21. The Alamo has time machines built into the seats.

having never really seen any Amber Heard movies to begin with...
by TheSeeker7
much past Pineapple Express I think, I only very recently discovered that miss Heard has been kind of enough to leave her clothes behind in the wardrobe department on several of her films, not unlike my favorite actress in the world, Kate Winslet. Needless to say, I've since been downloading a number of DVD rips of Amber Heard movies...

Looks like an appropriate representation of my country. I've been waiting for this movie for a while, since it was announced all those years ago. Hope it's actually good.

Kemp is not supposed to be a "young HST"
by CRISPIN_GLOVERS_ACID_FLASHBACK
HST wrote "Rum Diary" when he was 22, but the character of Kemp was an older journalist...at the end of the book Kemp and his compatriots talk about being "over the hill"...I was really hoping Depp would play the character as an older Raoul Duke.
-
I didn't really love Fear and Loathing (plan to give it another chance soon though)... this one looks a little more accessible.
-
Seems like this movie has been in limbo for ages.

I'd see the one where he had Ralph Steadman on pills spray-painting "fuck the pope" on the side of an Aussie yacht.
by Pvt. Duke
Steadman winds up broke and shoeless in New York, the magazine that hired him shuttered. Or a movie about their friendship would be able to cherry-pick some of the funniest bits involving the two.

shame about the casting, having Heard in it as his love interest as well as not having Benicio for his attorney.

Depp took a break from pirating and Tim Burton asshole-licking
by la_sith
Unfortunately, it's too late. I can't take him serious anymore. Sorry, dude. Too many paychecks for too many shit movies. That's ok. I'm sure he doesn't give a fuck.

It wasn't a slavishly boring substitute for the book, which is 100 times more exciting to read, at all. Sorry Johnny: pile of crap.

Can I propose a new venture into the world of movie going? Introducing the new "leD" card. It is very similar to RR's 4D card. Only this one will take you on a trip beyond the screen. I honestly think it will take off. They could also maybe use the idea on movies that are excruciatingly AWFUL. Anything to occupies one mind on something other than the shit they are watching. Just a thought.
-
lsD even :)
-
neither do we!!
-
Robinson deserves a big hit. He's one talented motherfucker.
-
They had me sold half way through and have just spoilt some great scenes. Sometimes less is more.
-
His work (not counting Withnail and I) is massively overlooked - hopefully this will get him some more recognition and a few more high-profile projects. I wholly recommend Smoking in Bed, a book of interviews with Robinson.
-
Trailer most excellent. And the latest updates are here on on http://www.rumdiaryfilm.com

but i don't remember it having this wacky/rip roaring vibe at all. Could still be a fun movie though.

Great to nkow that Bruce Robinson has made a new movie. And god damn, that's Amber Heard!! WOW!!! SHE'S THE SEX!!!
by AsimovLives
So, is this a prequel of FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS? (and yes, i know, THE RUM DIARIES were writen earlier... i think).
-
Aug. 26, 2011, 7:06 a.m. CST
FEAR AND LAOTHING IN LAS VEGAS is a great movie and a great adaptation of a great book. It's also one of the funniest movies i ever seen
by AsimovLives
Me and my friends were rolling in our seats with laughter when we first saw it in the theater. It's also on eof the most beautiful hymns of a country's missed oportunity. All countries have that, and with some luck there will be a poet that will put it to posterity. Thompson did it for the 60s in FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. And so did Gilliam with the movie adaptation. Extremely funny and very moving.

