New IMMORTALS Trailer hits
Hey folks, Harry here... Tarsem's IMMORTALS looks absolutely insanely cool to me. Definitely unlike any mythology flick I've seen before - will it be too gaudy to take in? I don't think so. If anyone can be crazy audacious, it's the Gods. Right? Here ya go...

It has a lot of slow motion jumping. That's for sure. Not so much on the hero annunciating his words though. But, you know, rallying the troops, yelling, jumping, being good looking while doing all of that. It's tough for him.
-
based on Greek Mythology alone so i'll watch it. But it does seem a little iffy.
-
I'm more looking forward to Snow White, tho.
-
This is the same trailer that was released months ago. I see nothing new at all.

If the mvoie is 1/10th as good as it is good looking, it will be quite a nice movie to watch.
by AsimovLives
And then there is Freida Pinto. Always a plus.
-
um they mention 300 in the trailer. Hell it looks just like it.
-
This particular trailer is actually not new - we've seen it before. The latest one, including John Hurt's voiceover can be found here: http://io9.com/5831401/new-immortals-trailer-explains-the-story-behind-the-hairless-man-war

What? Good visuals? Where? Looks hollow and fake, if thats what you mean.
by MariusXe
big old "meh" its getting from me, even if Supermans in it.
-
Just lettin' ya know.
-
...you won't give a shit about with a cliched, overly produced image every other shot. Hate this director. Should have stuck to music videos.
-
from the old Dungeon's and Dragon's cartoon?
-
...being egged on a by wussy sounding 'hero' giving a big speech." Too bad the casting director didn't choose as well as the Gods. This is what happens when you value pretty people over acting ability.
-
Because all of you guys will be too busy masturbating furiously to your pre-ordered copies of Skyrim. This is what i predict.
-
...I frankly think the rest of the cast stink.
-
Is that how we say "honor" in ancient greece? Caville is this year's Sam Worthington
-
And that is the only good thing I can say about this. And did I just time travel? This trailer is like 4 months old. It's the same trailer.

I Dunno, Some Of Those Shots Looked Pretty Cool / Weird To Me; Enough So That I'm Now Interested
by NeonFrisbee
It looks like a slightly more art-damaged / slightly less gay 300.
-
That's exactly what I was thinking ksharp. Makes me want to see a live action movie based on the old D&D cartoon even more. The hell with Immortals. I'm sorry that helmet on Rourke looks absolutely ridiculous.

Looks goos. Like something I would purchase to watch at home if...
by Jaka
... it has good word of mouth. But I'm not sure its convinced me I need to see it in a theater.
-
...and Rourke looks like a wolf waiting for little red riding hood to rid him of lice.
-
Was that Stephen Dorff? REALLY? That guy has made like 2 good movies ever. And really, even that is being generous. He's a terrible actor.
-
I wondered why I didn't hear any "voiceover". For a minute I thought Harry had confused voiceover with onscreen text.
-

twogunjames - you're being generous. He's the worst of the worst.

But I'm thinking that'll be pretty much it.
-
...and to take some acting classes so she can deliver her lines in a way that doesn't sound like a salesperson from the local Gap store.
-
will our hero vanquish evil? Yeah it's easy to pile on, but it looks like a dumbed down and less interesting version of god of war. Actually, I'd love to see a CGI god of war with avatar-level mocap and world building; actually scrap that and go directly to epic Conan film.
-
Ha ha. I didn.t even watch the trailer. Just jumpin on the bandwagon
-
After seeing that trailer if it was open today I'd go buy a ticket. Hope it's got good 3D. If it's not in 3D that's a shame.
-
Loved Tarsem's "The Fall." There's a similar visual eye at work here, but whereas "The Fall" was wonderfully low-tech, relying on locations and cinematography, as well as being full of whimsy and observation, this feels just like another macho sword-fest a la "300." Not necessarily a bad thing, but I can't really get excited about it.

