Mondo's COWBOYS & ALIENS Poster is the best image for the film thus far!
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm quite anxious to see COWBOYS & ALIENS... it premieres tonight at Comic Con - and I'm quite nervous and, yeah, anxious to hear what folks think. I like what I've seen, but I'm hoping there's a lot more to it all - and I really hope the film just kicks ass like this new Daniel Danger poster that MONDO is releasing at their Booth #433 right now.
Look at this:

This image is powerful. Iconic. And absolutely skunks all other images I've seen from the movie. That's fightening. Stark and powerful. I love this poster. Those that score these at comic con have my envy.

What does any of this have to do with Tyler Perry?

awesome. Hope the film is too.

Thoroughly mediocre. And why is it newsworthy every time this company creates another poster?

That poster sure is strange...kinda disturbing as well. Can't wait to see this. They did a lot of filming for this not to far from our ranch here in New Mexico. I recognized a lot of the locations just from watching the trailers...places I drive by all the time. Has anyone else noticed that the huge multi-armed ship kinda resembles a Godzilla-sized version of the so-called "Rods" that people claim to see and photograph? (Cue in TWILIGHT ZONE music)..
-

Yeah ... 'Rods' are bugs moving very fast; too fast for the camera.

But people still want to believe they're some sort of interdimensional critter.

It's the same reason why I didn't have much hope for Sherlock Holmes when they cast RDJ. In that case, it paid off. I just hope Craig's accent isn't godawful.
-
Really, I like some of these posters quite a bit. But I'm not going to sit by my Iphone all day and wait for my Twitter to alert me that the posters are now on sale.
Have the original limited high quality run. Than a few months down the road release the poster like any other standard quality poster and sell it exclusively through the website. -
is completely underwhelming. I've yet to see one single thing to excite me. And I'm a reasonably excitable person when it comes to movies. I'm not jaded like a lot of folks. This just seems completely flat though.
-
Won't see this poster at your local chapter office of the NAACP.

Old West edition.

There ya go.
-
Looks like Skyline. We can only hope it doesn't suck as bad
-
Shouldn't a movie poster (even a Mondo one) share at least a little of the style of the movie? Tired of these Mondo posters.
-
Is this not marketing to the Apple generation? It has nothing to do with the film. It is multi platform advertising, reaching markets that the film will not reach other wise. It transends the B Movie premise and gets it into the style bibles and design blogs. It allows a way of the 30 something new family men to be involved with the film. Han Solo and Jiames Bond in a retro designed sci fi film.
The fan made Saul Bass-esque opening credits have been co-opted by the studios (not that they did not have them anyway) and screen printed Star Wars posters are now fully integrated into film marketing.
Cowboys and Aliens is no less of a retro cliche looking for a script than Tansformers. It is a post modern joke like Pride and Prewjudice and Zombies given a $100m buget -
has nothing to do with the actual film.
That's not a ringing endorsement! -
Kings of the hype generating, overly stylized, ultimately pointless movie posters ...
That thing up there is shit ... -

And why is it newsworthy every time this company creates another poster?
by sierratangofoxtrotuniform
Because AICN and Mondo are in cahoots.
-
Jul 23, 2011 7:46:13 PM CDT
I can't say it does much for me, and it's newsworthy because I have a feeling AICN gets a kickback
by alienfanatic
Mondo makes a number of great posters, but I knew before I clicked that Harry would be the one posting the story. I'd wager that Harry's close business relationship with Alamo means he helps promote Mondo on the side.

These Mondo Fucks screwed ComicCon collectors over - You guys can suck it!
by professor_monster
I had people following Twitter, watching the booth and waiting for those Captain America propaganda posters (A is for Victory and the one with the Shield ) and what do these Mondo ASSHOLES do - they make it where you can't just buy the posters - no no. You have to wait and follow Twitter then RUSH back over to their booth and hope they are not sold out - well, guess what - When they finally decide to put the best ones on sale Stan Lee drops by and they notify everyone that they only brought HALF of what they promised - that's right - 175 posters - actually LESS than half- and they sell out in 15 min. I will never bother with these DICKS again
-
if you had managed to be one the 175 who got them would you still be calling them dicks? or is it just that you didn't get what you wanted? a selfish little rant methinks.

Being an artist myself i really appreciate cool styles and talented artists of all kinds. But (most) of these Mondo posters are really not that good.

crow3711 -- Not even 175 got the posters - only 80 did
by professor_monster
I still managed to get my hands on the posters i wanted - a friend of mine worked for the cell corp who were right behind their booth and he asked if he could get a set when they weren't supposed to be selling and they sold it to him. I'm more angry at how they treated people who got there early to get their product - how they made a maze run for a limited number of prints and promised more than they had to offer. How in order to get your hands on their stuff, you would have to sacrifice valuable time (which is precious at comic con) waiting for them to say - Okay, we're selling for 15 min. Shit man, just treat people fair.
-
Meh.
-
Always surprised and delighted.
-
You into quadrapalegic senior dwarves too? Small world.
-
...the movie doesn't seem -fun-. It's got aliens, it's got cowboys, but the whole thing seems WAY too serious and depressing. If I go to see a movie called Cowboys and Aliens, I would expect to have FUN. That's what the ads are missing, any sense that there's fun to be had.
-
Harrison Ford. Seriously, your average moviegoer has no idea hes in it and would likely be a lot more interested if they saw him playing the old hard-ass sheriff in the trailers more. I really dont think people give much of a shit about Daniel Craig.

