If this is all a dream, what’s gonna happen when the Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day wakes up?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

In my Comic-Con delirium I think it’s more than possible I’ve missed one or two BTS pics. The fact that I have no idea tells you just how nuts this has been..

Back on the wagon for me. Today’s pic is from a childhood favorite of mine, Joe Dante’s Explorers. I remember watching this film a lot with Stand By Me because of the River Phoenix connection. I love the sense of wonder and the sense of humor at play here. This is a great kids wish-fulfillment flick. Who didn’t want to build their own spaceship growing up? Hell, I still do and am probably even less capable of making that happen than I was as a 10 year old.

So, check out the pic of Dante with young River. You can see Ethan Hawke peeking into the shot, too!

Thanks to Jelle Boucher for sending this along. Click to embiggen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.

Tomorrow’s behind the scenes pic is coming. It’s gonna get you!

    Ethan's lunch

    by badmotherbox

The image of young Ethan Hawke cramming a ham sandwich into his mouth as he launches into space is forever burned into my mind. Thank you, Explorers.

HARRY, where's the AMY WINEHOUSE article?

Shame on you. Some of her songs have been featured in films before and you should give her her due respect!

Whinehouse: Fuck that heroin addicted whore

    by Philbert

She was a trainwreck, and just because her music was in some movie at some point doesn't mean she needs an obit here.

  • July 24, 2011, 5:15 a.m. CST

    Too much clutter here

    by James Stevenson

Not enough for an Amy Winehouse obit. God loved (and took her too soon) the crazy bitch. She'll always be tops to me for ragging on Bono at some music awards ceremony in 2006. I hope she's getting HIGH as a motherfucker up in Heaven as I type this. She's probably laughing at all of us even now.

Great fun til the last third.

    by Jason

Great beginning, fun middle part, a bit of a letdown with the last 35 or so minutes. Felt that the aliens finally encountered were over the top & unbelievable. Great fun though. Incredible to think that 3 years after this photo was taken, River Phoenix would be nominated for an Oscar. Missed actor.

No place like aicn for bitter, pathetic cowards to spew bile at dead artists before they're in the ground. Something tells me no one of Tony Bennett's stature will be praising your value as an artist and a person when you die. Hopefully that's soon.

    by ChickenStu

She's always asking me to dig my old DVD of it out. IMO, it's a nice idea - but it gets stupid when they go into space, which is a shame.

Loved this movie as a kid

    by KEVIN_COSTNERS_RECYCLED_PISS

But yeah, even back then I thought the aliens were too goofy and let the whole thing down. This is one of the few movies from my youth I think could actually benefit from a remake.

  • July 24, 2011, 8:43 a.m. CST

I loved this movie as a kid too

    by Autodidact

But it's one of those that when I got just a little bit older I started to find embarassing. Mainly all the stuff with the alien.

    by welcometothepartypal

You think she wanted to be in that league? I thought she was a talent, but not yet ready to enter the 27 club. I just wonder if that's something she thought of. Have not seen explorer's for years, but liked it back in the day.

  • July 24, 2011, 9:29 a.m. CST

How the fuck did that guy go on a 90 min shooting spree?

    by Lucky13

Were all the cops on vacation? Striking for more benefits? That's the most disgusting news I've heard in awhile. Sickening that any human being could be capable of such a thing, and frightening that a police force could be so inept that they allowed it to happen. 90 fucking minutes? 90+ dead? I just don't get it.

lucky13... he was on an island

    by Autodidact

And he just blew up parliament. He sowed some major confusion. It took the cops 45 minutes to arrive at the island and 45 minutes to subdue him after that. Compare this to the cops at Columbine who hung around in the parking lot for an hour while hearing kids get shot inside the school.

    Winehouse

    by Caerdwyn

She doesn't need an obit here. God. Was she a director? An actress? No. She was a mess. If she had a song or two featured in a film, well woohoo, good for her. I had a picture of my cock spliced into Fight Club, but I doubt I'll get an obit on AICN.

  • July 24, 2011, 10:15 a.m. CST

Lucky 13. Try reading the news before spouting off..

    by Hint_of_Smegma

...about inept cops you tosser. The scene was a small island holiday camp, hence why there were no cops to start with (and the majority of the nearest cops were dealing with the bomb he'd already set off at government offices on the mainland) and also hence why the twat was able to kill so many people - they had nowhere to go and he was picking them off even when they were in the water trying to swim to safety. What's rather upsetting beyond the horrific incident itself is that due to Norwegian law, the bastard can't get more than 21 years for it. But the cops in this incident were in no way to blame and considering the ones who responded to apprehend him were going up against a guy with an automatic weapon and who could spot them coming, you ought to be saying what brave buggers they were and not responding with typical anti-police fuckwaddery.

  • July 24, 2011, 10:16 a.m. CST

    I'm not being uncharitable here

    by david starling

But although Amy Winehouse songs featured in movies, they didn't make said movies "leap off the page" because of them, so to speak. I mean, she didn't have an effect on a particular movie, did she? Well, other than the rumblings regarding the Bond Movie. I mean, the connections of Amy Winehouse to the movie world are so tenuous, that anyone I guess could have an obituary here - why not have a obituary for Lucien Freud, the celebrated realist painter, who passed away on Wednesday here? I'm sure he had a lot of connections to the movie world, or at least influences for sure. In short, there are more suitable places for respect to be paid to Amy Winehouse (reputed music sites and publications). However, she had next to zero real contribution to the movie world, so that is why there hasn't been anything posted here. The end.

