Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Harry already posted about the biggest news to come out of the big D23 presentation today. Pixar has two original projects in the works, which is big news just by itself since Brave will be the first original Pixar film since 2009’s UP and there was a worry that with Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Monsters University in the works that Pixar was turning into a sequel factory.
Not so much, it seems.
I don’t have too much more detail than Harry did, but I can recount the panel a bit.
Let’s look at The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs (which is what the logo actually said, complete with a Bronto silhouette against the last three or four words), which will be directed by longtime Pixar talent Bob Peterson, writer of Up, Finding Nemo and Ratatouille and voices of Roz from Monsters Inc, Mr. Ray from Finding Nemo and Dug from Up.
All of these characters he did voices of before announcing the project. SQUIRREL!!!
The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs will be released Holiday 2013 and explore what would have happened had dinosaurs not been wiped out, if that asteroid had missed our planet.
UPDATE: For clarification, I believe they said it was what a modern day society would be like had that event not happened... I assume not caveman times, but today today, so no Flintstones comparisons (hopefully).
They showed one concept painting to go along with this, it was a brontosaurus standing in a field against a sunset. The color was golden, no detail on the dino could really be made out, but part of the silhouette betrayed what looked like a little girl sitting on the dinosaur’s head, just before the neck dips down.
Peterson said he has been fascinated with dinosaurs since the NY World’s Fair when he saw the Imagineering dinosaurs, so he found it particularly interesting that here he is decades later developing a dinosaur movie for Disney.
The second film will be a reunion of the producer/director team from Up. Pete Docter, the director, and Jonas Rivera, the producer. When they went to reveal their title this came up on the screen: “The Untitled Pixar Movie That Takes You Inside The Mind.”
Looking to be released Summer 2014, they were cagey with details, but did say the film will explore why we remember certain things, why we forget, why we get songs stuck in our heads. Docter said we’ve all seen people that make us go, “What were they thinking!?!” This will help answer those questions.
The only images to go along with this one was a cheekbones up shot of a man (who could have been Docter himself… it probably was) whose eyeballs were looking straight up, as if looking at his forehead.
Wish I had more details for you, but that’s all they said at the panel! So now you know!
