More AVENGERS Cleveland Destruction with Captain America & something Alien?

Hey folks, Harry here... with some additional shots from an amazing vantage point in Cleveland - and man... things go boom!   This will be scenes from the last third of the film.   The last third of AVENGERS will be the biggest Superhero action that we've yet seen.   CLEVELAND is subbing for New York City - and all manners of bad things are afoot.   You can see some Alien tech below - also note the guy covered in motion tracking balls to be cg replaced by something non-human!  Can't wait to see this movie!   Let's get into the pics that our spy that I'll call Capt Toyota sent us.

Damn those explosions look good, but out comes Captain America!

Here's Chris Evans looking like something is going to be coming at him from above...  or he's trying to find our camera in the sky!

That lady in the mask behind Cap is up to NO GOOD!  I'm convinced.   Look at her sinister body language, the scowl in her eyes.

I love this pose...

It's even better when you pull back a bit.   Look at this shot - so cool!

I like this shot of the police man and Captain America smiling after things have cooled down a bit.

This man is seriously up to no good.   I hope Cap is tracking him, cuz you can bet that that alien tech is probably not a very nice thing.

Ok Cleveland fans - get me one of these shields!

Did we really catch THOR picking his nose?   I hope not.

Hello Harry,

I don’t know if you can use these set photos from the Avengers movie. These photos were taken by employees at the Medical Mutual of Ohio building which is right smack in the middle of the filming here in Cleveland. A few pictures show Chris Evans in and out of costume and one photo at the bottom shows what appears to be an Alien gun of some sort. Last Pic here shows Actor Chris Hemsworth checking out the scene(Black Hat) next to Cap’s stunt double.

    I thought...

    by nightraven

... Iron Man and Thor were fun films. I didn't have too much of a problem with The Incredible Hulk or Iron Man 2. In fact I thought that these films reinforced the fact that Marvel were setting up The Avengers quite nicely. Then Captain America happened. A brilliant first half that was absolutely note perfect, followed by a slapdash second half that pissed all over everything that came before it... ... and then, oh joy, a teaser for The Avengers that looked like a promo for a SyFy channel B movie! I live in hope that Joss Whedon will nail this and knock it out of the park, but I have a bad feeling about this :(

Cool pics. I hope this movie becomes THE standard for all future superhero movies. My only fear is that it won't look as epic and have the scope that it should (Captain America movie looked rushed & done on the cheap). Just to see Iron Man interact with Thor & Cap will be worth the price of admission.

  • Whether its any good, its impressive marvel pulled it off.

  • Does this mean Harry has read THE AVENGERS script? If so, then why the FUCK are we getting bullshit TOY reviews rather than SCRIPT reviews?! by Gabe Athouse

It's nice to see Whedon now that he's decided to just be bald and stop with the parting-his-hair-behind thing. Does anyone know (for sure, don't guess) if the Kree are a part of this or if it's just the Skrulls? I hope the Kree are involved, as it would help Marvel maybe set up some future cosmic spin-offs and would be more interesting than your typical shape-shifting-space-lizards-invade-Earth-after-having-been-lured-to-an-all-powerful-cosmic-cube-by-an-ancient-Norse-trickster-god-who's-actually-an-extradimensional-space-viking Hollywood plot.

    nightraven..Agreed about Captain America!

    by Quake II

Great first half but as soon as he got to Europe the movie took a big dump. No character development with the Howling Commandos or Bucky, no good action scenes or amazing sets and a terrible half-assed finale with the Red Skull in a plane. It's as if a totally different director stepped in to finish the last hour of the film.

    by Continentalop

Or at least I should say people are jumping the gun. That "alien tech" could just as easily be Asgardian, considering that science and magic are one and the same with them according to the movie version of Thor. The Casket of Winter and Brimfrost from the movie looked more like something out of Star Trek than they did Norse mythology. And the guy in cg bells actually might be standing in for the Hulk for all we know.

    by nightraven

I liked the way they reworked the Cap/Bucky relationship and thought that having them closer in age worked, but, as you say, the script didn't develop that relationship adequately. I had no initial issue with having him die falling from a train, but it lacked any real emotional punch. They actually killed him off a reel too early. Captain America really dropped the ball!

Do you really care, or are you just being satirical? Cuz, what the fuck does it really matter how much X movie makes vs. same genre Y film? Scarlett Johansson does NOT give up her Comfy Colon...

