Batman and Bane fight it out in public! SMACK! CRACK! KAPOW!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You know Christopher Nolan's shooting outside when the internet is flooded with Batman pictures. Yesterday we had some shots of Tome Hardy's Bane standing atop a Tumbler and now we have some hand-to-hand combat shots of Bane and Bats going at each other.

Here are a few shots from Getty. You can click on any of 'em to visit Getty's site and scroll through other pics from the day.

And here's a nice shot from The Daily Mail.

Much better than the coat-wearing Bane stuff from yesterday, no? And how about that updated Batpod?

Hopefully we'll actually get to SEE the fucking fights this time

    by Nasty In The Pasty

The one terrible element of the Nolan Bat-films has been the choppy editing/tight camerawork of the fight scenes (well, that and the lousy Hans Zimmer "music"), so I hope Nolan will back the goddammn camera up a little and allow some full-body choreography to be displayed.

    Use of light

    by Jack

I found the teaser trailer's use of white light interesting. Same with the poster. Then we have images in the last few days that make it appear that Bats is going to be drawn into the light in this film and that Gotham's "White Knight" is going to remain relevant to the plot. Will be interesting to see how well Batman works in daylight.

    by brobdingnag

  • July 31, 2011, 10:15 p.m. CST

    by yubnubrocks

why does Bane look SMALLER than Teh Batman. Will Nolan be doing some LOTR magic in post production? And daylight? Nah, that just doesn't work. I wonder if you'll be able to see the "O" in the background (don't forget a side of cheese for those fries!!!)

  • July 31, 2011, 10:17 p.m. CST

    I thought Bane was bigger

    by corplhicks

He's shorter than batman. That teaser few weeks ago made him look huge

  • I completely agree with you -- in a general sense. For instance, the Bourne movies marked (for me) just about the pinnacle of claustrophobic & incomprehensible combat and appear to have set the model for scores of imitators to follow. I always prefer longer and more fluid takes (Matrix, Crouching Tiger, etc). However, when it comes to Batman, I think there are complications: his suit with all its bulky armour, and the cowl and the cape in particular, makes it harder for him to move so editing is necessarily required to make Batman the agile, formidable hand-to-hand opponent he needs to be; and all that black (esp again the cape) make it harder to choreograph/capture coherent action -- all the moreso given the tendency to depict him operating at night.

JGL in the Daily Mail pic??

    by Horace Cox

Is that JGL in front of Bats & Bane in the bottom pic from the Daily Mail. Sure looks like him. As for shooting in daylight, I assume this is part of Bane's campaign to wear Batman out by keeping him busy around the clock before whipping his ass. I was going to head down to Da 'Burgh today to check out shooting but decided to be lazy instead. Fuuuuck me. Oh well, I'll be at the stadium next Saturday to watch 'em blow some shit up real good.

  • Considering that the cops are all over the Busy-Bat, and not touching Bane, I'm guessing that Bane acts as some sort of bounty hunter. Maybe he's taking a dazed bat back to the cops? Like I said, just a guess.

  • July 31, 2011, 10:22 p.m. CST

These pictures are fun, nothing more.

    by Darth_Tarantino

They give us no indication of what the hell is going on. They give us no indication of the cinematography or the style of the film. We have no clue as to where any of these scenes fit into the narrative, so they tell us nothing about the circumstances under which this fight takes place. But they're fun to look at! So anyone making judgements on the final product from looking at these pictures alone? I'd recommend you don't do that.

  • There's also the really long take at the end of THE PROTECTOR ( with Tony Jaa; to see either Bane or Batman do anything like that would be really cool.

  • July 31, 2011, 10:33 p.m. CST

    by triplesixclickqueer

Nolan's style is not reminiscent of Matt Damon's Ripley character's style not that that makes sense. Because Ripley listened to Jazz. Bird. And jazz wasn't listened to in the 60's. Watch Platoon and disagree , k. The fight looks unfinished but earnest.

