Omega Prime with a tiny peak at TITAN AE

Published at:  Jan 23, 2000 5:22:27 AM CST

Well folks, Has Don Bluth managed to make a really cool Sci-Fi animated film? Ya know.. I hope so. I really don't want to see any problems for Fox Animation, and I like Don Bluth... Can't help it really, ol THE SECRET OF NIMH stole my heart years ago and ever since... I've given Bluth breaks in watching his films when I could tell that the financing wasn't there... cause usually the ambition was. I mean... damn.. I loved DRAGON'S LAIR and SPACE ACE... and always wanted a feature version of both. Hopefully, this'll be a big hit for Fox. I hope. Also... Kali willing, we should have many more reviews of this film... ahem...

"Titan A. E." is the most enjoyable space opera since the original "Star
Wars" trilogy. Critical acclaim and commercial success should accompany the
film in its summer debut. Kudos to director Don Bluth and producing partner
Gary Goldman for creating an animated film with a story that could of worked
just as well were it live action.

Although the film is often predictable and cliched, it never lacks
action/adventure, suspense, drama, comedy, or romance. The current running
time is about 1 hour 45 minutes; and in my opinion could easily attain a PG
rating or higher. Finally, those who were dissapointed with "The Phantom
Menace" may be pleasantly suprised with "Titan A. E.".

Omega Prime out.

    by lazarus long

I remember the extended trailer a few months ago, and although there were a few cheesy lines, it looked like a good piece of work. Is it possible that an animated science fiction is more likely to succeed than a non-brand name sci-fi live action film? Stuff like Event Horizon, Supernova, etc. seem like good premises, but most people write off Sci-fi that doesn't come from well-known source material. Maybe the success of Titan: AE will open the door for more serious space operas...but why did they have to name the fucking ship after Titanic? Jeez...

    Changed my mind ...

    by azmodel

I wasn't interested in this at all when I saw the teaser trailer with just te shot of Earth exploding, but once I saw the full version and realized it was animation AND 3D computer FX, it really began to look cool ... something along the lines of Heavy Metal, but toned down so kids can enjoy it too. I can't wait for this film.

    le animation de le film.

    by battleflag

I recently saw the (longer)trailer for this movie, and while it looked surprising not bad (compared to the short version!), I still can't stand the sluggish overdone look to the animation. Every motion is way too smooth, it's unatural! We need speed! The director doesn't seem to get how much more vivid the medium will allow the action to be. I mean look at it and tell me it doesn't look too slow! Argh, I want my Akira. That was a cartoon with like a million cells per second and it didn't look sluggish because the director realized the extent to which he could push POV and kinetics. When I look at this I don't see anything dynamic, just stufff going on within the frame. Oh fucking well. I'll wait for Final Fantasy. If the cut scenes from FF8 are any indication (and not to mention the depth of story and characters) it should kick the fuck out of anything cartoon/SF. Fuck, now I've gotten myself mad.

Rest assured, T.A.E. will suck donkey nuts

    by nagual

Don Bluth hasn't done a decent film since "An American Tail," and even that one was debatable. This one looks visually terrible, sub-moronic in the story department and yet another lame Fox attempt to make a dent in the animation world. "Anastasia" was a big raspberry and so shall this be. You heard it here first.

Is this a joke? This "review" reads like a press release.

    by brendan3

Harry, do you know this guy? If so, forgive what I'm about to say. This guy sounds like a studio plant. His "review" offers nothing about the plot or the animation. It reads like those rave blurbs written by tiny town newspapers that always accompany print ads for terrible movies. ("If you loved Star Wars, you'll love TITAN AE! Fun for the whole family! Best of the Year" -Joe Smith Hopkinsville Weekly Reader) C'mon, it would have been a review if there was actually something about the film in it, instead of just unexplained praise. Why is it the "Best space opera since Star Wars" A little reviewing in this review would have been nice.

