Already? Sony Sets Up THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 for 2014!

Nordling here.

They haven't finished filming the first one yet, but Sony seems so sure that Marc Webb's reboot will be so successful that they've already set up the sequel to be released on May 2, 2014.  Either they're really pleased with the shooting so far, they've read James Vanderbilt's follow-up script and squeed with delight, or they're trying really hard to kick Marvel Studios around a bit with their own character.  Or all three.

I'm confident in Andrew Garfield's take on the character (read Quint's interview here) so I'm sure he's game for another go-round.  A quick sequel turnaround's not unprecedented for this franchise either - SPIDER-MAN 2 came out 2 years later.  I'll chalk this up to Sony's confidence in the new film.  Either way, Spidey fans should be elated.

Nordling, out.

Was never much of a fan of the Raimi series...

    by WeylandYutani

of films. A lot of miscast actors IMO and tonally a lot of the humour and drama seemed off to me. Somehow, this seems more in line with the Marvel SM comics I grew up with. I just wish this was not a reboot so soon after the Raimi films. I think the casting is far better this time and Webb showed that he knows how to work with actors with (500) Days of Summer. I am pretty lukewarm about the outfit... not horrible, but the blue hands and silver feet seem off. Still high hopes for this.

Does anyone know when the marvel/sony/spiderman deal is up?

    by Mysterious_Volvo

iv been thinking about it recently. they cant have made a deal that goes on indefinitely. i recally back when the deal was made they said the studio had a limited period during which they had to put a movie into production and that was like 5 years, like the Fox deal, and i cant remember wether the total deal lasted 25 years or what. anyone know?

    by irc-Hollywood

Sony will never stop making Spider-Man films, until they've run the character into the ground, so, in exactly 3 more years.

  • I never can see pages that have a lot of posts like the the page with pics of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle or Henry Cavill as Superman; whenever I click on the headline on the home page I get sent to the article, but, the screen is frozen, then after after some time I get a half-second "Whoops!" AOL error page, then get sent back to the home page. I've emailed people on this site countless times pointing this out, but have not gotten any response.

    Poor Spidey

    by D

You have the greediest, penny pinching studio ever.

  • The Sony/Spidey deal is never really up as long as they keep making films, and they don't have to rush quite that much to meet the demands of the contracts. However, there has been a lot of speculation that Sony (the parent company) may be selling off their entertainment divisions in this next year. They've been hit hard by the downturn in the economy (people arent' buying pricey electronics) and their manufacturing has taken a major blow thanks to the earthquakes and devastation in Japan earlier this year. Sony Pictures could be sold off without majorly affecting their core electronics businesses, and doing so could bring in some much needed revenue to see them through these tough times. No idea how such a sale might go, mind you... whether they'd look to find another studio to swallow Sony Pictures wholesale or whether they'd sell off assets one-by-one. However, scheduling a Spidey sequel, even before the first film is finished, might just make it look like they have more concrete value. Of course, if they do sell, it'll be interesting to see if Disney/Marvel can get the Spidey film rights back.

    $400 million

    by rahtard

Spider-man is the biggest comic franchise. Spider-man was the only film in history to go head to head against a Star Wars film and beat it at the box office. Spider-man 3 was poorly reviewed and still brought in $336 million. This film should bring in at least that with inflated ticket prices, then add in 3D tickets, $400 million. Trailer buzz has it looking promising. The costume sucks, but its a lot better than Superman's.

chewtoy has the more accurate theory.

    by Orbots Commander

A variation of the issues happening at Sony appeared in stories a couple of weeks ago in both The Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal. Yes, Sony, the parent company, is looking to unload itself of the movie and music studios, including Columbia Pictures. They're making decisions now that will raise the value of the entertainment properties in potential buyers' eyes. I'm sure that there's also a clause, that if the studio ever goes kaput, or sells off assets, that the film rights to Spidey revert to Marvel. But yeah, originally, during the '90's when Marvel was in dire financial straits, they sold the film rights to Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four and others, in perpetuity (that means forever)...unless a certain number of years go by without a property becoming a film. Then, again, the rights revert to Marvel.