  • July 31, 2011, 10:40 p.m. CST

    by bcom77

Nolan better have a good reason for it. Correct me if I'm worng but I remember during the No Man's Land series that Batman himself said he would have to step into daylight and it was a pretty big deal. That's the whole point of the bat. He appears at night. In day time he'd stand out like dogs balls and look like some douche bag in a rubber suit.

  • maybe it's b/c of Bane's physique and the mask, but I think that'd be cool if they merged the two together like Ducard and Ra's al Ghul were in begins. Lockdown thought himself as a brother in arms of Batman who would keep the crazies locked up after Bruce was done with him fyi.

Like The Dark Knight's codename was Rory's first kiss and rotj was blue harvest? I'm pretty sure everyone can recognize the bat costume if they didn't know that was Bane. And the guy in the yellow hoody has the words Gotham on it, presumably for a sports team. I saw it on a picture another tb'er posted on the last (or should I say first) Bane picture talkback.

  • July 31, 2011, 10:56 p.m. CST

    Batman vs. Bane's Mini-Me

    by BiggusDickus

Bane should be big and intimidating to Batman, that's kind of the point. A short bald bloke in a rubber mask is not going to worry a six-foot bloke in body armour. Sorry, this is just not doing it for me. Utterly unconvincing...

  • July 31, 2011, 10:57 p.m. CST

    by triplesixclickqueer

Because his face swells upon being punched by vigilantism and he's insecure. I truly don'nt know . Did the mask inject Venom? If not. May it?

  • Instead of his mask seen here it was pumped straight into his brain. Batman was familiar with an earlier version of Venom, but Bane claimed his version (this was during the knightfall arc) was something Batman was never exposed to. We don't know if venom plays apart in TDKR, but it was inevitably Bane's achilles heel, something Bane himself recognized and slowly but surely got off of so as to no longer have that weakness.

Do you want me to go fucking trash your lights?

    by kidicarus's not 2009 anymore?

  • You whiney bitches, "b-b-b-but Batman doesn't come out in the daytime. He said it himself in some 90's comic book story. My whole little fantasy world has been shattered!?!?!" Batman has no limits. And he's been out in the daylight plenty of times in plenty of great stories that were far from campy. Stop limiting the character with this sophomoric, 2 dimensional "realistic" bullshit. You seriously think criminals would suddenly not be intimidated by Batman just because they can see he's a guy in a suit. What do you think they actually think he's a giant Bat-creature and that the night actually facilitates that illusion!?! Perhaps in a "Year One"/Batman Begins setting but this late in the game it's about reputation. If anything seeing Batman in the daytime would be more intimidating since you'd figure "He must be really fucking pissed to break his regular routine and be out in the daytime". It's called imagination dipshits. Use it sometime, it's your friend.

  • July 31, 2011, 11:11 p.m. CST

    Quoting Imaginatively

    by triplesixclickqueer

  • I don't really have a problem with the mask, but for an actor that must suck that you can't express yourself or your character as much. We haven't seen snow in this Gotham yet so this is pretty coo'. Christopher Nolan already took Two-Face from schumacher, now he's taking Bane too. And while he is visibly shorter, to be honest I thought there would be a greater height difference so I'm pleasantly surprised that Bane measures up as much as he has, at least in this unofficial pics.

  • July 31, 2011, 11:13 p.m. CST

    by yubnubrocks

ah, thanks. I remember those comics, a mere 20 years ago (ugh)... Very curious to see his origin story here. I do like how Nolan tries to keep things grounded in reality (as in nothing toooooo hard to believe).

Bane in name only. He'll obviously have a breather or something to intake some drug, but trying to introduce Venom doesn't make any sense. Post production, see how thick his legs and arms are in proportion to his height? Imagine Bane 3 feet taller and it will make sense....... eventually. Fucking tools. On another note, not really sure about the bat costume. Why do we have this every fucking time?! What, a sequel means an overhaul of the suit? I wish someone can just keep things simple (next reboot) and take a hint from some of the latest animated versions. Tights, kick ass gloves and a chest plate THATS IT!!!!! This costume i hate to say looks awful.

