Four hours, and not another post?! Controversial my arse.

Being a huge fan of this novel, I can't help but feel somewhat let down by the trailer. The book is about a killer, a viscious, psychotic killer, that tortures, mutilates and maims with no moralistic compunctions whatsoever; the fact that he looks like a QG model, is incrediblly intelligent, has great wealth and beautiful friends, is only incidental. I feel the film may be gravitating more towards his "normal" life, versus his "actual" life. This is a killer and the film needs to be representrative to this. I understand the high gore content of the book, may not translate well to the screen, but let's keep our fingers crossed!!!
Maybe a full-length trailer will deliver the goods. This teaser, unfortunately, did not.

I can tell this movie is going to be the biggest propaganda for mysoginist everywhere. Guess I have to check it out.

Keep it NC-17. If you make the cuts to give it that holy R rating, youre just making it accessable to every kid in America. And thats exactly what Hollywood wants. Warner Bros knows that if 13 year olds couldnt sneak into R rated movies, THE MATRIX wouldnt have been the blockbuster it was. Loews Theaters knows this too. The MPAA knows it as well. The whole rating system is designed to fail, thats the point. Its designed to dupe dumbass parents into thinking it works. Not only does it not work, but in conjunction with huge multiplex theaters (where anyone can walk into any movie), I believe its desgined specifically to fail. Kids sneaking into R rated movies is not a petty flaw in Hollywood rating system; its there on purpose, because kids sneaking into R rated movies is the financial foundation of the entire industry! When they say R rated movies are for adults, THATS TOTAL BULLSHIT! Then what are NC-17 movies for? Why do most R rated movies have the intellectual feel of a saturday morning cartoon? If Camel cigarettes are for adults, why did they use a cartoon character to market them? Fuck this country. They say they want to protect the kids, but theyre going after the youth market with a dagger.
-
Everyone knows the MPAA is a total joke that supposedly is there for the protection of our children. Well who the hell is protecting the sanity of the adults? I agree with the above Talk Backer that our R rated fare is pretty damn soft. Christ, they wanted to give the rerelease of 'The Wild Bunch' an NC-17 when the original had gotten an R! Talk about revisionistic history! How bout when Color of Night added in all its NC-17 material for video, only to see them change their minds and give it back it's R!! These ratings mean nothing now. Time for a new system. First off, most 15 year olds can get into an R movie with no problem what-so-ever. So create a rating that is no one under 15 allowed PERIOD. We adults can get our fix of mature material, and Hollywood doesn't loose out on the youngins with the disposable cash. You work backwards from there, say one that aims for about the 12 year olds (you know, puberty), and then you have your general audience rating. Kids movies wouldn't get such a negative vibe anymore cause its aiming at a larger demographic, your middling fare would be about as intense as a PG-13 is today, and your adult fare could finally be FOR ADULTS. Shit makes my blood boil. It's like when people get up in arms over some show that's airing in the 10 o'clock hour and gets bitched at for what it my do to our children. Well, what the fuck are you doing letting your nine year old stay up until 10 for? Okay, Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now.
-
The fact this received an NC-17 rating will come as no surprise to anyone who read the book. There is simply no way to make an R rated version of this. Ellis intentionally made the violence over-the-top, and to weaken that would completely lessen the level of satire he was aiming for (I think the book is comedy). What I'm afraid of is, with the scarlet letter that Puritan Jack has pinned to it, that I'll probably have to wait for video or drive really far to see it (like I had to do when Orgazmo played 70 miles away in the one theatre it played in New Jersey). So far, the MPAA has really only targeted movies that have fairly limited appeal in the first place. My guess is American Psycho is about as violent as Saving Private Ryan, which sailed through with an R. Too bad Spielberg didn't direct this.
-
Ok, It looks like we're going to get back to the "Kill the NC-17" discussions that happened way back when Eyes Wide Shut came out. I agee with getting rid of NC-17, but just about everybody who says that suggests replacing it with a way of making it even harder for people under 18 to see movies. I am 15 years old, a sophmore in high school, and I have read the book American Psycho and loved it, I have also seen Natural Born Killers, Eyes Wide Shut, Last Temptation of Christ and most of the other great movies that according to conventional wisdom I shouldn't be allowed to see. Not only was I mentally fit for these movies, but I cannot think of many people my age who aren't. NC-17 should be scrapped, but it shouldn't be replaced with something worse. Teens don't kill people because of violent movies and teens don't get eachother pregnant because we saw American Pie. That's just insane.
-
I don't know what's worse, this movie receiving a NC-17 rating or getting it because of a sex scene. American Psycho did not get the rating because of the violence ( director Mary Harron has declared that most of the violence is kept off screen )but because of a threesome involving the title charcter and two prostitues. MPAA was offended beacuse they all looked boreing during the scene, which was the intension. The scene described how the characters treated sex as a transition, and it's vital to the movie. MPAA can go f@ck itself.
-
The first half of your post is completely true. But it is hypocritical of you to complain about the "puritanical society", yet force those puritanical standards against everybody under 18. As I have said before, there is nothing in a movie like American Psycho (or Eyes Wide Shut, or Natural Born Killers, ect) that is "inapropriate" for most people between the ages of, say, 14 and 18. However, we are being denied access to some works of art, because society (and people like Ed_209) feel the need to protect us.
-
Movies don't make stupid people do stupid things, they just make unimaginative people do stupid things in a slightly more clever fashion. That's what copycat behavior is all about.
I just wish there was an enforced NC-17 rating for American Psycho if only so that I wouldn't have to listen to the giggling idiot teenie Christian Bale fans shrieking their way through the film. I'm getting tired of having to rent movies just so I can hear the entire thing without ill-behaved children of all ages acting as if public theaters are their living rooms. -
I think you're missing 209's point. See, Jack Valenti doesn't think there's anything wrong with the current ratings. He doesn't care what the public's opinion of NC-17 is, he just likes the power he lordes over studios. Now, if the theaters followed 209's suggestion of mandatorily carding and having ushers at the door for such movies, that might make parental groups less antsy over the local multiplex's playing these movies. Yeah, sucks to be you and not get into these, but at least we'd be getting to see the director's true vision. The truth is, this is never going to happen. Theater chains are not going to fork over the dough to post ushers at the 25 plexes one screen that's airing an NC-17 flick. As it is, I sneak into films on a regular basis (cause I don't feel like paying for some of the crap on screen) and have never even been questioned. Sure, put the "we card" sign on the front of the box office, but that's about as convincing as Phillip Morris' anti smoking PSA's we see on TV. The theater makes their money off the popcorn, so what do they care if once inside you rush over to the R feature. I'm an adult and would like to watch mature themes on the big screen, not when it's added back on video. Maybe if they put under the rating WHY it got that rating, things could get better. I think the MPAA is still feeling the sting of 'South Park' and are now going after things with gusto. At least by dumping the NC-17 and going back to X, Valenti would feel the slap on the face of failure and maybe resign. AHHHH, one can only hope.

