Want To Hear Some Of Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Score?
Nordling here.
Thanks to SlashFilm for the heads-up - I thought THE SOCIAL NETWORK's score was amazing and I'm very happy to see David Fincher working with them again. Their "Hand Covers Bruise" worked so completely as a theme to that film - so sad, and longing. This score, from the Dragon Tattoo website, sounds appropriately creepy and haunting.
I haven't read the book or seen the original film - that's by choice, because I wanted Fincher's film to be my first exposure to it. Sounds like this one's going to be one of the films this winter that's going to rock everyone's world.
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO opens worldwide this Christmas. Nordling, out.

Why do I feel like this movie is gonna blow my socks off when I've already seen the original?

Oh yeah. 'Cause it's David Fincher. And this piece from Reznor sounds great. I'm liking Reznor the composer a whole lot.

by Raskolnikov_was_framed
just because those scores were loud and had lots of percussion does not mean they were better...both those scores were about as subtle as a chick grabbing your cock and saying "lets fuck" to quote my favorite of ol William, they were "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing"...like an infant shaking his rattle or a bunch of drunk idiots shooting guns in the air

TRON: Legacy by Daft Punk should have at least been nominated
by D.Vader
One of the best scores of last year. I prefer it GREATLY to Reznor's work on The Social Network.
-
i think this totally captures the feel of it. if youve read the books youd know what i mean. another win for Trent Reznor
-
You can't accuse TRON and Inception of having repetitive scores as a defense for the music in The Social Network. Kettle and pot and all that.

That's fucking trash. Trent Reznor is lucky any retard with Fruityloops can make "music"
by Mel
This guy knows nothing about music. that's a fact. this is just one long note on a synthesizer. and once again, its not a fucking score. a score is a book of music a conductor uses for an orchestra. this "music" had neither of those STOP CALLING IT A FUCKING SCORE ITS A FUCKING SOUNDTRACK
-
I said they were loud and bombastic which shouldn't be confused with quality...not to say they were bad they were both good...but I prefer the subtlety and wide range of emotion elicited by Rezner's Social Network score...were Tron and Inception both better for trailers and will they be played more? sure...not a sign of quality though...the ID4 and Armageddon scores got lots of replay too...Social Network was by far the more creative score...IMHO of course
-
I have no idea what caused my eyes to read the word "repetitive". Must be the alcohol I'm consuming... my bad! Anyway, aside from that, I actually believe the TRON score to be a bit more varied and creative than The Social Network. I heard the same strain over and over in that film. You may find TRON loud and bombastic (but that ignores all the quiet moments of the score, and fantastic pieces like "Adagio for TRON"), but I do find TSN to be pretty repetitive.

"melgibsoncalledmethenword", you need to shut your ignorant fucking mouth...
by J242
You have stated (incredibly, mind numbingly incorrectly) that Reznor "knows nothing about music" yet what music have you produced, hmmm? One long note on a synthesizer? You obviously didn't even listen to it considering he's using a fucking xylophone at points you overly opinionated , under educated fucktard. PS, it IS a score. A "soundtrack" is individual songs played during a film the majority of time by a group of different artists and the individual songs are licensed for use in the film. This IS a "score" because he is COMPOSING music for the film specifically. Quit talking out of your ass you moronic fuck.

-that's by choice, because I wanted Fincher's film to be my first exposure to it.
by Jay
Pu-fucking-lease. If this was a remake of a Fincher film you'd be saying how nobody should see the remake and see the original instead. I just can't believe the double standard sometimes. You're purposely denying yourself a good film/book in favor of the American remake? Who knew this site was for film fans...
-
Broken down simply, a score is music specifically composed to accompany a film, usually classical or electronic in nature, designed to be woven into the atmospheric backdrop of the film or to be utilized thematically, as if to represent certain characters or situations (a la Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf or Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen). A soundtrack, by comparison, is a collection of music, usually songs by several artists, that may or may not have been used in the film, but are generally released to support the “spirit” of the movie. From a simple google search. Source examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/soundtracks-in-national/soundtracks-101-what-is-the-difference-between-a-soundtrack-and-a-score Yeah, Trent Reznor may know a thing or two about music. I'm not sure if you are doing this to razz some people but if you are, you're just a tool. Yeah, so punch yourself in the d*ck.