Every Warrior Movie needs a guy flying through the air in slow motion with his sword back..
by professor murder
..and this movie is NO exception! haha
-
I shouldn't be shocked at the reactions in this ghetto of an Internet talkback forum. But I am. Now, the second coming I do not expect this film to be but speaking purely as an artist...right now this film is absolutely beautiful in every way, imagery unlike I've ever seen in some ways. Art is tricky, it's many things to many people. Tarsem is a director whose work is style as substance. Of course for many, there has to be something to attach to, something to invest in. And yet, even the fables of old chronicling the days of the Greek Gods were nothing more then entertaining literature of that time. For now, this recreation seems to capture perfectly visually what I think about when I hear the words Zeus, or Greek Gods. Give this a chance.
-
I think it's because British actors have always portrayed Greeks and Romans going back to famous stage plays even before the advent of motion pictures. So there is an automatic association. It would be refreshing to hear a different accent in an ancient world film. Milius's Conan had American accents and it worked. Jake Gyllenhaal didn't have to have an English accent in Prince of Persia. He could have spoke English but with a Persian accent instead. That would have worked better I think. I don't associate Iranian people as having a cockney English accent. I know there was controversy over casting a Caucasian in that role. A strange and interesting subject.
-
Because everyone knows that the ancient Greeks and Romans all came from Buckinghamshire. It's a good question. My guess would be the influence of Shakespeare, i.e. having RP-speaking thespians performing Julius Caesar, Coriolanus et al for several centuries. In North America it ought to have made sense to affect an English accent for Richard III and Henry V*, but to use whatever accent you liked for Julius Caesar, Romeo & Juliet etc. But the thesps probably stuck to one generic English accent for all, and this tradition carried over into Hollywood movies. * - (Even there there's no reason to suppose the modern English accent is any closer to Richard III's than is the modern American accent. There is probably little resemblance to either.)

Rourke's helmet looks like the Easter Bunny. Everything is shot EXACTLY like "300". Even Stephen Dorf shows up!

I predict that this end up just like "Sucker Punch". Geeks will be ohhing and ahhing about the visuals right up until the day it opens and tanks miserably.
-
This movie needs more Nigel.
-
I really enjoy movies about Greek Mythology. Can't wait to see it.
-
It's funny how hard they are trying to be 300. However with the lack of angles they are shooting at it just looks bad bad bad. Maybe the director needs a quick peek at How to draw comics the Marvel way.

this movie looks so freaking awesome. I love these visual kind of movies. I lvoe tarsem, I love synder, and bay. So sue me. I love a good thinker movie and comedy too but I mostly did really high concept visual treats. Like sucker punch, scott piligrim.

So Harry's never seen 300 or Clash of the Titans..either version
by alienindisguise
because he thinks this pile of shit looks original.
-
This has slow motion and is gritty, therefore it is trying to be 300. No body did these things before Snyder.
-
something we've all seen before.
-
The original 300 was a jaw-dropping splendour, like Sin City, and visually utterly original. But now after CotT, Spartacus TV, and crappy ancient war documentaries on the Made Up History Channel, it's gotten to the point of self-parody, and you actually start to appreciate Meet the Spartans. 3 good points though: 1. kudos to Mickey Rourke for keeping a straight face in that helmet. 2. Frieda Pinto, who could look angelic in a boiler suit and divers helmet. 3. The D&D Ranger's Bow.

or wait until the unrated blu-ray comes out.

AICNers ripped this movie to shreds when we saw the teaser earlier in the year with the stupid magic arrow. Maybe there's a chance there's something of a real story here, but jesus... can you really try to get us to buy into this with "it's new and different?" Lets see... what do we have in this trailer... * The jumping death from above and slowmo crap from 300, * the great panning across massive armies from Troy * The Greek gods using humans as pawns from clash of the titans ( though to be fair this is how its portrayed in traditional greek theater ) * the speech before the battle from Braveheart * the shooting of super arrows from LOTR * Spiderman "with great power comes great responsibility" quote am I missing anything?
-
Conan just looks all wrong, where this looks crazy cool like 300.

but it does look damn good. Is it just me, or is this what Clash of the Titans should have been like? Anyways, I love the deep bass sound of the magical bow. BWOOAAWWHHH!!!! It reminds me of the sound my schlong makes when I gets me a boner.

Also, if IMMORTALS does well at the old box office, I bet it leads to Tarsem getting asked to restart the currently stalled DUNE adaptation

and blue screen backdrops. I'm going to have to pass on this, based on visual dullness alone. Was the whole movie shot in a studio? Sure looks like it.

Terrible visual aesthetic (perpetual twilight?) which is nothing more than a cheap 300 rip off. Silly dialogue we've seen played better in other films. Horrible slo-mo nonsense. And Rourke is a giant bunny. Utter wank if that trailer is anything to go by.