Marion Cotillard is the best looking woman that he's cast out of all of his movies (until we see Anne Hathaway in TDKR) and I think that was more on the part of DiCaprio than anything. Carrie Anne Moss (Memento) is okay but kinda butch. Hillary Swank (Insomnia) is a fucking ugly skank. Katie Holmes looks borderline retarded and Maggie Gyllenhaal ain't no great beauty. Even in Inception he STILL had to cast that disgusting little dyke troll Ellen Page. Or does Nolan's wife force him to cast these women because she feels threatened?

Bane too small, Batman in sunlight etc etc etc

    by cushing1967

These are shots taken with either a mobile phone or a digital camera and of course are not representative of anything other than what was happening at the exact moment the shutter was pressed. The film will be processed and colour corrected to achieve a less summery look. As for Tom Hardy being way too small to beat up Batman - well, he may not have height over Christian Bale but the guy is built like a tank. It's a weird thing - people are quite willing to see a hero beat the shit out of a villain that towers over him but can't see that it can work the other way. One of the most intimidating characters on film is, in my opinion Begbie in Trainspotting and he's small and wiry but it's the fact that he can turn and go berserk. Hardy is a great actor, and his turn as Bronson shows that he can be a scary bastard on film. As for Batman being out during the day - well without context etc you can't judge anything. Someone said above that in the comic Bruce Wayne stated that it would have to be a pretty big deal for him to go out in the daylight. Well, perhaps that's the point of this - maybe this is a pretty big deal. It could very well be that after having disappeared - as the trailer seems to state Batman has done he makes a first appearence during the day to fight Bane. Themeatically that works for me. As for the difference in Bane between this and the comic - well, in the comic it seems pretty clear that the Joker's face is his skin now - that's what he looks like full stop - in The Dark Knight it seems pretty clear that the Joker is wearing make up that he has never washed off. That seems to have worked out okay.

why do trolls care about money? Here's why:

    by mrgray

Because the numbers are quantifiable and the only way that they can get an easy "win" in their little win-loss columns of internet opinion. Which is why these same trolls will throw Rotten Tomatoes stats at anyone who dares call out their opinions. "Numbers don't lie." Of course, these are the same douchebags who will counter any bad numbers by saying that "The American public is a bunch of idiots who don't know what's good." Trolls are trolls. And we live in a golden age of antagonistic "me vs you" dialogue.

  • Aug. 1, 2011, 1 a.m. CST

The box office numbers movies rake in are an extremely popular topic on the internet. Check out the Hollywood Stock Exchange. There's millions of people playing that game based on the box office. The Dark Knight Rises potential box office is especially interesting considering that TDK made an unusual 500 million+, and this movie does not have the Joker anymore. Instead, it has some guy that looks like hes dressed up for a professional wrestling audition. Do you hear that noise? It's the air being let out of the box office balloon because of bad buzz spreading about these set photos. Rotten Tomatoes? It's extremely relevant. First of all, it's obviously a guage of how popular a movie was. If most people liked the movie, but there's some asswipe on a talkback declaring that the movie was worse than Alone in the Dark, and the director is a hack, you are obligated to bring up the Rottentomatoes statistics and bitch slap his ass.

    Final Shots versus Spy Shots

    by CM Cheng

So the spy photos don't impress you. Just remember, there are things you can do with a movie camera and some editing that you can't see here. Bane's too small? Camera position can fix that better than CG. Bats doesn't go out during the day? They could be shooting day-for-night. But hey, I could be totally wrong on both counts. But I'll reserve judgement until I see an actual film frame.

  • Aug. 1, 2011, 1:57 a.m. CST

For all you know these shots are taking place at night

    by tjrmusic

It's not that hard now to shoot in daylight and then use final cut (or some other software) to make it night.