I am still listening to the Natural Born Killers soundtrack because it's fooking awesome.

Tron Legacy does have LOTS Of pieces that are subtle and underscore scenes, unfortunately, most of these were left off of the released score. I don't even like Daft Punk, but i love the score to Legacy, and the fact that it didnt even get a nomination when many other unworthy ones did just to make up the numbers shows how much the academy members are up their own arse. A score doesnt have to be subtle, it doesnt have to be loud, it has to suit the movie, as well as be well composed and IMO should have a theme running throughout that's consistent. Does Social Network have these? yes, was it oscar nomination material? yes, was it the best of all the scores made that year INCLUDING Tron Legacy? Hell no.
-

I honestly can't understand why people think this is goodmusic
by starlesswinter7
It's one long sound effect. I know people think Reznor is some music god, but I think this is slap in the face to composers like John Williams or Howard Shore who write complex melodies with real heart and emotion. This is just some drab texture with no narrative, no emotion, nothing. It's generic mood music.

Loud angry words from 'melgibsoncalledmethenword'. Methinks you need to relax a bit, punch a rock, and really think about what you're writing. Reznor's knowledge of music seems quite profound. And fact of the day for you - a 'score' can indeed be one or 2 people locked away in a studio, gently playing away at a synthesiser with accompanying electronic sounds. If it enhances the dramatic tension then it's a score.

Yet I haven't heard anything by TRENT the composer that was compelling, I really think they only reason he won the OSCAR last year was because the OSCARS wanted to be hip. Lets give it to a ROCK STAR this year, because in all honesty even though I love The Social Network and the score does work with the film, the OSCAR should have went to Hans Zimmer for INCEPTION. The social networks score and by what I've hear from this so far sound like Hans Zimmer out-takes left on the cutting room floor!
-
and these reznor bashers are laughable. try listening to the piece before you bash it... there's a lot more stuff going on there than one fucking note. sheesh.
-
Yeah there's more than one note of music going on, because Atticus Ross is there taking the noise REZNOR makes and is turning it into barely listenable music.
-
Trent you are the master !
-
It's not "a single note", but it's the same exact sound and instrumentation for 7 minutes, with no variation in any musical component. I don't care who composed this - Beethoven could have composed it, and it would still be uninteresting. Maybe if this was a texture incorporated into something more expansive and EMOTIVE, it would be interested. Music has to tell a story for me to respond to it, and this mood-setter stuff doesn't do anything for me.
-
Recommend this to anyone who loves the Reznor and Ross sound, particularly 'The Social Network' collaboration. Brilliant!!