    BUBBLE GUM ANIMATION

I'm just tired of american BUBBLE GUM MADE characters in Disney/Fox/Warner animated movies. I agree with Battleflag (btw your French is a nightmare) go to see TOTORO or MONONOKE! That's Great animation! That's Art!

    by cassius the evil

I think I'll wait to see it on HBO, thanks. In the meantime, I'm gonna hunt around Amazon.com for Neon Genesis Evangelion tapes (I pity anyone who has to make a post-Eva animated feature; I mean, it's like trying to stop a tank by putting a smaller, much more brittle tank directly in the path of its treads...).

    by prankster

...Geez, you guys are so prejudgemental. So it's Don Bluth. It's also being written by Ben Edlund, of THE TICK fame--that's a large point in its' favour. And it's got a *great* cast, and isn't a musical, and is rated PG...there's a lot of "pros" to go along with the "cons". Not that it still couldn't suck, but at least give it a chance...

    Harry, you're awesome!!

    by godai-kun

A Space Ace movie MUST be made! Finally, someone besides me realizes its potential! Harry, with your clout in Hollywood and my uh..,um.. superpowers (yeah, that's the ticket), we can make this movie a reality. I just know it! Space Ace is the best example of sci-fi animation IMO. The action is fast paced, and it's goofy without being cutesy-poo. It doesn't need the overblown CGI effects that Titan AE seems to have. Damn, I miss the old Don Bluth! Sigh, I guess I'll just have to keep playing my copy of Space Ace on DVD, as I await the verdict on Titan.... As for the Evangelion thing, I really WANT to like it, but it is rather boring. Everyone tells me it gets better as it goes along, but I'm at episode 8 and not too thrilled. When does it pick up? And besides, everyone knows the best anime is Ranma 1/2. :)

    An analysis of Don Bluth

    by stephen dedalus

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Don Bluth, he is an animator who broke away from Disney in the late seventies/early eighties when the studio was producing their weakest films. He formed his own studio, which has not done very well. I liked AN AMERICAN TALE, but other than that, I can't say that I've really found any great appreciation in Don Bluth's animated movies. THE SECRET OF NIMH just did not work, mostly because it seemed like a poor, ultra-bleak, imcomprehensible (at least for its audience) rip-off of the far superior Disney film THE RESCUERS. THE LAND BEFORE TIME was a bland and megar kiddie film at best, and inspired a pointless straight-to-video series that recently concluded with THE LAND BEFORE TIME MLXVII: THE METEOR FINALLY KILLS THEM. And then there were the atomic bombs: THUMBELLINA, RODNEY DOG-ERFIELD (with Rodney Dangerfield doing the voice of a dog), and ROCK-A-DOODLE. When Disney made their comeback in the early ninties, they kicked the crap out of Bluth at the box office, and practically brought an end to his studio. If TITAN AE is a big success, then Bluth could have much to crow about...

    Have you seen Blue Planet?

    by dethmunk

Hmmm. I've seen trailers for Titan A.E. and Blue Planet. While Titan looked good CGI wise as soon as the animation kicked in it looked crap! If the CG had been made to look like the animation ala Disney cartoons then yes it could be good. On the other hand Blue Planet looks ace. It's all CGI including the characters like Toy Story, but more kick ass. It looks the more impressive of the two. I loved the dig at Toy Story on the front of Blue Planet trailer, it was ace... :)

I agree with the bloke who said the guy was a studio plant

    by mr logic

I mean come on its so obvious, the style of writing gives away the secret agenda of this so called ``scooper''
This film will suck dead dingos dongas!. I saw the trailer and IT WAS SHITE!!! Like some guy above said, some of the worst CG animation ever seen and this is a FEATURE FILM? The shot of earth blowing up was horrendus, looked like the tutorials that come with programs like Lightwave and 3D studio max. Ad to that the lackluster, generic ship and alien design and you can bet that if you were ``dissapointed by the phantom menace'' you will be slitting your wrists over Titan AE!
    FOR THE UNCONVERTED
If crap like Titan AE and disney is all you know animation wise then I invit you to sample the wonderful delights of Anime. This is the stuff Micheal Eisner dosent want you to know about because he knows once you get a taste you will never come back. Go and rent Akira, Ghost in the shell, Ninja Scroll and Wings of Honamisse and you will turn your back on Disney for ever!

    by darth siskel

Dupont, I don't know what you're watching but Dragon's Lair & Space Ace were very well animated. They hold up just fine today.
Maybe you're mistaking the cuts for choppy animation. The games have horrible gameplay, but slicker animation than alot of the trash coming out of Disney's ass.