    The suit

    by batfunk

Face it, Batman would not wear rubber. Do ninjas wear rubber?

  • Re-watch the teaser trailer-- the short scene with bane lumbering towards batman was intentionally shot to make bane look huge (by placing bane in the foreground and having batman look up slightly). As that is THE ONLY OFFICIAL FOOTAGE SO FAR OF BANE IN ACTION, I would say it's pretty indicative of how the movie will look by 2012. And don't tell me bane didnt look like a fuckin tank in that quick scene...

    by Super Joker

Here we go again with the super trolls that litter this site. I remember when pics leaked of the interrogation scene in TKR. Same bullshit then: "It's too bright" and "This lighting breaks Batman's style" and all the other shit about Joker wearing make up rather than having chemically bleached skin. Who cares if Bane is shorter than Batman? If anything it works a bit better to see him look more thug like. Not only that but you can frame shots to make shorter people look way bigger than other actors - Tom Cruise gets this treatment all the time. It's a process known as film-making but I suppose few people here can use their imagination and apply some original thought just for once before they come out with negative crap. Like anyone will doubt Nolans ability to make this work because a bunch of trolls have a short memory.

Day for Knight: This movie will be insane in the membrane!

    by Zardoz

Seriously, everyone screaming about it being shot in daytime needs to STFU! It's called movie magic and they can literally make the day turn into night. Remember the Tom Hanks movie "Cast Away"? An entire scene that was set during "nighttime" in the movie was shot during broad, middle of the Pacific Ocean daylight and they made it look like fucking black midnight up your mother's asshole! That was done with SFX, but they can do it with the right lenses, film stock and filters in-camera, too. Here's an amazing little fact for you: every pitch-black, dark as molasses movie scene in the history of film was actually bright as fucking daylight when they shot it, too! So just chill the fuck out, my bitches! This little Bat-movie is gonna be the absolute shiz-nit! You just gotta have a little faith...

    by Zardoz

Yeah, it was obvious to me that it will be about camera angles, etc. The teaser definitely made Bane look massive just from the perspective of the camera. I'm sure it will be a mix of SFX and practical, in-camera effects. It's called filmmaking, people. Nolan's an expert at it, so relax!

Then of course when it's something your not a fan if you turn around and pull the same shit. Get your fucking heads out Nolans ass for a moment or two and realize these are JUST FUCKING MOVIES and like every movie people have different opinions, without always having some ulterior motive. Face it, Bane looks short as fuck and the Batsuit STILL looks completely ridiculous, as it always has in these "ultra-realistic" Batman movies. Doesn't mean the movie will be bad, fuck it could turn out to be the greatest movie ever. You don't have to rush to frantically defend every criticism like your fucking Batman himself.

They have color graded and edited the shots. From the way its being lit (lack of strong highlights and very flat) I wouldn't be surprised if they were shooting day for night. This means they shoot during the day and make it look like night in post. This is very common as its easier to shoot and schedule. There were a lot of shots like this in the dark knight. The scene with the joker trying to get to Harvey out of the police van had some great day for nights, like the shot of a police van tumbling into the river was shot during the day. The building lights and street lamps were done digitally.

  • ...Mothman. You know, the cryptid that showed up around the Point Pleasant area back in 1967? A creative filmaker would have thrown a massive curveball into this series and had Batman dealing with the appearance of the Mothman in Gotham city circa now. Totally random and unexpected conclusion to the (up until this point underwhelming) series. Fuck this Bane fool and all the other villains from the Batman comic books. It should have been Mothman. Toss in secret underground military installations, a mysterious transexual Chinese psychic and the fucking thing writes itself. Batsuit looks like a hybrid of Begins and TDK versions. I guess, much like the movie, it's supposed to link the look of both. Hardy, like a lot of bulked up guys, looks much smaller in that outfit. Oddly Bale seems to have bulked up a bit more for Batman this time - again, not as much as the human bear look in Begins, but more so than his anorexic look in TDK. So everything in this movie is going to be half way. Though hopefully not the quality.