Is it just me or does Real Player suck shit? Oh, yes! Please give me the worst quality possible, while pausing frequently during viewing for net conjestion! Real Media, FUCK YOU! The medication's kicking in now... ZZZZZZZZZZ
-
I'd rather be able to see a good movie minus 4 seconds of sex, than have the knowledge that the "director's vision" (which is very rarely that different from the ordinary version) is out there, but some government legislaters whom I've never met don't think I can handle it. For example, (and sorry to keep coming back to this), but did Eyes Wide Shut really lose so much by the tiny bits of censorship? No, but it's fun to bitch about.Ideally, there should be no reason to cut a director's vision, but creating a worse system simply for the sake of change is not going to help anything. Not that any of this will ever happen anyway...
-
and, yes, Realplayer does suck shit.
-
This movie will suck. Period. The future Anakin Skywalker did himself a favor staying away from this one.
-
I read the back in the 80's and sort of liked it. it was a ride like Clockwerk Orange. But judging from the teaser, it looks more like a comedy. at the core of it all the story is a study of what can happen to somebody who has everything. Also, without giving away the book, I don't think the ending can be translated to film without looking like "Boxing Helena 2".
This should be interesting ! -
i agree the teaser looked like total shit on Real Player.
-
The trailer looks prety cool. I can smell some Stanley Kubrick in it.
-
youre right, my logic was kinda fucked. Let me perform a re-do. I guess what I meant to say is that Warner Bros counts on theater workers to not check IDs. However, since April 20 1999, theater workers all of a sudden have a conscience, and now we get ID'd all the time. My point is now nil so Im gonna go crawl in a hole for a while.

