RE-UPDATED!! Now With Captain America On-Set!! Joss Whedon Makes Cleveland All Explody!!
Merrick again, again...
The SpoilerTV team have further pics from THE AVENGERS shoot - featuring Chris Evans in his new/upated Captain America costume.
This outfit was glimpsed in the AVENGERS tease which accompanied the recent CAPTAIN AMERICA movie, and was put on display at Comic-Con. To the best of my knowledge, this is the best look we've had at Evans in the modernized costume, although it's possible I may've missed something along the way (been hamstrung with wicked pneumonia).
Punch the Captain to see a gallery of more!

Merrick again...
AICN reader Tom called our attention to Medical Mutual of Ohio's Facebook page - which features a few more photos and some nice video of the explosions seen below. Look for an entry beginning with
He also pointed us towards THIS embed featuring a tons of extras, running, and banging (I don't mean the extras were banging while running...ah, never mind...)

That's what Joss Whedon has to say about your crappy intersections!

Pittsburgh is great! I go up there every year for a family reunion.

explosions in a crowded street during a car chase? yeah we have seen it a million times before in multiple action movies, even in b and z movie ones.
When a movie is about a GROUP of super-heroes which has an alien god,a super-soldier,a man operating the most advanced weapon in the world and also the strongest, near invicible creature in the world,i expect the scale of the action in the movie, to be in par with the power level of that group.
I expect the action to be in an EPIC scale,i expect to be breathtaking, groundbreaking,i expect to see those powerful heroes fighting other powerful villains or aliens or something, and i expect my jaw to fall of my mouth.
Explosions in a street during a car chase should be the cherry on the cake, not the grand attraction.
GOT IT MR WHEDON? -

Save your complaints about "not epic enough" when you see the finished product.

...you guys crack me up!
-
I don't think substituting Euclid Avenue for Penn Station should be looked on as some foreshadowing doom for the movie (or its budget). Its much more cost-effective and efficient to film generalized street chaos outside of NYC. Also, they may simply no longer be allowed to do explosions of that kind so near a landmark like Penn. And to be fair, I think they have, or will, be shooting in NYC.
-

Downtown is very nice. The sports arenas are also very nice. But that's not the problem, it's when you drive into east Cleveland that you'll understand why it's considered a crappy town. I'm fairly well traveled, and I've never been anywhere as shitty as East Cleveland. It's so bad I was having trouble believing it was reality.
And the worst thing about Cleveland isn't even East Cleveland, it's that there isn't any hot women. ANYwhere. I've been all around this country, and I have a very broad spectrum of what I think is an attractive woman, but they are few and far between in Cleveland.
Never been anywhere with a complete lack of attractive women, if my friend and I saw an even decent looking girl she was "Cleveland hot".

But it would be called "The Authority". Although, that one might require an NC-17 rating...

@playkins: When in the Ultimates did Loki get the Cosmic Cube?
by chewtoy
It's obviously not an adaptation of "The Ultimates". First clue? Cap's not an asshole.
Now, it may merge elements of the beginnings of The Avengers (Loki manipulating the team to fight Hulk) and the Ultimates (if the Skrull reports turn out to be true), but its definitely not a direct adaptation of either. -

Biloxi Ms the second largest gambling destination on earth. Their hard rock casino actually has bands playing in it all the time. Judas Priest is coming next. I'm flying in for that shit. That town rocks. I'm touring across America and so far Houston had the Alamo Drafthouse which I thought was the best theater on earth. But that's all know about Houston except that it's hotter than anywhere else in America and so big you could never cover the whole area. But this little gambling town on the beach is actually cooler than anywhere. The Beau Rivage casino built by belagio guy is better than belagio because it has waterfront views. They got 24 hour bars and drinking in the streets. It's potentially the coolest little town with everything to do on a beach with a great coliseum to boot. Next up is Florida. I can tell you the women started getting hot after Phoenix. So far it's been an upslope where they're getting hotter as I go.
-
I had no idea killik was so naive/mentally challenged until I read that comment above where he bitches about the street explosions looking not '' epic '' enough. This is how movies are made. They blow stuff up and then add in lots of stuff using a computer and then they have different camera angles and then they edit things together so that it * ends up * looking epic.
Wow. How dumb are you? I'm being serious. -
It's okay when Avengers behind the scenes get leaked but not Dark Knight Rises?
Hypocrites. -
not only would I pay to see that, I'd contribute to them starting over. Speaking as someone born and raised in NE Ohio, you could quite frankly level all of Cuyahoga Co. and most of if not all of Summit Co. (home to Akron, the only city Cleveland feels comfortable belittling) and no one would notice.
On the "bright" side, it least it's a nice place to film for what I pray is dirt cheap compared to say a real city...but I digress. -

I had hoped for wonderful things from the Captain America movie. It was spot on for the first hour. Why bother going to the trouble to lovingly create the set up and establish relationships, then ruin it with incoherent plotting and rushed pacing?
Incidently, the teaser looks like a promo for a tv movie.