Bane is actually a bit SHORTER than Batman. He doesn't look like Bane in presence or in appearance. For that matter, Batman's costume doesn't and has never looked very accurate either. Why do you guys give Nolan a pass for being "so very faithful to the comics" again? After seeing how close Marvel films respect the character's overall look these are starting to look less tolerable than they used to. I know costumes won't make or break a movie, and this should be good, but damn... not even close with Bane here. He's like Mini-Bane.

Uhh... bad example for anyone defending criticisms of these pics, since all those Dark Knight problems were still problems in the final film. It was a very good movie, yes, but it still had problems with things like the silly Batsuit, etc. It is flawed, and it didn't have to be nearly so flawed if it was more honest with the character and source material, and with it's own apparent goal of "Realism."

It is a good thing that pirated combat photos from the Incredible Hulk didn't leak onto the net or people would have been raging about seeing Tim Roth fighting against an invisible opponent.

  • Either you're a little kid or just a very unintelligent adult if you are basing the movie on these pics. First of all, as some have already pointed out, camera angles are everything in filmmaking. It can make Tom Cruise (who's a shrimp, I stood in an elevator with him so I should know) look big and bad. As far as Bane's costume goes, I have faith it's all going to look cool in the end. So he has a coat on? So what? This movie's gonna suck! Look at the bad pictures! Waaaaaahhhhhhh! WAAAAAAAHHHHHhhhhh! Morons.

Bottom line is the pictures in the other Bane talkback, and this one only look okay at best, but that's because they're not the finished product. Remember the teaster trailer where Bronsonized Bane comes lumbering towards Batman. That looked great, and the finished product will be also.

  • I'm not saying this will be anything approaching bad, I'm just saying the fact we will all go see it based on the good faith of the first two has NOTHING whatsoever to do with whether or not Bane is totally micast....which he FUCKING IS!

    Dark Knight Returns

    by auraboy

So, I'm assuming Bane is being written into a variant on the Dark Knight Returns line, with the city descending into chaos with an armed gang (in this case Bane leading his paramilitary league of shadows goons) with the intent on drawing out the Batman, who, although not a 55 yr old like Returns, is still going to be drawn back in and fake his own death at the end. Makes sense. You can't really top the Joker for general 'terrorist' vibe - so go with total civil chaos and breakdown and Batman returning because no-one seems able to stop the rot.

This is the director of Memento/The Prestige/TDK/Inception - i think it's safe to assume he's at the top of his game & knows what he's doing. If you want a comic book size Bane go watch Batman & Robin, no? I thought not. Once Nolan is done thre Batman franchise will revert back to the studio controlled product placement game tie in conveyer belt of Super Hero movies (hellooo Green Lantern) Enjoy this final instalment because in 3 or 4 years when they reboot Batman with Shia LaDuff as Bruce Wayne you'll all be crying onto your keyboards. I'm a man of my worrrrrrd.

    Here's a thought...

    by auraboy

If film versions don't have to be exactly the same as the comics (which go in different directions with different artists and writers anyway), maybe, just maybe, Bane could just be a Bronson style hardcase who doesn't have to be eleven foot tall and 400lbs? Hardy is pretty bulked up considering he's a fairly normal sized guy generally. I'd rather have a great actor playing a psychopath who's bulked to 200lbs than just get a former powerlifter who can barely even say their own name to grunt around but be the right size as a comic version. Only shame is Hardy won't be able to pull that weird fucking grin he did as Bronson. That was the best dead-eyed smirk I've seen.