Pirates 4 I'm waiting to judge when it hits redbox, but even saying that means something...one of the most fun films I've ever seen was the original Pirates and to think Redbox would be where the latest sequel ends up for me is just sad...but.. Pirates 3 was lame...too large, too Matrix Revolutions, forgot about fun...plus the crab girl (NOT hot btw, can't believe she's a Bond girl) just creeped me out. Since then I don't think I've liked a single movie he's been in Yes that includes Public Enemies...sure he did a good job but gangster movies that have a wealth of real story and tons of interesting facts that decide "Nah, we'll go our own way" just don't earn my respect...(like killing Frank Nitti via library rooftop) But FINALLY a movie where he can do his comic thing and we can actually laugh, not wonder why he's being funny in a dangerous looking environment (Tourist-why was that nominated for anything??)
-
eventually I wanted to get to Amber Heard but I felt like my comment was getting too long....again...thank you asimovlives Ever since Never Back Down (underrated imo, was actually a decent Rocky for teens like how Swimfan was Fatal Attraction for teens)...she's been on the Celebrity 5 radar for me...Number one now and forever will be Danielle Fishel, followed by Emma Watson and Miranda Kerr and Jane Seymore.... anywho...ya...Amber Heard looking amazing, as always...(yes even in Zombieland she was smokin)... Oh and Drive Angry was really fun...I've said that a lot on posts recently (Thanks to DRIVE coming out soon, which I'm excited for)...she was hot in that too.
-
At least it's not a superhero movie.
-
This looks like soulless tripe— just like everything Depp's done since he had that dude killed.
-
He must mean those three kids who were killed in West Memphis in 1993. Evidence suggests Depp was involved.

I knew Depp always supported their innocence, but not that he killed a guy?
-
not a bloated middle aged man.
-
or killed him himself. one of those two.
-
The first film was way more kinetic in its direction, and a shaved headed Depp had crucial chemistry with a bloated Benicio Del Toro that worked. There's no deny this. Granted this is a different story, but this film comes off as modern and by the numbers. Depp sounds and looks tired in his delivery. The elements Do strangely sound like the last Pirates film, which will taint it even further...and god help the soundtrack selections. This looks like "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations: The Movie" more than it does a Hunter Thompson epic.
-
Kudos to the producer and editor.
-
It looks horrible. Just a vanity project for a shitty middle aged man to pretend he is a young twenty year old.
-
Watched that again recently. The first hour is still really good. But I had forgotten how much it descends into a big-budget A-Team episode by the end...rather dull extended shootouts with clunky editing. I guess that marked the moment where Johnny Depp's destiny lay in movies that were more about comedy than action, for much of the next decade. I was so hopeful when Pirates of the Caribbean came out that it heralded the return of both Depp and Rush as genuinely comedic guys. But it was a false dawn for both.
-
I'm in it for the director. Will definitely be there.
-
Is it a sequel (Depp is older)? Is it a prequel (the book was written first)? Or is the casting of Johnny Depp just an allusion to the previous film without implying a canonical link?
-
Best movie of the year. Thank you Tyler Perry.

I don't recall his age being mentioned in the book... It is about a specific time in Hunter's life but he revisited the novel at least 20 years after originally writing it. It was not published as is from the 1960 version. I think it has a lot to do with approaching middle age, no?
-
This looks dead-on perfect.

-
Screwjack... The fact he put that out to publish was a sign that the good doc needed some extra cash in the twilight years.
-
It's called the movie BUSINESS, jackoffs. Besides, The guy reads books to children in his Jack Sparrow character. He obviously gets a kick out of playing it. Fucking cum stains on this site will hate on anything.
-
http://americanmafia.com/Featu re_Articles_285.html If you don't wanna read that whole thing (scroll about halfway down to get to the part about Johnny Depp), the gist is that all signs point to him having a guy named Anthony Fox killed. Fox was his partner in owning the LA nightclub the Viper Room.
-
Like EVERYBODY IS - Given the right price people will sell out. I dont know ONE PERSON who will stick to their old BS low paying job when offered a new higher paying one...Its just math and the capitalist attitude of America: Hand in Hand. Dick in Hand. Dick in ASS.
-
Don't get why some people don't like it. It's just different than F&L. And btw. I know people in their twenties that look older than Depp in this trailer to be honest.
-
There's no evidence that Johnny had his co-owner of the Viper Room, Anthony Fox, killed. He just happened to disappear after suing Johnny.
Now, having said that, I think it's possible that someone who was friends with Johnny (he has a lot of friends who love him) may have offed Fox and then told Johnny about it afterwards and the favor they had done for him. But it sounds like the Viper Room had a lot of shady characters and drug dealers hanging around there so there are probably a lot of characters who could have done this.

Paul Kemp is 31 in RUM DIARY, not early twenties
by CRISPIN_GLOVERS_ACID_FLASHBACK
I just pulled my copy of the book off the shelf because of the people in this talkback saying that the character is in his early 20s. HST was in his early 20s when he wrote the book, but the last chapter establishes that Kemp is "almost thirty-two".