-
I really don't know why, but since I really really hate Whedon nowadays and Marvel is getting more full of themselfes by the second, a small part of me hopes this movie fails terribly.
I liked the first IM and I liked Thor but I'm really not sure about this one. -
Mr. Clean and Smurfette. It's frigging TERRIBLE! Strike 1, Whedon.
-
But all four of the original members were Noo Yawkahz, that's my point.
-
And by "better", I mean less afraid to be what he is. Nolan's one-color palette looks really timid to me, next to the Avengers' technicolor variety.
It is pretty crazy to think that we'll have Evans in that bright, slightly goofy suit being taken seriously throughout a superhero-team film. This hasn't successfully been done before, and there's nothing at all subtle about Cap. They could have easily taken him down the X-Men/TDK route, muting the colors, making the suit more technical, etc, but they've gone full-speed the other way.
Think about it, folks: these are the brightly-colored tights we've been wanting for over 10 years now. They're finally doing it. We're going to see how it works.
Me, I don't really care if it works 100%. I'd rather have a spirited, bold, brighty-colored Secret Wars panorama than the timid, too-cool-for-school black-jumpsuit dreck that becomes boring after the first time you watch it. Give us a comic movie that's not afraid to be a COMIC movie.
The Avengers teaser does show some degree of "none more black" and modern slickness, but there are indications that Whedon knows this has to be allowed to be fantasy. I hope so. -

why not go for a more practical, functional costume? the red and white stripes are particularly silly. that said, im still somewhat optimistic about the movie as a whole. and its bound to look much better in the finished product.
the TDKR set pics are equally underwhelming, but i know its gonna look a lot different on the big screen.
Dont panic guys! Way too early. -
He looks like a superhero. Which is fortunate. Because he's a superhero.
-
I wish the people dissing this Cap costume would just remember the X-Men movies where they all looked nothing like their comic-book iterations. This Cap suit doesn't look perfect in this picture, but he is still 100% recognizably Captain America.

But i think its risky. They couldve gone with practical, martial non-costumes for all the characters - including cap - just to avoid the sillyness factor. But looks like Whedon has decided to go all in here, which takes balls.
Not the safe choice though.

You guys don't even know what the hell you're talking about.
-
Cap's WWII costume had big shoulder pads, and other "armored" sections, which gave the overall effect of making Chris Evans look bigger and bulkier. Here he looks too "sleek," which is another way of saying "skinny." I liked the "big shouldered" look for Cap, and for any superhero, really, as opposed to what a "real" person looks like (I'm looking at you, Routh-Superman.)

The WWII costume was better. The boots and gloves on this one are kinda cool, but the rest of it looks like a Halloween costume.
Still rooting for the movie, tho. -
I hate the no wings look.
-
Aug 16, 2011 2:32:10 PM CDT
this suit is much better. the ww2 suit looked like ass.
by the_one_man_gang
Joe Johnson is a motherfuckin hack for ruining what could have been a great movie. worst of the marvel bunch so far. seriously, who would give that guy a job at this point?
-