I don't get too hyped up over spy shots and make a decision on what the finished product will be. Look at the director, the cast, the storyline as we know. The teaser trailer itself was cool and atmospheric. Nolan's got a year to make this a masterpiece. This was Marvel's year to reign at the boxoffice. 2012 will belong to DC (except for a little art film called The Avengers).

i mean what person- who is even vaguely aware of the fate of a standard henchman throughout history- signs up to be a henchman. high risk, fast big money, thrill seeking, i get all know the risks of death i suppose. so then what good is the money? does it go to family? and can you actually trust your villianous boss to pay up and honor that contract? seriously? but hey, you could say bin laden's followers are henchmen. you could say bush's foloowers or the tea party are henchmen. you could say Blackwater or whatever they call themselves as guns for hire are henchmen. the thing is, in movies and comics villany never works and good triumphs and henchmen are killed or arrested. in real life, evil is rewarded and henchmen enforce bad laws.

  • I guarantee if say the Riddler had been introduced in 1994, people would be saying he is a horrible villain. For Nolan's Bat-verse, I would much rather have Bane than Riddler, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze. Bane is great villain in the comics.

If the Riddler was made in 1984 instead of 1948, I imagine a lot of die hard Batman fans with knowledge of the old comics would like him because he would seem like a throwback villain of the past. The same reason why a lot of Batman fans like ventriloquist/Scar-Face. A lot of people, myself included, don't like Bane because he has much more of a Supervillain than arch-criminal, and places Batman much more in a super-heroic world than the world of costumed vigilante. A lot of Batman fans want to see him retain his pulp roots and stay more like the Shadow, the Green Hornet and Dick Tracy then become more like Superman, Spider-Man and the other comic book heroes.

  • Aug. 1, 2011, 2:43 p.m. CST

    by DoctorWho?

I agree. I was always partial to a film placing Batman in a 1940's era detective/sleuth/noir setting. This works because it reduces much of the ultra high-tech gadgetry placing focus on the detective skills and pure physical brawn of the character.
Both Supes and Bats would benefit from that kind of re-imagining. Their mythical status would be enhanced in a 1940's world perspective of science and technology. Not the jaded eyes of today. Face it, in today's world Nolan's Batman would tracked down and revealed as Wayne in no time.

Look its JGL in a police uniform duuuh.... - No it's called an Asian extra. Why Bane, he's "one dimensional"? - Read Knightfall, Bane was one of THE smartest villains ever, he did something The Joker, Penguin, Riddler, BlackMask never did. Figured out Bruce Wayne is Batman. Agree that Bane isn't one dimensional not that you asked or has anyone? Even WWE's Kane is multi-dimensional having his good guy days and bad guy guilt. Curious though about Bane's size. No doubt Bane will have some sorta cool inner struggle before facing Batman in Philly snow. Just worried about the size issue. Night Fall I read as a young guy but can't remember much except for Killer Croc playing a role. Right around 8th grade for me and it was great that the comic's gimmick didn't hide behind any silly chrome embossed overpriced cover like most did. I remember Bane's size fondly and reflective cover's like chicken pox.

Perfectly legit question, and I guess you could argue it is just a matter of opinion (I mean Fu Manchu and Prof. Moriarty are both the templates of classic pulp Arch-Criminals AND the first super-villains). But for me an arch-criminal is just a criminal who is a little larger than life, a crook writ large. He might be a little more outlandish looking, his crimes might be bigger, and he might be slightly more dangerous and cunning, but he still resembles other criminals in the real world, and it is someone you could imagine possible existing because he doesn't need super powers, magic, alien or sci-fi technology or a costume to work. The Joker was a homicidal jewel thief and robber who used poison to kill people; the Penguin was a cunning and clever well-dressed gangster and con man who carried concealed weapons in his umbrella; Two-Face is a disfigured man who makes his decision with a flip or a coin; and the Riddler is a narcissist and egotist who has to leave a riddle behind at his crime scenes. Now compare them to a guy with steel tentacles, a Nazi who gets a magic stone, a mutant who can control magnetism, or guy with a freeze ray. That is the difference between arch-criminal and super-villain. And while Bane isn't as "super" as other supervillains, I think for many people he crosses the line (with his costume and his use of the super-steroid Venom).

