RED TAILS has a poster & a second action packed trailer!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... if you're like me - you've been hearing about George Lucas' produced RED TAILS for what seems like decades. I've been dying to see it for pretty much the duration, because of Lucas' well known love of aerial combat - and getting to see a really great WWII fighter plane story - as though it were ripped from the pages of WINGS or ACES HIGH... well, sign me up.
The last solid Aerial combat flick was that RED BARON flick, which just didn't capture me. I'm pulling for this to blow me away though.

Great SFX, terrible dialogue and plot.
-
radio takes to the skies!
-
No more...please?!!?
-
Not so sure about some of that dialogue though. Lucas will probably say it's been "stylized" that way on purpose or some shit.
-
But I'm pretty stoked.
-
unrealistic and probably a million miles from the truth!
-
They scream for racist discussions. This will not work, nor would i ever want to see it. Forcing the fact there were groups of brave black-americans fighting the war means what? All Americans know that they fought together as one country. But no, we get this garbage that reminds us that we are still separated by race.
-
When it was called "The Tuskegee Airmen" - That was an awesome flick
-
Where are the male leads?
-
You don't start your poster with "Cuba Gooding Jr" because that's as far as I got before I stopped looking at it.
-
Excellent point there. Maybe they should have put Ne-Yo's name up top as well.
-
Usually not a good sign, but it's also just a little over a week before Black History Month, so maybe that's why they picked January 20th? I do like this trailer much more than the first one, and the poster is sweet. I'm hoping Uncle George gives us something great this time around.
-
When you think of how District 9 managed to make convincingly realistic aliens and technology up close, I must be frank in saying that this CGI is just sub par for a company like ILM who should be setting the bar, not hitting their heads on it. That train shot was a joke.
-
If in every other war movie that ever comes out in the future, you'd be just fine in showing an intergrated military fighting the good fight in WW2? Even though it would be total make believe?
Or are you saying you just want to see war movies staring white people?
Otherwise, any war movie concerning WW2 or earlier with black people in lead roles will have the same themes as a plot point. It's history. It's the black experience.
Bury your head in the sand if need be, but it's not gonna change.

Isnt there a movie tied in with this game also? Nice graphics-not as realistic as some of my other games, but its still cool.

One-- Blaming Lucas for the dialogue, even though he doesn't even recieve a credit for the screen story. If you don't like the screenplay, guys, blame Ridley and McGrudder (so odd to see his name up there-- remember when everybody thought he'd be the next Trudeau or Berke Breathed?).

Two-- Whining about CGI, when apparently this movie's heavy in miniatures, models and other old-school effects, courtesy of Kerner. What, do you want to go back to the days of shitty optical printers compositing all those images together?

with high production value. And that's not necessarily a bad thing for me really. I do wish he'd work with better writers though. Seems that that whole divorcing himself from the various Guilds over EMPIRE kind of fucked him up in that regard. Above all, he should really consider firing that douche-guzzler Rick McCallum. That guy's like some sort of cinematic AIDS jammed up in the folds around The Neck's CGI enhanced bunghole.
-
That guy carries no weight. Sounds like Big Gay Al commanding his men. "Leth thtand up for whath right!"
-
bad acting bad writing cgi overload ugh
-
The movie doesn't come out will January so I'm sure whatever digital effects need cleaning up will be finished by then.
-
will be completely unrealistic because Lucas will want to advertise the latest rendering software from ILM? i wouldnt be suprised that at the end of the movie, the pilots will have to fight spaceships.
-
and none of them is Will Smith? consider the movie a flop.
-
...is right on one point. lucas has ALWAYS made B-movies with outlandish production. that is what was part of the charm and the spectacle, especially in the 80's. thats who he is and always will be. true i would love to see another type of thx-1138 film which i actually consider as good as blade runner in my opinion. it is unbelievable. but whenever i see a lucasfilm logo on screen i know im gonna see some truly exciting shit happen. acting and dialogue, yeah can be weak at times. but who the fuck am i to complain, the guy created star wars. he can do whatever the fuck he likes and i will always back him up.

And I love it when white guys who've seen hundreds of war movies starring only white guys bitch and moan when there's one solitary theatrical film with black guys. Pussies. I can promise you that with skin that thin, if you were black, you would absolutely hate white people.
-
A vintage Drew Struzan poster would've been awesome (R.I.P.) I'm not ripping the movie, but boy does Cuba need a hit badly. Maybe if it's a hit he won't be stuck making straight to DVD action flicks. I just watched Sacrifice. It's aweful.

