See Philadelphia...In Glasgow!! Here Come The WORLD WAR Z Shoot Pics!!
Merrick here...
An AICN reader named Muscles sent in some pics from the filming of Marc Forster's adaptation of Max Brook's WORLD WAR Z book. The film stars Brad Pitt and is scripted by BABYLON 5's J. Michael Straczynski.
These pics are not as pyrotechnically satisfying as the AVENGERS spy pics we saw yesterday, but...as cynical as I am...I still can't help but be a little amazed by the notion of turning Glasgow into...Philadelphia.
Here's Muscles...
I was in Glasgow, Scotland today and was able to have a little wander around the set for World War Z thats been built in the city centre. Looks like its doubling for Philadelphia, but also noticed an MTA bus and the humvees have NJ plates. Very cool. Pics attached.

Book was good, film will be watered down garbage. Sigh
-
Pretty cool stuff happening in Glasgow - helicopter landing and gun fight to be filmed + zombies too obviously. If they film it on a Saturday night, the studio will save cash money on special effects. Just offer the drunk party animals free bbq and watch them go nuts for meat.
-
Really, that all? A couple of pictures of some buildings, a SWAT truck, a humvee? Double exclamation marks? Seriously?
-
not staying true to the book at all except that it has zombies in it. I was rather looking forward to the movie until hearing this.

How about shooting Philadelphia in...Oh, I don't know, maybe Philadelphia?
by AzulTool
I know it's not that simple. I know it's cheaper. I know Toronto's a stand-in for NY all of the time. It just frustrates me to see our leading export also involved in outsourcing. I'm sure the good people of Philly would have loved to have had this production pumping money into their local economy. It's a damn shame.

Still don't see how this could be done as a two hour movie and not be gutted like a fish...
by Isaac R.
..but whatever, be fun to watch them try.
-
I'm liking this bullshit less and less.
-
Sorry, this project fell off my radar. Maybe if reviews are good I'll see it on Netflix someday.
-
All of the buildings at 15th and Arch are modern looking. Why not just shoot it here? The city is fucking cash-strapped. People need jobs here.
-
The book was pretty stupid, loaded with lazy stereotypes and weighed down by a libertarian subtext; fan fiction by a Romero/Rand geek. Still, the basic plot has the essentials of a good movie.
-
Eeww. It's called "McEwan's Export" for a REASON! Tennent's is the popular one ( Although it also tastes like tramp pish. ) Anyway, aye... zombies! :) This link might be interesting over the next few days: http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/aboutglasgow/webcams/
-
I can't wait to see that car in the movie! And is that a pillar!?!
-
That the makers of the film didn't really research anything because mass transit in Philadelphia is SEPTA, not the MTA. But hey, who needs accuracy for a town that is notorious for hating everything?
-
How are they going to clean it up enough to look post-apocalyptic?
-
So what it doesnt follow the great book, call yourself a zombie fan!!?? how the fuck can you hate on this when a: the book never leant itself to be made into a movie, its more suited to a serialized tvshow and b: were getting a motherfucking big budget zombie flick starring Brad Pitt for christs sakes!!! whats there to complain about

These street corners look nothing like this but it's cool they got the signs right.

That guy ruins everything he writes. Spider-Man still hasn't recovered from the crap he wrote.
-
How will the military avoid killing Phillies fans by accident?
-
But the Republican governor FFFF'd over largely Democratic Philadelphia by refusing to approve any tax credits in the city, while giving tons of help to shoots like Batman in Pittsburgh, and other smaller productions throughout the state. Rural Pennsyltucky really hates Philly, despite how important the city is to the state's economy.

sucks too. I would have loved looking out my window at work to see some zombie action. I know Ill get all types of confused seeing "parts of Philly" I dont recognize. Hell, they could have filmed a lot of this in North Philadelphia, without having to use any zombie makeup for the people there...

So taking a US production to Scotland is cheaper than shooting in Philly?
by Quake II
Seriously makes no sense to me to fly a production company and actors 11 hours to Scotland as opposed to a 3 hour flight to Philly. Good to see Hollywood doesn't give a shit about the American economy at all. Hey Hollywood, how about pumping some cash into local economies! If Americans are all unemployed and broke there will be no one able to SEE your fucking movies! And this movie is PG-13? Pass, pass and double PASS.
-
And they've really only just finished building sets/dressing up the area. Brad and family only got into Glasgow this time yesterday too - on THEIR OWN TRAIN - take that, recession. So they've only been filming street scenes today. The streets around the whole area are closed off on the 21st and 28th, and there's a few car crashes being staged.
-
Auld Reekie is Edinburgh. The Fringe is in Edinburgh. This is says Glasgow and is all about Glasgow. Not Edinburgh. Just saying...
-
it'll be hard for me to settle for anything less