Ghosts" was Trent's test bed for scores. Atticus rocked it with "Eli.
by Pixelsmack
"Ghosts" was a free download, might still be. Worth checking out. As much as I like this duo, you can definitely hear Atticus's influence in the tracks, I really hope Atticus does some more scores on his own. I loved his work in "The Book of Eli" and want more!
-
it's kinda good but it tries way too hard to be edgy and smart. fingers crossed for fincher's take on the material.
-
had some music in the background that ended up being more fleshed out by the time the score and film hit? yea, exactly. it was a bunch of processed strings vibrating... and only weeks later did we actually hear an added piano and other stuff thrown in over it. just wait until you hear more than just a teaser. because that's what this is. a teaser. and "same exact sound" my ass. get some headphones or a better speaker set up because you're spending too much time hearing and not enough time listening.
-
I love NIN and everything that REZNOR has every put out under that name alright, I am a fan, I have the right to call bullshit when I see it. TRENT winning the OSCAR was bullshit and his film score for the social network is highly overrated. You people on here talk about him like he has been scoring music for films for the past twenty years and that his experience in NIN should also count toward that, but its utter bullshit. This score so far sounds lame and he uses the same techniques Hans has been doing now for over a decade, Hans Zimmer was the one who really placed electric music into film score, but REZNOR does it and everyone thinks its something new because a bigger name is behind it. I'm not saying REZNOR wont eventually make that great film score or become a great composer of film, but he has to earn the fucking right, which takes years upon years of experience. Rock music does not count as experience since in all reality they are totally two different forms of music, as example take Opera and a Broadway musical, or countless other examples! Like I said I really don't get on here to bash someone and this is really the first time I'm doing despite actually liking the person I am bashing! REZNOR is at the bottom of the list of living composers today, maybe, and that's a big maybe, he could one day crack the top ten. Yet I highly doubt it! Dam this has got me heated, Alexandre Desplat should of had an OSCAR eight movies ago, yet like I stated before REZNOR got one out of politics! See through the bullshit and learn when you are listing to great music from composers on the screen and when you are listing to bullshit! Trent please come out with another NIN album and stop composing music for film, it is so far beneath you and out of place! And anyone who disagrees with this rant FUCK OFF, because your not a true fan of REZNOR, cause if you were you would call him on his bullshit!
-
But yes, Tron and Inception were tops for me. Then again, SN didn't need a score like that. It woulda been out of place. It had the perfect score for that movie. Can't wait for this, but only because of Fincher. I loved the Swedish version "Men Who Hate Women," and there was so much about it that was refreshingly European that - at least - I know Fincher's won't replace it. But there is room for two different visions of the material, and Zodiac is an absolute fucking masterpiece, and Fincher is on a role, so yeah. Anyways, when's he doing 20000 Leagues?

No wonder Hollywood feels like they can put any shit out there. The first films based on the books just finished up less than what 2 years ago and already this crap? Sad.
-
I've read the books, have yet to watch the original Swedish films though. I'm kind of afraid any of the films I watch will ruin my vision of the book, not necessarily cuz their bad films, but because of the images I've burned into my brain through reading. Only time will tell though, still excited.
-
The anger. The pain. The frustration. It's ok, 'spaghettiwall', it actually was a great film score. And a great film. We'll be sure to vote in favour for you. All the best.
-
I don't like remakes, but I'm excited about this movie because the original flick just...I don't know, it was good but not great. Could've been so much better, I always felt that something was missing. I trust Fincher on this.
-
He's sucked so many dicks, that even GLAAD called him a faggot.
-
Felt bit too flat, was he trying for a dark menacing tone? if so he never quite hits it. Tron and Hanna (ok i admit it even Sucker Punch) will probably gets more playtime than the Social network. I'd imagine Lisabeth to be a bit more of a chaotic dark tone, with Mikael to have a more classical harder tone in the scores. Not sure if I'll buy this soundtrack at full cost, might wait and see how the rest of the soundtrack/score fits with the visuals.
-
and in my opinion, it was his partner Atticus Ross that started to experiment with a different type of score. This was evident in "The Book of Eli". People are used to themes in musical scores and that's why they are upset with the audio sample above and perhaps even "The Social Network" score. A musical theme should not be necessary in a film as long as the music compliments the story, message and vision of the film. Don't get me wrong, I believe Hans Zimmer was snubbed more than a few times for the Oscar but Trent's "Social Network" worked better. Just because one score sounds more 'Epic' doesn't mean it was the best suited for the film. Regarding the "Tron Legacy" score, I agree with most of you. It should have been nominated. The Oscars aren't perfect but they at least realized that Tron Legacy was far from a perfect film by not nominating it at all. I bet the music above is setting the tone of the film or reinforcing it. I've seen the original films, and there's only a slight theme heard in them. Again, you have to consider what the film is (action, drama, comedy, etc.) and then find what works best for building tension, a tone, etc. Most drama/mystery thrillers do not have a theme by the way.
-
The original movie was mediocre. I didn't read the book, but even if it was written very well, the plot is so predictable and full of cliché that in no way you can make a good movie out of it. Also, the fact that there are 2 sequels, and that they are bad and worse, I don't think Reznor will be enough to save this useless re-shooting.