    by conspiracy

Something tells me Scarlett is a really bad fuck. Why? Her looks... See...when a woman is built up by the media and the star fucking public as the epitome of female perfection...something wrong happens in their head, something sinister and unGodly...they become less sexual. "But, wait a Minute Conspiracy..., you may say; "...what about Angelina Jolie...she is held high by the media, yet her love of rough, violent, kinky, sphincter swelling anal is well documented!" Well my lads...sit down and let Uncle Con explain how Celebrity and Sexuality works. See...Jolie didn't start off as a media darling...oh no. What she started out as was a hot mess of a casting couch cocksucker with daddy issues whom liked fucking her brother and drinking blood. She was a talented pariah..a bad bad dirty little slut who fucked older men and talked openly about her love of kinky violent bisexual sex. When you start off an inside outsider...a raunchy sleazy girl who just happens to act and be exotically don't develop that "Holier than Anal" attitude, you are a little more open to the sharp sting and thong eating possibilities that a prolapsed poop shoot might provide. But a girl like Scarlett...who never went through a "Nasty slut" stage with the media, but instead was hailed from an early career as the second coming of Marylin tends to fuck up a girls mind...make her think.."Eh..I'm fucking hot..I don't need to give up my ass or swallow"; that's right..they tend to end up dead fish. Example..Jennifer Aniston...Super Hot from the start, married Pitt...and soon after the brother hit the road for the fertile warm embrace of Angelinas warm 3+ inputs. Why? No Anal I'm positive was a large part of it. Same with guy after the next...all moving on within weeks or a few months. Why? Agents will say..they grew apart; but the truth probably lies buried in the cold closed recesses of her tightm ample and yet unfurrowed glory hole at the end of her barely untouched Taint Treasure trail.

Umm, yes on the rack, but no on the "hot chick". Look closer. At her face. She's not hot. At all.

  • ...they're inadequate adversaries for the toughest Avengers. I know they have a long history in the comics. But it doesn't look like this is going to be a deep-space adventure where all kinds of cosmic craziness can be brought into play. It looks pretty Earth-bound. So the Skrulls are good opponents for Cap & Hawkeye, and more than a match for the average SHIELD flunky. But Thor and Hulk and Iron Man need something bigger to really tear into. With them against Skrulls, it's going to be one of two things: 1) boring, repetitive action where they use their overwhelming force against wimpy enemies, or 2) the toughest Avengers get hamstrung by some lame super-trick, leaving it up to the weakest leads (or, heaven forbid, someone in SHIELD) to save the day. (If it's Black Widow, I'm getting a refund on my ticket.) Both of those are hackneyed prospects. We've got THOR, HULK, and IRON MAN in the SAME FILM. They need something to go toe-to-toe with. Loki's been done, the Cosmic Cube would be kind of lame. Skrull spaceships? Neat, but underwhelming. So what will the answer be? Who is going to fight the most powerful trio of super-characters to ever share a film? It's significant. An event. It needs to be treated that way. I'll definitely be in a seat on opening night to find out, but it better be a good one.

Mixed opinion on the new Cap costume, but really like Thor's

    by kevred

Bare arms and longer hair (liked the THOR film a lot, but really disliked his hair in it). At least from the snippet in the teaser, this is looking like it could be good old fashioned Thor. Love how bright and bold Cap's costume is; no apologies or black jumpsuits here. But the weird helmet thing seems to obscure the actor more than it needs to. Having it be more of a mask, with exposed ears and his actual head shape more apparent, would look better. I'm not even talking about authenticity - it just looks a little weird with the slighty-raised-helmet look. The ridged "goggle" areas around his eyes and "no-ears" look odd. Wonder what the odds are we'll see Thor and Hulk tussle in this one?

Alright, I'm digging the idea of the Skrulls being the villains. I am hoping they go full force with the Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe, as that would be amazing to see them mind-fuck the Avengers. And I hope they go with the classic look of the Skrulls (green, pointy-eared, grooved chins), rather than the human-looking ones in the Ultimates (I don't remember them calling them Skrulls, either). I prefer Caps suit from the First Avenger better than this one, but I didn't like that one either until I saw it in action. Don't really care for the Hawkeye character, but Renner is a good enough actor, so I'll give him a chance. Can't wait to see what the Hulk looks like in this one.

I haven't read the script, but I've talked to someone who has. I know way more about this film than I really want to know. BUT - I don't know how the dialogue is, what the scene constructions are, what the relationships are like. I don't know the specifics of the action, but the scope of it. And the draft that was read, never specified what came out of the dimensional portal as being aligned with any specific Marvel alien race. Wasn't described as SKRULL or KREE. Flying chariots? check. Giant monsters? check. Super Science? Check. Going to be epic. Unless it all looks stupid, but these pics look badass. So I'm inclined to think badass.

Anyway if you look at those pics, the Skrulls are shapeshifters. There's more than one sheild there. Cap is on top of a car surrounded by cops. It's highly likely Cap is fighting a doppleganger version of himself and the cops don't know who is who. Whedon is into that kind of stuff. Buffy and Angel had moments of it. @the founder re: Skrulls as inadequate villains