A bigger problem at Sony is...

    by Orbots Commander

...their bread and butter---their consumer electronics, including their Bravia TV lines----aren't selling well. Part of it is due to the current global malaise/recession and high unemployment. Part of it is that HDTVs are commodity items that lose their value quickly, and partly because the Korean firms, Samsung and LG, have outmaneuvered Sony in the market. Their smart phone lines, now running Android, are also not selling well. Add in the embarrassment of losing the 'coolness' of consumer gadget technology to Apple, and yes, Sony is facing some big challenges.

Why are all big movies made with one eye on the follow up or a frickin trilogy, it totally dilutes everything, every character, every action, everything is held back so as not to upstage the next film. It's like the writers go "don't put that in, we wont be able to top it in part 2, lets save it and squeeze it into part 3 even though we got to many villians, erm what if we make him dance?" Disney will buy the film rights to Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.

    by frankenberry

I feel certain Disney will eventually have to buy the film rights to characters like Spider-Man, X-Men etc. If Sony is willing to make a sequel to Ghost Rider, it's safe to assume they'll continue making Spider-Man films, even if it comes down each film having a $50 million budget and grossing $100 million. As for X-Men, Fox has an even sweeter deal: the studio could make a low-budget film featuring obscure X-Men and still retain the film rights to every single X-Men character.

    Black Spidey?

    by Chris Moody

That new stupid hybrid black/hispanic Ultimate Spiderman -- the kid who will replace a murdered Peter Parker -- is just the product of political correctness gone horribly awry. Next thing? He is probably GAY! Go figure. If Marvel wanted to do something good for the African American or Hispanic community, it should have created a top-of-the-line series featuring a black hero...and a top-of-the-line series featuring a Hispanic hero. It is offensive when Affirmative Action hits even characters in comic books. It reeks of the notion from Liberals that minorities can't succeed with their assistance (and the "assistance" from funding taken from hardworking taxpayers).

  • Aug. 5, 2011, 5:08 p.m. CST

    Spiderman/Superman/Catwoman costume...

by Chris Moody textured like it is in order for it to be form fitting in every pose. I just spoke to a clothing designer about it, and that is the consensus. Christopher Reeve's costume had "folding" issues that looked bad on camera...and there were several retakes based solely upon costume malfunctions. Makes sense.

i think the big question here

    by mick vance

is why the fuck emma stone was cast as gwen stacey? i don't care if she's a natural blonde (every fucking young starlet is) but she has become the most iconic red-head of her generation thus far. unless they do something where gwen dies, but stone plays mary jane, too, in order to help a grieving peter parker. yeah, fuck all this shit. once the current crop of superhero movies are completed, they should do a 1602 movie for the hell of it and then stop all the mainstream comic movies for a decade or so. let batman lead the charge in 2019 and then wrap em all up again around 2025. give every generation of kids their own movies without just having this perpetual loop of reboot, remake, and reimagining. in conclusion, put in some hardcore fucking scenes and get the fuck out...

    by SchwarzenGollum

Too much Spider-Man. Just...too much. He's not even that interesting anymore. You know what would be a challenge for a film maker? Make a major comic book movie focusing MAINLY on the villain (e.g. a Doctor Doom, Kingpin, or Sabertooth movie) and make us relate to HIM rather than the hero. They tapped a bit on that with "X-Men: First Class" and it worked really well. It was a challenge, and something film makers need to do more of. Show these "heroes" as a nuisance to our new main characters (i.e. the villain).

Basically making out that "OMFG, our Spider-man movie is teh awesomz!!!" and in effect hyping their own product. And of course they'd want to get a sequel off the ground ASAP as these movies will get more expensive if they're hits. Sigh, I still say they should have ignored part 3 and restarted, with a new cast, right from the end of Part 2. Like I said, open the move with M.J. appearing at Peter's room, in her wedding dress, they kiss, he goes jumping out of the window, BANG, Titles Credits and take the story wherever they want. It would have just made more sense to build upon the last GOOD SM movie instead of this rebooted shit. I would have FUCKING KILLED to have seen Edgar Wright do a Spider-man movie that took place after the events of part 2. That would have FUCKING ROCKED!!!