Acording to the new Script, there is NO Battle of Yonkers, but Battle of Philly
by The_Hypnotoad
Uhm... "spoilers", I guess
-
I have a few friends that would have been working as carpenters, riggers, or caterers on that production too. FFFFing Fascist Corbett and his redneck, energy industry base
-
I know Glasgow smells, but I think you'll find that 'Auld Reekie' is actually Edinburgh's nickname. You know, the one with the Fringe Festival and no location shoot for World War Z. Just saying. Glasgow actually looks a lot more like other cities than Edinburgh does.
-
...they would have just filmed in Philly. Walking through the Cheltenham Mall is scarier than any zombie flick I've ever seen. Also, 15th and Arch is a block away from the Convention Center, so I'm pretty sure it's just parking garages there.
-
Also, you managed to avoid looking racist/anti-semitic there very effectively. Good job.
-
Way better than every English city besides London of course. Edinburgh was also awesome.
-
PG-13 fuck you

I LOVED GOING TO GLASGOW AND ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE MADE A PERFECT RAcCOON CITY FOR A RESIDENT EVIL MOVIE......
by CreepyThinMan
I remember playing the RE series in 2000 and being struck by how much Glasgow at night reminded me of Raccoon City. I'm not joking, the architecture of the city would have been sooo perfect for an RE movie. You could have even saved money by hiring locals and you wouldn't need any make-up *lifts up kilt and runs away*.....
-
I'd rather tackle a hoard of marauding zombies than one drunken Glaswegian hassling you for a piece of your KFC on a Saturday night. Brad Shit would pitt his pantaloons.

by yamayama
I can tell you this has been on the evening news on BBC Scotland for the last 3 nights. Its been raining persistently in Scotland for the last fortnight so i dont how that will affect filming. I am actually more psyched about rumours that Christopher Nolan was going to do exterior shooting for TDKR in Glasgow for panoramic shots representing Gotham. Glasgow has a lot of gothic architecture that is worthy of attention.

"Auld Reekie" is actually Edinburgh. And on the opposite side of Scotland on the east coast. Glasgow is in the west.....
-
Uhhh or was it Yonkers.
-
The unions essentially scared productions away in the 80s and 90s. Recently they've been trying to lure productions back, but the city really built a reputation of being a very difficult and costly place to shoot. To nitpick, though, there aren't MTA buses in Philly. It'd be SEPTA.
-
As a Glaswegian and someone who has also spent time in Philly, I can understand why Glasgow is being used as the location. First and somewhat unusally for the UK, Glasgow city center has a grid iron street layout, something more typical of US cities. Also (and has been commented on by some Philli residents I know when visiting Glasgow), Glasgow City Chambers (located behind Arch St sign in above photo) looks a lot like Philly City Hall.
-
Ya try and help out and next thing ya know they are breaking off a TB'er some disrespect. Those local web cams are the gift (yeah it is mostly boring but you can check in at will) that keeps on giving. Meanwhile a humvee and street sign are "news".
-
BPZ maybe. Every story I read about this production doesnt jive with what the book presented. My god. PG 13? Are the Wayan brothers in this also?

Someone please remind me...what story involving the military took place in Philly?
by ravenloff
<i>Acording to the new Script, there is NO Battle of Yonkers, but Battle of Philly</i> If this is true, the bottom just dropped out of my interest in this movie. That's saying quite a bit, too. I loved the book. I've reread it many times and, when it came out in 2006, bought multiple copies for all the men in my extended family who in turn loved the book. Even those that weren't really into zombie horror...like me. I'm willing to give wide latitudes to the movie process just to see it up on the big screen, but if they cut out Yonkers or change it so much it doesn't resemble the book anymore, that's it for me. From what we've learned so far...Pitt's character is "racing around the world" to PREVENT the outbreak. How would he be at something on the scale of Yonkers if the outbreak had not only occured already, but had time enough to infect millions of people on Manhattan? Travesty.
-

Hurlford not hurlord, this...this is why we need an edit button.
by OptimusBob
-
....if they stay with that "racing to prevent" storyline, say goodbye to the tough little chick transport pilot knocked down in the swamps of Louisiana. That story only works if the outbreak had not only already happened, but had progressed for a long period of time, giving almost all territory over to the dead.