The movie looks good and so does the poster.
-
Well, that means the movie will be bad.
-
not good at all. It has a few PANELS that are good, but the story is so random at times it becomes so disjointed at a bunch of places. The story looks like it's going to be an adaptation in name only. The basic premise is the aliens come down by accident and they are conquerors. The cowboys are fighting off the indians from getting to settlers coming into this new town. The town mayor is a shady some bitch. The last 45 minutes should play like the Rango sequence underground.
Oh, and if they use the comic renderings, the aliens will look like shit. -
James Bond and Indiana Jones fight aliens in the old west? What the fuck are they smoking in Hollywood?
-
I swear, these Mondo posters continue to be ridiculously underwhelming. Sure, there's an occasional one that actually looks like some work went into it -- for example, the ROBOCOP or CAPTAIN AMERICA posters...
...But that's only because there's actually something THERE to flesh out the posters. But even then it's still just random images tossed together in a hodge-podge mess. So, great, it basically means someone pulled out whatever photo reference stills were given to them, at which point they slap a montage together.
But this things? UTTER CRAP. For fuck's sake, it looks like a quick color marker sketch that someone pounded out, to show to an art director along with other quick sketches to get final approval to move on to rendering something more fully.
And obviously I'm not alone in thinking this. EVERY TIME there's a new Mondo poster, AICN wets the bed praising it and then you can read the comments section and see that most people are either saying "men" or they're scoffing at the ludicrous price Mondo will charge for the prints, as if any of these turds are actually worth it.
Seriously, does AICN have a vested interest in Mondo? Or get some kind of kickback? Because these things are pretty fucking shitty and yet AICN always praises them. And I do mean ALWAYS. To the point that there's NEVER any genuine criticism of them on even the most basic artistic or design level.
Oh, and did I mention that this one in particular is SO fucking shitty that it doesn't even rank against my toilet paper for wiping my ass with! -
Unfortunately, nothing that evokes images from SKYLINE is remotely positive.
-
I agree, maybe it should be reddish-brown instead of blue to match the film more.
The reason the trailers don't seem "fun" is because this movie is going to suck. -
of Storm Thurgerson's artwork for that Muse album?

"I lower my expectations whenever they get a Brit to play a cowboy"
Modern-day British accent is probably no more or less close to an 1870s cowboy's accent than a modern day American. There was a huge mish-mash of accents, and they sure as hell didn't preserve their accents in aspic for 140 years.
For similar reasons, I don't give much of a toss about Costner's accent in Robin Hood: none of us know what an accent then was like, and maybe Costner's is closer than that of Errol Flynn or Richard Greene.
But it has been scientifically proven that nothing in the history of cinema is as bad as Russell Crowe's accent. -
No color or flavor.

You really are a clubhouse full of assholes who've forgotten what FUN at the movies is all about. But here's a clue, it's not about people like you! -

Really weak. Looks like the work of a young graphic design student; for which you could suggest was a reasonable effort considering the lack of experience. You have to be pretty confident to stick that up for sale though. I guess the people behind this know that some people will literally buy anything.

So, they do original T-shirt and poster design...out of Austin. I am assuming that the studios give them permission to utilize the names of the films? Production companies/studios are very "possessive" about their marketing, so this is all very interesting. Does Mondo pay usage fees?
-
amateur Saul Bass mimicry.
Among many other problems with this, it lacks a focal point. All of Bass's great work (and good graphic design generally) draws your eye somewhere.
Also, the tone is so… creepy. Is that REALLY the tone of the movie? (If so, I ain't seeing it.) I guess the poster is a little more successful at capturing the movie's premise.
By comparison, Bass's posters for Vertigo and Anatomy of a Murder (to take two examples) fully capture the tone of the movie, and also help sell it with a creative design representation of the movie's premise.
Pretty underwhelming stuff.
-
That's a wonderfully eerie movie poster! Grabbed my attention and then some. Nice work, Mondo.

by whatevillurks

deserving of being referred to as a mimicry of the work of Saul Bass.
And the biggest problem is not with the execution or formal aspects of the image. It's the irresponsible and unthinking use of imagery that not only fails to convey any concept of the movie's premise, but actually says something else entirely.
Lifeless silohuetted figures hanging from the sky by cords extending from the backs of their necks. All of these figures also seem purposefully differentiated from the mounted, hat wearing, torch-bearing mob.
What does all that add up to?
-
show this to random people and ask them what the movie is about.
-
and tough tits if you didn't get in on the sixty second window to buy one of their pieces of tat.
-
The bottom half of the poster is pretty rad, the top half is just a cut and paste of the Skyline posters (even the color).