There were wings on his head at the USO show in Cap...
by carlotta_valdes
...an how did they look to you?
-
I think the main problem is the helmet. Looks odd from certain angles.
-
he has wings they are painted on.
-
The bullet makes a sound... somewhat quieter than normal since the front end of the vibrations would be absorbed while it touched the shield.
The shield does not. -
I assume he has flash bangs in the utility belt.
-
I'm not really sure how that would work. If it absorbs that much energy then bullets would just slide down it instead of bouncing off. Since they bounce I think it makes sense to have them make a sound.
-
I always just kind of assumed that Cleveland looked tore up like that all the time.
-
And complaining that the writer has made spelling mistakes. Really not fair to anyone involved to take a bad picture and then complain about it.
-
This is his first suit in the modern era. He and Stark are stll not on good terms. Tony will make fun of the suit etc. In act three after they are buddy buddy, Tony will make him a new (cooler) suit just like *sniff* his dad did.
-
was awesome
-
grapma doesn't really mean anything
-
Just Kidding! But seriously, I have three words for it: Fab-U-Lous...and that's not a compliment. When did Josh W turn into Joel Schumacker? The not so ambiguously gay avenger. "Does this head gear make me look like a giant blue penis?" Yes, Cap. Yes.
-
MAYBE TO PUT STUFF IN.
Think Cargo pockets.
think. goddamn fool.
STANKED. -
Aug 16, 2011 2:50:54 PM CDT
That suit is so fresh, all it needed was the wings!! at least beveled wings would have did it.
by northtronic
-
so at which point does light reflect/not reflect when it meets the event horizon of a black hole? to absorb would assume all impact related vibrations be non-existent, regardless as to which material initiates the vibration. hence...no sound..silent shield.
-
Aug 16, 2011 2:59:29 PM CDT
His helmet looks like the top of a condom.hell,he does look like a condom.
by killik
atrocious suit,really atrocious.
-
Cannot believe I am saying this, but yeah I think the wings would make that costume ok, I keep looking at the pic sayin' "It's just off a bit"
Not in love with the boots either. -
righto.
-
the people's republic of china... The only thing made in America these days are lazy fat nerds. That single star with soon turn red - to match your national debt we keep buying "GONG!"

I'm sure he'll do a great job, I mean I'm actually confident he will
by jaka
But its still weird to me that Joss "Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse" Whedon is directing the Avengers movie. Unfortunately I don't actually care for the material, either. But I do hope he knocks this one out of the park so maybe he can have he freedom to do something else of his own creation.
-
It's the Skrulls.
-
although, im not 100% sure of whedon
-
People will bitch about anything.
-
And that explosion "not being epic enough"? There are some Grade A fucking retards running around today.
Oh wait, this is TB. I also hear that water is wet and ice is cold. -
that's why it looks blowed-out straight on. It's not sitting flush with his skull.
-
CAp looks Awful
-
Just felt like saying that stupid word.
-
Aug 16, 2011 4:21:23 PM CDT
GODDAMMIT my last post was completely deleted( i dont think cap looks awful
by qjinx
I just typed a long message about how greatful we should be about this movie and all my post printed was the first sentence which was mocking the assholes on here who hate everything. Now all my post says is "CAp looks Awful" Jesus its that a setting on AICN now? no matter what, the posts just come out negative?
I dont think cap looks awful, im loving every minute of this, and im looking forward to my childhood dream of an avengers movie
HArry, whats going on with my posts being cut down to only teh first three words? -
... instead of some guy on the P.A. saying "BOOM! ... BOOM! ... BOOM! ..."
-
Not so much Mr. Lewis. But definitely the news.
lol -

so cleveland is the go to city for blowing shit up, I wonder why? I guess cause every bolted Cleveland like Lebron did
by maxcherry