    Thumbelina

    by mulchpuppy

Has anyone else heard the rumor about how WB, after having some horrid results from test screening "Thumbelina," recut the film with a Disney logo at the beginning and noted the test scores rocketing up from "pisspoor" to "excellent?" I read about it in some overly trite expose style book about how evil Disney is. Fairly lame book anyway.

What's with the character design? (and other meanderings)

    by tneill

Is this a Bluth 'house style'? Is the hero in every one of their films going to have a Michael York nose-bump from now on? I also noticed the awfull 3d cgi. Yuck. Every time is see a stinker like this one getting made, I fear for serious animation in America. No single film will ruin it for us, just as an Iron Giant or Prince of Egypt won't suddenly open everyones eyes, but as soon as something great breaks into the open, an avalanche of cheap, derivative dreck is sure to follow. And here it is. I hope that it will at least have SOME saving graces, cuz I'm gonna go see it anyway. You Want Good Animation? Rent 'Vision of Escaflowne'. The whole damn series. It's almost perfect.

A DuP slightly revises "Space Ace" DVD appraisal...

    by alexandra dupont

It was kind to the CHARACTER animation, which Bluth has always excelled at. The rest looked rather choppy, umimaginative and quickly dashed out to me. And that dialogue! And that soundtrack! Ugh and ick! I wanted to take out my hammer, anvil and stirrups with a wooden spoon.

    NIMH was totally brilliant....

    by bregalad_

.... and most of Bluth's work since has been underrated. Okay, I'm not talking about the "Troll in Central Park" crap where obviously the man was toiling under a heinous contract with no money. I mean the *real* stuff where the studio gives him enough funds with a great script! Don't forget that NIMH was a triumph of design, color palette, and storytelling. It also had one of Jerry Goldsmith's finest scores. You people need to give Bluth more credit for standing up against the Mouse House and creating his own niche of cool, stylish, and fun animated films. -- If I hear anybody say another bad thing about Anastasia I'm going to personally put my ent-ish qualities of reserve and self control aside, and come down there and whup your butt. Titan A.E. should be very cool, just wait n' see. Anything to give us a break from that saccharine Tarzan crap that Disney keeps spoon-feeding us. YOU GO DON!!

MGM's horrible DVD release of NIMH

    by bregalad_

Oh yeah, one small complaint: MGM HOW COULD YOU??? Your DVD release of "Secret of NIMH" is Pan n' Scan??!! That totally sucks dog-water! Why the hell couldn't you give us anamorphic widescreen? In all that vast library of films you have, you can't find a decent negative to create a new print? Please recall all those horrible DVD's and give us Anamorphic Widescreen! A treasure like NIMH deserves it. We implore you!

    by sith lord jesus

. . .one of the worst I've ever seen. *That's* their idea of groundbreaking CGI? Whatever. Hopefully the movie will be 1,000 times better. Remember how bad the trailer for THE IRON GIANT was? I mean, *yuck* and yet the film itself was magnificent. Oh, and Godai-kun--you're wrong, the title for best anime series is up for grabs between SAILOR MOON and the sublime glory that is SHOJO KAKUME UTENA. ;-) But for movies, AKIRA tops them all, even GHOST IN THE SHELL.

    by godai-kun

Bregalad, it's interesting that you should think Disney stuff is crap while at the same time sticking up for Anastasia, as I thought the main reason Anastasia didn't work was because it seemed like a "wanna-be Disney" movie. I'm not saying Tarzan is a better movie than Anastasia (though I personally enjoyed it more), but all the complaints I hear about Tarzan (annoying sidekicks, songs, poor villian) are apparent in Anastasia as well. You're entitled to your opinion, but it seems odd to me to blast one and praise the other.... as for Space Ace, yeah the music and dialogue are kind of cheezy, but that's what makes it work for me. It's a Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers kind of thing. Oh well, Diff'rent Strokes for different folks. Just watch out for the Gooch.