  • ...I'm gonna give my two cents about the MAN OF STEEL and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES pics right here in this TalkBack for the sequel to the BATMAN BEGINS ripoff version of SPIDER-MAN, which will probably be a ripoff of THE DARK KNIGHT... MAN OF STEEL pic: LOL, Synder can't even make a publicity photo NOT look like cgi... The costume's too dark and his hair is too big, but, I suppose people think that is what makes him "badass". THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Selina Kyle pic: WTF IS SHE DOING ON THE BATPOD? Oh, I am scared my friends. I am scared they have made Catwoman into a "robin" character. I am scared they have replaced Bruce/Batman with Selina/Catwoman as the "Dark Knight". I'm scared they're killing off Bruce, and Selina is taking over. I'm scared Batman won't even be able to fight off ANNE HATHAWAY. I'm scared they're turning this into SHERLOCK HOLMES. I'm scared that even though Bruce was able to defeat so many other male villains superior to the Catwoman (including the Joker), he'll automatically have trouble with her, not because she's his equal, but just because she's a woman, and, like can't beat women in anything. Nolan was really clever in revealing pics for THE DARK KNIGHT: The first pic of the Joker was him with his hands up facing the camera with his clown mask on (not including the close up one from the hand held camera he used in the scene with the faux Batman). These official photos of Bane and Selina aren't as clever or complex.

Studios don't do things like this because they're "happy" and "confident". You don't muddy the waters of marketing a new, revised product because you're "happy" or "confident". You only take the focus off of your shiny new product because you feel like you have no choice. Sony's doing this for two reasons: 1) To create a sense of "event" around a film that has so far utterly failed to create a sense of event even on par with Spider-Man 3. Sure, it's getting attention, but Sony lived thru Raimi's films - they know the difference in attention. This new film isn't special like those were. So by already announcing a sequel, the first film isn't just a puny solitary film - it's the first part of a "saga", and we're already working on part 2! So don't miss part 1! And tell your friends! 2) Nebulous financial reasons which probably involve beating back any effort by Marvel to reclaim their star, any question by investors that Sony doesn't have what it takes anymore, or any question by potential future buyers of the film studio that Sony isn't "going places" with exciting new product ahead! Or yeah, maybe they're just so happy with the unfinished film and some script. Yeah, that's it. Sheesh.

  • I mean, they're even afraid to have a web pattern on the thing. It's like one of those cheap Chinese knockoff toys where you can tell the bootleggers missed the basic idea of what they were copying. The pose is golden, pure Spidey. It's an insult to wrap it in that muddled joke of a costume, though.

claiming the best release date of 2014 ASAP = genius move

    by Nerd Rage

Forget your conspiracy theories about this being a marketing ploy. This is just a smart move...If ASM fails the can just drop the release date and nobody would care, but if the movie succeeds they have the perfect release date for 2014. Durrr!

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 2:09 a.m. CST

Seems Like this Spidey might be a bit ADHD

    by dumbpeoplesuck

The suit looks like an overly-busy logo. The former nice, straight lines going down the arms suddenly CURVE in and start zig-zagging like Parker just couldn't handle that straight line anymore. And then there's the boots! Like patchwork spidey boots! Were those cheaper to make than regular spidey boots?

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 2:35 a.m. CST

    God look at that costume

It looks like total, utter shit. I will be so happy when they pull the plug on this series after everyone shits on this upcoming shitfest.