Presumably they are filming here due to tax breaks/cheaper crews etc? Those pics, btw, are a bit gash. My mate from work took better ones on his mobile. Unlike Batman etc I doubt there'll be many spoilerific images from this shoot as the best even the local news could do was a grainy image of Pitt. Wonder if I'd make it through security to kick Marc Foster in the balls for the shite that was Quantum of Solace.
-
Which is Edinburgh, not Glasgow.
-
"Old Reeky looks absolutely NOTHING like any American city" I assume you mean "Auld Reekie". Which is Edinburgh, btw, not Glasgow. Otherwise, err, full marks. (Coughs.)
-
And in Albany and Hartford and Springfield, MA. The Post gets around.
-
Those festival fuckers, every year. Last Friday the population more than doubled overnight. Couldn't get anywhere and too many eejits walking on the road. The urge to kill was overwhelming. Good luck to the crew in Weegieland this weekend. They'll need it, especially around the Merchant City and George Square.
-
Nope, not good now, in fact. Racist Nazi.
-
Yes, that's the biggest problems in US. Producers filming films oversees. And I guess you really are too much of a Nazist to friggin see it done in every single industry or the fact that Hollywood still employes a shit load of people. Asswipe.
-
It's so much smarter, easier, and cheaper than actually trying to do anything in the real world. Heck, why don't they just turn it into a 90 minute, PG-13, 3D, comic relief filled, audience pleasing Micheal Bay fest so they can rack in a billion dollars and make thirty-five sequels?
-
ARE U FUKIN KIDDING ME,LONDON IS THE MOST HORRIBLE UNFRIENDLY CITY ON EARTH,DIDNT U HEAR ABOUT THE RIOTS?? SURE GLASGOW HAS ITS BAD PARTS ,HAS MANY GOOD THINGS GOING FOR IT TOO.LIVED HERE MY WHOLE LIFE.

I've always wondered what an American interstate sign would look like on non-American soil. Now I know!!!
by Bobo_Vision
And you can tell that the light refracts slightly different off the sign and into the surrounding sky in Scotland than it would in America due to the changes in environment and atmospheric pressure. So cooool. These pics give me goosebumps!!!! Aint it cool...indeed!!!
-
But based on all your talk-backs it sounds like they are changing it up drastically. So in that case...why not just change the setting of the story to Glasgow? Does Philly have any significance to the story?

Brad Pitt: "Wow, the crew have done a great job of creating a zombie apocalypse."...
by OptimusBob
..."I mean, look at the devastation and those extras look awesome in the zombie make-up." Agent: "Uh Brad, that ain't the set, that's Kilmarnock; the town you'll be staying in for the duration, and those aren't extras; they're the townsfolk!"
-
That is all.
-
As far as I can recall, Philly isn't even mentioned in the book. As someone noted, Yonkers, NY is where the US military sets up a big showpiece battle against the zombies which of course goes disastrously wrong. And it should be noted that the book's in-universe author is interviewing people about the now-won war months/years after the fact, not trying desperately to head off the plague. I don't think the book ever reveals what he actually did during the war.
-
OK, I about fell out of my chair when I saw this. I grew up 10 minutes away from the Liberty Bell and now live 20 minutes away from Nelson's Column. Now with that in mind, my gut was no way in hell. But in reality, Philly's architecture is fairly similar and the photos do a good job of an initial gut check that it is indeed Philly - minus the obvious screw up that we have SEPTA for public transit. Die Hard 2 anyone? I love the BF Bridge sign. Must have seen the real one 10,000 times in my life. It is more than sad and pathetic that somebody has to go to Scotland to shoot in Philly. However, Philly is an enigma. Unless you are from Philly, you will never understand us. Pretty much every single major production has had issues when filming there. The 2 most recent that jump out at me are Cold Case and Hack. Both had problems with the Unions and city. To the guys making this movie, you can't convince somebody it is Philly unless you add a guy with a shopping cart selling pretzels at a stoplight. And how about actually paying a visit to Philly to at least get the transit system right? If you don't do at least that, expect to be booed forever.
-
Yeah Kilmarnock is cesshole. I think more films should be shot in Edinburgh though, not just period movies, and quirky indies like Hallam Foe and Trainspotting. Anyone mentioning One Day will be shot.
-
even if it sucks the book is still there. I never understood why people get their panties in a bunch when a book (or old movie) gets made into a new movie and it's not to their liking. Books epic in scope are so vastly different than movies that I don't think a true adaptation is possible. Harry Potter and LOTR come close they say but those were WAY too long to really hold my interest. Over 2 hours in a movie seat just hurts my ass. As for movie remakes, a new suckass movie doesn't erase the original. Just watch the original again!
-
I'd say each city has it's merits. I've never had any trouble when visiting London, but in Glasgow the scum tend to infiltrate the nice areas as well.
-
Unless they are actually interesting.