What happened to a real movie scoring?
-
...Does not mean its the best score for a film. The film and score have to be on the same page and in my opinion the score for TRON works better without the film. It adds a cool factor and nothing more. Reznor's score creates so much tone and mood that matches the film. He truly took a new twist on a movie score. That is why he won an Oscar and even if he didn't, who gives an F about the Oscars? I mean a Hallmark movie won best picture.

yeah cause im sure no one flipped a lid when they composed Midnight Cowboy and Planet of the Apes..which sound vastly different (at the time) to what they were accustomed to composing. Good composers write to fit the film and that is what they did, and that is what Reznor and Ross did. People complain about the Social Network score yet laud Zimmer, who is notorious for writing homogenous scores..where they could be for a film about a pirate, a batman, any Michael Bay film. Obviously Fincher is going for an ambient sound for the film. He did it with Seven, but i guess that score gets a pass because it was by a written by a guy who used to be the musical director for SNL.
-
...it's very much 'fincher-esque' material. What, you'd want a Williams score for this? Williams is huge and epic and sweeping while Reznor is far more ambient, dark, layered and subtle. I think you'll see it works. Oh, and Tron: Legacy sucked ass with AND without Daft Punk. The score did nothing to polish that turd.

A very sad testament to society today. And don't get me started on the subject of remakes of perfectly good foreign films simply because of the perception that North Americans are too lazy or stupid to read subtitles.
-
I believe the artist is a perfect fit for the tone of the movie. I really couldn't see a John Williams type scoring this kind of production.
-
Ever since I read Tarzan Of The Apes when I was round 13 and learned just how badly movie makers can mistreat their source material I have made it a point, when a movie is being made of a book I've been meaning to read, to read the book before I see the movie. I might read the book before the movie comes out or wait to see the movie on video after I've had the chance to read the book. Either way, I want to read what THE AUTHOR had in mind before I see some else's (usually) adaptation.

Sounds like Reznor fell asleep with his face on the keyboard
by Legolars
Love how people describe this as fitting, moody, broody and atmospheric and are dissing Williams, Goldsmith and Barry as sentimental hacks. Goldsmith was arguably the king of mood. Listen to Alien or Basic Instinct. But unlike Reznor he (a)actually uses a fucking orchestra which I for one prefer and (b) could compose a theme or two and (c) create a score you'd want to listen to afterwards. Sure, to each his or her own, but I think this homogenous atonal bullshit has been done to death this past decade and is the very definition of unsubtle and OTT. I should think the dark subject matter of the story and the whole look of the movie convey that this will be moody and atmospheric. Maybe the score should enhance the visuals in a different way in stead of this bland garbage.
-
Soundtrack music is always tough to piqionhole without knowing where it fits in a movie. Soundtrack music is supposed to *support* the movie and specific scenes, evoking without distracting. The music should be a part, not the whole of a film. For all we know, this could be in some long, drawn out scene featuring pensive actors traveling without dialog on a car ride through snow-swept landscape. Would I buy the soundtrack for this movie if it's filled 100% with this sort of music - maybe, as I like the old Brian Eno type ambient music to relax and even put me to sleep. But the soundtrack music I really enjoy has a lot more true musical craft, energy, warmth and frankly, power behind it and does stand on it's own as a listening experience as well as fulfilling the role I describe above. Bernard Herrman, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Ikira Ifukube, Ennio Morricone, Barry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer and others of similar ilk fall into this catagory. I can listen to Herrmann's score for "Jason And The Argonauts" straight through time and time again and get the same pleasure as listening to Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffiti" ..... or Nine Inch Nail's "The Downward Spiral." (yes, I like Reznor's work too)
-
For not first experiencing the original material. I think it deserves to be recognized for it's powerful accomplishment. Both the books and the Swedish movie trilogy are a "tour de force" in their respective mediums. The films did an outstanding job of taking the most essential peices of the literary work's massively detailed storytelling and weaving them into an 190 proof cinematic gut-punch! The screen writers did an excellent job of translating the literary complex character's essences and the actors brought them to life perfectly. Noomi Rapace's Lisbeth Salander is unforgettable. That said; I do look forward to seeing what handling Fincher & Co. have with the story and characters. I just wish the original foreign films had gotten more credit and wider-spread exposure in America.