    The Real Costume

by Eli_Cash The absence of a belt line breaking the continuity of the upper and lower body yeilds a nude look. Add to that the fact that the red upper body pattern terminates at his crotch, and the racing stripes on his legs look like straps for garter belts, and you have a weirdly sexualized spiderman suit. Then youv'e got the black crotch looking like he pissed himself. And compared to the original design it just looks half-assed. Like they couldn't bother to connect the belt line at the front. Like they didn't know how to terminate the chest line without the belt so they said, "fuck it, just paint it black". They thought he needed some bling, so they just added little silver slippers. The official release photos are strategically posed in such a way that it minimizes the differences. It's gonna look so much worse in the final film, unless they manage to not show it by hiding him in the shadows, or having him crouch, or only show head shots. So basically the one element necessary for a good spiderman flic, showing spiderman in action, is completely ruined just because the suit is so awful. Either you will see how bad the suit is and it will distract from the action, or they'll obscure it thus making the action incomprehensible. There is no way this can be a good spiderman movie, just from the costume alone.

We all know what this really means

    by catlettuce4

Just like announcing Green Lantern 2 while the first was struggling to find an audience in theaters, this Spidey announcement is a "vote of confidence" meant to enforce the idea that we really should get behind the first one and go see it. They know the reaction has been very mixed so far and want to try and make it look like everything is A-OK. Like when WB announced a sequel to Superman Returns and Brandon Routh kept saying he and Singer were waiting for info on it but WB was dragging their feet...

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 4:53 a.m. CST

    eli_cash, you just NAILED it

    by catlettuce4

The suit is where it begins and ends for this. The previous films, whatever you think of them,. got the suit right, and it looked like a comic come to life when Spidey was doing things onscreen. Why mess with that? They know the suit is awful but it's too late to change it. They know many of us HATE it and will avoid the film because of something so "trivial." I really wonder why someone would take an established character then totally change it and expect people won't care....

This reboot should be so lucky...

by buggerbugger make it to a shitty third installment featuring a dancing Peter Parker and a fucktarded retcon of Uncle Ben's murder. Fucking idiots should have just done a fourth movie, recasting roles if necessary, and allowed Spidey to get past his origin, leave college and grow up a little. But you don't have the guts to do that, do you, Hollywood?

    This Should Happen

    by flax

Disney should acquire the rights to the property from Sony. Then they should ignore this reboot and make Spider-Man 4. Bring back Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire if they're willing. Have Spider-Man make a cameo appearance in one of the Avengers sequels.

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 8:12 a.m. CST

now we know spiderman won't die in this one... WHAT A SPOILER! I thought he was going to be killed off and they would throw a party

  • Of course that was after the insane box office they made that summer but still. If Sony wants to take the gamble on this let them.

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 11:45 a.m. CST

You are an idiot and probably white as fuck. Spider-Man is the perfect superhero to play around with gender / ethnicity / race roles. Are you black, hispanic, or in between? If so, I understand your self-hatred; I too hate my Rican genes. If not, then shut the fuck up and give yourself a buckshot shampoo. Your Aryan master race had its time. The real world, the one that I live in, has all kinds of different people in it.

I hope the new Spider-Man is gay. Because that would be even more realistic. I don't know what kind of inbred fucking WASP fantasy world you live in, but gay people are real people too, you fucking asshole, clownshoes waste of carbon.

  • The costume just plain sucks and makes no sense. I'm hoping the webshooters have something more to do with directing his organic webbing and not producing the webbing. The trailer showed him pulling something like a web out of the back of his neck, so I'm hoping that means he'll have organic webbing and the shooters just help to direct the flow. </p> <p> The costume, however, is too thick around the hands and feet. Spiderman would have to have VERY thin fabric over those areas (or no fabric at all) so that he could cling to walls. So I hate right off the bat that they're not using any sort of internal logic for the movie. It's a bad sign. Couple that with the Lizard as the main focus and I'm just really left cold at the whole thing.

  • Aug. 6, 2011, 12:58 p.m. CST

I just love how superman's new costume is

    by UltraTron

the BEST superman's costume has ever looked anywhere. Ever. In fact I would kill to have it at Halloween and so would you. But I don't love how seeing it next to spiderman's new costume. Because it really makes spiderman look like a little insect that superman would crush.

It's more voodoo marketing, saying not only is our first film great (please believe us, don't listen to the trailer), but it's so great that the as-yet-unmade sequel will also be great enough to merit a really great release date! So get on board the Spider-Man train now, it's going places! Really, it is! Please, we need the money!