I'm no expert, but the physics of the way those planes are dogfighting makes no sense to me. I could almost forgive the ridiculous moves Lucas has his space fighters doing in the Special Editions and prequels, but to have real world planes doing things that defy physics and gravity takes me right out of the movie. I'll take Memphis Belle, thank you...

Look poster designers. Let me clue you in on something: overly airbrushing and blurring doesn't make your shitty poster feel more painterly. It makes your poster look like an amateurish Photoshop nightmare. Get an artist/illustrator that can actually PAINT this and knock off the soft focus airbrush look. It's tacky and CHEAP.
-
The first one was piling on the sappy inspirational music and speeches but was missing actual emotion. This one wisely ditches it and focuses on trying to sell it as an intense action movie. Smart move.
-
More colorful than anything since Speed Racer, it's not a bunch of people walking towards you, and it's not one of those collage piles a la Drew Struzan.
-
It's about time they got their due! Looks like it will finally happen!
-
Looking forward to it. Some ugly comments on this board, I guess some people are still crying over a movie that came out 12 years ago?
-
I feel the same way....been hearing about George Lucas planning to do this movie "Red Tails" for decades now...finally it seems that it's all coming together. The poster looks good and the trailer looks interesting and I am hoping this will be a good film. It's based on real events and the Tuskeegee Airman I am guessing. The last flying themed war film that I liked was "Fly Boys" about the squadron of air corp pilots sent over to France during WW I to help the French battle the Germans. It was decent I thought. The thing that kinda bugs me about "Red Tails" is that it has Cuba Gooding, Jr. in it...I think he has been in a few good films in the past, but when he plays a character that is in the military? Forget it! I think his roles have been terrible...I hated the role he played in "Outbreak", he was WAY to young to play a Major in the Army, and I didn't like the role he played in "Pearl Harbor" much either. Let's hope he does a better, more believable role in this film. Terrence Howard? Again, I think he is a good actor and has been in some really good films in the past, but he has also been in a lot of bad films too. I guess the proof will be when "Red Tails" is released in Feburary. Let's hope George Lucas and the cast have come up with a good film.
-
Some of the cockpit dialog seemed kind of silly and...well, kind of confirming a stereotype. Combat looks good though.

Anything he touches these days turns to shit
-
You know, the piece of shit Kevin Smith made?
-
Cuba is a fine actor. Not crazy about Howard. I just hope they downplay the "white people treat black people like shit" aspect. It is the reason for the movie, basically, so the subject has to be treated properly or it'll just be melodramatic goo. It should be as though the leads and the audience are in on the same secret - that they are kick ass fighter pilots, and they're so good that they aren't proving themselves with a chip on their shoulder. They just are that good of pilots. Naturals.
-

Cuba's only in this trailer for a second and a half...not good.
by alienindisguise
I wonder if this flick will show the true nature of segregation and not just the typical whites are bad bullshit. The blacks of the day had just as much animosity and hatred towards whites. This is Lucas' Amistad.
-

I liked this movie better when it was called “Tuskegee Airmen” and wasn't all CGI-ey.
by Ted Knight
Guess this movie needs to be remade for a simple reason, to keep the level of white guilt to a maximum level.
-
But I reserve judgement untill I've seen the movie from start to finish.
-
Lucas fooled me once with the prequels. Got me again with Crystal Skull. Not this time.
-
That is all... just meh.
-
The very first thing you say is that you're not an expert and then you proceed as if your opinion on the physics of it all should matter somehow. You're an idiot.
-
Remember when air combat films actually used real planes?
-
Because actual WWII era planes that are in working condition these days are not cheap. A P-51 Mustang that's close to mint condition (and it would have to be to stand up to period detail) will run you at the LEAST $2,000,000. I don't know about you but I saw multiple shots with hundreds of planes in the air. It would take up pretty much your entire budget to find 100 working planes. More if you have to settle for just any period planes at all and restore them. Also most air combat films in the past have used stock footage anyway, so... whatever.
-
Still looks to CGI is some shots. They have 5 months to still work on it.-----later-----m

