GODZILLA 2000 to have a wide theatrical U.S. release'

Published at:  Jan 24, 2000 5:42:27 AM CST

This is the first I've heard of this. I hope this is true. I haven't seen any of the 80's or 90's Toho GODZILLA movies on the big screen, and I would just love to see one up there. If you hear confirmations on this... let me know... till then, just think of this as... 'WISHFUL THINKING'

Hi Harry,

I have some
inside information about Godzilla 2000. Its going to get a theatre
release in the States sometime this summer. Its going to premiere at
G-fest 2000 at the American Cinematique. After that in August it will
gets its wide release in the Thearte's. Sorry I don't have more but Im
not in the Inner Circle just the fringe of it. If I hear more I relay it
to you.

Thanks

    Godzilla Rocks

    by gruesome

Darth Bond, Have you even SEEN any Godzilla movies made in the last 10 years? How does the release of this hurt you? Why do you have open your fool mouth just to say how you don't like it? Why not just let people that ARE familiar with the directions that Godzilla has taken enjoy the idea that we could get it on the big screen.

    "plot"

    by z-man

If you're interested, there is some information on the plot of this project in Barry's Temple of Godzilla, at stomptokyo.com. I loved most of the 90's Japanese Godzilla films, but this one sounds pretty ludicrous.

    by rolande

Godzilla ate so much ass at the box office and critically, just a couple years ago, you think people are gonna line up to see this one, no matter who makes it?
I'd rather eat flaming razor blades than entertain the idea of seeing this flick. And to the guy who was vigorously opposing any thoughts contrary to a "Yay, me like Godzilla" attitude: How can you read my posts with your head waaaay up your ass?

    Plot

    by gibbon

Yuji Shinoda is the expert on Godzilla. He suspects that there is a pattern to the big lizard's appearances. Godzilla shows up and attacks a nuclear power plant adding to the theory. Following an attack on a power plant, a 200 meter rock appears off the coast of Japan and flies at Godzilla. The rock is blasted open to reveal a UFO inside which attacks the big guy. That's the synopsis listed at tnmc.org anyway.

Good news, but it'll never come to my town.

I'd rather watch Godzilla on the big screen any day, but the theatres in my town (and I suspect in most of the country) are too full of movies about teens humping apple pies...

Godzilla kicks ass...well the Japan one does

    by scott1458

If you haven't seen them, the Godzilla movies of the 90's are freaking fantatic. EVEN on pan and scan EVEN on the small screen EVEN on the LP mode, they are great and entertaining films, and yes the weakest of them (Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla) beats the tar out of that piece of s...well you know.

    by the great one

I doubt this posting. However, if this turns out to be true, I'll be first in line to see it. I'm still in awe of Godzilla Vs. Destroyer (The best one made IMHO) and am very interested in G2K. One thing though: is this a new continuity or does the film continue with junior as the new Godzilla?

  • Actually, this one's already been released in Japan there Darth. Maybe you already know that but I really couldn't tell. Most G movies are pretty ludicrous anyhow, but c'mon, it's Godzilla! I just can't get enough of watching Big Green stomp meticulously crafted miniature sets. Now that I think of it though, why would they want to give this a wide release though? I'm a big fan, but lets face it, how much business could this possibly generate here in the states to vindicate a wide release? I'm just being realistic.

    A WIDE release?...

    by danhelm

Somehow I don't think most people would flock to see this, thanks to that piece of crap US version. It's definitly going to be something a diehard fan would see. We might see a limited release, one with little advertising but something the fanboys will watch. I'm with Harry, I'm a curious as hell to see a Toho's 90s version of Godzilla.

  • At long last--a new Godzilla film! And what can we expect this time? The same old radioactive lizard? Well, I happen to know that this time the man INSIDE the costume will be working from the Tyrone Guthrie model of dramaturgical technique in which carefully calculated repetitive expression is used with only minute variations to demonstrate a series of intelligibly prescribed actions in order to form an intelligibly prescribed design. The Stanislavski element is there, man, I'm telling you it is there! Not since Jet Jaguar's controversial performance in GODZILLA VS. MEGALON has there been such a suggestion of the actor's interpretive craft utilized in a more...whoa...gotta go watch SLIDERS now!