I've seen these shots, plus others on other sites. In those shots, I saw some fancy looking alien gun thingy, and a dude standing around dressed in a mocap suit. Alien gun prop + mocap suits = Skrulls. So, just guessing....1st act: Loki does some of his trickster god voodoo to make the Hulk go nuts (more nuts than usual). Avengers are called in to stop him. 2nd Act: Avengers realize Loki was behind it, gear up to kick his secretly-a-frost-giant ass. 3rd Act: Avengers realize Loki is allied w/shapeshifting aliens, and giant battle with Aliens ensue, with all characters doing badass things while being witty as hell. Thor probably has some sort of epic confrontation with Loki, with dialogue calling back to the Thor movie.
Now, just to be clear: I'm excited as hell for this movie, and while I'm pretty sure I have the general bones of the flick down, I'm still ridiculously excited to see it all woven together! -
I'm sure that during the first two acts there will be all sorts of nifty "Man-out-of-time" stuff with Cap, and I'm guessing that the whole "I'm in a place that I really don't understand" factor will lead to some male-bonding between him and Thor.
Also: Yay for non CGI explosions! : D -
i dont think so.Thor will be a 2nd character.Cap will probably befriend a woman ,probably some agent from SHIELD (not Black Widow) and they will eventually become lovers.
-
I don't think he can direct action for shit. But I like that he is actually making a superhero movie with actual superheroes that actually LOOK like superheroes. The iconography is 90% of comics. Is there a famous comic book superhero whose outfit is chinos and a polo shirt? Fuck no, because we see that shit EVERYWHERE. The look is very important. Unless you're Brian Singer making the X-MEN right after THE MATRIX just exploded onto the scene. And the line "What were you expecting, yellow spandex"? Is annoying as hell. Spandex? Sure, if it's a Halloween party. This Captain America suit is not spandex, and if anyone saw the hi-res pics of it a few weeks ago it would be obvious that it's exactly what it should be. It's great. Bring on THE AVENGERS!
-
I haven't see Captain America so maybe this is addressed, but clearly those are present day cars being blown up.... how is it going to be explained that the Avengers waited 70 years to get started?
-
Aug 16, 2011 7:26:53 PM CDT
those explosions are cool and all, but the real question about this flick has to be is Nathan Fillion in this thing?
by lv_426
He should be in every movie?
Fillion as Catwoman.
Fillion as Churchhill.
Fillion as Rosa Parks.
Godammit! We need more Nathan Fillion people! -
An abomination. Get ready for the floodgate of bad reviews, it's worse than we thought.
Rose McGowen shall be accepting her razzie round about February. -
See what happens when you DON'T steal from The Dark Knight? That's ok, I'm sure all the "bros" who are borderline gay but hide it to fit in the with the frat and only post ads on Craigslist at 2 AM when they're drunk will just go GAGA for that fancy new Cap suit, very Cool.
-
yOu are BAAAAD motherfuckA!
I LAUGHED KOBES ass off wiTH that one! -
Aug 16, 2011 10:38:57 PM CDT
Will Favs be in this? At least a cameo, getting RJD some cocaine or something?
by doctorwho?
-
They should have gone with the same material covering his head that the rest of the costume is made out of. Then he could have some honest-to-God wings on the sides of his head.
-
Or is it a total waste of $13 and 2 hours?
-
I would totally buy those. And I hope they got the Dr. Pepper out before it exploded. Because that would be a friggin' tragedy.
One more thing, should the people up there be breathing in that explosion? -
This one is cool, but what I liked about his suit in CA:TFA was that it looked like a military uniform that sort of "accidentally" looked like Captain America's costume if that makes any sense.
Because let's face it, on the comic page it's fine, but if taken literally into real life, Captain America has one of the more ridiculous superhero costumes out there.
This one looks too "obviously" designed to look like a costume and a little TOO close to the comic book.
Sure he can kick your ass into a little beef pasty, but you'd be laughing it off the entire time while he's doing it. -
...would you rather 1) be working in Cleveland on the biggest movie of 2012 (your DREAM movie because you're a huge nerd like me and everyone on this site) b/c Ohio is attracting huge movies due to a 30% tax credit for hiring locals, a wealth of competent crew & film professionals and locations that can double for every urban and rural terrain except for mountain and desert or 2) be doing whatever the fuck pathetic day job you're doing in whatever anonymous suburb in anonymous America you live in and taking the time online to shit on a city you've never even visited? Cleveland is a nice, cool, sincere place - if you don't know, ask someone who's actually spent any time there. Downtown is lackluster compared to some, greater area has anything and everything you could want. Guess what? Manufacturing has left the US in the last 40 years - the same thing has happened to every industrial city in the US. At least Cleveland has the guts and the foresight to try something else.
-
Have we learned nothing from B&R and Singerman returns?
Oh, and before some fanboi screams "but Joss isn't gay!" Grow the fuck up.
That Cap costume is a fucking spandex nightmare. -
I don't say this often, but, are you fucking kidding me?! Why is The Avengers starting 70 years after Captain America? I know you haven't seen the movie, but geez... go back into suspended animation!
-
Everything else looks fine. (Can you take the shoulder stuff out in post, Joss!? Please?)
-
Captain America sucked, and Chris *whatever his name* meat puppet still looks like a pouty child under that mask. I really preferred the "parachutes are for girls" Captain America from the Ultimates. In fact, I'll take the Ultimates as the official movie adaptation of the Avengers.
Sorry Joss. Marvel got me twice this summer with two bad adaptations, I can't do it again dude.
-
Tom Hardy will break Christian Bale's back, and not in the gay fashion..
-
I hate to break it to you, but the biggest movie of 2012, both in size and scope, is going to be "The Hobbit" - followed fairly closely by TDKR...
The Avengers will more than likely be disappointing, i'm sad to say. -
hate that town
-
I'd kill to live in Cleveland
-
Aug 17, 2011 2:42:22 AM CDT
Sorry guys, Pittsburgh and Cleveland are essentially the same.
by jediwise
Been to both. Not that much different.