Seriously the CGI is laughable and it looks and sounds like a homemade fanfilm. There's nothing new here.

you know the way real film makers used to do it back when audiences were smarter and harder to please.
-
There is nothing jaw dropping about this apart from Frida Pinto's dodgy acting (don't know what I mean..? watch her acting in Rise of the Apes!) Tarsem has proved to me several times that he cannot deliver a cohesive narrative. Someone above mentioned that at Comicon, he admitted to being all about the visuals. Well he's proved that several times and in each case it was like watching wallpaper dry!

Both The 13th Warrior and Outlander took the Beowulf mythology and created two really cool lower key but badass medieval action flicks. It's kinda funny that the best Beowulf movies are two films that take the legend and alter the telling but stay pretty faithful to the period that the Beowulf story came from. 13th Warrior + Outlander > Zemeckis' mo-cap Beowulf

Which is sad both because I believe Tarsem to be a talented, if a little misguided, director and because one Zack Snyder is one too many. Here's hoping it bombs...not because I wish Tarsem any misfortune, but because anything that could possibly through a wrench in the upcoming Superman abortion is welcome...

Who's the little bitch playing Zeus? Zeus shouldn't look like the kind of guy I could slap around. Also, this trailer makes it clear to me that Cavill is absolutely wrong for Superman, not that I didn't know that already, but now I'm certain. Hercules censoring people who break news before him.
by raptorjesusgonnafuckherc
hercules has repeatedly been deleting my account, which was under the name of raptorjesusisback. I didn't do anything wrong, nor did I break any rule or term of service on the site, except to make a crack about how Herc doesn't understand what a dramedy is (talkback here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/45055 although all criticisms of herc have been deleted). I then posted this link http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=81043 in the breaking bad talkback at 10:04pm, where Herc took my information to update the story, then deleted my account and all posts by 11pm. I informed herc of this news, bur rather than thank me for the update, he simply erased my existence. I don't understand how this site abides by such censorship. People can say what they like, but if a mod has a personal issue then they can abuse their power? I even contacted harry for a response, but received none. What has happened to AICN, in that petty bitchy little moderators are allowed to steal information without attribution and silence those who provide it? You know what would be nice, is an answer from Harry, but no....so far nothing. What do you think talkbackers? Acceptable?

re: 13th Warrior -- I recommend Beowulf & Grendel with Gerard Butler
by Wookie_Weed
Pretty decent movie, but the Icelandic weather caused major production problems and it never got to be as good as it should have been. Sturla Gunnarsson is a terrific cinematographer, but he was cutting his director teeth on B&G and it shows. Worth watching though.
-
At least Snyder appears to get a little better. Tarsem is just a hack who over directs every shot and makes everything look cheap and idiotic. I hope this flops, but the 300 crowd will probably be there.
-
No, in ancient Greece spoke "honour" as γεραίρω. Modern English didn't exist. Is suppose we just have to imagine that the characters are speaking Greek. It also takes a lot of imagining that this movie will be any good.
-
I meant, "the ancient Greeks spoke..." and "I suppose..."
-
...his unconvincing speech and delivery of what little dialogue heard in the trailers, gives me great concern; for the Man of Steel will be being played by a 'man of wood' Superman is gonna suck!! I can tell you right now. Just listen to his fucking voice, it's embarrassing!

"Retarded 8 year olds"? Nah. More like people who enjoy psychedelics and all the cosmic joy they bring.
by NeonFrisbee
Of course it looks super fake and cheesy. But it looks gorgeously super fake and cheesy (not unlike Sin City). Like I said before, it looks like a more art damaged / less gay 300 (300 being the gayest movie of the decade; gayer than Brokeback, gayer than gay porn). Of course, the whole thing could very easily suck as bad as THE WORST movie of 2011 (I'm looking at you Sucked Punch), but this trailer looks interesting to me.