  • Aug. 1, 2011, 3:24 p.m. CST

    by Continentalop

I have to take issue with the entire "Bane did what no other villain did: figure out who Batman was." Of course he did because the WRITERS let him figure it out. That doesn't mean he is a great or wonderful character, just means his creators wanted him to be one and did so what I consider a cheap gimmick.

Is he a better actor than just pulling a guy in off the street? Sure. But that's about it. He's WAY too over-the-top. He over-accentuates every fucking syllable and it drives me nuts. He's also to "antsy" in that he's always jerking around or trying to manufacture emotion.'s fucking BANE! This isn't Shakespear for fuck's sake! What no muscle-bound actors in the world? Conti... that alone would not make him a great character

    by Mattman

But the various ways in which he breaks down his opponent before taking him on makes him more than a one-dimensional character. He's also... I wont say 'crazy'... a bit off. He dreamed of a demonic bat all his life and believed his confrontation with Batman to be his ultimate destiny; he felt as though he had no choice. He's one of the few Bat villains who was wise enough not to take on Batman directly until he had sufficiently broken him down. The writers actually set him up fairly well before finally having him break Batman's back. They didn't take the easy way out and just have him stroll into the batcave and snap Batman in two. BUT... he's no Penguin. ;)

It shapes your viewpoint (hell, I love Signal-Man thanks to a JLA story from the 70s), and I can also see people pointing out how he could give Batman some problems, but I don't think you can point to artificial history as an example of his greatness. Even if Joker hadn't killed Jason Todd or crippled Barbara Gordon, he still would be Batman's arch-foe; take away the crippling of Batman and finding out his secret identity, can the same be said about Bane? Having said all that I could see Bane working in Nolan's Batman-movie. He definitely would have to be re-imagined from the comic book version, but I could see you scavenging a character from it. So I don't think Bane can't work, I just personally disagree with the assessment that he is this important and incredible character as others do.

While I like Bane... he's a villain that only works once

    by Mattman

And that's the reason he never stuck. You can only break Batman once. The Joker wants Batman around as long as possible. He exists to toy with Batman... without him he is nothing. So the Joker works very well as a repeat villain. However, a villain that only works once in a comic may be perfect for a 2 hour film. I have a feeling Nolan picked that character for a very specific reason. He tends to use the villains that serve his story. Scarecrow fit perfectly with the theme of fear in Batman Begins. Ra's al Ghul was an example of the extreme which Batman doesn't want to become. Joker was the chaos that comes from order, which will always be present. Harvey was another mirror of Batman who fell from grace and ultimately proved that Batman IS necessary. What purpose will Bane serve?

  • I'm convinced The Joker has known all along, but doesn't want to spoil the fun.

Wasn't the Rumor that Bane cannot feel pain in this one?

    by ajt2111

Remember a month back or so there was a supposed leaked backstory that Ras finds him in a village they're burning? The kid is on fire and he stands up like it's nothing? It would make sense with "the fire rises" they keep throwing around. And it would make sense why Batman has such a hard time whooping his gas mask wearing ass.

  • Aug. 1, 2011, 4:26 p.m. CST

Conti, it's not that big a deal

    by Mattman

In fact, I remember Bane not even making that big a deal about it when he found out. If I remember correctly, he came to the conclusion quite easily. I forget how exactly though. I think he reasoned it out or something. I would never claim that Bane figuring out Batman's identity makes him a great villain. It's what he did with the info he had that made above average. Again, Knightfall is a little vague to me, but I do remember him pitting each villain's strengths against Batman. He knew how to utilize each one of them.