Hey i am willing to admit i am not much a reader, but i have read this book. Anyone heard of Paul Bernardo?? Well from what i understand this novel was like a bible to him. It gave him alot of
nasty ideas. The book is one thing, but the movie is going to be a disaster. Anyone who has read the book will know that there is no way that the novel's brutal story can be portrayed on screen, and maybe it shouldn't be. I saw the trailer with Dogma a couple of months ago and i couldn't believe the trailer. Anyone who see this, and hasn't read the book , might just think that this is some kind of dark comedy. Maybe it will be but if its based at all on the original novel by Brian Easton Ellis i don't see how it can be. Does rape , torture and a starving rat eating a women pussy,, literally, sound funny to you????.... ps... i doubt this last thing will be in the movie but... that's the fucking point. Some novels just SHOULD NOT be made into films.. -
How about giggling adults? I'm in "The Talented Mr.Ripley" tonight and during some scenes where Ripley's homosexual tendencies are more than hinted at I hear many people in the crowd (most in their 20's, I'm sure, as this is a college town) snickering, giggling and going "Oh my god!" I especially wanted to turn around to the girl behind me who kept doing that and tell her to grow the fuck up and watch the damn movie or else leave so I can enjoy it without your giggling ruining the experience.

Let me be the first to say this movie is terrible. I saw a test screening in NYC a few months ago, and it is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. To be fair, I never read the novel on which it's based. But then again I never read The Godfather or Schindler's List. I am in no way shape or form trying to compare those movies to this piece of crap. I'm just trying to point out how you don't necessarily have to have read the source material to enjoy an adaptation. I wrote a review for American Psycho a few months ago, but Mr. Knowles chose not to post it. His perrogative. I remember that I kinda liked the first couple of minutes. I remember the first couple of scenes dealt with what a self absorbed asshole Christian Bale's character was, showing him in the shower (using a voiceover), talking about about the different soaps and moisturizers he uses, doing crunches, etc. Then the movie just fell apart. I can see why Leonardo DiCaprio dropped out of this film. Whoever wrote the screenplay will probably never get work again. It's that bad. The acting is just as bad, if not worse ( with the exception of Willem Dafoe who plays a detective). I've never seen or heard of Christian Bale before, I now know why. This guy makes Keanu Reeves look like Marlon Brando. Chloe Sevigny (who I like)phoned in her performance, as a shy secretary. Bale and Sevigny have a scene together in his apartment, that has some of the worst dialogue ever. Even the look of the movie sucked. It's supposed to be set in NYC (but it looks an awful lot like Canada.) In all fairness though, what I saw was a work print transferred to video, via some editing computer. (I think that's what they said before the movie started.) One of the few bright spots was the sex scene (which is causing all the controversy). I kinda figured it would get an NC-17. The scene ends with Bale ripping off one of the prostitute's vaginas with his teeth, and chasing the other one down the halls of his apt. bldg naked. With a chainsaw!!!! Lions Gate is smart to try and get some publicity out of that, cuz they know the movie itself is shit. I've seen better movies on Cinemax. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