THE IRON GIANT would not fight Godzilla

    by todd

All Thumbs, I do not think this would be a good idea for a film. THE GIANT is wrong for the part. His transformation and growth have rendered Him too docile and gentle to be affective in the role of warrior in this case. There was a time when THE GIANT would have become aggressive or violent when reacting to sign stimuli such as a gun or weapon. But He has undergone a transformation that allows Him to choose His nature and become something more then His programming should ever have allowed. To participate in a film that is about violent conflict would diminish this transformation. This is why casting Him opposite Godzilla would be a poor choice. Furthermore, I do not believe THE IRON GIANT could be provoked by the Godzilla because it has no weapons THE GIANT would react too. And also consider that Godzilla is a living biological life form and I feel that THE IRON GIANT would not wish harm on it. Sure Godzilla is big and intimidating, but is Godzilla evil? I think not, he is just misunderstood and different. Kind of like THE GIANT Himself. We humans on the other hand tend to react with fear, anger and violence when encountering something big and intimidating because we cannot see past our own subconscious projections. This is not the case with THE IRON GIANT. If He were cast opposite Godzilla we would not have battles and bloodshed, but understanding and compassion. And it is this scenario finally that could possibly be made into a vital, life furthering film with THE IRON GIANT and Godzilla. But not one about ass kicking.

    Cheap follow-up!

    by nitekatt

It's actually a wise movie-sony needs to bridge the gap between the first and possible 2nd US'zilla film. They got a lot of flack for it not being like the original Japanese versions. so,they take G-2000,give it a good spit and polished dub job,and release it. Cost them what? $10 million tops with prints and advertising.

They'ed make that back with a $50 million take!

Sure beats those SLP Sony/Tri-Star video releases of Toho's international English dubs.

  • Ah ha! But just SUPPOSE that some form of freak radiation were to INFECT Clint Howard...effectively rendering him a GIANT! His already feverish mind would snap due to both the infective radiation AND his bald, unprotected head's now-closer proximity to the devestating rays of the sun! In a diabolical move destined to turn him into a GOD, he slips Iron Giant a mickey and rips out all of the robot's innards--THUS CREATING AN INVINCIBLE ROBOT SUIT!!! Meanwhile...on Monster Island, Godzilla is watching these events on a t.v. monitor which is still functioning within the wreckage of the Seatopia spaceship! He sees the trouble! He knows that "Iron Giant" is a seemingly unstoppable foe that no mere HUMAN army can best! Thus, into the breech leaps the the Greatest Mutant Lizard of Them All. Gotta go now...more whiskey waiting.

    I saw it!!

    by tokyo joe

I saw Godzilla 2000 in Shinjuku (Tokyo) and had the extreme pleasure of watching Godzilla stomp down the street which the cinema was under. A nicely timed earthquake at that point would have been really cool. (apart from being possibly fatal)

Plot is pretty much as described above, apart from the fact that the scary UFO reads Godzilla DNA and turns into a REALLY stupid looking monster with vampiric tendancies.

You can see Godzilla almost looks sorry for this bizarre freak of nature for a moment before beating it up a bit.

The battle is cool, the characters are fun and stereotyped, the plot is simple, the useage of some CGI is a little annoying in places, but overall Godzilla comes across as a smart, thinking monster who's seen it all before. (although I'd imagine he'd still be freaked out by a giant radioactive 300 ft Harry...)

A cool film that'll completely bomb if it gets an American theatre release.

    Godzilla 2000

    by ghidorah

Well, it's been confirmed today that G-2000 will INDEED be released in the states (according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter).

As questioned below, this will NOT be Junior (to all you G-Fans) taking over where Dad melted down at the end of G vs. Destoroyah, but yet ANOTHER timeline of Godzilla-ness, making this probably the third Japanese timeline for Godzilla history, 4th if you include the American G.

Much like the Heisei series (G-84 through Destroyah) this picks up as if only the very FIRST Japanese G-Film ever took place and then teh story goes on from there.

Apparently TOHO hopes that one day they will find the perfect lineage for the Big G and the rest will all be some sort of screwy alternate universe. Too bad, because the Heisei series of films (for simplicity's sake let's call that: the 90's Japanese G-films) were superior to anything that had been done since Honda's 60's films. (Novices need not question what we're talking about).

I'm sure American audiences will once again pay the big guy no heed (much like the very bad Americanization of Godzilla 1985). Too bad too. Like samurai films, there has to be a certain understanding of the culture to appreciate these films fully. Ah well, I hope the dubbing process goes well.

As all G-Fans know, nothing can ruin the G experience more than bad overdubbing (the chief reason reason why G-Films are NEVER taken seriously in the states....but there's another topic altogether)

At least Tri-Star bellied up and will distribute the REAL thing. (In joke: probably pan and scanned and in MONO) but at least it will be on the BIG screen .....uh.....somewhere in the states.

One last thing to anyone who cares:
Buy only letterboxed, Japanese versions with subtitles (usually badly translated...but at least you can HEAR the REAL actor speak with his own inflection)

    -Ghid

    Oh, my heads