Kevin Smith should make a movie about an obese has-been whose fifteen minutes expired like 15 years ago.
by NeonFrisbee
I mean, you know, seeing as how he's living that movie, he may as well capitalize on it. Just videotape his everyday life and release it. When it tanks, critically and financially, he can throw another temper tantrum and go on a damage control tour explaining whatever random bullshit he seems to think he needs to explain about his shitty movies. Here, I'll help you out Kevin, just say, "Look, I realize I suck, I'm a big fat mewling manbaby, and most of my fame is based on a fluke. I made a reasonably funny movie 20 years ago and I got a lot of attention 'cause indie film was a big deal then (everyone was looking for the new QT) and that delusion went to my head. Can you blame me for turning into a desperately lame douche of a man? Look, aside from riding the coattails of my own diminishing returns and projecting my self-loathing and frustration onto you, I'm actually a nice guy, Besides, what good does it do humiliating the fat guy? It's like kicking a cripple. Anyway, I hope you enjoy watching my slow motion career-implosion / extended nervous breakdown. Also: FUCK YOU YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND MY PAIN! Sorry, sorry. You're all great. I love you. Please pay to see my movie so I can pay my rent and my wife won't divorce me. Please?" I'd have SO much more respect for him then! Just say these words Kevin, you fat fuck, and all will be forgiven (not really)!
-
and yeah i know cuba was in that version too, and? i stand by what I said.
-
I mean, thats the whole fucking point of the movie. At least make it obvious thats who is flying the damn plane. And yeah i saw the names at the top, and? I stand by what i said.
-
Instead of some lame-ass close-up photo of an actor's face.
-
Because people still use the word, "blacks" when talking about people of African descent. WE can stop making movies about how segregated and fucked up the world is when the world stops being segregated and fucked up because, no matter how progressive people think they are, some of this shit just wont go away.
-
Let's pray there are no Prequel moments.
-
Is there a fanbase for this? Seriously. I'm asking. I personally am completely over WWII movies. And any kind of racial Crash type The Help movies. And vampires. I'm sick of vampires. These guys aren't vampire pilots are they? Because then that would be three ways I'm not interested. And I still don't hate Jar Jar. But I will never understand the decision to let him step in crap when Gungans don't even wear shoes. That shit raped my 20s.

Red Tails is better than their original title.....Black Dudes in the Sky
by Bobo_Vision
-
Anthony Hemingway has made some excellent TV episodes. Some of visuals look quite good here. But then again are these characters talking the way people did in the period? Or am I overly influenced by films of that time that used a more stilted way of line delivery and they were also mostly delivered by white people (unless it was a maid or an elevator conductor). I wonder why they did not make this poster more retro/painted instead of the video-game-looking photoshopped illustrations. This poster suggests that Me262 jet fighters got into constant dog fights with P51s. My understanding was that jet technology of the time did not allow for rapid acceleration and so most Me262s flew through allied bomber formations instead of maneuvering and engaging like the piston engined Me109s. My understanding is that P51s would attempt to shoot down 262s when they were taking off or landing when they were moving slowly and vulnerable. I am not a hater, but I wonder about this film and how accurate it is. since it is a historical bioepic, accuracy would be nice.

As others have said..better than the last one, still looks like Video Game..
by conspiracy
cleanest smoke and flames ever put to film. And I say BULLSHIT on any models being used...then again it would be just like ILM to take a physical model and make it look like a rendered scrubbed clean piece of CGI fuckery. And get those ME-262s the Fuck outta here already...; historically ME-262 pilots completely ignored Allies fighters, since they were not the ones destroying factories, and blew past them to get to the bomber formations. 262's would make a few dive and zoom passes, knock down a few bombers until they were out of ammo...then get the fuck outta there. About the only time allied pilots even got a chance to shoot down a 262 was as the poor fucker was out of gas and bullets and trying to land