And your movie still looks retard. But it's good to know that Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde got a fat paycheck. I like to see proper good actors getting a easy paycheck out of foolish movies made by hackboys like you. It makes you fools look even more foolish then what you already are. Which is a lot.

I save thousands of cool images on my drive at no cost, have no desire to paper my walls with all kinds of stuff like Harry though. If you happen to have one of those LCD picture frames (which will accept an SD card full of images) you can display cool stuff that way. It'll even cycle through a collection in slideshow style. That's if anyone ever comes to your room of course, lol. Generally if I find something cool I'll post it to my fb and share it that way. Point being, no need to bitch about the cost of the poster.

The other day I tried to remember Harrison Ford's movies from the late 90s-2000s
by successor
And I could only remember three: K19, Hollywood Homicide and Six Days, Seven Nights. That's how forgettable his films of that era were. I had to go to imdb.com just to recall any more of them. Random Hearts, What Lies Beneath, Firewall, Extraordinary Measures, Indiana Jones 4. My God, it reads like a greatest flops ever list. What happened to him?! Seriously. He used to be one of my favorite actors. Remember the 80's Ford. ESB and ROTJ, Blade Runner, Witness, Mosquito Coast, the early Indy films. Then after The Fugitive everything turned to shit. In the 2000's he also turned down Narc, Traffic and Syriana. It's almost like karmic retribution for having such a great career.
I only hope Ford returns to form in Cowboys and Aliens. Otherwise, I don't think I'll bother with any more of his films. And considering how well Captain America is doing, I think C&A might get lost in the shuffle even if it is good. -
And since we saw it with a mostly real crowd, it was more interesting than an industry premere.
-
That movie's actually pretty fuckin' good.

Hollywood can always find "yes men" who will shelve their dreams of doing quality work and simply become typists -- These movies by committee are never good, no matter how clever the concept, not that this one is all that clever.
-
Cowboys & Aliens is a nearly exact description of the conflict at the heart of Jon Favreau's latest film. A better one is Cliché & Exposition.
Todd Gilchrist
Boxoffice Magazine
-
While the movie may be novel conceptually, essentially it tells a familiar story, which is far more effective as a Western than as a sci-fi, despite the state-of the art special and sound effects, which dominate the last reel of this overlong, repetitive picture.
Adding to the densely incoherent, not always satisfying narrative...inevitably suffers from rough and awkward transitions from one subplot (and genre) to another.
The least successful character (and performance) is Ella, played by Olivia Wilde -
HBO 15 minute thingy on C&A a few hours ago.
Im more intrigued now than before. It looks like what I would expect from these guys. A clever, fun and action packed movie.
I dig the Alien rope gag to. Nice visual that fits in with the setting.
I'll check it out for sure. -
That poster would be perfect for an animated version of this.
-
If you think that poster is NOT an example of wonderfully executed design, you know absolutely nothing about design. I don't begrudge someone disliking it, but you can't say it isn't "good." From concept to execution, it's fucking flawless.
-
Harry, the best image for the film thus far is EASILY the Struzan poster. Come on.
-
He will watch this movie. He watches every Hollywood movie, pays to see all these movies that are real shit and faggotry omg SHIT TREK AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH HERES ANOTHER 10 DOLLARS SHIT TREK 2 AAAAAHHHHHHH FAGGOTY SHIT FUCK CUNTS
He's paid to see every single Michael Bay movie. Every single fucking one. -

is there anything you guys actually like!!??? -
...they like Hercules, Xena, Transformers, The Island, MI3, Star Trek.
Me, i'd rather go suck a bag of dicks than watch anything Orci and Cuntsman touch -
I can't remember if I actually SAW a trailer that featured the aliens abducting cowboys by roping them and pulling them up (with an obvious resemblance to the punishment of hangings) or if I DREAMED that. I almost think I saw this poster, wondered about that, and then dreamed up the answer.

by asimovlives
I didn't watched TRASHFUCKEMERS 3, and i intend to keep it that way. how easy it is for me to not see Orci's RETARDS VS IDIOTS? Very fucking easy. Far more easier then it is for you to like a good movie.
-
I'm really surprised that no one has attempted something like this before that I'm aware of. I've stated for most of my life how cool if would be to have an alien invasion type movie take place in the old west.
-
I'll watch this likely hunk of shit and review it in your place.
Slashfilm just skewered it. -
Favreau's cool efficiency lends the whole project less personality than its high concept needs. But ultimately to blame for Cowboys & Aliens' overall ineffectiveness is Orci and Kurtzman's script. The duo is skilled at creating emotional punchlines and then undermining them with storytelling choices that ignore logic or narrative continuity.
-
...they're WANKERS!
-
Otherwise, a solid film. Unfortunately, writing is pretty fucking important!
Orci strikes again! -
Not seeing what is so great about this guys work. Does he have talent? Yes? Is he the new movie poster god? Far from it.
Drew Struzan....That that guy could make a movie poster. -
Let's see how long we can last watching it.