I can't believe that's the best they can do with C.A costume.
by ganymede3010
I think the one from the C.A movie looked more modern and visually appealing than this watered down version. That suit is a complete eyesore.
-
Aug 17, 2011 3:19:25 AM CDT
the Avengers should rival the biggest even movies of 2012
by winona_ryders_pussy_juice
It has a ton of momentum going for it. Iron Man is almost as big as Batman now. All of the Avengers solo movies were successful. The teaser looks very good.
The Hobbit is going to be huge but it has the prequel, retread factor.
TDKR is probably a lock for 300 million by default but the Joker is m.i.a.
I'm a huge fan of Nolan and his Batman films, and Jackson's LOTR series, but I'm most curious to see the Avengers at this point. -
its the round helmet that makes him look weird...
-
The goddamn suit doesn't look that bad. Who gives two rat shits anyway, it's a grown man carrying a fucking salad bowl and fighting crime. Get over yourselves, it's a fucking comic book movie, not Schindler's List.
-
I'm still perplexed how I seem to be the only person that absolutely loved that movie.
-
is like judging Chicago by Cabrini Green or something (at least before they cleaned up). Every city has a 'bad area.' But Cleveland also has some really nice areas. Cleveland Hts especially was a great place to hang out when I was a teenager. Heck, even Akron, which most people think of as an industrial hellhole, actually has quite a cool little progressive downtown area known as Highland Square, as well as some amazing forest preserves, better than any I've seen anywhere in the Midwest.
oh, and Joss rules. -
Judging Cleveland by the east Cleveland slums is like judging Chicago for Cabrini Green or something. Every city has its bad areas, but there's some great parts of Cleveland. Hanging out in Cleveland Hts was pretty great as a teenager. Even Akron, which most people think of as an industrial hellhole has a nice little progressive area downtown called Highland Square and some of the most amazing forest preserves anywhere in the midwest.
oh, and Joss rules. -
It's full of Professionals and Pornstars...how bad can it be?
Plus...it is the namesake city of the "Cleveland Steamer"...for that deviant fact alone it gets the Conspiracy Thumbs up. -
This costume looks cheap and not very creative--he really does need the little wings at the side of his head or it just looks like those plastic kid masks you get at Toys R Us. Please just because there are a lot of heroes in this--don't chintz on the individual characters--make them all cool--and please give Hawkeye a mask and don't let Sm Jackson turn into an over-the-top clown all the way through the movie...

Love the Captain America costume: Bold, bright, unapologetic.
by matineer
I would have seen this anyway, but this is a good sign.
-
I meant it's based (I should have said inspired by) the Ultimates universe, and is more or less an amalgam of the events of Ultimates 1& 2.
-
... getting out of control. You know they burned thousands of Jews during the Black Death just for shits & giggles, just in case they were responsible? It's the "otherness" some of you apply to Jews that allows them to be victimized again and again - like the blacks (two minorities that have a lot more in common than is generally understood)...You guys really need to educate yourselves.
-
Other than Dollhouse, he hasn't done anything bad in my mind. His direction of Serenity more than proved he can handle a SiFi action film. At least, that's my opinion, and that's all that really matters here. No other opinions here are at all valid, it's just the rantings of idiots.
-
though some of you who are less than capable of rational and complex thought will never understand. I do not like the government of Israel. I deplore many of their actions against the native inhabitants who have just as much rights as Israel, but are constantly being denied them.
It's not the Jews who are doing it. It's the Israeli government. There is no religion in politics, only the pretense. The leaders of Israel are no more Jewish than our leaders are Christian.
I know this; I'm Jewish! Such irony! Don't you just wanna puke all over yourselves and rub it in? Of course, I'm a nonreligious, America-dwelling Jew. And I don't care for the actions of OUR government, either. But that's another tale. -
Lose the shoulder thingys and get the head right, and it woudl have been a lot better costume.
-
I loved the Captain America movie and am looking forward to The Avengers (have been for most of my life...ever since I first started getting into comics in the 70s), but I'm not big on the new helmet. I liked the old one. I'm not too sure about those silver "rank" stripes on his shoulders either.
-
But that kid in the video is gonna be gay (or already is). I can't believe he got to see something so cool and he fanned the air away like he was bothered by it. What a fairy.. and this is coming from a gay guy.