so many haters-this is a great demonstration of what you can do with a 20 million dollar budget.
by OandA
I think it looks great for a movie on a 20 million dollar budget. Hell it looks like a movie with 100 million dollar budget. Lucas is using this as a test bed to lower cost of movies. Hes trying to figure out how to shoot tv cheaper at the same time.
-
a turd is a turd!
-
The trailers look great.
-
I've just realised this is a war movie for kids. Lucas isn't making Band of Brothers in the Sky. Realism is out the window, Lucas is aiming for the black tweenies with this.
-
Action looks fantastic. Hopefully the script and performances are on point.
-
COLORS! How I miss them.
-
Oooh, I hope this is as good as it looks it might be.
-
Spending $100m on a movie about heroic African Americans, only to not put the faces of the African American actors on the poster because? Is it bad for marketing? Anyway, the poster looks like something an 11 year old might get excited about, and the CG is the trailer is horrific.
-
You can't very well say this is showing Lucas' writing and directing hallmarks (ie: bad) because he did not have anything to do with the writing or directing on this one. It is simply a Lucasfilm movie, but George didn't make it. And Harry, it seems like we have been waiting decades because it actually has been decades. I'm interested to see it finally coming to screen, and with great visuals that would not have been possible when I first read about it. Hope the rest of it is as good as the airplane scenes.
-
The phrase "looks like a video game" has come to the point where that is a huge compliment for the film. Seriously, when is the last time you guys played video games? They look basically perfect now - the good ones sure do. And using models guarantees nothing. Lord of the Rings had plenty of miniatures and Jackson shot it so it looked like a CGI flythrough and altered the color palette till it looked fake too. You can ruin models, and you can use CGI effectively. They are tools.
-
I never said anything about them being called black people; I was speaking about those that referred to them simply as, "blacks". At least if they called them black people they would be acknowledging their humanity but some people, even in this day and age, can't seem to muster that mush respect. What I see in you is someone so willing to point out how tired he is of, "PC" rhetoric that you couldn't look beyond the phrasing to understand what I was actually saying. My statement wasn't about being politically correct; it was about a lack of basic recognition of the humanity of a group of people; the very definition of racism.
-
If I hear this one more time, I'm going to puke! Complaining about CGI use is as dumb as complaining that a movie is shot in black & white. Makes no sense and automatically renders those saying it, ignorant douche drinks! Flick looks cool. It's nice NOT to be a racist like the rest of you child murderers.
-
They are NOT from Africa, they were born in America. They are AMERICANS, BLACK AMERICANS. BE PROUD!
-
Why are so many people liking this poster, it's unbelievably badly artworked, seriously ameteur. The trailer, however, is A+. I'm anxious to see this, having being presented with superheroes and remakes ,it's tiresome. I don't need to see batman's latest rubber outfit, it looks just like his last one, but I do need to see P40's strafing trains, mustangs dogfighting BF109's and taking out me262's. oh yes. I look foreward to seeing this on the day of release.

I dunno, I find anyone who over-identifies with their race to be suspect.
by NeonFrisbee
Anytime anyone talks about racial pride, I get a little icky feeling inside. I think pride should be based primarily on things you've *done*, not things you *are*. I don't think that means everyone should be "color blind" and/or not be culturally aware, but when anyone gets all bent outta shape about the language, I always think something else is bubbling beneath the surface; some weird mix of narcissism and prejudice that belies a secret self-loathing, anger, and hatred.
-
well said. I also feel very uncomfortable with people who over emphasise their race, religion, sexual orientation and gender. You are who you are judged by the things you have done in your life and the way you have treated others. If you have struggled in your life because of the colour of your skin, then your action/reactions to that is what defines you, not the colour!
-
At it's core, I completely agree with you. State of the art CGI doesn't look ANYTHING like a videogame, and it's laughable when the comparison is made- ESPECIALLY when it has been the goal of games for over 15 years to capture the visual style of movies. They're converging- people need to deal with it.
I will say, that I understand why people think that. They ARE converging- games are looking more like movies and by default, that makes movies look more like games, too.
People need to quit the captain obvious shit and stop pointing it out.
-
I meant.... it games look as good as movies, but they try to.

but, there seems to be an overwhelming bias against the accomplishments and contributions made by various PoC or gender or sexual orientation. Sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle but always identifiable. I want to believe that I'm judged by what I do, but then I have to deal with other stuff that, frankly, ONLY has to do with the colour of my skin. I don't like the term African American because it seems like a weird 'catch-all' phrase that's often applied to non-Americans. Seems a bit imperialist, no?

IF I WERE BLACK, I WOULD SAY - IT'S A MOVIE MOTHERFUCKERS. GET OFF YOUR BULLSHIT !!
by Darth Furious
Think about it. How many REAL films have we've seen about black folks in war? Not enough. It's just another story... like Private Ryan... like Flags of our Fathers...like Pearl Har... well nevermind Michael Beybor but c'mon GROW the fuck up. Look at TV, look on the big screen. Whites are everywhere. Nobody gives one fuck about who is the minority now. Nobody feels for a racist white man in America, so what - man up nigga. And nobody is beating you over the head to remind you about racism, it was WHAT it was. Only fake ass pretenders want to sweep everything under the rug like it never happened and stop them damn colored folk from EVER talking about it. Thats what they went through, be glad you didnt have to endure that shit and shut the fuck up. I think I'll watch some black porn now too and eat some chicken. Praise White Jesus. lol

Paul Haggis did. It was then and there that I decided I couldn't be bothered with movies about race anymore.
