You think that when you die you go to Heaven. You come to The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
I loved the Phantasm films growing up and my favorite of the series is Phantasm II. It has a good chunk of the weirdness of the first movie mixed with a studio budget and director Don Coscarelli really coming into his own as a visual director. Seriously, watch Phantasm II (now that you can finally find it on DVD) and you’ll see a similar amount of visual energy to one of Coscarelli’s peers at the time, Sam Raimi. In fact there’s a nod to Raimi in the flick. I wonder how many Phantasm fans (phans?) have spotted it… I myself didn’t see it until I watched the movie on the big screen.
It’s one of my favorite ‘80s horror movies and I was psyched when the very well known effects man Mark Shostrom got in touch with some juicy BTS images. If you read his IMDB and were any kind of genre fan from the early ‘80s on you’ll be in awe of the stuff he’s worked on. From Freddy Krueger to From Beyond, Evil Dead II, Dick Tracy, X-Files and more.
Shostrom has a site called HelloBoss, which I encourage you to explore. A friend of his contacted me on his behalf and soon we were talking about running some high-res BTS shots in this column. I’m saving a nice chunk of them for my upcoming all-horror run of October BTS pics, but I had to put some of these Phantasm II shots out there… they’re just too cool.
Effects fans will note a very young Robert Kurtzman in the second and third shot. He’s the guy with the beard helping puppet the Tall Man’s head!
Thanks very much to Mark Shostrom (the long haired guy in the first two shots) for supplying the photos and to Dustin McNeill of the Phantasmarchives for instigating the contact! Click any of the below to embiggen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic is just fuckin’ great. Now what’re we gonna do?!?

Saw it on HBO, late night when I was about 12. Weird, cool, creepy movie

Phantasm II is nothing but all kinds of EPIC. Coscarelli invented an entire new world with these movies, he invented new monsters, a new kind of badguy and a whole goddamn mythology behing it. But I can't say how much Phantasm II is just a genius movie. It's a shame we're probably not going to get a PROPER finish.

I was a sad sad kid .. wait ...

I got an autographed copy of the Phantasm comic book in 2002!

It was part one in a new story that was supposed to wrap up everything. As I recall, the Tall Man has taken over the world and everyone is asleep (like the Matrix meets Nightmare on Elm St). It was interesting but I don't think they finished it.

The chick who played Rocky (the Army chick) signed it.

It was the first that introduced me 2 the series...

That said: "Reg, I love your head."

I first saw it a few years ago when a friend recommended it to me. The atmosphere created in this film is just amazing.

The quadruple barreled shotgun is actually the greatest thing ever
by starmin76

My friends and I made our own super 8 version back in the day.

actually i have seen something similar in a 70s spaghetti.although in the Phantasm it was way more cooler and more lethal.

please do tell us.

Maybe my favorite horror franchise ever, the first two films are great and the third was pretty decent. That last film had a low budget and it showed, nothing about that shit worked.
-
I still wan't Phantasm's End. Scrimm is probably too old now but being that the tall man is, well whatever the hell he is, I'll assume he can take other forms and it wouldn't kill me if a new actor took on the role.

All of these shots were featured in Fango back in the day...

I believe it was issue 75. Snuck in to see this on the big screen back in '88 when I was 13 and loved the shit out of it! I remember seeing the trailer on Poltergeist III and thinking, "DAMN, I wish I could be watching THAT instead!". Good times! Thanks, Quint!

WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T NEW LINE CINEMA HIRE DON COSCARELLI TO MAKE A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET MOVIE?!? I MEAN......
by CreepyThinMan
After part 4 they went with that fucking HACK Stephen Hopkins when either Coscarelli or Raimi would have been my top two choices.
-
He'll be at The Mad Monster Party with Brad Dourif... http://tinyurl.com/43d9n3m

Raimi had the Olds/Cosc had the Hemi Raimi had the chainsaw arm/Cosc had the quad-shotgun. There were other things I can't remember, but the Raimi reference in Phantasm II is in the scene where a goon is breaking up the bones left from a cremation. He dumps the ashes and stuff into a bag labeled Raimi, S (I believe.) Oh, and spoiler.
-
For years and years and years. Hell, even before falling asleep. I couldn't close my eyes and I was afraid to open them. Fuuuuu.
-
Thanks for that info :)
-
Three cheers to Mark Shostrom for his amazing work.
-
No. It's Dave Mustaine.
-
Thanks.. these films are very dear to me.
-
NO...It's NOT!
-
Maybe I should hunt down the second one. Also, found this Monster High OC based on "The Tall Man" named "Phantasma Tallman"- http://tinyurl.com/3qh83jy

Pay attention to the bags of ashes, it's not simply a nod to Raimi.
-
The Phantasm movies for me make a great triple bill 1 --> 2 --> 3, but the first transition is the best. That the response to mindbending horror is to grow up and hunt the fuck out that wierdness just seemed perfect to me. The hilarity of reinserting Michael Baldwin to the series going from 2 --> 3 I also enjoyed.