  • July 24, 2011, 10:17 a.m. CST

    by jimmy_009

Although I'm sure they'd lose some of the charm and turn out like a Disney channel movie of the week. But this is the kind of movie that should be remade - flawed but with great potential.

Sorry, I'm still shaking my head about the poor little kid in Brooklyn who got lost and wound up dead and in pieces in some sicko's fridge. I'm a little behind on the latest senseless atrocity of the day. Oh yeah, I loved Explorers... I remember looking forlornly at my Commodore 64 wondering how the hell I could make my own floating bubble to fly around in.

    Winehouse

    by tomdolan04

One decent album five odd years ago and you've got the sycophantic press here in the UK, that loved to roll out pictures of her perpetually pissed, describing her as a 'legend'. The Fern Cottons (where everyone is a LEDGE yo yo yo) and the weasel cast of BBC staff in particular.
To be honest, the media are probably loving this and I guarantee you'll have some execs at Universal secretly high fiving as they'll get to milk...erm re-release her back catalogue (all two albums and Z-sides of it) in loving cash i...tribute.
I saw her at a festival a few years back and she was shit as an artist live. Yes, I'm sure her soul was troubled and all that jazz but as an audience how long can you justify a drug addict being wheeled out to sing the four songs she's famous for (one being a cover version). I fully appreciate she had a good voice and you'll get people discussing the nature of addiction, but ultimately she pissed her fortune and support up the wall over too long a period.
I truely hope her death offers the regularly occuring message to addicts that no one is invincible and to not only seek help, but want to BE helped. I hope Amy Winehouse the person is at peace now, but don't ask me to mourn her passing as an artist.
Which radio station has the balls to play Rehab first?

    AMY winehouse deserves an obit

    Where is it?!!!!

  • July 24, 2011, 11:08 a.m. CST

    An obit for Amy Winehouse?...

    by jimmy_009

Aside from the fact that she was an average talent who had one record and was never in movies to my knowledge... why would she have an obit here? She's not even a footnote in music history, let alone film. And from all accounts a crappy human being. No obits please.

  • July 24, 2011, 11:09 a.m. CST

I'm not saying she deserved an obit here..

    by Righteous Brother

As this is a movie web site, I DON'T think she deserves an obit here. In fact I'm not even a fan of her work, I recognise that she was talented though, I was referring to people calling her a crack whore, and that sort of stuff. The internet just seems to bring out a nasty side in people, I guess its the anonymity these sites afford people. I'm guessing that the nastiest bitches on this site, and god knows there's a lot of them, are the meekest, quietest mutherfuckas in real life.

THE JOURNEY WAS BETTER THAN THE DESTINATION

    by Mullah Omar

I really liked EXPLORERS but I agree with everyone above who posted that the movie went a bit off the rails when they met up with the aliens. Outstanding concept and mostly great execution. I wouldn't argue against anyone who called this a classic, because I loved this as a kid, but I would hesitate to recommend that a friend watch EXPLORERS without some kind of qualification about the last quarter of the movie. However, I'd certainly recommend this to parents who want to show their kids something interesting and thought-provoking.

Leni Reifenstahl had a huge influence on film - regardless of her motives. Anyone who studies film would be aware of this influence, and I think marking her passing would be appropriate on this site - I don't think that would mean agreeing with her propaganda work. I'm just wondering, what movies Ms. Winehouse has contributed to? Is it just that one of her songs was on a movie soundtrack or did she write original work for a movie?

    by Bad Wolff

is the whole point of this film. You're SUPPOSED to think the aliens are kind of crap. They are. There's even dialogue between the kids about being disappointed now that they have actually met the aliens. Honestly, you guys need to do a little thinking about intent in film.

    Great, great film, Explorers.

    by catlettuce4

I loved it as a kid and love it today. But even as a kid I remember thinking the aliens were too goofy and spoiled the tone of the film. And yes, I think it could have been handled better and still worked as a story and a movie. I have no problems with the actual ending (post aliens) though. Great score by Goldsmith as well.

They don't make movies with kids like they used to.

    by kevred

Or, for the most part, movies for kids, either. The corporate filmmakers seem to want kids to skip having imaginations and go right to the shameless consumption of marketed goods phase faster than ever. And I know, that's been going on for a long time now.

Love this movie so much. Probably my favorite of the kid 80's movies (Goonies, Monster Squad, etc...). Even with the goofy Aliens - just something about this flick has always stuck with me. I think it had one of the best soundtracks of all time as well.

    by UltraTron

It was like building up to a deliberate let-down. All this preparation for what seemed like potentially the ultimate adventure. Then it's just an alien kid fucking around. I get that kids fucking around with science meet kids from space fucking around. But it's still like that line from back to the future 2 where doc brown says all this epic shit and you think the series is gonna get all cosmic. Then it just ends up being doc brown finding love.

    AHH -- FUCK ME

    by Lucky13

AICN ate my post, and I forgot to fuckin' copy it first. It was long, fact-filled, and included quotes from the AP. To summarize, the police there come off as incompetent twits. Lots of amateur-hour excuses. 90 minutes for a guy to open fire on a large group of people, out in the open, is unacceptable. Their 911 type operators were telling the shooting victims to stop calling so the lines would be open for the bombing situation. Good call.