    @continentalop Re: Bane being 'artificial'

    by TallanDagwood

Hello continentalop, I have been reading this thread and finally decided to ask a question. Am I mistaken that your lack of enthusiasm towards bane as a nemesis stems from his being of a more recent vintage than other villains in the batman rogues gallery? I, too disagree with writers creating a super-villain on the spot that is imbued with all of the abilities to defeat the hero without having those abilities accrue over time. Still, no matter how rapidly the abilities are acquired, it is still writers who have given them to him or her (or it), so bane being the villain, as opposed to another of the classic villains, does not bother me.

to the many of you complaining about Bane's height: have you ever seen a movie before? if so, you'd probably realize that very few of them extensively feature full-framed shots of the characters standing toe-to-toe and looking eye-to-eye for the entire movie. you don't think Christopher fucking Nolan and Wally Pfister know how to shoot a scene to cover up any noticeable height differential? not to mention, who gives a shit how tall Bane is? I know everyone has said this a million times, but for god's sake just watch "Bronson." if you're not physically intimidated by Tom Hardy after seeing that movie, then you're either A) Chuck Norris, B) a fucking liar, or C) a lying Chuck Norris.

    breaking batman's back

    by dodgethis27

If they choose to go that route and then have someone else save the day in the end, it would be doing a disservice to the titular hero of the film. In the comics, batman got his back broken by bane after years of crime fighting. It was such a big deal because Batman was respected and feared by criminals. Nolan would essentially be sending Batman out like a chump instead of a legendary hero finally going down. Bruce Wayne hasn't been Batman for very long in the Nolanverse. Hell, the batcave hasn't even been built yet. Are we even past his first year as Batman? I do think, though, that the only reason for the secrecy behind JGL's role would be a major character like Joker, Robin or a new Batman. Hmmm. God, I'm a nerd.

    by Continentalop

It isn't so much that Bane is a newer villain as that I think the newer villains are cut from a different cloth than the older villains.
As I mentioned above, the older villains were much more arch-criminals and less super-villains. They were much more inspired by the rogues gallery of Chester Gould's Dick Tracy and less by Stan Lee's Spider-Man. Bane is definitely a Supervillain from a comic book universe, complete with outlandish origin, motive, costume and even super-powers (Venom formula). He could only exist in a comic book superhero universe, unlike say the Penguin or Two-Face (or at least the Golden Age versions) who you could imagine existing in a pulp or hard boiled crime/detective story and not just a super-hero one.
Bane takes Nolan's Batman further away from the direction I liked that he was going in the TDK, Batman's pulp hero Golden Age roots, and closer to a more comic bookish, super-heroic version like we saw in Batman Begins.

So wait genderblender, you're basing Hardy's performance

    by Continentalop

From a TRAILER of a film you haven't seen? I mean, without any fucking context what is happening during those scenes or why he is acting that way? Fuck. You watch a trailer of AGE OF INNOCENCE you're pretty hard pressed to imagine how the hell Winona Ryder was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but when you see the movie you very well understand. I am not a fan of the film BRONSON, but Hardy wasn't the problem with the film. And from what I hear from friends at Lionsgate, he gives a hell of a performance in WARRIOR. So I think your statements that he can't act are pretty baseless. Plus, what the fuck do you know about acting?

  • I didn't like Bronson, but it was a very well made film, and Hardy knocked it out of the park. The movie was a character study, but it just wasn't an enjoyeable one thats all. When Hardy is playing an actual Brit, and using his natural accent, he is great. But, I'm not convinced he'll play an American as easily. And while he was very cool in Inception, he chewed the scenery, and relished the sound of his words a little too much. And this is my slight problem with Hardy, like Daniel Craig, they pose and strut a little too much, and enjoy the sounds of their voices a little too much. I hate that Marlon Brando school of acting where actors pause and draw out all their line delivery, its fucking obnoxious. Bruce Willis is another offender.

The Riddler shoulda been the villain.

    by Royston Lodge

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It should have been Michael Emerson as a low-key, subtle, serial-killing version of The Riddler. Like Se7en or The Bone Collector, with Batman as the investigator. We've never seen a big-screen Batman story where he show's why he's called the "World's Greatest Detective". So far it's all been gadgets and fistfights. I'd love to see a Batman movie where his gadgets, money and muscles are of little-to-no help, and he has to rely on his mind.