Why do you think TARZAN made $150 million. Because it was playing at the same time as AMERICAN PIE. I am sixteen and have to sneak into half the movies I see because, regrettably, the mature, serious, artful films are mostly rated R. I can't help that. I am a film fanatic, and I will do whatever I have to do to see the movies I have to see. America is becoming a fascist country before our very eyes. I am the movie review guy for my Catholic school newspaper and have been forced this week to replace EYES WIDE SHUT on my top ten list with "something more in tune to the Jesuit message."
Anything the MPAA tries will not work. Everything they are afraid of: the influence on kiddies, pirating, etc.; they have no way of preventing. If a kid wants to get his rocks off at WILD THINGS, then he will. Just like if a person wants to copy DVD's or watch movies on their computers, they will--sooner or later.
Hollywood and the MPAA know about all the ways to get around the rating system, and they don't care. Why do you think almost every other country has an appropriate age for the movie, and America has the ambiguous G's, PG's, and R's? What's the difference in a G and PG movie nowadays. I don't know. And neither do today's parents. That is the point. Drop the kiddies off at the local multiplex for a round of ANY GIVEN SUNDAY as you try to find the perfect laydel at Williams-Sonoma. Or better yet, buy their tickets for them. That's what my mom does. She doesn't care. She realizes that I am a mature person and can handle what Hollywood throws at me. My dad--that's the one I have to sneak around. I've got ten months, and I'm done with this MPAA charade. I can't wait to tell my dad to go fuck himself as I see Quentin Tarantino's new movie. And ..., you are pretty cool. Throwing out some good ideas. AllThumbs, as always, you're a great gal. People have the wrong perception of people our age. And something about the system has to change. See you at AMERICAN PSYCHO in June. -
AMERICAN PSYCHO? Isn't that the "Edgar Allen Poe" Michael Jackson vehicle? Sorry, wrong Talkback.

First of all, I might as well say I'm from Sweden. The rating system we have here is for all children, 7 years (or under if accompanied by an adult), 11 years (or under if accompanied by an adult and 15 (no one under 15 gets in). I think it's a good system. I can't say the American system sucks hard, though I must be honest and say I like our system better. HOWEVER, it's the MPAA I can't understand. Violent movies are OK, they can get rated R, but as soon as there is some nudity or a little sex it's NC-17. Can someone tell me what the fuck that is all about?? I mean, what kind of message are they sending out? Sex is worse than violence. Really, Eyes Wide Shut was nothing to scream about. It had some nudity, some sex, so fucking what? Wouldn't it be better if people had sex instead of killing each other? Television didn't want to show the nude Cruise/Nicole scene (so I've heard, so if it's not true, I'm sorry) because... well, they were nude. Here on Swedish TV they showed it, no big deal. It's a cute scene. Anyway, I could ramble on for months about how fucked up the MPAA is, but I won't. Take care everyone!
-
Besides the whole violence thing (especially the above-mentioned rat eating the pussy scene), the movie won't be able to convey the concept that the book sort of implies: that this is all in his head. He never did any of this shit. That's why, for example, the apartment of that guy he killed was all clean and shiny and being sold. The book only hints at it, so subtly that I had to rearead it before I got the point. But the movie would either have to ignore it completely, or spell it out very blatantly. Neither way would work, just like neither ignoring the violence completely or putting it all on-screen wouldn't work either. There is really no way to make a movie out of this that equals the book. That said, I'm gonna see it as soon as it comes out.

no one under the age of 18 should be allowed in to any movie, EV
by palmer eldritch
And it should be like driving a car, you should take a test and get a movie license! That way people who say things like "the movie would either have to ignore it completely, or spell it out very blatantly. Neither way would work, just like neither ignoring the violence completely or putting it all on-screen wouldn't work either" wouldn't suffer the stress of being exposed to a medium they obviously cannot properly comprehend. ... -- One day, son, you're not gonna be 15 any more (chronologically anyhow) and and for the rest of your life you (and me and the rest of us) are gonna have to watch some half arsed censored versions of movies or toned down concepts 'cos the studios wanted to make sure your teenage virgin butt could get a ticket. Having said all that I have to say the system in the UK is worse. for a start they have five ratings, one of which (PG) is totally useless as it's exactly the same as the "U" certificate (same as American "G" anyone can see it) but it means the film might be a little tougher. Then there's the 12, brought in because studios complained that movies hat were to much for the PG rating were getting classed "15" and some of them were aimed at a young teenage market. So then there's "15", same as "12" and the subsequent "18" as they set the minimum age at which people can get in. I reckon that the next best system should be to scrap this and replace it with a three certificate system: "U" (or "G" if you prefer), PA (Parental Accompaniament, which must be enforced) and 18, also to be enforced. But basically, if I ruled the world, nobody under 18 would be allowed to do anything but go to school, watch family rated TV and wash the dishes for pocket money (which they'll have to save for when they're older). Basically, when ever kids get out in the real world, they screw up and fuck things up for the rest of us.