    by kevred

Maybe I didn't explain myself well enough on that point. You're completely right that, taken as a whole, the Skrulls are powerful enough to be worthy adversaries. They are the prototypical alien invasion, aliens in disguise, and to take on a whole alien race, with ray guns and spaceships and all, is a huge task for Avengers and SHIELD. But my point is that the real heavies - Thor and Hulk and Iron Man - need something more interesting to do on screen than to just be really efficient and large-scale about taking out aliens which, one on one, aren't that tough. Without some greater individual nemesis, it'll be like Star Wars if the the bad guys were only the Stormtroopers. A big part of the Skrulls is deceit - disguise, infiltration. That can make for some good fun in a movie. But that's not enough for a film with Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man. Are they just going to be throwing heavy blows against big spaceships? If the bad guys are just a bunch of individual aliens in ships, then we've seen that film already, a hundred times, and about 10 times in the last year. It's Independence Day. Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man don't need to be in that movie. And Loki's great, but they can't very well just re-use him as the main baddie so soon. Plus, Thor beat him alone, so his cache as a villain for the whole team is diminished. Now, as a long-time comic fan, I'm almost certainly going to enjoy this film. I don't want any of this to sound like complaining, because I don't know what the heck they're doing, none of us do. Just expressing the wish that this trio of most-powerful-heroes-ever-depicted-on-screen (with apologies to Superman) would seem wasted without proper individual adversaries. Someone or someones that the rest of the good guys simply cannot handle, cannot even consider facing.

  • Aug. 17, 2011, 3:10 p.m. CST

@goldfingah - WETA *and* ILM? Now that would be terrific.

    by kevred

I'm a lifelong reader, I always like authentic choices, but I like the look of Evans without any mask at all more than this version of it. It makes me start to wonder if the film needs a hero at the center of it like a maskless Evans could be. He convinced me without the mask in the Cap film; I'd hate to see him blunted by silly headgear in this one.

Seriously, Cap would not wear his WWII outfit in modern day for the same reason our soldiers don't use the same clothing and equipment we used in WWII. We have different, more protective materials now, we have ways to gather intel so a soldier doesn't have to lug everything on every mission. This is the ultimates cap, who has the basic suit and adds what he needs. Think of how bad this could have been...I am extremely happy with what has been shown.

  • Aug. 17, 2011, 5:24 p.m. CST

@kevred you make a good counter argument but.....

    by The Founder

the whole point of the Avengers as a team of heroes coming together is to face a threat no single hero can handle. I will admit that an alien invasion from the Skrulls would be a huge task for Shield and the current line up of Avengers. Despite Hulk and Thor being there I personally don't think they have enough muscle. IM is good but his suit is tech based. It would seem to me that an advanced Alien race could compromise Stark's armor computer systems. Maybe an invasion is something that could've been done for a final film with more Avengers. It would be costly though. I feel the Skrulls potential as it stands now will be lessened in the movie cause realistically an entire alien race against 6 Avengers and Shield is a little laughable. This is where you would need all of Earth's superhuman populace and the entire military from many different countries. Unfortunately something that grand would be way to costly. I see your point on individual skrulls going up against Hulk or Thor, so a more formidable villain like Thanos would be welcomed. They can save him for sequels. As it stands now we may be debating for nothing cause it may not even be the Skrulls or not all of them, just some acting on their own for whatever purpose. It may be the Kree, who knows for certain. I just hope Marvel pulls it off.

  • As much as I hate to say it cause he doesn't fit T'Challa and I like Will Smith but if you wanna see a BP movie done well and with a proper budget it's going to have to Will Smith. No studio is gonna commit a quality budget on an African superhero unless they have star power. As it stands Will Smith is the only black actor with box office drawing power in Hollywood. Denzil is too old and he can't match Smith's box office clout.

  • Aug. 17, 2011, 11:57 p.m. CST

    Bankability is over rated.

    by Phategod2

How bankable was Christian Bale before Batman Begins, How bankable was Hemsworth, and Evans? Will Smith was bankable in Wild Wild West and how did that turn out? Now I dont know the budget on Blade but people fail to realize that Blade restarted the Comic book movie genre. A good enough director may be able to compel a worthy budget (unless Fox owns the rights to the Black Panther).

  • Aug. 18, 2011, 3:38 a.m. CST

Why would you need a "bankable" black star for Black Panther

    by Continentalop

The guy wears a mask that completely covers his face, and T'Challa is no way near as important of alter ego as Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark or Clark Kent. Hell, he doesn't even have a secret identity and the Black Panther garb is a ceremonial garb so he doesn't even have a reason to show his face that often. Black Panther is a part that was meant for studios to cast the best black actor, not the biggest name available.

    by neomotion

  • You can' compare white actors to black actors when it comes to budget and studios taking a risk. They can cast a relative unknown attractive white male and the movie will succeed because a lot more people look at the material as well. With a black lead it's not like that. It comes across as a black movie. I stand by my comments. Hollywood isn't going to pour a 150 million into a comic featuring an African American or black lead. Not going to happen. They will consider it too risky cause they feel the mainstream will think it's a black movie. Not many films with a large black cast has broke a 100 million at the box office. I don't like it but it's the truth. Maybe if Hollywood actually steered away from the typical black cultural and stereotypical crap and just have black actors actually act human and dump the need to place so many cultural references in films then they'll succeed more. Hey look here I'm black, never mind the fact that you can look at me and tell so I'm going to say "Dayum" and "ahh Hell Nah" every other line. Hollywood is too cliched and not nearly as open minded as people think. No one wants to be first but they will be second.

  • I'm sure their is some out their and have the talent but sense most black directors are reduced to doing black films I can't really make a call on who'll be good. Maybe Antoine Fuqua, he's pretty solid.