I'm asking honestly, I'm not big into gaming and I'd never heard of it til going thru this talkback. But if it's as popular as it apparently seems to be, could it actually affect the opening of a movie? <p> It would be a pretty frickin' big deal if a movie company shifted an opening date because of the release of a game, and an acknowledgment that movies are no longer the kings of the entertainment world as far as where most folks choose to spend their entertainment money...we shall see!
-
i think they will eventually, if not now. This is a 'perfect storm' of coincidences, tho. Higher-tier games typically have a development budget of about $40 million, and a lead time up to two years. Skyrim has now pushed beyond four years of development, with a sky-high budget presumably adjusted accordingly, since no one will say what the cost is anymore. You guys here are the golden goose demographic. There's only so much gold all of you have that they can squeeze out at the same time. Now that games are pushing that level of cost, and chasing after the exact same genre demographic, it's inevitable that they're going to conflict. Question is, will it make a difference if they try to cock block each other getting to you?
-
Aug. 17, 2011, 9:59 a.m. CST
I don't what the hell Skyrim even is; but either way, I don't think this will open well. Unless it gets stellar advance reviews or something.
by NeonFrisbee
I *might* see this in the theatre if the reviews are good. If they're just so-so, I'll probably wait for dvd. I think this kinda screams "dvd/netflix" to mainstream audiences. So if the fantasy audience isn't into it, or is distracted by another big fantasy device / toy / sad girlfriend substitute, then this is surely destined for failure. I still think it looks pretty neat. At least worth a look. Even though Sucked Punch sucked, I thought the video game cutscene parts looked cool.

Tarsem is the poster child for shallow filmmakers...all visuals, nothing below the surface. He makes Zac Snyder look like fuckin' David Lean.
-
She can't deliver a line to save her life. Lifeless and plastic. Stop casting this bitch in movies.
-
Tarsem has directed two films and he's certainly not a hack. The Cell, which was interesting but flawed, and The Fall, which is frankly one of the best films of the last decade. Shallow? Not really, it's a beautifully shot tale where the visuals help tell the story, often subtly so. And two superb central performances. I'm betting half of you haven't even seen it? Hack? Really? Do you even know what the definition of a hack is? He has a definite vision and right now I think decrying Immortals before you even really know the story or, frankly, anything (trailers can mis-sell films) is pretty, well, idiotic (to use the same black/white speak that's ever more prevalent on here). Sure, claim the trailer doesn't have promise, point out the similarities to 300, but after the sheer beauty of The Fall I'm willing to cut the guy some slack.
-
so once again, you're a Tarsem fan and all you speak of is the visuals. Quite frankly even if it was only the visuals, they're not all that great either. Dated and cliched. Talk to us about Tarsem's lack of ability to tell a narrative. His films are boring and all he concentrates on is the visuals. He is, at the end of the day, a commercials director!

So I will pass on this one. Fell asleep during 300. I just don't get where all the excitement comes from. If they are immortals, then they can never die right? I like heros that are real and vulnerable...batman, indiana jones, etc. Mabey im just not intelligent enough to understand or appreciate mythology, never really took the time to study it because frankly it just bores me. However I have a very open mind...so if anybody cares to explain why this will be a good movie, then im all ears.

I couldn't be bothered to pay attention. I didn't see it in the theater. I saw it on DVD and I just ended up thinking about other stuff. Example: "Did I leave the iron on?"

Erm, no, d o o d, The Fall was great outside of visuals too
by drwilliamweir
Tarsem used the visuals in The Fall to tell a good story. The visuals were as part of the story as was the script and acting - all together a fantastic movie because it blended together a great idea, a great visual style, fine writing and emotion. That's why it worked. The Cell didn't work because ultimately it was the shell of Seven crammed into a sci fi structure that didn't suit it. It was a somewhat empty but beautiful looking movie. Hardly a "fan", but you can't deny The Fall's a super film. I'm more less likely to bring down the hammer on something pre-emptively off the back of something like that.
-

Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto and Tarsem? Good enough for me.
by AsimovLives
-
And remember, THE FALL was entirely self-financed by Tarsem himself. The man wanted to prove to everybody else (and himself as well, i bet) that he's more then just the dude who made a pretty but shallow movie THE CELL. And as for me, he proved himself brillantly. Can't wait for IMMORTALS and SNOW WHITE.

If i didn't knew who was directing this movie, "from the producers of 300" crap would had killed any interest i could had in this movie. Since when boasting you produced 300 is a godo thing? That's the type of shit one should be embaraced about. Just take the money and pretend you had nothing to do with it. "Producer of 300" is definatly not the type of infamy shit one would want carved on his own tombstone.

it wasn't as bad as The Cell but it was still a boring movie. What can I say, I don't really care for self indulgent movie making. It's like a DJ playing to himself!

The man wanted to prove to everybody else (and himself as well, i bet) that he's more then just the dude who made a pretty but shallow movie THE CELL.
